New Oriental in Dumfries & Galloway

Phoned delivery service 1 hour 20 minutes ago and they said they could deliver however they were busy (which was fine, we didn’t mind waiting) the phoned us after waiting 1hour 20 minutes saying too busy to deliver, absolutely shocking could have ordered els where!!!

Good food as normal. Wish they would open again for dine in.

Lots of tables and chairs but can't be called a restaurant. No 'sit in'!

We phoned for a delivery which was quite prompt to nearby holiday lodges. This is where the compliment ends as the food was terrible, sweet & sour cantonese chicken and chicken with green pepper & blackbean sauce was inedible. Chicken in both dishes were clearly reheated to an inch of their lives resulting in the driest chicken I've ever tried to eat, no flavour in either dishes absolutely waste of £32.

Get deliveries from this restaurant once a week, every week and have done for around 2 years! Always lovely service, never had a problem with food ever! We live across town from it and it usually turns up with the friendly delivery driver within half an hour , food is super hot and fresh! We tell anyone who asks to go here for a Chinese takeaway!

Amazing takeaway. Full of flavour and huge portion sizes. Very reasonable dinner with extras for 6 people and delivery less than £90....great value for money. Highly recommended

The crispy chicken in garlic and chilli sauce didn't have a good flavour at all... and the 'crispy' chicken was soggy. The pork foo yung had hard pieces of something like bone in it!? And the rest were fatty chewy pieces. Had a couple of mouthfuls and threw the entire thing away. The woman who served me was lovely but it was a waste of £17, I'm sorry.

We travel up to this area quite regularly and we were looking forward to a nice takeaway following our journey. After a previous positive experience, sadly this was a massive let down. Oily salt and pepper chicken wings and spring rolls with little filling were the starters. A poor Chicken Kung Po main dish and an even worse Beef Pepper and Black Bean dish, where the meat was as tough as leather! An extremely generous 2 stars giving credit for a very pleasant front of house, however your food is now terrible. We will not return.

Bland, Bland, Bland. I ordered black bean sauce. I got Bisto with a few black beans. Lack of seasoning. Veg dish. In dish water. If this is the best then the people of this town need to go south of the border and educate their taste buds!

This is the worst Chinese takeaway we have ever had . Very greasy. Meat was very tuff . Couldn't eat it . It was awful . Won't be back . Plus word of warning guys . When you call in an order the phone is on loud speaker . If you pay by card everyone can hear your bank details . Not good . You could get your bank account hacked if people take mote of your details.

Friendly and quick service. Price reasonable. Currently no eating in, but takeaway and delivery.

Chicken curry with coconut sauce is always my favourite take out. Delicious - you can't beat it.

It was a bit of hit and miss with a few items some lovely and some that could be improved the curry sauce was a the best ever had but salt and chilli chips wasn't what I was expecting usually you get spring onions and chilli but the chips had like a dry seasoning on it don't think I'd return but good option if you want to pay by card for delivery .

It's ok. Most of the Chinese restaurants in Dumfries are pretty poor, but can be very hit or miss. This one is ok, never great, never poor, but ok.

Got a takeaway from New Oriental tonight because my regular place is closed on a Tuesday. First, the order for 4 was to be collected but they misunderstood and delivered it while my daughter was on her way to collect it. We ordered 3 King Prawn dishes and a Special fried Rice. We got 2 King Prawn dishes and an unidentified chicken dish. I did say to my daughter she was probably lucky she did not get the King Prawns as mine were dry/chewy and practically inedible. Unfortunately the chicken dish was no better as the sauce was apparently as disgusting as it looked. As for the Special fried rice, it was no better and seemed to be coated in some kind of tar rather than a sauce. Will not be back!

Fantastic food here beef curry is the best

Having not lived in the area for over 20 years I didn’t know who to order from. So pleased we found this little gem……We ordered a delivery and the food was outstanding and the service was excellent and friendly. Will definitely eat here again when visiting “home” ❤️

We wanted to have a sit down meal but we were told it s take away only. We accepted only coz this place is rated as least worst chinese on TA. We had a sweet and sour chicken (the strips of chicken must have been cooked for over 40 minutes as it was crispy, chunky and horrible) The Mongolian mix was ok but the sauce was quite disgusting. The other chicken dish (don't remember the sauce name) was exactly the same as the sweet n sour. In taste and as disgusting as the other chicken dish. The place inside is dirty, smelly and sticky. Time to invest a few overdue quid. Avoid.

The chicken was obviously a reheat as it was stoting hard . Wouldn't use again not upto the quality myself or family are used to

this has been my chinese restaurant of choice for over 20years, & i have had fantastic meals every single time , & the welcoming staff make this a must go place

I visited last night whilst working in Dumfries. The place is a health warning. Even the light switches were brown with dirt apart from the bit your finger touches. The meal was ready in 2 minutes which isn’t possible for fresh food. It needs reporting to Enviromental health.

Amazing. Would recommend to anyone! I order the crispy shredded beef in honey and garlic sauce with noodles and a side of spare ribs in honey sauce to share and it is spot on every time without fail! They are super quick and the service is always outstanding!

Not only is their crispy shredded beef amazing, I would actually go as far as saying it's the best I've ever had. Do not even bother trying any other Chinese in Dumfries! I have tried most of them and the new oriental wins hands down!! I ordered crispy shredded beef in honey and garlic sauce with noodles and some prawn toast it was absolutely Amazing! I will now be a regular customer here! The staff are friendly too and the place was clean and tidy !Iliterally can not recommended this place enough!!

We discovered this little gem whilst visiting family in Dumfries a couple of years ago. Since that first experience we've had a takeaway from New Oriental on a number of occasions. Each family member has always ordered something different from one another which means there are often a number of different meals to sample. The food is always very well cooked, it's hot and full of flavour. The portion sizes are very good, not so much it goes to waste but just enough if your not quite full enough. One thing that may put you off if your maybe walking past this Chinese is it does look very dated and doesn't appear to of had any refurbishment since the 80's, but please don't let that put you off, the food is wonderful and you won't be disappointed.

Food was average but the service was nice and friendly.

It has been our family restaurant for more than 25 years...we love it! Dennis and polly (the couple who own and run it) are wonderful, will do anything for you ❤ and of course the food is just fantastic ❤👍👅

OMG! This is the worst chinese restaurant food i have ever had? the hot and sour soup to start was uneatable and vile, then after a very long wait for the main courses to arrive, the special fried rice came out with gravy all over it?? which i sent back immediately as i have never had rice with gravy soaked though it? yuk, it came back dry as it should be with what looked like boiled chicken slices on top of it with two large anaemic white frozen looking and completely tasteless prawns , with sweet and sour chicken balls with revolting sauce and soggy batter , again absolutely devoid of any flavour along with the rest, the pancake roll was just full of boiled beansprouts and nothing else? and the salt and pepper prawns again were completely tasteless, and obviously frozen , all in all it was the worst chinese meal and service i have ever had the misfortune of leaving uneaten and paid for! in a tiered and miserable deco and surroundings , please please dont ruin hour evening in going to this place , it is Awful !!

Excellent food and friendly atmosphere. However, was very busy which led to some confusion over orders and a mix up in table priority, to some customers dismay. I enjoyed the extra time to chat with my partner and after my nice meal I left quite satisfied.

We went here whilst having a little break in Dumfries and we were very impressed by the quality and quantity of the food and by all the staff - they were great, so a big thankyou to them. We had a bit of a feast, beginning with two starters (spare ribs and 4 pancake rolls) which were excellent. For the main course I had Mongolian chicken, beef, pork and king prawns and my wife had a Chinese curry (same combination of meats), accompanied by Cantonese stir fried vegetables and two portions of vegetable fried rice. For drinks I had 2 large G+T's and my wife had a large glass of red wine. Everything was excellent and very reasonable at £48, although you can eat very cheaply if that is your choice. This is a great little restaurant and we will certainly return when we are next in the area.

I've been going to the New Oriental for many years. Such lovely owners and nothing too much bother. Went yesterday for a buffet meal with my son and daughter. Delicious as always. Children are made very welcome. I go quite often for their lunchtime menu. Value for money. Best beef curry😀😀

Had better compared with Glasgow street quiet expensive for a carry out

Really don’t understand why some people have slated this place; we decided to go for the menu selection although the buffet was very popular. The Staff were great, very attentive, my partner was on diet and they accommodated to her needs admirably, myself, well I wasn’t on a diet and pigged out; the peking duck was amazing. Having tried a few Chinese meals in my time I would rate this as one of the best. Lovely family atmosphere and I we will be going again when we visit Dumfries.

Great Chinese for sit in, Takeaway or delivery. Staff are very welcoming and try hard to keep you happy. Fairly priced and Hugh quality.

Staff were lovely honestly couldn't fault them. They offered a high chair straight away which was clean and functional and even brought a tea spoon so my little man could have a go feeding himself. Food was hot,fresh and really nice. I will definitely go back.

Upon reading the good reviews, I decided to pop in for some dinner. Upon entering, the restaurant was notably clean and tidy but the decor is outdated.I was seated quickly and upon looking through the menu I opted for the Sweet and Sour Chicken balls with Fried Rice. I was also offered the all you can eat buffet option, but instead just preferred a main course. The food came out in reasonable time and the portion size was just right, but apart from the rice, the rest of the dish was very bland. The sweet and sour sauce had no flavour to it, and the batter on the chicken whilst crispy was flavourless. The young waitress who served me was polite and efficient, but the food wasn't good. I therefore can't recommend this place and won't be returning.

Sorry I can’t rate the food as we didn’t get any. My wife and I went in for a meal about 6pm on a Saturday night prior to going to the theatre which was due to start at 7.30. We were seated quickly and our drinks arrived soon after. Unfortunately that’s when it all went wrong. Twenty minutes after we were seated no one had taken our order. We brought this to the attention of whom we presumed was one of the owners and she said she’d be right back. We never saw her again. A waitress eventually took our order however twenty minutes later we were still waiting on our starters. By this time a couple who had come in about ten minutes after us had actually finished there main course and several carry out customers had been served with their food. Enough was enough and we walked out. Won’t be back.

Thisbuffet never had a lot of choice but the food that was there was amazing ! They had all the best dishes on offer and the staff were very friendly and helpful. The decor is a bit outdated but that should not put you off eating in here !

Have been here a couple of times recently and the food has been very good every time. Especially liked the Singapore vermicelli and vegetable rice noddles. Service and prices are good but restaurant could be warmer.

Visited on a buffet night. We had one buffet and one off the menu. The menu dish was good. The buffet was a let down for the price. Food had been sitting for a while,some trays empty and main dishes not labelled. Overall average

Visited his restaurant tonight, family of 6for my sons birthday. Staff were very welcoming and moved out table at my request - wanted to move further into the restaurant as I was feeling the cold (admittedly it is freezing outside!) wasn’t a bother though. 6 starters - including 4 different soups, prawn toast and chicken spring rolls - all were piping hot and lovely flavours. Main courses - Szechuan combination, szechuan prawn, Kung-po chicken, chicken rainbow sauce and a chow main with black bean sauce all served with rice. Again all dishes were piping hot and full of flavour. Mix of soft and alcoholic drinks and bill came to £100. Lovely meal and very good value. Will definitely be back. restaurant does a buffet night every Friday and Sunday - under £12 per adult....... would definitely be worth a try.

Decided after looking at reviews we would give this a chance. Not had Chinese for some time and now will probably be a lot longer for the next one. I ordered chicken scheczuan style and my husband had chicken and mushroom. The chicken was so tough we couldn’t eat it. What a waste of money. Won’t be doing it again

Fantastic food and really nice, welcoming staff. The buffet is great value and ideal for the kids. Their Salt & Pepper Chicken is delicious. We had a family function there and they were very accommodating. I would highly recommend and will definitely be a returning customer.

Tucked away in a side street but well worth a visit. 4 of us had main meals, drinks and 1 starter and prawn crackers - £50. All food piping hot and served within 10 minutes of ordering. Staff were very friendly and accommodating of fussy eaters! Would definitely recommend this restaurant. I understand they do take away as well but didn't try this.

Fantastic food, great service by the two ladies, food came very quickly and was piping hot. Will definitely be back as can't fault food or service. Will only say that the decor could do with a facelift but that's all I can fault it on.

My brother and I went for a meal on Saturday evening. A warm welcome and our drinks arrived quickly.

As we have just recently moved to Scotland we thought we would explore the area for food.

Title says it all -- what more do you need. Went for end of season party with my darts team and had a large selection of the menu between us. Everyone said they enjoyed their meal and staff were lovely.

I visited on a Friday evening when a buffet was available, so you could help yourself to a wide variety of dishes. The restaurant was comfortable and the service friendly. It is located in the town centre, minutes away from the bus terminus at Whitesands.

Food always good quality and hot on arrival . We tend to have takeaways from here and the Mongolian chicken is superb .

We visited this restaurant on a whim and didn’t know what to expect. The had two choices either menu or buffet - the Buffett seemed to be a popular choice with a lot of people but personally we prefer to eat a little more adventurous.

So me my sister , dad & his girlfriend went to here last night and after wards we felt fine. Until this morning ! We all feel very sick! Maybe it was food poisoning or a mistake, but the buffet was good.

Took my family here during the school holidays. We went on a Sunday night and it was an all you can eat buffet night. There was a great selection, plenty of options for us to choose from, and was a fantastic and friendly service

The staff were so caring that I couldn't not notice it. The food was okay. Very traditional place off the beaten track.

We called in after 6pm on a wet Saturday night and the restaurant was empty. When we placed our order we were told that there was a large order being prepared and we would have to wait 20 minutes for our meal - it arrived 5 minutes later. When my wife asked for a coke she was asked if she wanted a half pint or a pint. The beef curry was fine but there was too little rice for the sauce and meat. The sweet and sour was good. It is the type of chinese where it seems nothing much has changed for many years but none the worse for it.

Takeaway last week £31.80 for 3 meals we waited almost 2.5 hrs for ! Cold on arrival also 😟 called to explain our disappointment and replace an order for them to make good 🤔 unfortunately the restaurant refused to accept the extortionate cost and wait !!! AVOID ☹

No te dejes engañar por las fotos es un restaurante encantador. El personal es fantástico, el servicio fue rápido y lo más importante es que la comida era muy buena. Veníamos de fuera de la zona y no teníamos ni idea de dónde comer siguiendo el consejo asesor de viaje llegamos comimos nos fuimos contentos.

Having read the reviews we were prepared for a good dining experience. Unfortunately the environment within the restaurant was appalling. The wallpaper was peeling off and overall the place was sad and neglected. We ordered wine from the menu. They didn't gave it. The food was passable but not outstanding. Staff were polite and efficient. A shame the place is so worn.
