Been to the joint stock many times for a drink but never eaten. Yesterday, a day shopping my friend and I decided to have some lunch so we ordered on a light lunch. I ordered cheese/onion toastie with chunky chips. Food arrived quickly. Presentation very basic looking, I took one bite of the toastie it was disgusting. No cheese it was basically a onion toastie. How can a chef produce something so simple like this that was disgusting . I complained and had a full refund of 11.95. Would definitely not eat here again

My Wife had the pie & mash and I had the fish & chips. Both were freshly cooked, piping hot and delicious. The theatre is truly atmospheric and the performance very good. After the show we had a final drink in the main bar which had a great ambience with a good mix of music which could be heard but wasn't intrusive. We will definitely be returning.

The interior has been refurbished since we been here last time and is looking good, although I preferred the old leather armchairs and mix and match chairs and tables. There's a good choice of drinks, not too expensive. We have not eaten here in a long time, therefore cannot comment. One of the many impressive and stunning pubs in Birmingham - traditional and cosy. They got a theatre venue too, with some good acts, reasonably priced.

Ordered the leg of lamb steak with new potatoes… The meal came floating in some kind of white watery liquid, a tablespoon of peas maybe, a sprig of something green, 2 tiny new potatoes cut in halves and a lamb steak which could easily have helped me out if my shoes needed re-soling, it was as tough as old boots… £25 !!! Why didn’t I complain you may wonder? Well nobody came to ask if everything was okay, the place was heaving, I was starving then ( and when we left 😂 ) and we were on a time schedule to be somewhere else so no time to eat something different… Bad choice for me but maybe if it was a bit more substantial and cooked so the meat was edible it would have sufficed…

We visited here for dinner in the pub before seeing a show in the theatre. It was a busy Saturday night and the place was packed. It was loud but with a good atmosphere and the service was very efficient and friendly. There is a great selection on the food menu. They also catered brilliantly for my sister's complex dietary restrictions (no gluten, dairy, oils, garlic, onion or seasonings - everything plain). She contacted them in advance and received a very positive response saying they would be able to cater for her. They followed all of her requests and she received a meal that she was able to eat in full. There was no fuss, it was well presented and everything was kept plain as requested. I enjoyed the chicken pie with triple cooked chips, which was very tasty. We didn't have time for dessert but if I come again I definitely want to try the scones with clotted cream. We also enjoyed the show upstairs. Such a quirky, fun venue with kind, attentive staff. Thank you!

If you want to see a bitter woman yell at young staff for minor inconvenience then this is the place for you. Apart from the fiasco, food was okay for price. Building is beautiful and rich with history as the nicer staff told me it used to be a library and then a bank before it became a pub.

Nice pub, but unsure if it’s under new management as several changes to my last visit (2 years ago) One thing we used to like on the menu was the Ale and Pie Board, 3 ales and 3 pies. Very unique offer. Now the menu is bland, you can find the same food at a Wetherspoons for half the price. Drinks weren’t any better. Cocktails are one of those tap ones, not done by a proper mixologist. £11 for this. You’re better going to the alchemist round the corner, you’ll get a proper mixologist and many of their cocktails are under £11… disgusting that old joint stock think they can charge that much. Other drinks aren’t better, we had a pint of Guinness and 225ml of pineapple juice. The cost for this was £10. A tenner for one pint and some pineapple juice. Even in London that would be steep. If you’re after food and drink, you’re better going to a different bar just five mins from here, otherwise the atmosphere and the theatre are the only stand out things at this pub.

The building and location is fantastic - a genuinely lovely place to have a drink. It’s not quite the gastro-pub that it could be unfortunately, with the food certainly not matching the price (around £18 for pie and mash). One of our party’s meal had dropped off the order list unfortunately so didn’t eat with the rest of us, though was compensated with a drink on the house. Mainly pies on offer, with some nice sounding bar snacks and a handful of other options. Pie was pretty good but the veg/mash was on the small side.

Fantastic interior architecture! Upon arriving it has a wow factor with its impressive style like you’ve just walked down the staircase of the Titanic. Maybe their grand interior is used to promote a feeling of class and how they justify their prices. I paid £20 for a pint of beer and a glass of wine which made me almost drop them in shock! this is extortionate! This place can never complain about rising costs when they are clearly robbing the public with those prices and making a hefty profit. I also had the roast dinner which was £25! Although it was very nice the price did not justify the quality and portion size. Probably the most expensive roast dinner in the area. This pub on a whole is expensive! I would not return here for anything other than a quick drink on pay day. The atmosphere is the only part I couldn’t fault. Definitely worth a visit but just make sure your wallet is loaded beforehand...

Signage could do with improvement. Ie Following sign to toilet to find the sign to the theatre, when going up the stairs to the left as we were advised the lift was out of order. No signage (or if there was it was not obvious) showing stairs near the lift. If you don't like front rows at comedy shows, there is no way to avoid it. The "theatre" is only 3 rows deep!! Popped in today for a drink on way home Come here on a regular basis, can't fault service, food etc. What really gets me is that the obscene language by the builders who come in for a well earned pint usually close to the bar. We had to sit at the back so didn't hear the effing and blinding. PLEASE can you put a sign up about lthe language it's not as if it's done quietly especially when children are in. Are you that desperate for trade, I was in the building trade and I can swear with the best of them Are you scared to tell them 🤔
