Hopgrove Toby Carvery in York

Myself and my husband booked Christmas dinner here, we booked way in advance as wanted to enjoy a good meal and as have been to Toby a few times before we knew we would not be disappointed.We were rather shocked at the price of the set meal before we went but after looking around it seemed that was the sort of price you had to pay on Christmas Day, so fair enough.To be honest didn’t start off great, we were seated on a 2 person table, drinks refill right behind my husband, people constantly walking passed which was a little annoying when we were trying to eat a meal in peace, but you just go with it don’t you.Starter wasn’t great, my husband had the tart which he didn’t really enjoy and I had the prawns and salmon which I couldn’t even eat, and where was the sauce? The carvery, meat was lovely, potatoes were quite nice, the sprouts, hard, tasted old, couldn’t eat them which was disappointing as the only veg there that I like, gravy was ok but had better on previous visits to a Toby.The dessert was awful, husband had the Christmas pudding, never seen a slab of Christmas pudding before and was not good, I had the crumble which again wasn’t nice and custard not good.For a Christmas Day experience we left feeling very disappointed, we have had Toby before and left really enjoying our meal, but not this time, I’m sorry but for the price we paid, which wasn’t cheap, and also no Christmas atmosphere at all, it could of just been any normal day, you expect a lot better than this, this whole meal was not worth half of what we had to pay, nothing much more to say really, Dinner at home next year.

Just came back from Christmas dinner here and it was alright but certainly not work the £60 each price We know we are paying for the staff on a prime day But there was no atmosphere the staff was miserable ( I get it’s Xmas day and no one want to work it but hey your working for the double money ) The starters was ok And the carvery was standard Especially when it’s in reality only with a £10 We paid extra for the staff Bit of a let down sadly

After somewhat of a traumatic hungover day after a few too many vinos the previous evening, there was only one thing that could make me happy. It was a Toby carvery. We booked a table at 19:10 however I couldn’t contain my excitement any longer so we arrived at 18:30. We had a short wait for the table but still got in earlier than we had booked. I was straight to the carvery, where my eyes met with Tom (the meat carver). I opted for the XL plate, and Tom asked if I’d like some sausages (of course I said yes I’d love some sausages). I enquired how many meats I could opt for, and I felt a buzzing sensation when the words ‘all 4’ left Toms mouth. What a euphoric feeling. I opted for 3 meats and tucked into the vegetable selection and potato’s. It was excellent and exactly what the doctor ordered. Tom really did answer all my prayers today and deserves a payrise. After devouring what felt like a portion for a family of 4, I opted for a sticky toffee pudding which was just perfect. Now I lay in a state of self pitty completely and utterly food comatosed - no better way to spend a Saturday evening.

Total lack of customer service We visited Toby Carvery at Hopgrove after a day in York. We was very hungry and the restaurant looked like a very welcoming place to have a special meal to celebrate our 25th Silver wedding anniversary. How wrong was we ! The place was not at all busy and a member of staff led us to our table and she went to tell the chef to come out and carve the meat for us. So we waited…..then after noticing that we had been waiting a while, another member of staff went and called the chef for a second, and we waited…….finally my patience snapped when the member of staff said she would call him for the third time. I said “forget it,how disgraceful to leave customers standing there that long”. She apologised and I said that it wasn’t her fault. So off we stormed.

Definitely not the place to go for a function or group booking - The whole experiance was absolutely terrible!!! Pre booked a room for a Christmas meal for our Smart car Meetup group get together for 20 people . Paid £100 in person cash deposit in October as requested. It took 3 hours 45 minutes for everyone to get fed. No one came to explain how group bookings worked, no one came at all for over an hour to take any orders then they got it wrong when they did. By the time someone did come half of the group had been and bought theirs at the bar starving, and were eating theirs. To be told that’s not allowed to get your deposit returned, after being left unattended so long that was ridiculous. We were told it all had to be on one bill. This led to total confusion some waited some didn’t, some were on starters some on third course, Two members had to leave early and had no time for a desert at all and they paid as they left at the bar . I got charged again for their food at the end. I had four carveries to pay for which was taken out of my £100 deposit . I know my group members, we meet up every weekend and never once has anyone left without paying. Staff didn’t seem to know what was going on, my starter wasn’t ordered I was left without anything for 2 hours, I had to go ask staff who took a further 39 minutes to come and tell me they hadn’t got my order. Everyone was in a total state of confusion, them and us. We had totally contradicting information given upon asking staff. Instead of everyone enjoying our Christmas celebration meal everyone was worrying more about me not getting my £100 deposit back them starving ordering and paying at the bar individually I had paid personally paid this this issue tainted the whole event. One of our members were at the bar ordering drinks front of house, and overheard staff talking about our party in a negative manner, basically telling staff to watch closely what we ordered and to make sure that no one left without paying!!! How rude front of house to hear that discussion, what totally unprofessional behaviour Some staff also seemed very grumpy with us.

Came here twice in the last 2 weeks and had fantastic service from all the staff but mainly was looked after by Guy. Will keep returning again and again!

Met with a smile by Tom who found us a table in no time. Service was lovely, friendly and helpful,our thanks to Caitlin. The food tonight was perfect, i had beautifully cooked beef with all the trimmings. The restaurant was quite and calm. Loved it! Im glad i decided not to cook tea tonight! Thank you x

Michael at the welcome station is an absolute joy, a ray of sunshine in my day! Toby Carvery are lucky to have him on their team. Our server, Kira, was lovely too, bubbly and friendly. The food was first class - amazing Yorkshire puddings and a tasty ratatouille tart (the carnivores in the party enjoyed their pork, gammon and turkey too!). The vegetables were replenished as required. Delicious meal at a very reasonable price. The only (very, very slight) negative feedback we would give was we were left standing for quite some time on our arrival before being acknowledged (though the lovely Michael made up for this when he did greet us and he was very busy at the time) and dirty plates cleared from the tables were being stacked on the payment desk (but again, there weren’t many staff running the show so perhaps this was the quickest option for them). We had a very enjoyable evening and left with very full tummies!

Very dissapointed. Go at least once a month for breakfast and always good. Not today however, arrived at 9.30am, had to wait for Yorkshires, Bacon and eggs, also no bacon hash at all. When they did eventually fill up the empty dishes and we were able to get our breakfast I overheard at least 4 other people having to ask for other items to be filled up. I have been before when much busier and never had to ask for food to be filled up.

Popped in after dropping con back off at uni. Lovely experience as always in here. Guy was our server today very concious with allergens which was appreciated lovely man nice and friendly. Told there was a wait for tables bit in after onpy a few minutes.

Okay for breakfast but very disappointing for a carvery. I don’t usually bother to write reviews but this time I’ve made an exception. The carvery food we had on offer to us was poor. Hard Yorkshire pudding, lumpy mash potato and very little options of vegetables with only frozen peas on offer as green veg. Meat was fatty and also disappointing. Carvery counter was very messy and inviting and had random food options like pre-spattered with gravy roast potato’s. £27 for 2 and would have been disappointed at half that price. Staff can’t be bothered. Place also needs a good clean. Not rocket science it’s a roast dinner after all.

Booked a table we arrived a little early but staff were quick to seat us. We were served by Callum who did a brilliant job, friendly and very helpful. Food was usual Toby standard.

Waited over an hour for our pre booked table, bar man was miserable and didn’t explain about the refillable drinks so paid for bottles and wasn’t informed until we finally sat at our table of this option so paid for 2 sets of drinks. Finally got our carvery and the server came over as we sat down to ask how our meal was, we said fine even tho we’d had one mouthful and don’t expect any issues. However the meat was purely fat and two very small rations. we didn’t touch it at this point and just ate around, the rest was mediocre but certain items were hard such as mash and stuffing indicating they had been out a while. Me and my friend ate about a quarter of our food and when asked for the bill the waiter joked and said “oh you can’t just yet you’ve not finished” to which I replied “oh yeh well yeh we didn’t find it the best” expecting abit of conversation as to why, but we was greeted with a “sure I’ll grab the bill and would you mind both leaving us a good review”! £40 for two Sunday dinners and drinks I will not be going back for that price or type of food when I know there’s places you can pay the same and at a much higher standard.

Had a pleasant trip to TC this evening, food was good, beef was beautifully cooked and customer service was excellent. Thank you Tom 👍🏻

Very tasty food. The restaurant was busy but the staff dealt well with the customers. The young man running the carvery did an excellent job, keeping efficient, calm and friendly under a lot of pressure. The young man who was serving on tables was also very efficient and pleasant. Our first visit to a Toby but will happily visit this one again!

We were staying nearby at York Caravan Park and thought we would go for dinner after a long drive from the south coast. We had to wait approx 30 minutes for a table, when we were asked to order our food we were told there was no turkey left and roast potatoes were being cooked and would be 20 minutes. Went to collect our food most of the veg looked dried out and the joints were almost gone and what there was looked unappetising. There was nobody on the counter but worse still there were flies landing on the unattended food. We finished our drinks and left.

Great place to enjoy food to enjoy with family and friends. The staff was attentive and the food was tasty as well. I would recommend.

Very slow service but our server Tom was very helpful into seeing that we got all our breakfast items. Can’t fault the customer service

Not very nice potatoes were rock hard two slices of meat cauliflower very hard not worth the money won’t be going again and not very hot.

As ever, made welcome by Cat and served with politeness and courtesy by Beth and Amber. Drinks were served promptly, food was delicious and the doggy bags were welcomed by our two dogs.

Although the food was enjoyable the customer service by the waiting staff was somewhat lacking. It was our first visit to this particular branch, so we had no idea where anything was, and the person who showed us to our table quickly disappeared. We had to ask another member of staff where the drink machine etc were. We also had to queue for 20 minutes to get our food so Allin all not the greatest of visits which was a shame as we there to celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary

We visited here whilst in the area for a weekend away. We ordered the carvery which was quite good, we did get the end of the joints of meat which meant that the meat wasn’t the best quality and quite fatty, however the vegetables were great. The option of Mac and cheese with a carvery is different and very nice, and at just over £10 a head for a carvery and unlimited drinks it was very good value for money.

Main food was naff. Canteen standard at best. Gone very downhill. The dessert were generous and decent which semi made up for it. Drink machine had half the options out of order. Was restricted to 2 carvery meats (never used to be). Ran out of mash! Gravy not as good. Roast potato's were raw. Better choice of veg than normal so maybe focus on the old saying "less is more"

we called in today at lunch time we just wanted something lite so we both chose the beef sandwich mine was in a ciabatta and my wife asked for the gluten free option the server took the order then a while later came back and said they had no gf bread so she ended up with beef and roast potatoes the roast potatoes very very dark coloured but also they were cold my ciabatta arrived shortly afterwards complete with 3 roast potatoes I quickly tucked in but the potatoes were look warm and the beef was chewy to put it politely so all in all not a very good meal I hate paying good money for food that is not up to scratch with 2 diet cokes this was £19.48 we will not be returning ,Toby carvery you need to up your game ,before we ate my wife said she fancied the lamb on the carvery another day but after we ate she said we would not bother if it was to the same standard by the way the staff were very good but to little to late

We came here on our way to Filey, Jess our server was very helpful and even got my son a doggy bag to take some Mac & cheese home. Will come again

Good Bit - met a few friends at this place for breakfast as it was convenient for all - Then - Pre paid for the 'breakfast' at the bar and extra for coffee - we shouldn't expect a lot for around £12 a head but it could be, should be, so much better than this. Fried eggs cremated and served under a hotplate - cheap baked beans, luke warm as well as the bacon, the sausage the hash browns. battered old plates were cold as well. Coffee -luke warm - food ran out - never replaced- staff seemed disinterested, disorganised - disengaged. Breakfast closes at 11.00 and I watched the senior staff line up at the buffet and I could see the steam coming off the food they were helping themselves to! Tells you all you need to know!

Very underwhelmed, carvery , saturday late afternoon. Great yorkies, there the good bits end. Very little choice of veg, both cauliflower and leeks, mixed with cheese (can't eat cheese), no cabbage or broccoli. Mash almost solidified, carrots dry. £30 for 2, won't get that back, in fairness, they won't get me back either.

Alex was awesome, helped us with our Toby app, couldn’t do more to help us and just an all round awesome guy, really happy with the service !

Not the best Toby I have visited. The carvery food was cold and the order we placed for drinks never arrived. We had to go to the bar 3 times to ask where they were. It seemed like they were very short staffed. Won’t be returning

Staying at a hotel nearby so popped in here for some british grub. Staff nice, food was plentiful and warm. Good prices and nice to see you so busy. Ill be back!

We waited a good 10 minutes before the calver came out - comment cards said his name was Jordan. No apology. I asked for a fresh Yorkshire pudding as it was the last one there for who knows how long. Jordan said no. They were stale. Very very disappointed. Won't be going there again.

Lovely meal and great service. Just a shame the state of the toilets let us down. They were very dirty, doors did not lock and no working hand dryer so had to shake our hands dry. Would rather have waited to go at home instead.

We got there at 8pm and were not expecting a huge ammount as it was late on a wet Thursday close to closing, but the welcome was really warm and the service was really attentive despite being the end of the day, Leah was really helpful and put up with our tired and many questions. Michael was great on the carvery making us feel welcome and happy and the food was really good. The pork was really tender and the Gammon cooked well. Despite being the end of service the veggies, mac n cheese, cauliflower cheese and rosties all topped off with a decent gravy went down really well. Just what the doctor ordered, good food, great staff and a respite from the weather.

Ridiculously long wait standing in a long que for the carvery .. no order in place ... carver kept leaving the stand then when he returned there was no great rush. Would have walked out, however we had pre paid at the bar. I know it's school holidays but a heads up that it would be this long would have been appreciated!! When its that busy there should be someone restocking the stand and not the carver going back and forth to the kitchen for yorkshire puddings

Great food, absolutely stuffed. Had a brilliant server at the carvery, he was pleasantly chatting with my mother. Thank you Michel, my mum loved the turkey skin.

Florian was absolutely great as were his coworkers. He was scooping up the scraps and I happened to mention that my dog would love them and he kindly grabbed a “doggy bag” to take home. Food was great and plentiful and well cooked. Waiting staff were very attentive without being overly so. A nice meal out

Just had the breakfast ,experience wasn’t great it was busy ,chef kept coming out with food but could see us all waiting for plates as there was none available. A few items were empty we had asked to restock but got bored of waiting so left them off the plate as our food was going cold. You would have thought there would have put more staff on replenishing as it was a busy bank holiday morning. Abit disappointing.

Found this restaurant after visiting Monks Cross shopping centre. I suffer with lactose intolerance and find eating out difficult sometimes. As we sat down i informed the waitress of my problem, she was extremely helpful ensuring everything I ate was lactose free . I asked if they could do my mash without milk or butter which wasn't a problem . Nothing was to much trouble they were very accommodating with my food intolerance and very helpful. The food was very tasty hot and fresh, the meats were cooked to perfection an there was a good selection of fresh vegetables. I would definitely recommend this restaurant and would like to thank the staff for their service and helpfulness during our visit. I will definitely return here.

A great experience at Toby carvery for Easter dinner. Our chef, Michael, was brilliant; great sense of humour and remembered my sausages! He even gave my family members an additional sausage each as an Easter treat. A great experience as always with the food being just what we needed.

Staff too bone idle to fry eggs so we couldn’t have any. Food cold although over cooked under the lamps. Including tea coffee as nearly £8. For a £1 more will eat a freshly breakfast at the hotel.
