Hong Kong City Restaurant in Dumfries & Galloway

We paid £50 for two main dishes and one alcoholic beverage and one tea. The main courses were perhaps reasonably priced if they had included rice. I think that the rice was my biggest annoyance. This restaurant charges £4.80 for a tiny bowl of boiled rice. I had a pot of tea and a chicken curry. My husband had a beef dish and added a side of mushrooms and one beer. Perhaps the cost of living is biting but I felt that £50 was excessive. When I complained about my dish being excessively oily it was taken back to have the oil better mixed in with the food. But even the gravy on John’s mushrooms was oily. Not greatly recommended.

We were staying at Aird Donald campsite and ordered the food by phone and asked for delivery. The food was delivered well within the stated time. It was piping hot, tasty and a generous portion size. First class.

First time at the Hong Kong city restaurant. Fantastic service and quality dishes highly recommended. Soup to start and the spring rolls exceptional .

Visited Wednesday 17th May (closed Monday/Tuesday) to find that it was only open for take-away meals. The restaurant is due to open in July. However, we were invited inside to have a look. Much to our surprise, we were told that we could dine in the restaurant as we had travelled a long way, but I think it had something to do with my charming partner also being from Hong Kong. We had a very enjoyable meal served personally by the proprietors wife and enjoyed talking with her. The food is first class and I have no hesitation in saying that if you like Chinese food and are in Stranraer, then the Hong Kong City Restaurant is a must.

I ordered food close to closing time. The food I got was cold and re heated. When confronting workers about my experience I was given no help or courtesy. Their customer service was severely lacking and they got on the defence rather than being professional about. I wasted £30 on a takeaway that ended up in the bin. I have been multiple times and the food is usually great quality, however, this time the food was nothing to rave about.

Unfortunately due to restrictions we could not sit in and eat like we usually do, so we got a take away. Missed the ambiance of sitting in as it is nice and cosy, but we made do and had the usual good Chinese meal we had come to expect from years ago. Good size portions as well. Looking forward to being able to sit in again.

I have enjoyed meals here many times and never been disappointed. I ordered a takeaway, and paid for delivery to a village 8 miles away. The food hadn’t arrived 90 minutes later so I cancelled the order. They told me they would reimburse and requested my bank details , which I wasn’t happy with, so they got a delivery driver to drop the cash off when passing. Every business makes mistakes. Very few go the extra mile like this one . Well done. I will be back!

Spare ribs, barely any meat but the sauce was good, Way too many onions which makes a star appearance in abundance of every single dish! Dry noodle dish with chicken. Bizarre. I though dry meant NO SAUCE, apparently I am wrong and it is DRY as in, 'uncooked' noodles on top of a gloppy, greasy, flavourless sauce but the few pieces of chicken were tender. More onions. 2 slivers of green pepper and thats about it. Hubs had chinese chicken curry. Was very average, chips were good. Prawn crackers tasted of very old oil. Would NOT eat here again, ever.

From being one of the finest Chinese restaurants in the World a year ago, our experience this time was disappointing with a below par meal. Yes the welcome was good, staff friendly but the food quality poor. It could be a one off, the place is clean but we noticed dramatically reduced portion size too.

Went here last night for the first time and were pleasantly surprised. Its the smallest but busiest chinese i have ever seen but well worth the 30 min wait for our meal. Food was fantastic, we tried the smoked shredded chicken and the 4 meats dish, both were good sized portions and tastied fantastic.Cant recommend this place enough!

Nipped in for family takeaway and was surprised by the amount of people waiting in the small entrance area. Food definitely worth the 30 minutes wait on a Saturday evening.

Came across this place on a trip to Stranraer.I had the chicken satay and fried rice and my son had the chicken fried rice. Both dishes were very tasty.We also had a dessert in the form of a cheesecake and milkshake. All throughout the staff were very friendly and chatty.

We visited this restaurant a few months ago and it was really go so we went back and had another excellent meal. This place is a proper old fashioned Cantonese Restaurant where the food is prepared with fresh flavourful, good quality ingredients and beautifully presented. The decor is old-style Chinese restaurant so it is clear that this place has no pretensions, it is a simple, clean establishment putting out good food and reasonable prices.

Friendly staff, great food competitively priced, well worth a visit. The Crispy Chicken with honey dishes are awesome.

I stopped as I was hungry and had some time to kill. I had an inkling for Chinese food. I opted for the Deep Fried Squid with Chilli and while it was hot and properly cooked, the only chillis appears to be in the sweet chilli sauce. As a main course I tried the deep fried shredded chicken in a honey and chilli sauce. The chicken was hot and cooked, but it was not crispy and it was swimming in sweet chilli sauce. I was hungry and it was edible. Not sure I’d want to go back for another try.

Food always lovely, staff very friendly. Good portions, if you extra ie ginger in dish it's never a problem. Reccomend

A good restaurant in the middle of Stranraer. Well decorated , clean and welcoming and friendly staff. A good menu with plenty of choice and good portions. Good value for money too. Well worth a visit

Disappointed tonight with takeaway service! Ordered a takeaway for delivery. Takeaway arrived by taxi & duly paid for food & taxi fare. Went to dish up food & wrong order delivered! But receipt on bag displayed my order! Then second taxi arrived with ‘another’ order ... which was my original order! Demanded I pay again for my food! Phoned Hong Kong City ... spoke with manager. Tried to explain what had happened ... not very helpful! Rushed me off the phone & told me to leave wrong order for collection & someone would pick up with my refund .... 3 hours later ... phoned again ... advised that restaurant and takeaway was too busy for someone to collect the wrong order & to deliver my refund! Advised I had put the ‘wrong’ delivery in the bin & I’d like my refund by 10pm!!!

A superb meal enjoyed by my wife and I - large, generous portions of top quality Chinese Food. Looking forward to return visit.

We came here for a weekday early evening meal. The food is good. The service is ok. The atmosphere is a bit flat. The prices are just too expensive. We ordered starters, a main each and one portion of rice and one portion of noodles. We only had soft drinks. The final price was as much as we pay in a five star restaurant for a meal with wine.

Best Chinese that we have had in a long time, staff very polite and friendly, decoration very attractive

After a very confusing 15 minutes we managed to order two meals. A mixed satay with noodles for me and a (vegan friendly) chow mien for my daughter. A very quick £15 was spent and we were promptly given our meals.

Salt and pepper chicken wings excellent. Special curry. Prawn curry. What happened to curry sauce. Watery excuse for a curry sauce. Spoilt the meal.No flavour. Maybe the chef was having an off day.

Stopped in for quick unexpected meal to break a journey up, staff very attentive and the place clean, quite a bit of clutter in toilets with chairs etc but they are clean, the food arrived promptly and very good portions, staff checked regularly for drinks and checking all was ok, the lady who I think may be the owner is lovely and makes you most welcome and interacts well with customers, really pleased we stopped .

Extended family (9 of us) staying in Portpatrick, came here because of reviews. Looked good inside but this time only had take away. Service was excellent, the food very good ! More that the nine of us could eat for just over £50 ! Brilliant Thank you.

Restaurant was empty but very busy with take away trade. Meals were hot and nicely presented. Beef in black bean was tasty, sweet and sour chicken balls obviously freshly cooked. The sweet and sour sauce came in a very small dish and was insufficient for the meal so I asked for more. We were provided with a small sauce boat of additional sauce. When the bill arrived we had been charged an additional £2 for the sauce. We have recently moved to the area and investigating local restaurants. There are several Chinese restaurants in the area so we willl see how they compare with this one. They also charge taxi fares for delivery!

2nd time we've eaten here (in 2 years). Visiting the area again.I'm wary of Chinese restaurants in UK ...bit iof a food snob.... This on the other hand is top notch & v.good value. V. friendly owner.

We ate at the restaurant with our two young grandchildren and really enjoyed the dishes we ordered. The sweet and sour chicken was particularly delicious and so we're the chicken spring rolls. We experienced good service in pleasant surroundings. Definitely worth a visit

An extensive menu to say the least, but rather mediocre in flavour. The Cantonese chicken was nicely done, but the four (chicken, prawn, pork and beef) in honey and chilli tasted of four in sickly sweet chilli sauce. The four prawn crackers were lacking in prawn and only came with the chicken fried rice, which was exactly that and nothing else - not even some diced spring onion to spice it up a bit. It was all grand, but weary. TG we weren't a party of six, because the tables were only big enough for four.

Not exactly busy, even on a Thursday night, great choice of food and beverage. Staff are efficient and food was served quickly. Tasty and filling. Interesting take on chicken curry and chicken satay, the chicken was shredded and deep fried. I ordered boiled rice and my husband ordered chips, BIG plate of chips arrived. You can also get take away options. Nice meal to end our holiday, especially after a long drive.

This is definitely the best Chinese restaurant in town a bit more expensive but well worth it the food is cooked fresh not just heat up and always delicious I've never had a bad meal from hear

Went recently and enjoyed a lovely meal with family. The restaurant was lovely inside and the staff attentive and friendly. Their is a good selection of choices on their menu and all at reasonable prices.Our meals were delivered extremely quickly to our table and absolutely delicious. Well worth it and I will definitely going back there.It also does a carry out service.

Went here for friends 50th birthday. There were 14 of us - only booked for 13 but not a problem to set an extra place. Orders taken quickly, food arrived very soon after, piping hot. Portion sizes are large but every dish was excellent. Birthday girl even got a card and present from owner and then a cake was brought out as well (compliments of owner again). Lovely atmosphere, attentive waiters and waitresses but not encroaching. Definitely recommend and will be back.

The food was lovely and they bring you out plate warmers with candles inside. The restaurant is cosy and warm. The staff were friendly and its was just a nice place to eat.

We have been put off in the past by the outside decor, but having crossed the threshold, the difference is staggering. Really nice decor and the food? Huge menu with lots of interesting choices and prices that won't break the bank. We'll definitely be back. PS It opens at 4.30 so is ideal for an early evening meal

My partner fancied a Chinese meal last night but we couldn't be bothered to eat out so ordered a take away from the Hong Kong City Restaurant. Set meal for two £21 sounded good so ordered, drove the 5 miles to collect. Food was ready for collection, so far so good.Got home ate the chicken and noodle soup, was OK although the 'soup' seemed like hot water with a stock cube and a dash of soy sauce.Mains were chicken curry which tasted like Morrisons "chip shop curry sauce" watered down with onion and something resembling chicken.The "Crispy chicken" was anything but, thin strips of chicken in a soggy batter in a glutenous sauce. It was so bad we didn't have more than one mouthful each. The prawn crackers were nice though, I wish I could say some thing more positive about this take away but I can't.I've had some cracking Chinese meals in the past but this one is at the bottom of my list.

I found this little gem on a back street in Stranraer. The food is amazing and varied . The menu caters for everyone and uses symbols to convey what you are eating. The service was excellent. The prices are standard of the area . Have now used it a few times and never been disappointed.

Four of us bowled up on a Wednesday evening at 9pm, which is late for Stranraer restaurants most of which stop taking orders at 830pm. The staff were courteous, friendly and attentive when necessary. The food really was excellent. It all looked and tasted fresh and was delivered hot and with a smile. We will definitely be back next time were passing through Stranraer.

We bought a take away from here and myself and a friend was up sick all night she had told me she was up being sick then I told her next day the same so we came to the conclusion it was from here

After a quick glance of the (takeaway) menu outside we decided to eat in. Although the place was beautifully decorated, etc there was only one other wee group of diners and the price was vastly higher than take-away costs. I guess it's all relevant though as you pay for staff, water rates, lighting, furniture, etc. Food was delicious but stick to take-away

We used the takeaway on a recent long weekend stay and can highly recommend. The sweet and sour chicken was fantastic, the chicken Maryland proclaimed wonderful by my fussy teen and the pancake rolls called ace by my other! The only downside was the pineapple fritters - just not sweet enough batter for my taste buds. On the while though it's good place, fairly long wait but worth it and not too bd a hit in the pocket either!

Lovely staff, clean environment, consistently good food, the carry out service is excellent and reasonably priced, can't fault it.

We came here for a late Sunday dinner. The takeaway business was booming but we were joined in the restaurant by only one couple. The menu is huge but we chose crispy duck for a starter and the crispy honey chilli chicken, beef curry and crispy beef for mains. The food was incredible. We were very happy with super flavoursome meals made with obviously fresh produce. The service was good and the staff were friendly. I certainly recommend Hong Kong City for a tasty Chinese meal!

This is our 3rd visit here , can't fault it on all visits the food has been excellent ( we have had a couple takeaways as well) If I was to pick up on a small point it would be we did wait an tad longer for our main courses whilst others after us got served before us, I can only put it down to the fact that they were regular as spoke as if they were , also I felt that their service had the edge to it seemed to get extras we did not , we were not checked to see if our meal was ok ( which it was) but others were asked . This won't deter me from 5 Star review but these wee things do get noticed .

First time visit as we were on vacation in the area. The food was excellent ! Chicken and Sweetcorn soup the bowl was packed with flavour. Our favourite dish was the chicken with honey and lime, if we lived closer I would be a regular visitor for this dish. Overall well worth a visit excellent food and service, and the restaurant and toilets were spotlessly clean

We first came here five years ago, we returned while in the area getting a ferry to Ireland. The staff here are so polite and friendly. The food is fantastic and would highly recommend it.

Visited Hong Kong City Restaurant tonight and had a lovely meal at a very reasonable price.Staff were very attentive without making a nuisance of themselves.We are in Stranraer for a couple of days and there is every chance we will go back to Hong Kong City Restaurant again tomorrow.Thoroughly recommended.

Without sounding cheesy to say the least, im a well travelled girl and have tried many chineses. I live in Glasgow and tasted many there....but no where compares to Hong Kong. I literally make the 2 hour journey just for the CRISPY CHICKEN HONEY AND CHILLI. I can not rave about it enough even if i had a hi-vis on and glowstick round my neck. Try it and dont look back!!!!

Well, this is a first, where to begin? this place was supposed to be the best in town, I can only assume that the people who told e to go here have never been anywhere else...The service was painfully slow, the tables and chairs are packed in so tightly, that it is difficult to move around, and sadly the food is not at all up to much.

I will not go anywhere else for Chinese food. Always piping hot with lots of flavour. So many dishes to choose from so perfect if your more adventurous. The staff are always friendly and helpful with great service being provided. Can't fault anything.

After arriving late and checking into our hotel this was the only restaurant that we could find open late where we could have a drink and bite to eat. We ordered a couple appetizers as they were going to be closing soon and we didn't want to keep them late after being told that one dish would take to long to prepare. My son had chicken satay which he said was very good and I had the vegetable spring rolls which were okay. They came without any dipping sauce and when we asked for some were told it was an extra charge. Staff were very friendly and polite

Typical "high street" type Chinese restaurant with a somewhat unusual take-way counter in the small foyer. Some difficulty in ordering aperitifs but thatchers just an accent problem trying to wrangle between various dialects. Once done I received what I expected and food was ordered simply using the tried and proven numbering system. Food arrived quickly. It was well presented, hit snd in good quantity. Prices were competitive and so I can say that my review of "above average" is accurate.

Went here for a birthday meal and the food was excellent and the service was AMAZING. Staff found out it was a birthday and went beyond the call of duty and brought out a homemade cake with no extra expense. Highly recommend this restaurant.

Have had carryouts from here a couple of times now, and it is always good quality, and with good portions.The menu give a good amount of choice too.

The portions were generous, the food tasted good, but there was nothing special about it. The interior design is on the cheap side, the music would suit an elevator. So all in all it's your average chinese take-away-but-you-can-also-dine-in. Good enough for a decent meal, but nothing more.

Spent one night in Stranraer - some would say one night too many.Couldn't get into a tasty looking Italian so opted for this place. There was a massive selection on the menu - result - confusion!Opted for set meal for two. Starter was good. Main courses ok - maybe I should have spent more time choosing from the menu.Staff very pleasant - so all in all I don't have aby complaints

We visited this restaurant with our two young daughters on a recent break to the area. We didn't have a table booked but they accommodated us no problem and the lady, perhaps owner, was extremely friendly. The food was absolutely delicious - the best Chinese dish I've tasted. Great portion size and the hostess was happy to let our two young ones share the children's curry as we felt this would be enough for them. A delicious meal in a lovely restaurant.

Visited some friends in Stranraer for the weekend and ordering in from this restaurant became eating out with rave reviews from our local friends.The decor is what everything sit down Chinese restaurant with a take out section is kitted out with but very cute. The staff were incredibly friendly menu extensive and all looked great. We were all starving and the food came so quickly and piping hot!!! I had the crispy chicken with Peking sauce. It was great! Everyone enjoyed their meals and they didn't taste too greasy, salty, sauce laden or poor quality meat tasting. Everyone loves their own local Chinese that no other will compare to. This one came close though. Little local Chinese restaurant a like this that serve take out sometimes get a bit of bad wrap, or judged to be cheap just from the decor - not somewhere to go out for dinner with friends to. This is not one of them and the food really was great! Would definitely come back.

This lettle restaurant is tucked away behind the Chinese take-away and can be easily missed I found by sheer chance, but I am pleased I did the service and the foood are second to none

Had a lovely night out here with my sister and her husband.it was very festively decorated and very welcoming. The food was excellent and the staff could not have been more helpfull and attentive. The owner is a really lovely person,we don't go very often but when we do, she always remembers us and makes us very wellcome!

We went for a chinese when down at a football match. Food was poor and expensive. Wish we had went for some pub grub instead.

This is a very good find, it looks just like a Chinese takeaway but on closer inspection you find a restaurant towards the back. The staff are very friendly and attentive, and very smartly dressed with collar and ties and jackets.The menu is extensive you are spoilt for choice, I was very pleased with my choice and the prices are very resonable

My family - wife, son and myself travelled a round trip of 50 miles for a meal in this restaurant. I had booked our table before we made the journey. When we arrived we were met with very welcoming staff who proceeded to professionally attend to our needs. The atmosphere was warm, relaxing and comfortable. We all had a starter (son - chicken noodle soup. wife - glass of orange juice. myself - hot & sour soup) and each had a sizzling sirloin steak.

Really enjoyed our meal tonight , food was amazing and the staff were so attentive will certainly be going back a must if looking for somewhere to eat in Stranraer

Six of us ate in here and had a mixture of starters and mains. We decided to share the mains and the two staff on were very accommodating in trying to fit everything in, making sure that all the plates of food were kept warm. The staff were very attentive, pouring drinks, making sure we had everything we needed and most importantly sharing a joke or two!Definitely worth a visit, more food than we could eat unfortunately, but it was all very good and cooked to perfection.

Very good well presented tasty food from Hong Kong city restaurant, always ready on time and very friendly service, on Sunday 19th may I phoned in on my way home from work and just asked for them to make me something different, they are very clever by knowing who is calling by storing phone numbers and also must keep an order history as they knew what I had recently , so when I arrived they had made Chicken with asparagus in a sweet chilli and garlic sauce with fried rice, really good surprise and I totally recommend it.

It was really quick, really nice and very tasty! All together I would give it a 5 STAR! It love it i definetly recommend one of the best restaurants in Stranraer and probally in Dumfries and Galloway!

My wife and I went to celebrate our wedding anniversary having been to this restaurant several times.Tonight we had the sizzling fillet of beef which was a bit tough,however the rest of the courses were good. On a down side, the plates were cold, they had not been warmed at all. When we asked for a dessert we were told that it would be be at least 15 minutes. After 5 minutes I spoke to the waiter to cancel the dessert, that got them going and it arrived within a minute.Okay, we would go again, however, it may not now be the first choice of Stranraer restaurants.I thought that the portions were not as large as in previous visits, and the prices are quite high.

In my opinion the food was very good, service was fair, put that down to the nationality difference, on the whole it was good.
