Horse and Jockey in Hinckley and Bosworth

Had always wanted to visit H&J and finally made it happen today for Sunday lunch fervently hoping would be great having looked at the impressively designed menu online. So many young staff in the restaurant (no problem with that as great to see them working) yet aimlessly walking around & no visible leadership. Yet of greater significance was that our food was bland & mediocre. Tasteless sirloin beef. Bisto gravy. Plastic Yorkie puds. I’d say the kitchen lacks heart & pride versus the menu on paper looking excellent. Just going through the motions. Such a shame as location, building & decor is stunning. And yet the place was actually busy. Could be a real gem in our rural countryside.

We used to come 2 or 3 times a year and then just got out of the habit. So we came again on Feb 14th and weren't disappointed. Really good food, ambience and service. The menu is really, really good. We had garlic mushrooms and pate to start. Fantastic. Then chicken main was superb. Desserts are all really good. Not the cheapest but fair.

First time we’ve been in many years, and will be back soon. Faultless food, service and a pleasure to have decent space around the table. A great drink and food selection. What more could you want?

Lovely place and great food. Service a little slow but I think that's because everything was home cooked but took a long time to try and get the bill.

Visited on New Year’s Day and left disappointed. We did write to then manager but never received any response. We usually to visit regularly before new owners took over so we thought we’d give it another go for my mums birthday. The table was late ( not major, but an apology would have been nice) my food was missed of the order (again no apology) and we were constantly waiting/ looking around for staff. Another server took our payment and removed the service charge but it didn’t affect her day. Bit of a shame as this used to be our local go to but not anymore.

Ate at horse and jockey 3 times this month. Food delicious. Staff friendly and can't do enough for you. They work very hard. The pub itself is so pleasant with comforting open fire. Can't wait to go back. We are so lucky to be local. We'll done

NY Eve 24 Seemed like the staff were all new and didn't quite have it all together. Food was good but menu seemed smaller than before. Will be back but hope they are back to their polished selves next time.

Great vibe to the place. It’s usually busy when I go in there and that’s a sign that the locals enjoy it as it’s in the middle of the countryside. The food is awesome and has never disappointed. The staff are friendly but not overbearing. I look forward to my next visit.

Visited here last Friday with the girls. Great venue, large yet still cozy, well styled, nice atmosphere. Service great, food great, will be back.

We went today to celebrate a birthday in the family. Area we sat in was cold and we had to ask for the heating to be switched on which seemed a bit of an effort for the staff involved to sort which should not have been! Unfortunately as well the food was not up to what we expected sadly Festive meal option had by 4 of us was underwhelming and seemed put together in a hurry Two pizzas we ordered were over cooked and crust very hard You gave us some money off the overall bill when we complained but unless you sort this a lot of people will vote with their feet which is a shame as the venue is great

Mixed feelings about our visit. We were asked 6 times by 6 different staff what we would like to drink and each time we told them we had ordered and waiting. Sunday lunch nice but ‘parsnips’ were actually ‘parsnip’ yes singular. No water offered no check backs very young team of staff and everyone is referred to as ‘’guys’’ Upmarket pub with pub service and restaurant prices. Decent but not great

A homely country pub with a warm atmosphere and roaring fire in winter months. There is a cosy bar and lounge area for dining. The pictures and ornaments are available to purchase and very unusual and unique. The service can be slow when busy. Staff are friendly and helpful. There is a very large car park at the rear.

We booked a table online for a Saturday lunchtime and we were greeted warmly by the staff. We were a party of 6 and the food was delicious. Great service, lovely atmosphere...highly recommended!

Excellent food and service. Impressive menu and the whole family enjoyed their dishes. A nice mix of classic and contemporary with easygoing but attentive service at its heart. We will be returning. Thank you.

Late saturday late lunch.(3pm) Attentive and friendly service. Portions are good and food was very enjoyable. Pie was more pastry than filling but on the whole an enjoyable meal.

Slight issue with the booking, which was quickly resolved. Staff were friendly and helpful. Food was well cooked and good quality ample choices for children and adults. We enjoyed our luncheon.

A lovely evening. Super food and delightful service from a range of hard working young people who worked well as a team to ensure we had a lovely meal. Range of food on the menu tempted us to try something new and we weren’t disappointed. Staff listened to our order and checked on our satisfaction. A great way to celebrate our anniversary and looking forward to returning to trying out something else on the menu! Already booked for a November treat!

Food very good but had to wait a long time to be served . This was a Wednesday so not the busiest of times I would have thought.

Great food service & an excellent place to eat

This restaurant is by far the best sunday lunch spot for miles around , but yesterday was a disappointment ,the bruschetta was burnt black ,and had a bitter taste , The mains order was mixed up and we were presented with the wrong food , the beef was so thin it was see through and very fatty . hopefully this is a one off

Very disappointed today with our Sunday lunch. The customer service was non existent. we explained to our server that our food was warm, with vegetables being cold. It was like a poor comedy sketch as we were asked what we wanted todo about it ! We suggested they change the veg for hot vegetables , the server seemed reluctant and confused how to do this simple issue. The atmosphere in the lounge was also very odd. staff looked miserable and we felt they just didn’t want to be there. They are very young and need training.. There is something very different now and not in a good way. We won’t return .

Horse and Jockey never dissapoints, we are regulars and they never have gone wrong. Servers were friendly, quick and attentive, wasn't hard to get hold of them if you needed a drink top up. Food was perfect (as always) their current pistachio créme brullee is incredible, very light but utterly delicious. Everyone was so happy with their meals. I love going here also because the ambience is so calm and cosy. The music isn't loud or in your face, the lightings really soft and it truly feels like if you sat on a nearby chair by the fire for an after dinner nap, nobody would mind or wake you up save to ask if you needed a blanket! Will be back, and thanks for a perfect evening.

A fantastic restaurant, fabulous menu and great food. Nothing was too much trouble we were a group of ten. Staff very happy to serve drinks at the table for us all, very obliging when we bought a birthday cake with us to the restaurant. Great food quality at great prices and staff spot in, highly recommended

Lovely pub, with attentive staff. Roast lamb was sadly fatty and the stoneware plates went cold too quickly which, meant the food went cold. All in all, we won't be returning 😔

Excellent food and service. We visited three times on our boating holiday which says it all really. I imagine it can get busy at weekends, so probably worth booking if you can.

We stopped here for lunch, we didn't reserve a table, but best to. The interior has ornaments, paintings and other items for sale. Lots to look at. I wanted the fish fingers sandwich, but they use batter instead of breadcrumbs. I had the hunters chicken sandwich with fries, my husband had the prawn and crab sandwich with fries. The fries were lovely and fresh with a nice crisp nice when biting them. My sandwich was nice, the bloomer bread was soft. My husband said his bread was dry and the prawn and crab was bland. It could have done with a few sprinkles of chilli flakes. We both had one scoop of ice cream, strawberry and cherry, both were fine. I've given 5 ⭐ due to accommodating us without a booking and my food was fine.

First time at this pub and would certainly recommend. It was a Friday evening and the restaurant was very busy hence the delay in getting our main course. The staff recognised our wait and apologised for the delay. It’s a great place to eat and look forward to our next visit.

Myself and fiancé absolutely love this place. It holds a special place in our hearts. The atmosphere is lovely. Staff are so friendly. The food is mouth watering!

Passing by on a canal holiday. Strolled into Congerstone. Went to the H&J Really excellent Food provision. Served hot and flavoursome. Great diverse menu. Solid real ale offering too. TT Landlord, Sharp's IPA & Bass Good service. Nice buzz for a Wednesday lunchtime Money well spent. Empty plates. Happy customers

I genuinely had an amazing experience here! The service was phenomenal, even when my group wanted to change seating areas and they were still so busy! But they got us sorted right away and were so genuine with their interactions with us and others around. The atmosphere was also beautiful. I’m not from here but it’s amazing to see how old things are and well maintained. The people in this place were very lovely. Some even sharing a word or two. Everybody seemed so lovely and kept the atmosphere of the restaurant very homey. And my god the food.. I know I went when I was hungry but I still reckon this was some real good food! I had the BBQ pulled pork sandwich, some cheesy garlic bread and the sticky toffee pudding. And the portions are good sizes, the food tastes great. I honestly highly recommend this place. It was third time lucky for me and my friends. The vibes of the place just made it such a beautiful place to come to for a meal. The dining setting (separate from the bar area) would be perfect for an evening date.

What a lovely pub in super location but boy was the service style very odd Lots of young staff who were rushing around and more interested in taking your food away then letting you enjoy your meal in a relaxed atmosphere. I was asked twice if I'd finished for every part of my meal when was clearly holding cutlery or my husband was eating. Wasn't even too busy. No chance to even read the menu before being asked to order. Think they should have dedicated table staff rather than each of them rushing around. Felt they were trying to out do each other. Also strange that soft drinks ie lime and soda couldn't be pints and came in the smallest glasses. Very odd Food ok. Just needs someone to control over enthusiastic young people!

Popped in for dinner lunch with friends and the food was excellent.

Had my 60th Birthday meal here. The food, beer, gin and staff are all outstanding. The decor in the bar and restaurant is wonderful. I'm going frequent this place much more often. Thanks.

A lovely fish finger sandwich for lunch. Friendly staff

Very disappointed that one person from our party of ten were refused sandwiches and fries, as we were sitting in the restaurant. At the time there were no other customers and yet the only option was for that person to have to sit in the bar alone, disgrace and very disappointed when our overall bill was in excess of £200, inc £18 service charge. Will not recommend out of principle and sheer unhelpfulness. I appreciate bar snacks may not be served in the restaurant however we were a group of 10 and only one that was not feeling particularly well opted for a light option.

Beautiful pub in a lovely rural location. Loads of parking. Staff were attentive and polite. The food was perfect, and I can be very judgemental! Well worth a visit.

We discovered this absolute gem last month, and have been back three times already! I cannot fault it in any way, it’s wonderful.

Unfortunately this beautiful country pub is let down by totally disinterested staff. They bang plates on the table, throw menus at the end of the table where nobody is even sitting whilst practically continuing to walk past, fail to ask if you need anything once your meal has been pushed in front of you (such as sauces) and don’t ask if everything is ok with the meal. On a previous visit, a whole main course even got forgotten and wasn’t ordered from the kitchen! I’d like to say it was a one off experience, but unfortunately not. The only saving grace is that they have a fantastic chef and the food is lovely.

Great gastro pub, food was great. Only strange thing is they put loads of pepper on the gammon.

We are on our narrowboat and first visited about 15 months ago.What can I say absolutely superb service and food.I had a crab and prawn tian for starter and then Guinea fowl for main.The best pub meal I have had in a very long time.Do not miss this gem of a place.

In short the Horse and Jockey is a very nice country pub. Being local I often stop for a drink whilst on a walk, this is very pleasant whether sat outside in the summer or by the fire in winter. The choice of drinks while not extensive is more than sufficient, the Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc and Aspal cider are favourites of mine. The menu in the restaurant isn't gourmet but everything i have tried is very nice and of high quality. It is pretty much as you'd expect of up market country pub food. The pies are of especial note, being a proper pie and none of this dish with a pastry lid rubbish. The Sunday roasts are also very nice.

Quality Sunday lunch, staff are excellent, good atmosphere. Cannot think of a negative, this is a very well run business.

Haven’t been here in a while since it’s been done up. We popped in for a drink and some lunch one Saturday afternoon recently and we were not disappointed. We ordered from the lunch menu, which was fantastic value!! Lovely atmosphere inside too.

Great food and service in nice surroundings. A little off the beaten track, but well worth a visit. Prices very reasonable for the quality of food. I'd recommend booking. We booked on a Saturday night for 1830 and by the time we were leaving circa 2 hours later the place was pretty full - I think you'd get turned away if you just rocked up! I can't see us being in the area again, but if we ever are, we'll certainly be stopping here for a bite to eat.

This was always somewhere that provided excellent food in a reasonably convivial environment depending on the mood of the manageress! Now recently bought out and in decline with no interest in customer experience. Food is still good but atmosphere and customer service matter and here it is treated now as an inconvenience by the team management. We won't return, at 120 quid for a pub supper there are many places that value customers more

great lunch here, hidden gem, came december too but the menu seemed different the, much better now - I will be bsck for sure.

Very lovely place. Food was a total let down. Camembert tasted sour. And the pulled pork burger was very dry and bland. As a regular I have high hopes for this place. But after this I don’t think I’ll be returning or recommending the food. Very disappointing as my local!

Arrived without booking but was shown to bar table quickly by a lovely gentleman. Went to bar to order food and drink, had menu in my hand, I know i'm only 5ft tall but was totally ignored by a girl who walked by 3 times. Finally gave up and left. Shame as had been there once before with work colleagues and was really nice. Today was a different experience!

We had a nice meal here. The staff were attentive, and the food was really nice and arrive quite quickly. Only 1 out of the five of us didn't love it. But all the starters went down well. My wife had a steak, and she said it was one if the nicest she'd had. Being vegetarian, the choice wasn't super for me, but what I had was tasty.

Visited today for a Sunday roast - excellent food, great service (especially from Mike who looked after us very well) and would definitely recommend!

Went in for a pint but stayed for pie and another pint, great pub lovely atmosphere and music, attentive staff, thank you we'll be back

Best destination gastro pub in area

We just popped in for a drink halfway through a walk. We stood waiting at the bar for a long time before someone came to serve us each of the 3 times we went to the bar and then they weren't that friendly. Nice setting.

Great resturant, good food and atmosphere. Only downside is the descretionary 10% service charge added to the bill for tables of over 5. If you are going to do this then add it to ALL bills regardless of the number of occupants. I also do not see why it is added to the cost of the drinks the bar is only 10m away and it adds over £2 for a bottle of wine. My service charge would have been over £30 which I considered excessive, I then had the embarisment of asking to have it removed.

They didn't rush us but service was good. The portions were very generous and the main course and dessert were very tasty. We took our daughter and family who had not been there before, they were very impressed. Would certainly recommend this place.

Been going there for years as it's only an hour's walk from home. Have the soup and sandwich deal but recently, they've cut down the sandwich choice to just 2 so not as varied as I'd like. However, the service has improved of late - waiting time previously could be as long as 40 mins despite no-one else being in. Now down to 15ish mins. All the staff are really nice.

3/4 stars, food was good there's no doubt about that, the decor was nice, seats were leather lined and cracked looked a little tired. Overall it was a nice experiance, service was overall OK but was let down at the end of the meal where staff were rushing round us making tables up for the following day (we were one the last sittings) but neglected to come to us, after half an hour we had to chase things up. Just a slight let down on what was overall a nice experiance.

Read so much about this place so decided to take wife for Sunday lunch well building and ambiance when into bar area haddog with us Ordered drinks and sat down no one come over to us so asked for menu ve comprehensive I may had wife didn’t want starter I again had to go to bar and ask what was the soup of the (mushroom) to which I ordered and we both chose the lamb (So far so good my soup arrived and can only be described as MAGNiF Here’s where it all goes down 🤑 Our lamb arrives and at first glance looks nice however there where 3 supposedly roast potatoes I tried to cut in it and was like leather the smell from said potato was like horrible and tasted just as bad just like you where eating a raw potato I went to bar and explained to n’armant he said he would get them exchanged and to be fair they did another man brought out 3 more with gravy so put one on my plate which was exactly the same as the ones I’d sent back this along with the thinnest slices of fat / lamb and undercooked veggies had by this time spoilt my appetite we finished our drinks I then went up to bar to pay and explain all of above to my surprise I would probably had more attention from my DOG so to conclude having spent the best part of £60 from my children s inheritance fund ! My wife and I left feeling really underfed and very disappointed with our experience

We have just visited today for Sunday lunch! The food was good but we’re sat on a table next to the door into the kitchen which was like being sat in a wind tunnel! When we left I pointed out how dissatisfied were with this and both the managers were not bothered! My husband helped his 95 year mother out the door, I was on crutches and both men stood there and watched me struggle and at no point helped me! Totally disgusted!!!!!

Pie night and a pint on a Monday means you can only have a alcoholic drink. Coke or 0.0 beers are not included, which doesn't make sense. Most people have to drive here, which I think encourages drink driving.
