Horse and jockey in Mendip

Recommended by a friend and Colleague to go here for a Sunday Roast. We have been a couple of times in the summer and I must say this place is an all rounder. Fantastic Sunday Roasts with an array of seperate options if you have children or fussy family members. The two hosts were welcoming and made us feel comfortable the minute we entered with a contagious smile and banter. We were served by a young waitress who was polite and patient whilst she took our order. We all tried different variations of the roast options that were available and the food was cooked to perfection. Hats off to Saff & the Kitchen Team 👏 Only one preference would be the ability to have stuffing with my roast but in hindsight the portion was more than satisfying that I probably couldn't have fit it in.

I came for a meal with the family we all had a great meal the rump steak was fabulous and had a lovely flavor we will visit again soon!

I’ve eaten in here 4 times now with friends and family. The roast are great value. Where everywhere else is £16 upwards, a standard roast here is £12!! And they are great. Fresh veg, piping hot and served fast even when busy - and they always are, and for a reason. Full of families, the pub is cosy, warm and inviting. The saloon has its fair share of local interesting characters which makes a trip to the men’s interesting. Staff are great, landlords are lovely. Plenty of parking. What’s not to like? If I had one teenyweeny complaint it would be that they don’t have any gin Bowles just plain tumblers which takes the fun out of being an alcoholic a bit.

The only reason that I didn’t rate it 5 out of 5 was because we were in the restaurant instead of the bar ( our fault ) Won’t make that mistake next time. Atmosphere not as good in the restaurant. The bar had a lovely warm fire going and just looked very inviting. I’m a Coeliac and even though there wasn’t a great deal of choice the food when served was fabulous. I had the Chilli with chips and a side salad and I couldn’t eat it all. The portion size was huge but the taste was just yummy. My friend had the Lasagna, chips and salad which she also couldn’t finish. Not sure on the variety of puddings as we were too full to even think about it. Will definitely be back. Well worth a visit. Has a good size car park attached also.

Not been in this pub for years. My sister booked us on for dinner. She and I had fish n chips which were fantastic. Batter exceptional. Chips well cooked. Well worth the visit.

An excellent burger with all the trimmings. But we both felt a rather unwlecoming atmosphere whereby, what I presume were locals, all stopped talking to listen and watch us - the whole time we were there. Sorry - we won't be back!

Excellent lunch. Popped in with a friend and my dog and had a lovely welcome and delicious food. I had the gammon and friend had the lasagne, generous portions and homemade chips cooked to perfection.

A pub that has been on our radar a while to visit. It is a locals pub, but nonetheless very welcoming with a buzz of conversation evident. The menu can be classed as ‘proper pub food’ with a surprisingly wide selection including a specials selection as well. Mixed grill, curry & Yorkshire pud and sausages made up our order and all were superb! The portion sizes were huge as average eaters, none of us could finish ours and therefore we didn’t have room for pudding. We will return!

We booked a table of 12 people for a birthday when we arrived they only had a table of 4 prepared the woman had a attitude and stated that we should have pre ordered and paid a deposit as we were a table bigger then 10 yet no one asked when the booking was made ( there mistake not ours) we then pre ordered the puddings as they were running out yet once the dinner had be cleared away no one came back to the table to ask about desserts so eventually we approached the bar and the man behind the bar said we better hurry up as the kitchen was closing. Purely on the grounds of the bad attitudes of the staff I will not be returning.

Highly recommended, Amazing quaint little pub. The food we ate was perfect and the portions were very filling. Nikki and Mark are the perfect hosts they both went above and beyond to make me and my partner feel very welcome on our way to Glastonbury Festival. We decided we would return before making our journey back up to Yorkshire a week later because everything was amazing the first time round. Nikki and Marks generosity and kindness meaned a lot. We hope to see you next year!

Normally the food here is lovely but not this time my husband had rump steak it was tough and he had the worst upset stomach during the night, we brought a bit of steak home for our dog and she was up all night really poorly had constant diahorea throughout the night like my husband. The chips are usually lovely but not this time they were hard and tasted strange. However my dessert biscoff sundae was delicious.

Absolutely excellent meal with incredible service. We were attending a friends wedding reception nearby and needed somewhere to eat with our 2 year old and friends nearby before the reception. Due to the timings of the reception, we really struggled to find a pub to accommodate us. Nikki the landlady went above and beyond when I contacted her to ask if we could book a table. She was kind enough to keep the kitchen open for us from their lunch hours and made us feel so welcome. The food was delicious and we cannot thank all the staff enough for going above and beyond for us. In particular, one of the bar staff who my toddler took an immediate liking too. Being very nosey, he wanted to see behind the bar and she was wonderful letting him help her put some bottles in the bottle bin and making him feel useful. Would absolutely recommend this place to others and will definitely be sure to visit in the future if we are back in the area 😊

We went for a friend’s birthday The food was excellent The atmosphere was great And the place was full of young farmers having a few drinks before going to their annual ball . The only minor downside is the bar is a little small

Table booked for 4 at 12md. Very busy. Smart premises. Good parking. Friendly staff. Prompt service. Great food at very fair price. Noticed other customer plates were cleared. Could find no faults at all. Well done all. Will be back.

My husband and I arrived to join 26 others for our Christmas meal on a Wednesday evening 14th December. We ordered drinks at the bar which was nicely decorated for Christmas and told our group was in the restaurant - what a disappointment no thought had gone into decorating the room or Christmas music playing We had already pre-ordered our meals with a £10 deposit per head However, 2 had to miss the meal as was unwell and the pub were informed. However, the landlord was quite rude and said that we still had to pay for those 2 who had not shown as the food had been prepared - as this was the case we said ok and to bring the 2 x 3 course meals out and would be shared - unfortunately this never materialised but still payment was expected - pretty poor show as they were lucky to have had a full restaurant midweek My husband and I had mirrored our choices - starters prawns, turkey for main and cheese board for dessert. All ok apart from finding a hair wrapped around the pig in blanked which put me off the rest of my meal Good selection of cheeses for desert. When we were leaving we went to the bar to pay the remainder of the monies taking off the deposit only to be told an extra £2 per person was added for the cheese board - something we were not aware of Having spoken to many at the meal - quite a few were disappointed not only with the service but also their meals Would we come here again - probably not as food was pretty average and we didn't find the landlord very welcoming. I believe this was the overall feeling of the 26 party shame as they could have got a lot of recommendations

Arrived early asked for coffee the man behind the bar said he didn’t have proper coffee only nescafe I said this was fine but I did not receive any drink from him The rest of the group arrived at 7pm all in all there 26 of us would have been 28 but two were poorly and let Becky now just before she left home Enter the meals Starters were okay Main course was good although gravy came when I had almost finished Becky again told the waitress that two hadn’t turned up Then the man behind the bar came into the room and in front of everyone said in a very loud voice You got a problem Poor Becky she was mortified, she tried explaining that two of the girls ket her down at the last minute He then stood there and argued stating well you’re still going to have to pay for them bearing in mind that everyone paid a ten pound deposit Becky stated that she had to trust her she would get the money and bring it up to him He stood there still complaining In the end he was told that if we have to pay for the meals we will have the meals brought out and we would share them This did not happen with any course I ordered pavlova for my sweet well there was no pavlova only cream and strawberries Although it was edible I had to leave half of it, We were then told to go to The bar tell them what we had and pay then we could go I could recommend the food but the manners of the two (I presume owners) was absolutely disgusting and completely unacceptable. There was twenty six woman who could have been repeat customers by bringing their own families. Because of the rudeness and utter disregard of Becky no one will be going back

The phrase ‘proper pub’ was made for this place. Great food, nice folk (punters and staff) and good selection of beers. What’s not to like ? Glad I expanded my Google search. Locals very lucky to have this pub.

A friendly pub we stopped into to break up a long journey. The staff were friendly and welcoming and the pub has a lovely atmosphere. Lots of tasty options to choose from for our lunch, including gluten free options. We really enjoyed our meal and were glad to have found this place on Tripadvisor beforehand.

We have visited this establishment many times with family 👪 Always a warm welcome and hearty portions. Never fails to deliver. Sadly we left early on this occasion due to a rowdy crowd who took over the pub with their bawdy behaviour and colourful language.

We had a lovely lunch in this pub, the portions were big. I had ham, egg, chips and peas. The ham was top notch, all of us enjoyed our meals. The service was friendly and fast. I would defiantly recommend this pub.

Wow what an amazing Pub. Visited for my Birthday yesterday. The food was delicious & plentiful & the staff were very quick & efficient. The Pub had gone to great lengths to manage social distancing with table Re-arrangement & table service. We were asked not to cue at the bar but obviously this has to be the responsibility of not only the pub trying to enforce it but the people visiting too. Well done The Horse & Jockey management & staff. We will definitely be back, thank you for a fantastic evening.

Tables spaced out perfectly but the queue for drinks and food ordering had no social distancing people were even queued alongside tables. I'm sure normally fine but with the eat out scheme it was really busy. You had to queue each time for drinks, meals, dessert or more drinks plus people drinking outside in the garden coming in to join queue. Would work perfectly if orders taken at the table. We were looking forward to dinner as pub has good menu but left as it was not a safe socially distanced place to be.

Gorgeous food well managed had pre booked which was essential as very busy but appears to manage the distancing rules well in the early service food was sublime!

Have been here loads of time now as is a firm favourite with the friends and family. Can’t say I have ever had a bad meal and the staff are always great. Nice big menu and the specials board is always a treat.

Wanted to write a quick message of thanks to the staff at The Horse and Jockey impeccable polite staff, and really good food so enjoyed the Sunday Roast. They all seemed to embrace the new social distancing rules, and it never felt uncomfortable or trouble to the staff. I can’t recommend The Horse and Jockey enough. 10/10 all round and we will definitely be back. Fantastic you should all be very proud !

Full disclosure: This is my local. Gastro-pub it ain't. Well-kept beer & cider - some lethal cider - and a "pub-grub" menu. Huge portions of simple food, beautifully cooked. Cheerful owners (Nikki & Mark) have quickly built a loyal following in the village and beyond. Last night, it had to close as a coronavirus precaution. At lunchtime the pub's Facebook page announced that they would start doing takeaways of most of the menu - and takeaway booze! Tonight, as newly-incarcerated self-isolators, we tried it. Phoned order in to Mark who took credit card details. 20 minutes later, pitched up at the back door to be passed the food - no contact. Food was just as epic as ever - how do they get take-away chips that are crisp? Full marks in all directions - and our very best wishes and fingers crossed for the team.

Great food , big portions, quick service even on a very busy Saturday evening, everyone was very happy with the service and quality, definitely will be returning and making it our local, and very well priced , great value.

We had a evening just before christmas 2019 at the horse and jockey.The staff and especially Nikki(poss spelt wrong)were very welcoming and friendly...a really warm well kept pub etc.The drinks were good and the food exceptionalI reccomend this place to anyone who wants first class food,drink,comfort,and a lovely landlady..

Hi Just had a Christmas meal at lunch time, first one of the season and the next ones have a lot to live up to, 13 of us had great starters mains and puddings, the staff where friendly and couldn't do enough for us. Thank you Nikki and her team for a lovely Christmas meal.

This pub. Restaurant is supporting illegal fox hunting and as a result atleast 2.. Possible more foxes were killed.. This is not a business I want to be socialised with and so there for will be boycotting this pub from now on. And encouraging others to do the same..

Went for a family meal my daughter found a hair in her starter, when the owner came to clear the the table she was informed her reply was oh must be one of mine but at least I have washed my hair. Totally unacceptable. Apart from that the food was excellent.

Such a pleasure to eat gluten pizza in a country pub. I savoured every bite as it was generously stuffed full with toppings. I would come here again. We had such a lovely evening and the night flew by. A perfect start to our weekend away.

Me and my friend visited as we were staying nearby on a much needed break from city life. Your 'friendly' staff and even 'friendlier' locals made us rather unwelcome. From being moaned at as soon as we walked in by a large group of men to being treated like a nuisense by the bar staff. Glad we decided to leave and order food elsewhere. It put a right downer on our trip. Ive had much warmer welcomes from a rival footie pub!The only saving grace was the Cider.

First time vist at the weekend havin g travelled from Portsmouth, via Wells.lovely country pub and the food ( roasts all round), was first class. All home cooked and generous portions. Prices also very reasonable. Car park gets a bit busy but we left the cars by the play park just up the road. Well worth a vist but book first.

Came to eat here and have Sunday roast with the family following a wedding the day before. Comfortable, cosy place, staff were very friendly and accommodating. Food was really very good, exceeded expectations. Also loved the fact that they catered for the gluten free members in the group and those with bigger and smaller appetites alike. Convivial, enjoyable and relaxed atmosphere, great food, very reasonably priced. Would be pleased to recommend.

The good reviews made me expect more. I had steak and chips; it was ok. The chips were really nice, like chip shop chips. The steak was not great. I went for the sirloin and it was very fatty and over cooked.

Came here on a Saturday afternoon a few weeks ago as a party of 5, we arrived at 2:05pm and were told that food is stopped being served at 2 but they would check with the Kitchen as to whether we could still order.

Have eaten here many times since moving to Binegar. Food is cooked to order and portions are huge. Menu rarely changes but there are daily specials to supplement this. The cheesecake for desserts is always amazing. Friendly feel and pleasant cosy restaurant, able to book via Nicki on Facebook

A warm and welcoming pub of the traditional type. Our lunch party of twenty was served quickly and efficiently by the friendly landlord and his staff - and the helpings were enormous! The pub may be a bit rough and ready, but the beer is great and the food is really good value - I wish I lived in Binegar!

Came to the horse and jockey for a family meal and couldn’t have gone better what a range of meals! I am not a fan of a roast so the variety was amazing! Great food and certainly full up now! And what a friendly atmosphere the pub sang happy birthday to a local lady which was just lovely. It is clean old fashioned and the staff always have a smile!!

Nous y avons dîné en famille avec nos deux adolescents de 12 et 13 ans. Le pub est sympa, il y avait d'autres familles qui y mangeaient. Les steaks étaient bons. Il faut aller au comptoir pour prendre les boissons. Le barman nous a fait goûter cidre et bière avant de nous servir.

Decided last minutes to go out for Sunday Lunch. The pub is on our door step and we haven't been there for years. Well we have missed out. They were very busy but fitted us in. There was a choice of a small or large portion of Beef, Turkey or Lamb, I think they may rotate the meats on offer, or you could have a mixed meat plate.

Went out on Monday night for dinner.

We have visited this pub a number of times and have never had a bad meal. We visited again on Thursday13th September and received the same excellent food. One of our party wanted a steak with rice rather than a potato accompaniment and this was undertaken without hesitation. Food was cooked excellently and plenty of it.

On arrival we went to bar said we had a table was told to order all drinks at bar and food at table

Visited the pub for uncles birthday. 5 of us. All had excellent meals. Very large portions.hot and freshly prepared.the. Pub was vibrant.

My family and I have eaten at the horse and jockey for the last 3 consecutive evenings. The bar has great character, the staff have been friendly and efficient and the food has been generous in portion and well priced. Small changes to my daughters order has never been a problem and the traditional cider has been a delight. Well worth a visit!

I highly recommend The Horse and Jockey whether you want a family meal out or a night enjoying a few drinks. I can't wait to go back next time I'm in the UK. See you in Dec for more!

Called in with family. Food was good pub food and lots of it. Too much really but apart from that no faults. Mainly locals in. Landlady and staff were friendly. good service. Reasonably priced.

If you requirement is for Good Pub Grub with huge portions then you won't find many better although, in my opinion, the chips might have been better - thicker, triple cooked perhaps . Reasonably priced food, ale & cider makes this place well worth a visit. We ate in the newly? refurbished restaurant part of the pub (laminate flooring & plain walls) unfortunately however, with only a few tables occupied and people all talking at the same time the din became too loud to engage in sensible conversation - that was perhaps the only drawback that may be solved by some acoustic work.

We came across this little gem while on holiday. Full of rustic charm and could not fault the wholesome food and excellent service - make sure you leave room for pudding !

We were camping locally for the weekend and were recommended to eat here. We are so glad we did. The pub is lovely. Food excellent. Beer kept just right. I had the Faggots and my girlfriend had the Chicken and Tarragon. the portions were massive, but hot and very , very tasty. This was on Saturday night. We got there early for a pint and to relax. Food started at 6 and within a very short time the place was full - so I advise you to book or get there early.

Having walked all the way from Wells I was in fact walking to Midsomer Norton. Was looking for some liquid refreshment. Did not receive any so I walked to the George Inn at Gurney Slade where I received excellent service. Live in Merseyside where the air might not be as sweet but you receive a far better service & people do speak to one

Staying locally and this place was recommended by our hosts. We were not disappointed as we were made to feel very welcome by both the young man behind the bar and locals who were happy to help with the choice of cider! We ordered roast pork and the liver and onion special. They arrived quickly, piping hot and there was certainly plenty on the plates. Very tasty and we were too full for dessert. A very good decision for lunch on a cold, windy day.

Had a lovely sunday lunch here with family every thing was lovely lunch and pudding. Except the veg it was very hard !! They were very busy and had something on in the other room so maybe it was that.

Verry good food ,nice friendly atmosphere. Parking can be difficult when busy . Brobably dificult to find if you dont know the area. Supose it would be ok with a sat nav.

We were staying just up the road in self catering accommodation and this being the nearest pub. Great atmosphere inside and was warm and inviting.

A great meal to start a lovely weekend in the Mendip's. Efficient friendly service in a local pub. So nice to actually have a pie that had a short crust pastry! Cheerful diners and team. Cheers Nicky it was lovely to meet you!

Had my first visit to this pub today and couldn't have been more impressed. It was bitterly cold outside today so it was lovely to come in to a warm cosy pub. Very friendly and helpful bar lady. Excellent menus and specials to choose from. Lots of choice literally something for everyone. The food was delicious and good value. I will definatley be returning and would highly recommend.

Together with a group of friends, I visited the Horse and Jockey Inn for lunch. The food was wholesome and nicely presented and the service was quick and friendly. It was a Wednesday lunch time and as the pub was fairly full of local people, I assume that the friendly atmosphere wasn't at all out of the ordinary.

Me pareció que mi primera visita a este pub relajado y agradable. Fuera del camino de una carretera principal tengo que admitir que si no sabía dónde estaba usted fácilmente podría perderse.

Out with my best friends to celebrate a birthday found this pub to be very traditional with very friendly welcome! Food was great and very good value for money! Service was spot on!
