We had a fantastic meal at Hornsbury Mill. We arrived quite late on a Monday evening after getting stuck in roadworks but we were made so welcome and had a lovely relaxing meal. There's an excellent range of menu choices, and all the food we had was superb. We were so impressed. We'll definitely be back soon.

The restaurant, surroundings and service was great. However, the Sunday lunch was not enjoyable. I had Turkey which was not fresh Turkey seemed like a processed meat. Roast potatoes were more like boiled. I would give a 4/10 For Sunday Lunch.

Came here for a birthday meal with my family. I have a very long list of food intolerances but the chef was amazing and finally I have found someone who I can trust to cook for me that listens and gives me confidence about eating out in the absolute knowledge that I won't be poorly. The staff are all really friendly and nothing is too much trouble. The setting is beautiful even in February with the lake, waterfalls, fountain and river. The waterwheel is still in situ and the history still in evidence. All of our meals were delicious and desserts were a little bit naughty but oh so good! Will definitely be back.

I came here this afternoon with my mum and my auntie for a cream tea. We were lucky enough to have sunny weather and be able to sit outside and enjoy the absolutely beautiful views. We were extra lucky to see the peacock and peahen too! The scones were delicious, very light and fluffy and baked to perfection! The accompanying jam & cream were yummy too. A truly fabulous location. The staff were very helpful, smiley and friendly as well as being really attentive. Thank you very much to all the staff at Hornsby Mill for a perfect afternoon! 😊

We recently had our wedding at Hornsbury Mill and have to say we wouldn’t changed a thing. Lyndsay, our coordinator was brilliant throughout the planning and the day itself and catered to all our wishes. She was so helpful, reassuring and professional, which means a lot when you’re planning the most important of your life ! The setting was beautiful and our guests loved the peacocks. The cornloft where we had our ceremony is so pretty and the orangery where are reception was is a lovely bright room. The food was absolutely delicious and the best we have had in a long time. The portions were great too!! All our guests commented on how lovely it was. I would highly recommend Hornsbury Mill. A big thank you to Lyndsay,Jane,Chloe and the chef and all the other staff for making our special day extra special !

Decided to go here for lunch recently. Friendly welcome and asked if we'd like to sit in the lounge to look at the menus or go straight through to the dining room - we opted for the later.Left to decide on our menu choices and then orders were take. Food arrived and was okay, although we both found slimy elements among the salad leaves served as garnish, so presumably not exactly fresh. The dining room was very cold and I was pleased to get in the car to warm up. Given that this is winter, may be they need to think about the heating used for this area. Also think it is perhaps time this venue was updated, as it is definitely beginning to look quite dated and tired in places. To summarise, the service is definitely better than the food and overall the dining experience here was disappointing.

We booked a table in the evening on the 9th November for 4 in the restaurant to celebrate my birthday. It was a Friday evening so we expected a busy and lively atmosphere, but the restaurant and bar were almost empty and there was absolutely no atmosphere. Maybe the heavy rain that evening mean't there had been a number of last minute cancellations? The bar had run out of bitter from the pump and everywhere just felt cold and uninviting. The staff were pleasant and attentive so no issues there, but the food was a real disappointment. The lamb rump was fine but the sea bass three of us ordered was not good. We were each given one small thin fillet with very little meat on it. A big bowl of steamed and boiled vegetables arrived a little later and was a reminder of 80's pub grub and so boring no one wanted them. The puddings were dull by today's standards and the Raspberry Crème Brulee was served in a tiny espresso cup...one of the meanest portions I have ever seen for £5.95. We left feeling very disappointed with a restaurant and food that was well below par for the area and for the money we paid. Maybe we were just unlucky with our choice of evening?

Four of us ate here in the Spring. What a lovely riverside venue, with waterfowl in the grounds, and the mill workings still in evidence inside. We ate well – two starters of walnut and pear salad, and one prawn cocktail. No one was disappointed! We got married here 14yrs ago so we had wanted to go back for a meal on our wedding anniversary given that it holds special memories for us. The grounds are beautiful, the staff friendly and the food is fine - for an average pub meal. We do eat out quite a lot and I work in the speciality food industry so we are quite fussy and we do expect fairly high standards - just to put this reveiw into perspective for others. If you are looking for low-key establishment, no atmosphere and basic pub food, then this will be a delight as there was absolutely nothing wrong with the food and the staff were all courteous and pleasant but for us it is just average - especially as the prices are average to high I would suggest for what you get in terms of quality cuisine and service. I would pay those prices elsewhere and get much better quality and better presented food with much better service. The interior of Hornsbury Mill desperately needs some money being spent on it - and some loving attention to detail would not go a miss! I honestly believe that all the furniture is still the same furniture they had when we got married 14yrs ago!!! They have a lovey area in the bar with sofas but they are all so old and lacking in any support whatsoever! They had local radio on in the background to keep you company with adverts being played - not my idea of a nice evening out at all!!! When our meals were ready we were taken through to the restaurant where we were the only diners! We had noticed whilst walking the grounds before entering, that there had been another couple sitting at this same table prior to us - so they obviously just redress the one table! Candles on each table but never lit - that would have been a nice romantic gesture for our wedding anniversary hey?! Fresh carnations in the vase on the table although totally void of any water! Menu's are basic in both their offering and in their presentation. We asked for a bottle of Rioja - but there were 2 on the wine list but we didn't get the chance to advise which bottle of Rioja we wanted as the waitress had already disappeared as soon as we said a bottle of Rioja! A glass was brought - which was filthy! It was very evidently red in colour with lip 'grease' marks around the rim - it had obvioulsy not been washed and they were probably recycling the wine glasses from the previous diners as well as the same table!!! They did bring us a clean glass when we pointed this out. We were brought the bottle of wine and a bottle of water but neither were opened for us (let alone poured!!) - and just plonked on the table. In fact, we had trouble opening the bottle of wine so we had to call the waitress to open it for us. The waitress was in the the midst of bringing out our main meals to us when she was loudly called back by the chef as he had forgotten to put the mushrooms on the plates! A similar thing happened at dessert time - we heard the chef loudly announce to the waitress that he couldn't find the Baileys ice cream so they decided between them in the kitchen just to give us another scoop of another flavour - without even asking us!!!! It was just brought to the table and we were told they didn't have any baileys ice cream so they had given us another scoop of salted caramel icecream instead!!! We weren't asked if we needed any sauces with our meals so we had to ask for ourselves and at no point were coffees offered. Once the chef left for the evening upon serving up our desserts, the music went with him - so whilst they did have music playing in the restaurant rather than the local radio station (!) that had been in the bar, once he had gone, there was no music either! So the atmosphere was even more deathly quiet than before! In fact we wondered if we would just be forgotten about and locked in for the evening!!! We were just getting up from our table to go and pay at the bar when the waitress finally came out to us to confirm, that yes, we can pay at the bar on our way out. It was all quite funny to be honest but such poor service - so lacking in any 'polish'. What a shame! We probably wouldn't return to this restaurant again. We have been back 2 or 3 times since we got married 14yrs ago and each time we leave disappointed by total lack of atmosphere / ambiance (always pretty much the only ones dining - other diners have all obviously learnt the lesson that we haven't!!) and the food is really nothing special or out of the ordinary and the service definitely isn't! There is absolutely no attention to detail and yet, spend that (£88 for 2) in other places and the service and attention to detail is impeccable. We will go to those establishments going forward! We keep hoping that some money has been spent on sprucing up this restaurant and there may therefore be more people present, more atmosphere, a different chef, different owners, better menu, better service, etc etc but unfortunately it just isn't the case so it is probably time for us to call a day on this lovely venue steeped in memories for us......

A pleasant setting but not a great deal of atmosphere due to the rest of the Hotel being empty apart from our party sat in the conservatory. The salmon starter arrived as a small portion on a very large slate plate. It tasted o.k. but there was very little of it. The turkey dinner was o.k. though the vegetables looked overcooked and many of our party complained that the plates upon which it was served were cold. I didn't taste the christmas pudding but I've never seen a slice of pudding before (!) and my friends complained it was dry and like a hard cake not a pudding at all. So sadly the experience was disappointing and therefore unlikely to attract our party to revisit.

We dined here with a friend, from the Christmas menu. The gravlax starter promised good things to come but the turkey was rather disappointing. Were we actually eating turkey, we wondered – it was difficult to tell from the taste. The root vegetables were generally good but the Brussel sprouts were under-cooked and the Savoy cabbage was over-cooked. We’ve tasted better Christmas pudding and the crème brûlée was a very poor example of the genre – far too ‘set’ and lacking creaminess. This place has a somewhat unprepossessing entrance, although the lounge is cosy enough. However, the restaurant is largely devoid of cosiness and the absence of table cloths makes for a rather ‘basic’, sterile look. In our view this is not ‘fine dining’ and although Hornsbury Mill is certainly smarter than The Cotley Arms at Wambrook (see out review of that pub) it lacks the food quality and presentational finesse which The Cotley has achieved so splendidly. We would not dine here again.

My daughter attended a Christmas office party here and was so impressed that we decided to visit for a family birthday celebration.I booked online for Sunday lunch for nine of us including three children.Initially, I was extremely impressed when I received prompt, courteous email confirmation and was asked if we needed any high chairs.Regrettably, it was all downhill from here.We arrived on the day and had drinks at the bar before being escorted to our table.Three of the party had a starter and then we waited.....................and waited. We saw food leaving the kitchen for other parties that had arrived after us and then through the open doors saw that the kitchen appeared to be being cleared and tidied as though they were finished. We even joked that the staff would all be going home!We waited a little longer......Eventually, after over 45 minutes, our waitress emerged, apologetic for the wait, but with some food! Thank goodness! The children were absolutely ravenous by now!The food was cold. The vegetables were so al dente that they were cold and crunchy and definitely, not appropriate to accompany roast beef, even if it was barely warm.We had obviously been completely forgotten and instead of an explanation and appropriate apology, they tried to carry on as if nothing was wrong. This was bitterly disappointing, particularly as they were aware that it was a family celebration .Needless to say, they were not at all surprised when we complained.I have to admit that our complaint was dealt with sympathetically and fairly (I think the lady's name was Jane who dealt with us), we were only charged for our drinks and they were most apologetic.Unfortunately, it didn't make up for a precious family celebration being ruined.

Went for a mothers day meal today and was truly horrified by service and food standards. The staff were not welcoming or attentive. There was 9 of us and to start our ticket was apparently misplaced then we were served cold soup and one starter was forgotten, for mains we had roasts and the veg was luke warm and under cooked so still crunchy and for pudding they served us frozen yoghurt trying to pass it off as ice-cream. Also staff weren't polite and didn't know the first thing about table etticate. However they tried to apologise by dumping a bottle of wine on our table when none of us were drinking wine.Overall it wasn't a enjoyable experience and I wouldn't recommend.

The Hornsbury Mill Restaurant is on the A358 on the road from Chard towards Ilminster. It is in a distinctly rural location, with fairly large grounds with a little river running though and containing and a small lake/pond c/w ducks and peafowl! Widely used for Wedding receptions and similar functions, it is a really "comfortable" place to take Lunch or Dine of an evening. While it is well placed for people from as far away as Yeovil to the East and Exeter to the West, it is also a really good place to stop if you are heading for The West Country from London or the East, being only about 3 miles off the A303.The food is good, the staff are very pleasant, and give a gentle unobtrusive service. There is a typical "English Country Hotel" atmosphere about the place that makes you feel "at home" and yet "on holiday" at the same time! There is never a feeling that you are "being rushed", yet there is never a long wait for ones meal. The food menu is varied, and they have a reasonable but not extensive wine list. From Monday to Fridays they offer a Special Lunch, which offers 2 courses from most of the menu (but not all) at a very competitive priceThe bar itself is small, but the room that it serves is not. We like to sit in the well stuffed chairs while we chose our food and again afterwards while we take our coffee. We just love it!If you are coming a long distance, it is probably best to ring to make sure of a table. Tel/FAX: 01460 63317 or email: info@hornsburymill.co.uk

120 of us booked in for a dinner function. Greeted by 1 person serving at the bar. Then ran out of change, so had to wait. It was not as if it was a surprise.Starter of pate was served with what seemed like 2 day old bread. Not particularly appetising.Main course served with enough veg to satisfy the hunger of a small rodent, not adult persons. Not much in the way of gravy either. For desert, the locally sourced cheeses seemed to have been sourced from the local Tesco along with the tired dry sticks of celery. Biscuits were abundant, but 1 small rectangle of butter was not enough to cover 1 small hovis biscuit, let alone 2 cream crackers. Our table was missed for coffee, so we had to ask.Overall, poor service, meagre portions, lack of bar staff made this a night to forget. We won't be back in a hurry.

Ashleigh and her colleague were excellent hosts and cleared a large table with an excellent outside view of wildlife including peacocks just for the two of us. The roast pork and topside were both exceedingly tasteful coupled with a generous helping of well cooked vegetables and the deserts were of the same high standard. Ashleigh and her friend displayed a great sense of humour and instead of eating at our regular restaurant close by in Devon, we will definitely be returning to the Hornsbury Mill for another meal. We were directed to The Orangery, but there was no one serving at the bar! After a while someone came and we ordered our drinks. Not a good start. We had pre-ordered our food which was served at the agreed time. I had ordered Pate (no problems there), Rump of Beef (a steak knife would have been handy) and a selection of Ice Creams (which were among the nicest that I had ever eaten). I learned later that the Ice Cream was made at the Mill. Some people mentioned that their food was cold, but I didn't have a problem with this.

We popped in on the off chance on Sunday evening we have eaten here many times over the years and with different owners. The restaurant had 12 covers that night and 3 waitresses. I was disappointed to arrive to find an uncleared table that remained that way the whole time we were eating :( starters were prompt but hot food took an hour although really good so no complaints on that score. We were a little peeved that others who arrived after us were served before us and to compound things when the waitress kept apologising to the table to the side of us for their wait and not us we felt forgotten and then she offered them a free glass of wine and 10% off the bill! Guess mine is in the post. So £87 later what would I say great food chef is doing well just needs either to speed up or get help. Presentation was very good. Staff were pleasant although not attentive to the restaurant or guests. We were not given an opportunity to order more drinks. So little things that made it not 5 excellent but things can be turned around and addressed going forward.

Trying to book a table here is near impossible, as they only seem to have one phone and it's rarely manned. On this occasion we just turned up hoping for a free table. Luckily we were told they could fit us in. The food was tasty and menu fairly good. Could be a little longer. The only negatives were the lack of sauce on the mixed grill which made it dry, and it only came with 5 chips!!! Our first choice pub (The Cotley) was fully booked, but this restaurant was very quiet, which I can only guess is because they never answer the phone? We will return and hopefully the chef puts a few more chips on, as they were delicious.

We went to a wonderful wedding. This venue is beautiful, with a pretty lake to wander around. The food was excellent. We enjoyed the day. But just a warning for the ladies!! Leave your designer heels behind. The gravel will ruin them !!

We had the "two courses for £12.95" lunch on a Tuesday. It was very quiet and we ate in the bar (they did offer to open the restaurant but there was only one other couple eating). Very friendly staff. Limited menu. The food was OK - hot and well cooked but "pub grub" rather than restaurant level. Don't expect much in the beer department! Had a quick look round afterwards - lovely garden with millpond and lots of space for large parties.

Visited the Mill for a day trip with a group of friends, some of who were quite elderly.Lovely setting. Great facility for a Group event. Lovely new extension which enabled us to all be together for lunch. The food at lunch was very good. Quite a limited choice because we were a party of over 20, but the food was very good. Well served by friendly and helpful staff.Would definitely recommend it.

We visited the restaurant for a family meal prior to a wedding. The meals had to be preordered as we were a large party. The service was swift, and the meals well presented. Not a massive selection of meals available, but should suit most tastes.

Very pretty setting on a small river-lots of space outside with seating--but watch the kids--open water and streams .Lovely building-but thought the food was very average plus a bit over-priced--all of our party thought it was not very "special". Will not go there again--other much better choices in the area.

We went here for cream tea as part of the celebrations for Hubbys parents Diamond Wedding Anniversary. What a lovely afternoon. The cream tea was gorgeous with lots of lovely cream and jam. The surroundings are also very beautiful and the band stand had garlands around it, as it is a wedding venue. This was great for a few pictures for the scrap book.

Small intimate restaurant with views of the old water mill wheel. Locally sourced food, cooked fresh, presentation outstanding, and tasted delicious. Home made beefburgers a dream so was the mouth watering fish with chunky chips. Deserts also tasted so delicious.

Having tried most places in the area, this place is one of the best. The food was excellent quality and very good value for money. It's a shame when we visited we were the only ones there, which was a bit of a surprise considering how Good the food was and how friendly the staff were.

Recommended by a neighbour. Our first visit since moving to the area and we weren't disappointed with the Sunday Lunch. Beautiful location with a warm welcome. Comfortable lounge for a pre-dinner drink whilst making selections from a limited but balanced menu. Waiting staff very polite and attentive without being annoying. The food was fresh from local producers, the roast beef beautifully rare, thickly sliced but tender and full of flavour. Our only critism was that the menu stated that gravy was served on the plate but a separate jug could be requested. This we duly did but still had to remind the waiting staff! Will be returning shortly and frequently!

I visited for a weekday lunch. I ate chicken stuffed with brie, with sweet potato and vegetables. For dessert I went for sticky toffee pudding with banana ice cream. It was all delicious. The vegetables were cooked just right, not a hint of the softness of overcooking. I'm not sure I'd ever have put chicken and brie together but it was an interesting taste. The sweet potato stack was delicious. Everything was well-presented and I found the staff to be very helpful and friendly. We will absolutely back. We haven't visited for four or five years following a very disappointing visit so we were delighted at this meal. The ducks and geese, as ever, are delightful.

We were married here in September 2014 and our family treated us to a night in the same room last night, 31st January 2016, as a birthday present for me. This included an evening meal and breakfast.I had a Tiger prawn starter, a steak main course and THE best cheese board I have ever had, as the third course. The food could not have been better. Everything was perfectly cooked with top quality ingredients, beautiful flavours and hot to the end. We were served by a lovely waitress who was attentive and very helpful. The restaurant has a lovely atmosphere and the whole place is like a lovely country cottage. The room was lovely with everything you need and the bathroom was spotlessly clean. We had breakfast this morning which was equally as good. Help your self to cereal, yoghurt, toast, fruit juice etc while the chef cooks your full English. It states on the breakfast menu that breakfast is cooked to order and may take up to 20 minutes but ours was less than 10 minutes and I cannot remember ever having such a nice breakfast in any hotel, anywhere.Book your stay here, or just an evening meal and you will not be disappointed. We will definitely return.

We went in to meet with our wedding coordinator on Sunday to discuss some details about our 2016 wedding. afterwards we had Sunday lunch, it was so good! The meat was so tender, huge bit of beef cooked to perfection, perhaps slightly too pink for my fiancé but i thought it was perfect, the Turkey was lovely & moist, not at all dry, could have perhaps done with more gravy but I'm sure if we asked we could have had some, the roast potatoes were crispy on the outside & fluffy inside! we were really pleased with the quality of the food, best roast dinner I've had for a while, would definitely go back for a roast again. The staff were all really lovely & friendly too, great service!

Our group of 4 were able to have a table in view of the Water Wheel. A great talking point for us. Somewhat slow getting to table. Very quiet that night, no-one rushed to greet us, but eventually it ' all came together'. Our meals were ' delicious' and timely considering we had 4 different entrees. Table service was attentive and we were given time to sit and chat over coffees and desserts. A very pleasant environment.

This, if you are of a certain age, will most definitely conjure up images of that classic series. We've only been once, for lunch, and the food was fine but nothing special, and it was a bit like eating in a big lounge. The hotel gentle bustles around you, which I quite liked, and I'd imagine a wedding here would be a hoot, but there are better lunchtime eateries to be had these days.

Things didn't get off to a good start when we arrived. We didn't know exactly where the restaurant was, so we walked into the bar, and the one bar lady was busy with a few people. We saw and followed the sign to the restaurant, where there were two occupied tables, but no sign of any staff. After a couple of minutes one did appear and said to go to the bar, to where we returned. I ordered drinks and said we wanted a table in the restaurant, but as soon as she served our drinks she moved to another part of the bar to serve someone else. We wandered back to the restaurant and about 30 seconds later the same waitress asked if we'd been sorted out with a table. I said no, so she said they weren't busy and could sit at any of the vacant tables.Once we'd sat down I couldn't really fault the service, although there was no specials menu as they were between menus (something I only found out when I asked). The normal menu was interesting, and quite reasonably priced for this kind of venue.I opted for a starter: "Spicy breaded chicken wings, julienne of cucumber, celery & red pepper with a blue cheese dip", it was sizeable in portion, but maybe a little over cooked as the outside was getting rather dark and quite crispy. For main course I opted for "Pork Tenderloin: Passanda, roasted almonds and orzo served with char-grilled flatbread, mooli and red onion relish", which was delicious, and again of generous proportion. From the bar menu dad selected "Tempura Cod: Fillet wrapped in Parma ham & lightly battered, mushy peas, triple cooked chips & tartar sauce" which he also thoroughly enjoyed. The delightful Wheelroom Restaurant has a fine view through a glass panel of the massive old water wheel, but you can also choose to eat in the bar or outside by the lakeside.Overall this was a very pleasant lunch, and somewhere I'd like to return to.

Sitting in the restaurant, with views of the garden & the old water wheel turning slowly. What a selection of savoury treats, salmon, coronation chicken. What a selection of sweets, cream teas, lemon posset, eclairs, mini meringues, cakes, champagne, it just kept on coming ! Wonderful. Our ever attentive front of house staff, always on hand, boxing up the left overs, for later. A nice indulgent afternoon.

What a delightful place to stay at. We stayed for a couple of nights to visit the surrounding area and had the friendliest welcome and comfortable stay. James, the waiter in the evening, was a credit to them. He helped you choose what to eat and was attentive and friendly. The food was outstanding, especially the fish dishes. The breakfast was the best we have ever had and was cooked to order with local produce. Cannot wait to return.

Booked for dinner but on arrival, they thought we had booked for buffet, fortunately they had a table for us within a short time so we had a pre-dinner drink in the bar, which is fabulous and then went for a lovely meal in the Bistro, it is a small and intimate restaurant and quite modern and food is served on hot rocks, which you cook yourself to your own taste. Nice concept and food was really lovely BUT find that it gets pretty smoky when it is very busy. This is not a unique concept to us and it was a very nice change. Service was attentive and good and wine selection is great. Little pub at the Langport Arms is friendly and wonderful for pre or post drinks too.
