We went for Sunday lunch and it was probably the best I've had, the meat melted in your mouth and the veg was brilliant with meaty gravy

Booked a table for my partners bday. Setting was lovely, great decor. Staff very attentive. Impressed by menu choices and quality of food. Opted for steak & Ale pie and mushroom linguine. Both very tasty. Kids portions good size/value. Big thank you to Jane who kindly sorted us out with bday candles/great service!

Food was excellent, staff were amazing. Very warmly welcomed. All meals were very well presented and we were not disappointed. Dog friendly as well. Although the feeling was the Chef wasn't really happy about us ordering food for the dog as it was 'inappropriate'. Come on mate we decide whether to come back or not based on experience. Don't let your staff down by being stuck up. Anyway well worth a visit and the service was excellent. I'm taking 3 dogs next time so buckle up :) x

Shocking service. My husbands meal was served 20 mins before mine. He chased it and an apology given but no other rectification until I asked for it to be taken off the bill together with onion rings ordered for my husbands main meal which materialised after he finished it. The table next to us had the same issue with the same mail meal ordered as me and a meal arrived ordered as gluten free was not gluten free. Thankfully the lady checked. When they took it away and brought a new meal back they left off the gluten free bread. I’m back in this area in 2 weeks and would not return to this pub. Very very poor

Had a lovely meal tonight (can highly recommend the steak pie). The staff are brilliant, really accommodating and really make you feel welcome. When they ran out of a dish the chef came out to apologise in person and bent over backwards with other options. If you are in the area, fancy good wholesome high quality pub grub...look no further!

Ordered two burgers for takeaway which were pleasant, not the best in the world. We're from London so I guess we're rather spoilt on that front. Absolute 5000 star review for our male server with the beard. Very very friendly and deserves a raise for his immense optimism seeing as the ambiance in the pub was a bit somber. Best server ever. Restaurant lacked charm, but food was good

Stayed 3 nights for a family funeral. The pub also did our small wake. What can I say! The accommodation was superb newly renovated so tastefully done careful to keep the character of the building. Lots of small touches in the room. Every need catered for even down to the dog blanket and bowl. Breakfast was lovely local ingredients and at a time of your choosing. We also ate each night and the food was superb. Can highly rate the steak night. The staff were all amazing attentive but not over the top. Felt very comfortable and looked after. Parking easy right in the public car park outside. I will most definitely be back. Thank you so much. Jayne x

After an amazing Sunday lunch I had a night's stay followed by breakfast. Sunday lunch was delicious. Beef brisket with all the trimmings and attentive staff who provided excellent service. The Timothy Taylor Landlord is a regular ale here and makes for a great drink. The restaurant area is cosy and relaxed and there is a snug area as well as a bar to have a pre dinner or post dinner drink. The pub has undergone extensive renovation over the years and I had the chance to stay in one of the guest rooms. The room was spacious, clean and comfortable with a double bed and a sofa. The double aspect windows provided views over the town and the decor was in keeping with the building. There was an en-suite with complimentary toiletries and a large shower. Everything needed for a perfect night's stay. In the morning breakfast is served in the bar and I chose a full English breakfast which set me up for the day ahead. The Hope and Anchor is a pub full of character, with friendly and welcoming staff. The menu has plenty of choice and the food is superb. The rooms are a great addition and will prove to be popular, I'm sure.

Really disappointed with our visit to the Hope and Anchor this afternoon. The young bar lady behind the bar had a terrible attitude, was disinterested, rude and showed really poor customer service! Two, simple questions were asked. Were there any tables available for two (answer: ‘no, doesn’t look like it, maybe in the restaurant, but I don’t know’) and, a few minutes later, was food being served (‘no’). All whilst looking away, making a cocktail. It wasn’t the fact the place was busy and no food being served, just the appalling customer service and attitude. So, won’t be back and we enjoyed a drink and meal, with pleasant staff, at the Railway Inn at Shottle!

We stayed at the Hope and Anchor in Feb in one of the new B&B rooms. The room was beautiful and in keeping with the rest of the pub & restaurant. The whole place has a warm and welcoming feel to it where the finishing touches make all the difference, including the log burner fire, the throws on the back of the chairs in the restaurant and the fresh fluffy carpets in the bedroom, it just felt very cosy. The room we stayed in was a perfect size for a couple and there was plenty of room for any bags that you have with you. The room we had was dog friendly, which is perfect seeing as Wirksworth is such a great location with access to the peak district right on your doorstep. There was enough floor space to bring a dog bed and for their bowls etc. We loved the rustic, dark look of the room, and the hallway had maps that were used as wallpaper, which I thought looked really smart. The bed was super comfy and the bathroom was fresh & new. We ate in the bar area for dinner and we were so impressed. The food is home cooked & really tasty, we both had the chili and it was delicious. There were plenty of options including tapas style mix and match starters, home cooked classic pub food and a grill section. The cocktail choices on the menu were fab, with a happy hour style deal on between a certain time. For breakfast we had a tasty Full English with a nice coffee which set us up for a walk round Carsington lake, which is only a few miles away. All in all it was such a lovely night away. Lovely place, banging food and really good service from the staff. Would definitely recommend.

As residents of Wirksworth we keep trying this place in the “hope” that it might of improved. The service is snail paced and slow, with staff that aren’t on the ball or attentive to customers experiences. We were at our table approximately 25 mins before we got a drink. After nearly 40 minutes of waiting for food, a Sunday roast which presumably is mostly ready to go on a Sunday, we had to enquire into the delay. A further 10 minutes past with no forthcoming explanation and had to enquire again. At around 1 hour in to waiting the child’s meal we had ordered came to the table and honestly was not fit for a dog to eat. A meagre piece of lasagna, dry and over done, looking like it was retrieved from the bin. At this point we abandoned the experience all together and had to walk out. I did feel bad for the front of house member of staff who took the brunt of my disgust but unfortunately they were at the front end of a clearly badly ran kitchen system. This experience is not dissimilar to the past 4-5 times we have tried to give this place the benefit of the doubt. If you work hard for your money, do not give it to this establishment as they don’t respect you enough to offer a quality service.

Visited Friday night, service was very friendly and we were seated in the restaurant, all COVID procedures followed. Drinks were served and our food order taken, we had starters and mains, both were excellent, definitely recommend the pie, was homemade and tasted amazing, gravy was really nice too. Ale was really good, well kept and great taste, good range on, I choose a local pale which was really nice. Definitely be recommending this place to friends.

We had an amazing night here at the Hope and Anchor, it was was for a friends birthday. Staff were friendly and very attentive all night, the food was fantastic, I had the chicken burger which was great, lovely toasted bun, crispy chicken, skin on fries and nice bit of coleslaw. Everyone in the group enjoyed there meals too, I definitely got a bit of food envy when the other meals came out. Good COVID procedures in place too, one way system, QR code to log details, Everything was very clean. Will definitely be back soon.

This was our first visit to the town, so we had never been to the Hope. We ordered F&C withe mushy peas and a toasted sandwich with chips the young lady serving us was very pleasant and dealt very well with a customer telling her about his stay in a naturist hotel he had been staying in.Our drinks weren't long in arriving. The toasted sandwich my wife said was fine just one thing on her meal I hope it dose not rain the roof must be short of a slate as her toast came on it My meal was different not what I expected never had chips with the peel still on the peas tasted like crushed marrowfat peas and not the mushy peas I am used to, the fish well it was like fried fish with very thin batter then added. There was nothing wrong with the meal only it wasn't what I am used to I wish the staff all the best and thanks to stall for being so pleasant during our visit

Went for a family meal on Tuesday 11th Aug and previously reserved. On arrival at opening time there was a lot of people waiting which I felt was a good sign. When seated, our order was taken by a very busy but lovely lady who bought us our food and drinks and 5 stars to you. Very warm and friendly. My lady had a salad option, which to be fair she thoroughly enjoyed and her mum a veg option which again she liked although the chips were overcooked ( my lady and I are chefs). Then onto the chicken and bacon burger with chips and coleslaw that I and the lad had...... The bun was hard and the chicken burger nearly cremated. Small jug of chips. They serve the coleslaw in tiny metal buckets, ours at the bottom had rusted and the rust came off on your finger when rubbed. Needless to say I we left that.As I was with an elderly relative I didn’t want to cause a fuss so quietly spoke to the waitress. I tipped her and thanked her for her excellent service but also said that I’d never have sent those burgers out. Charged for all the food. Not returning.

A functional interior which suited me as I had been outdoors and not looking smart. Locals a little frosty on entry and barman brisk. Kitchen staff warm and friendly however, and brought excellent unfussy food to the table. Very good steak and ale pie, with great shortcrust pastry... others please note it is not meant to be crispy!! Plenty of extra gravy to add if desired, very good taste and consistency. All in all was a solid choice though maybe not somewhere for that extra-special occasion.

Visited the Hope and Anchor the other night with a group of friends. The interior felt old and dusty, the food mediocre at best. Had the bacon and cheese burger, the patty was rolled into a ball, tasteless and tough, the burger bun was dry and old, it broke when I picked it up. The chips were probably the nicest bit of the meal. For the price I payed I would’ve accepted something far far nicer. Wouldn’t recommend anyone visit this establishment that’s looking for a nice meal out. Ways to improve would just be more care and attention to the burgers, don’t overcook them or roll them into a meaty ball, and just use fresher nicer buns like a brioche. On a lighter note the young lady that served us was lovely and attentive.

We visited twice during a recent weekend visit to Wirksworth, both visits were great. Good priced food and drink plus good quality. The Fish Finger Sandwich was the best I have ever had. Staff were very friendly and made us feel very welcome. Very relaxed atmosphere for both locals and visitors.

Arrived around 10:45 am on 10/11/24 only to be informed that there was no hot food being served until 11:15 due to a take away order. Others in front of us left and we reluctantly ordered two coffees, a flapjack and a Pork Pie instead of the full cooked breakfasts we’d hoped for. We were charged twice for the Pork Pie, which we pointed out and were subsequently refunded for. We sat at a table that had the previous occupants breakfast plate on it (which was never cleared, considering the waiting on staff weren’t serving any food at the time) and waited for our coffee which did not arrive. We fetched it ourselves from the counter, at which point around 11:05, they started taking breakfast orders again. The place seemed poorly managed and why you’d turn away valued customers for a take away order is beyond me.

Simply the best place for brunch (and any other light meal) in Matlock. We are a party of 8 and they coped admirably, all of the breakfasts coming out at the same time and hot. Reasonable prices and being located in a (long stay) car park helps.

Whilst I cannot fault the quality of the food, the lack of toilet facilities causes me a major problem. Previously when we have visited here we were able to use the toilets belonging to the pub next door. Having mobility problems and on medication , I politely asked if it would be possible to use the staff WC. This was refused and I was told to use the public toilets which were a considerable distance away. It took me a very painful 25 minute walk to go there and back.I am 85 years old, leaning heavily on a walking stick . I feel very disappointed as i have visited this fish shop many times in the past.

Really lovely food, you wouldn't know it from the outside/inside - it's like any other pub but the food was really good. Had the best dessert - rice pudding with apple and nuts - to die for.

Called here this morning before going for a walk round Matlock bath. Lovely quaint little tea shop with welcoming servers. Just had drinks but the menu stated a variety of food and cakes. Great prices also. Would call again as lots of Covid restrictions in place so felt safe.
