Sadly, this was a very poor experience. I could hardly get at the counter to place our order, the bar staff ignored me as long as possible and were then quite surly. The food was really horrible - poorly cooked served with greasy, soggy chips. The music in the lounge was much too loud - we asked for it to be turned down (the other people having a meal in this area were in agreement) but it was only adjusted slightly and we couldn't really have a proper conversation. When we came to pay, staff were busy chatting to each other and could have been a lot more courteous. Avoid.

Went in for an evening meal. I’m not sure what I’ve just eaten but it certainly wasn't a vegetable lasagne and garlic bread. There was no pasta, very little cheese and an over powering flavour of mixed herbs. The garlic ciabatta was a hastily created garlic toasted roll. The young girl serving our food looked terrified and having eaten it I now understand why. Wish I had complained at the time. Seriously avoid this place.

Absolutely rubbish. We had vegetable lasagne that had clearly been thrown together when they had run out - they shouldn't have served it. The waitress was clearly embarrassed to serve it. Garlic bread was a burger bun. I feel completely ripped off. Don't bother coming here for food. The wine was nice.

Ordinary service, food was pretty grim - a coffee and a soup were inedible. The soup may have been barley & vegetables (staff didn't know) - it was overpowered with thyme and had skin and lumps, presumably it wasn't stirred when being microwaved. Both meals described as including "toasted ciabatta" - one was overdone in the microwave to the point where it was very hard in places, the other was just floppy. Coffee was so strong it wasn't drinkable, and wasn't drunk. Apparently my partner's salad garnish was "ok". Staff attitude was rude with barely contained hostility when food quality/bill queried. Despite the fact that the soup and coffee weren't consumed, a reduction in the bill to reflect this was refused repeatedly, despite very polite requests. Extremely disappointed, left feeling hungry but wouldn't risk returning.

Ummmmm disappointing. Female bar server unfriendly and does not top up your drinks and thus very surly if you ask for this to be done . Has she not seen the recent survey about people being shortchanged ??? If this continues we won’t be coming back. Staff training in customer service required particularly bearing in the mind the summer is coming 🙀. Maybe hospitality is not the ideal job.

Well we ordered whitebait & prawn cocktail starters gammon which came with chips & salad & steak & ale pie with chips & peas plus ordered a portion onion rings. Staff then informed us no whitebait shouldn’t have been on the menu bearing in mind it’s a proper printed menu. So ordered salt & pepper chicken. Cocktail full of prawns but bread that came with it was 2 small seeded bread crusts part dry & soggy. The salt & pepper chicken good portion for a starter. The gammon was large & tasty but pie had two bits of pastry on the top not sure what pastry it was. Meat & gravy very salty chips brill. Onion rings never turned up so told them to take off the bill. Would we eat there again no but would pop in for a pint.

Good pub, we arrived too late to try the food but the beer was good. Old world pub with good atmosphere. I appreciate it’s a local but not sure why they insist on sitting around the bar so it’s hard for anyone else to get served / see the pumps. Enjoyed a few beers and tried other pubs in the village

We called for Sunday lunch and received two lovely plates full of piping hot, tasty food. We had the beef option, it was lean and plentiful. The veg was roasted carrots, cauliflower cheese and petite pois. The mash was amazing, smooth, creamy and a hint of mustard. Toped off with roast potatoes, a stuffing ball and a beautifully made Yorkshire pudding. The gravy was really good too, maybe could have done with a little bit more but that's personal taste, I do like my food swimming!! The atmosphere is really good too, we ate in the main bar next to a log fueled range. Staff and other customers were very friendly and welcoming and the beer is excellent.

I had Steak & Ale pie and chips which was absolutely amazing. Sadly my wife's tuna and mayo wasn't. Far too much mayo, very little tuna. That aside, the main reason I scored it as average was because on the coldest day of the year, there wasn't any heating and it was bitterly cold in there. To be fair, they lit the fire just as we were leaving. If we are in the area again, I would still go back though.

Have been here few years ago. It was easy to get a table. I asked about gluten free food. The separate fryer was broken. The barman was very helpful and arranged for me to have my meal with vegetables and new potatoes. The meal was lovely, very tasty. My other half had Steak and Ale pie. The pie was a good size and full of meat. We also had dessert. We would eat here again.

A mixed experience in the horse and jockey but overall my experience was below expectation and value. We stayed overnight, £90 a night. The room was tired with black mould on the outside of windows, covering the window pane. Paint peeling off the walls and a general sense of uncleanliness about the room. The pub beers were fine and the female bar tenders were pleasant and engaging on the first evening. The second evening there was a younger guy running the bar who really didn’t seem customer focused at all. He told me one minute the kitchen was closed when we tried to order desert following our main meal and then told me it was a 40 minute wait. He was backwards and forwards to the kitchen trying to see if the chef would take an order for food. Very strange and he seemed thoroughly annoyed all night with everyone. My meal was sent back 3/4 not eaten. The chips were not cooked and the pulled pork topped burger had sat under the hot plate for so long it was totally burnt out and not edible. Breakfasts were nice though and again a different attentive waitress was great

Tired “traditional” pub in the Peaks. Come with a low expectation like the other reviewers and you won’t be disappointed. If you like oily fried food and diarrhoea then this is the place for you. Chicken burger that you can’t bite through, chips so oily that I can only imagine the fryer was on half temperature and clearly the oils had not been changed for some time given the flakes of burnt crud that covered my chips. Upside was the very nice waiting staff and barman, let down by the can’t be bothered kitchen staff.

What a brilliant pub. The food, staff and ambiance are fabulous. Old school pub, with old school ambiance. The staff are friendly, polite, helpful and professional. The pub is clean, well stocked with beer and wines and when asked to turn music down , every single time, they were polite and respectful. The food is absolutely delicious and such large portions that I have not managed to finish a meal yet. The cost is very reasonable and the service is prompt and efficient. I overheard a member of staff saying to a customer that swearing is not acceptable… one strike and you are out… that made me so happy because many pubs we have visited ignore bad language. It’s a joy to find an unpretentious yet brilliant pub.

Spent a week in Tideswell and with this being, by far, our closest pub, my wife & I visited every day for an hour or so. We never ate here so can only review on what we did and experienced. They had 3, perhaps, 4 ales on offer and, personally speaking, I can really recommend the Brother Rabbit ale. I’m not a big fan of most of the pale-coloured ales around; I find a lot of them too hoppy-bitter and I’m more of a ruby or dark ale person. But this one had a lovely, rounded & smooth taste. I think they had 3 lagers ‘on tap’; they certainly had Carling and Estrella, which was my lager of choice whilst there and was very nice. They had a fruit cider ‘on tap’ too. They had 3 rooms and two of them were more set up for dining. I’d say it best to check out with the pub when they will be doing food – they do have a chalk board outside but I got the distinct feeling that they make decisions week-by-week as to which nights to serve food as, part way through the week they added two nights but were talking about it-being a little ‘hit & miss’ whether customers turned up and, therefore, whether it was worth them-prepping the kitchen. They do have special feature nights though that seem regular, such as a pie night (Thursday I think).Staff were lovely – I chatted for some time with 3 of them during most of our visits. It was nice of them to make us feel so welcome and I wish them well. They had a couple of well-secured gazebos covering 4 benches just outside the pub whilst we were there, which was very much needed & appreciated during a largely drizzly week. They also have several benches just across the road on a grassed area. It’s got a ‘locals’ feel about the place but one that definitely makes visitors feel welcome.

This could be such a good place to eat. First time we ate here was better, hence we went back and sorry we bothered. The first time we were accommodated quickly and didn’t wait too long for food which was delicious. However the staff ( 2 men ) were run off their feet, with stock running out, even glasses. They remained pleasant and communicated the situation at all times. We went back 2 nights later, thinking it had been a bad day. This time we waited 2 hours for food, not once were apologised to by staff, only when I asked when would we get food were we told it would be soon… This visit it was completely different staff and we were told eventually it was a new chef. The food was not acceptable, such a shame. If this is how the Horse and Jockey is going to continue I wouldn’t recommend eating there.

Mash potato was inedible and the “triple cooked” chips weren’t (soggy and tasteless). When asked “how our meal was” I stated “disappointing “. We should have been rung and asked if we still wanted a meal with the main chef off.It would seem that a lot of the pubs in this area think it is acceptable to give poor food and service at high price’s whereas a small few give great service at reasonable prices.A shame but we won’t be back.

We were on holiday for a week so were trying out the local pubs. The website says ‘under new management’ but I’m beginning to think that’s been there for ages as many other reviews refer to it. Website also didn’t have the menu available which is obvious when you finally see it as there is nothing here to set it above it’s many competitors, and would not have drawn me in. My partner had steak and ale pie which was tasty but cold in the middle, cold veg and lukewarm chips. I had scampi with lukewarm chips. With such a basic menu, getting the fundamentals right is important. The welcome and customer service was as lukewarm as the food. We’d really wanted to support a ‘new’ business, but on this occasion it was disappointing.

Felt exactly like going into a bar in 2019Food for 4 arrived rather spread out over a number if minutes. It was as if half the table had been forgotten.Food quality generally below average. Wasn’t expecting anything fancy but all dishes where somewhat underwhelming which is a real shame given the beautiful location. The pub would be super convenient for our week long stay here but won’t be returning.

We stay every year in Tideswell and the Jockey is always on our list of places to eat & drink and I have previously left good reviews. However in the post covid era things in this pub are not as they should be. No track and trace info was taken. People are congregating around the bar and so on. The worst part is the excessive rowdiness going on outside. The pub take no interest in asking their outside guests to drink up and move on when it's closing time and the partying (including fights, arguments and so on) continues into the smaĺl hours. This is in a residential area. Poor show on all counts. We declined to eat there.

Marie and the staff were very welcoming, loved the room with the fire it was nice and cosy. It would be nice if there was music in the lounge area or a TV and a nice fire as it got very busy in the room with the fire we are hoping to pop in again in the summer.

We visited here with friends and had food - if you can call it that! This pub is awful! It’s dark and dirty and doesn’t look as if it’s been cleaned since it was built which must be a very long time ago! There are dirty smears on the ladies toilet walls and a really strange smell to the place. The language coming from the staff was disgusting and they all look like they need a good wash and change of clothes! What happened to looking nice and professional for your customers?! Don’t go here. There are other pubs in the village. We will not be going back.

Having previously stayed at this accommodation twice before we booked back in May 2 rooms for a Christmas weekend away with friends. On arrival we were asked to pay for the rooms and was quoted a higher amount than what was quoted in our confirmation email. On querying it we were shown the booking in the diary to which we advised that the name we were being shown wasn't ours. The young man who dealt with us then advised he would need to speak to the Manager and we were asked to take a seat. After 20 minutes of being kept waiting the Manageress finally came over after having an argument with the young man which made us all feel very uncomfortable and long story short advised that they were unable to accommodate us as they were full and as they had only taken over in August and had no records prior to this and that this has happened quite a few times. If that was the case why didn't she come straight over and apologise and explain this to us? We then asked if this has happened a few times can she recommend somewhere for us to stay close by to which the answer was 'get on google'. We were disappointed that no assistance was offered in finding further accommodation or even use of WIFI and a drink while we searched. We where then left with the task of finding somewhere else at 4pm in the afternoon. I feel I can't give a true rating as didn't stay so you may find you have a lovely stay. Unfortunately we will no longer be visiting this pub due to the issues above.

A group of 8 of us ate an evening meal at the Horse and Jockey after attending the firework display in Tideswell on 2nd November 2019. I ordered beef lasagne with chips, salad and garlic bread. The lasagne was dry and rubbery, the chips came with potato skin on the ends and the waitress didn't bring the garlic bread until I asked for it.A couple of years ago I had eaten chips with skins on somewhere else but I would never eat them again as the potato skins gave me indigestion and I had stomach ache all night. I told the waitress that the chef had forgotten to peel the potatoes before cooking the chips. I said that the chips would give me indigestion so I asked them to cook some more chips but peel the potatoes first. They said that's how they come and they couldn't provide any other chips. I said that there is nothing on the menu to say that the chips have skins on. I cut the skin off the ends of each chip and it took me a long time to eat them. If I hadn't been with a group of friends I would have rejected the whole meal and asked for a full refund. They need to buy a potato peeler and train the chef how to use it.They did have a live band that we weren't expecting so I am giving them 2* instead of 1*.

Under new management from Summer 2019 and so much better. Marie and her team are doing a great job, very friendly and determined to offer locals and visitors a warm welcome with good food and fine beers. There was a good selection of gin too! Food was home cooked; loved the trio of sausages braised in mustard and onion gravy and the steak burger was excellent too. Do go to support her and we wish Marie all the best for a very successful future.

We arrived at 7.10pm and ordered food immediately. Unfortunately our order of four meals arrived in two parts; three meals at 8.10pm and the fourth at 8.30pm. Although we hadn’t finished our meal, unlike the couple next to us, who had their meals served an hour apart. We ordered gammon, beef burger, vegetable lasagne and lamb shank. All meals were poor, with salad and vegetables being minimal. The lamb shank special was tough and actually inedible. The manager cleared our table and asked if everything was ok, which did surprise us, as she was aware of our wait. We complained about the waiting times, as well as, the lamb shank. The manager declared she was sorry to hear that we were unhappy with our wait and the food and deducted the cost of the lamb from the total bill. We will not return to this pub. Especially when there are others nearby, with delicious food and pleasant staff.

I recently visited this pub with friends on a walking trip. We arrived in the afternoon to discover that the new owners were unable to provide an evening meal as the bar was being refurbished. Thankfully, another pub in the village satisfied our hunger. My bed was very comfortable and the shower worked well. There was plenty of food for breakfast.

Loved this place ... it was supposed to be for a quick coffee but it has many marvellous ideas especially at this time of year regarding decorations, gifts for all the family, plants and homeware. Do visit if you have the chance ... ps great coffee and cakes too !

Had a lovely hot roast pork sandwich, it was obviously all homemade and the stuffing was one of the best I’ve tasted , been a few times on my visits to bakewell with my wife and couldn’t recommend it more highly

Disappointing food. Fish and chips looked OK but the batter was undercooked and three of us ate the fish and left the batter. They offered a replacement which we refused and accepted a discount and free coffee. A nice place, not busy on Monday, market day. I am not surprised if this quality of food is regularly served.
