Our order took 45 minutes to arrive, whilst the pub was busy it wasn’t full. Chose the shepherds pie, no cheese on mine, plenty on my friends. It was nice but the accompanying greens and roasted veg were quite frankly pathetic, 2 small pieces of carrot, smaller than my little finger and a tablespoon of greens, really! No one came round to ask if our meal was ok and we were too hungry to complain. I’ve been previously and left very satisfied but this time I left still a little hungry. I would return but avoid the shepherds pie if I’m hungry!

my daughter had her bday drinks here back in sept,however not a bad nite to be honest,she loves busted so i got her a cardbourd cut out of the singer,at the end of the night i asked the manager to look after it for me,to which he said he would do.i went back to get it and was told it had been destroyed by people behind the bar,annoyed is an understatement.i wouldnt of minded but it cost me 50 pound and i have not heard nothing back,to people out there dont leave anything behind the bar for the manager to look after because it will get ruined.

Busy Ember inns pub. Had the seasonal menu, and was generally underwhelmed.

Not a place I will return to. Cold food, menu items unavailable, poor service, piped music too loud. The only thing worth while was the amazing Christmas tree but I would prefer a decent meal and good service. Complained to M&B and they said 'sorry'!

Food was absolutely fantastic. Servers were cheerful and polite but there was a wait due to some missing ingredients, everything was sorted really well. Christmas atmosphere was lovely!

Went late on Sunday evening. Poor choice of Sunday Roasts. Awful portion of meat and very dry. No carrots. Not even an explanation of why there are no carrots. 😞 The quiz was on, and a weekly event. Made up for poor quality of food.

I totally do not agree with staff putting a reservation notice on my table for someone who had phoned in to reserve a table for later. My table was empty when I first sat down with no reservation notice on it. It is the equivalent of telling me I have to leave or move when these other people arrive. I did therefore leave earlier than I intended to, and did not order the food that i was considering ordering before going home. There are reservation notices on most of the tables for varying times of the day in this pub, as it is a popular pub. But a person should never expect be given notice that they may be expected to move or leave for the sake of others who reserve tables. For this reason alone I doubt that I'll be visiting again anytime soon. The pub is nice though, and staff were friendly.

Nice pub welcoming and friendly staff quick service nice food only downside is I don’t think the last refurbishment was thought out very well if you have a table at the top end of the pub when people open the door to come in leave smoke you get a really bad draught that does spoil the meal also the fireplace has been moved so people can’t sit by because it’s situated in the walkway to the bar

I was greeted by the lovely Emma who could not do enough for me and my family, she went above and beyond so thank you Emma we will be back to see you again and the food was amazing

Called in here after visit to newly opened cinema. Went with my wife and her Mother, sadly recently widowed. Was greeted by Emma. We asked for a table with good lighting due to my mother in law havung an eyesight problem to which we were directed. I returned to order our 3 meals which were delivered quickly and exactly as requested. Food was enjoyed by all of us, one burger, one gammon and one veggie option. On return to the bar for further drinks, Emma was serving someone else but asked if we'd enjoyed our meals anyway. When we left a while later. Emma was in the customer area chatting to another customer who had two Golden Retrieves with her (the pub is Very dog friendly). I thanked her again and she said glad you enjoyed it, hopefully we'll see you again. I think you certainly will. Lovely staff, good food and a warm, welcoming atmosphere. Thanks to Emma and the other staff members, we had a lovely evening all round and managed to help my mother in law forget about her problems for a few precious hours.

Fantastic. First time visitor with my dog. Food was lovely and reasonably priced. The atmosphere was great and the staff were friendly and pleasant. Really enjoyed my evening with friends and would return if I was in the area.

We booked my mom’s 80th Birthday meal here and we couldn’t have been more pleased. The staff went above and beyond and their kindness and hospitality was second to none. The food was great and all in all we had a fantastic time. Thank you all for making it special

Good food at a reasonable price and lovely, friendly staff in a relaxing and calm atmosphere. They were more than happy and accommodating at making a substitution with sides in a meal due to my dietary needs. Highly recommend.

Customer service is key in ANY business, right?The hospitality industry is suffering as it is, on its knees in fact & this place is not doing that industry any favours! My advice? You’ve got to do much better, you charge premium price for basic beer, you can at least tempt our hard earn cash with some sort of customer service right? It is NOT your staff, it is your lack of investment in people! I’m available for consultancy & staff training. Just so you’re aware, on this particular visit I was the only person at the bar and this has happened on numerous occasions. Furthermore, there are a number of issues affecting customer experience which fall far below the standard expected from Ember Inns. Pudding was tasty, Yorkshire puddings were massive. Gave us extra gravy.

Came here the other day with some mates and all I can say is the service was amazing, food was great as well, didn't feel like we had to wait too long. The lady serving us was Megan, she was great all evening and was really helpful as well as funny and lovely to talk to. Good little spot to chill and have some drinks.

Came in on Wednesday, got served by Abbie and Megan. Lovely girls and amazing customer service. Helped with any enquiries and concerns I had. I recommend the horse and jockey, quiz night was very enjoyable too

Came for Sunday lunch and it was amazing. Good portions, the rib of beef was incredible. Just need an afternoon nap now! Would definitely recommend it, and we'll be back for more (once I find room in my belly)

Came to the horse and jockey for my grandads 90th birthday and we had a wonderful time. Food and service was amazing across the board and alison was top class and a proper laugh. Would recommend and come back again.

Visiting from Ireland, it was Lovely atmosphere with fire lighting. Friendly kind staff.

Booked our Sons 1st Birthday Party on Sunday 6th October. Team and service were flawless, we ordered a buffet for 20 people and the food was amazing, everyone was complimentary of the taste and menu items. We had a great day and will do it again.

Good meal but a little disappointed, I thought that the wellington would come with roast potatoes but received boiled, checked the menu and this was correct, it’s not that hard to put in olive oil to make these vegan instead of what I assume goose fat. The food came out after 35 minutes and my partners chicken was luke warm. Otherwise, great food and lovely staff.

Very poor service Very poor food Staff and manager are rude Don't use this pub. Go to the Mare Pool or Bishop Vesey. They are cheaper and better. I was called a Welsh Git Very rude head office as well. Not interested in my complaints. The rude female just put the phone down. Wear a body cam if you go to this pub on your own. The manager should be sacked. Don't trust anybody in this business. I have had a collision which was clearly not my fault which has been concluded by the court because of dash cam evidence. 4 clients of this pub have said my dash cam has lied I have now had a phone call saying I owe this business £19.80. This is not a business. They are trying to wrip people off. I owe them £0.00. Just had another phone call about the £19.80. If they think I owe this money they should take me to court. I have had a call saying my son has been throwing beer over clients. Problem. I have not got a son. Only daughters.

Having lived in the area for 20+ years the horse and jockey been a regular and we visited probably weekly. It is now literally at the end of our road. 3 weeks ago we went and ordered a childrens sunday roast we had ordered many times before. It came out with no root vegetables and a yorkshire pudding cut in half. We complained and were told this is the "spec". I pointed out to the waitress the menu clearly stated it came with yorkshire pudding and root vegetables. At this point we were then served with a yorkshire pudding and root vegetables but were told in no uncertain terms if we came again the childrens roast would only come with half a yorkshire pudding. I therefore asked to speak to the manager. He confirmed this was the case, I have no idea who thinks it is acceptable to serve a yorkshire pudding cut in half when the menu clearly states the meal comes with a yorkshire pudding but he insisted. At this point we left and went home. I tired to send a complaint to Ember Inns, however this was just directed to the same manager so got an abrupt response saying he had explained this was the "spec". At this stage I just decided to ignore it and never go to the horse and jockey again while the current manager is still there. That was till today when I walked past on an early morning walk at about 8am. There was a broken peroni glass on the pavement with large shards of glass dangerously pointing up. I continued my walk and returned home a different way. We then went out with the children and were again passing the horse and jockey at about 2:30pm the glass was still left dangerously lying in the middle of the pavement. I therefore went in and informed the manager but he had no clue it was there, where he should be clearly checking the outside areas. I will not be going back while the current manager is working there and believe he is not performing his duties properly hence having to write this review as there is no way to contact Ember Inns to lodge a formal complaint. Wow, no way for me to post a response other than editing my post. Dealing with the arrogance of the manager is astounding. If he thinks going in and having to tell him there has been a broken glass on the pavement for about 6+ hours is aggressive, there is a difference between annoyance and aggression, he needs to consider if someone had fallen on it and cut their hand or stepped on it and seriously there foot, I went in told them and left, I had to say excuse me as him and the bar man seem too busy talking to notice a customer walked up to the bar. I pointed out he might not care about his customers opinion but he needed to care about the area around his pub. If he thinks broken glasses from the pub isn't his responsibility, really??? It was right outside the main entrance. All I would like is to be able to contact someone at ember inns someone who isn't the manager. Is there a proper complaints procedure.

The H&J team were great accommodating a table for 27 for a work lunch at short notice. The food and service were both amazing and would highly recommend / visit again! Thankyou

Not been for about 6 months and was very disappointed… menus dirty & sticky only 2 members of staff and they were working very hard trying to do the bar and food but pub very busy not their fault. Food has really gone down plates full of grease after eating & you could count the chips on the plate .. would take a lot to get me back there for food … whoever in charge needs to raise standard’s !!!!

Evening dinner for 4 people. Booked in advance and the table was not ready, reserved but not cleaned. Mixed grill was good and plenty on the plate. Ordered Sausage and mash as a main meal and a side order of steamed vegetables, 3 sausages limited potatoe? How much does mashed potatoe cost? hardly any onions, although described as onion rings. Very small plate of food. Burger and chips the burger was very tasty however 1 small piece of lettuce and 1 slice of tomatoe no side dressing or dressing on the burger..... i have seen better burgers in Mcdonalds. Very busy with a large party going on. Clearly understaffed as the table was not cleared before the puddings arrived. Need to sort out your staffing levels and online bookings system if you have not got the staff available to provide the service for both then stop online bookings. Head office you need to look at customer service before profits. Will think twice before we return, shame as 12 months ago we had a fantastic meal here.

Great Sunday roast, exactly as you’d want at home! Portions were great, meat was tender and yorkshires were fresh. A nice surprise - did not disappoint.

My partner and our friends visited the Horse and Jockey last night for the Wednesday pub quiz, and it was an evening we thoroughly enjoyed. The quiz hosts were incredibly funny, making the night truly memorable—so much so that one of our friends from Cambridgeshire said he'd gladly drive up just to participate again. The drink service was prompt, and the cocktails were well-crafted; I especially enjoyed the Aperol spritz, which was expertly made. The food exceeded my expectations, despite not usually being a fan of pub fare. My partner and I shared chicken wings without sauce due to a food intolerance, and the staff were very accommodating. The wings were some of the best I’ve had—perfectly crispy and seasoned with just the right amount of black pepper. For my main course, I had the Hunter's chicken schnitzel, which was equally delicious. I would happily return for both the food and the drinks, and I plan to recommend this place to all my friends.

Quiz night on Wednesdays is something I and many others really look forward to each week. However, tonight the usual quizmaster was not there, and was replaced by a double act that left a LOT to be desired: they were overly loud, used foul and inappropriate language, kept taking cigarette breaks, and were more concerned with how funny they thought they were (they weren't) than providing customers with what is usually a well-run and enjoyable evening. The Horse and Jockey will be losing my custom if these 2 persist in ruining Wednesday nights.

Mid week visit - easy to park - friendly staff - good price for two course - portion size for mains were very good - plenty of time for a cup of tea later
