Amazing takeaway. Full of flavour and huge portion sizes. Very reasonable dinner with extras for 6 people and delivery less than £90....great value for money. Highly recommended

We travel up to this area quite regularly and we were looking forward to a nice takeaway following our journey. After a previous positive experience, sadly this was a massive let down. Oily salt and pepper chicken wings and spring rolls with little filling were the starters. A poor Chicken Kung Po main dish and an even worse Beef Pepper and Black Bean dish, where the meat was as tough as leather! An extremely generous 2 stars giving credit for a very pleasant front of house, however your food is now terrible. We will not return.

Bland, Bland, Bland. I ordered black bean sauce. I got Bisto with a few black beans. Lack of seasoning. Veg dish. In dish water. If this is the best then the people of this town need to go south of the border and educate their taste buds!

It's ok. Most of the Chinese restaurants in Dumfries are pretty poor, but can be very hit or miss. This one is ok, never great, never poor, but ok.

Got a takeaway from New Oriental tonight because my regular place is closed on a Tuesday. First, the order for 4 was to be collected but they misunderstood and delivered it while my daughter was on her way to collect it. We ordered 3 King Prawn dishes and a Special fried Rice. We got 2 King Prawn dishes and an unidentified chicken dish. I did say to my daughter she was probably lucky she did not get the King Prawns as mine were dry/chewy and practically inedible. Unfortunately the chicken dish was no better as the sauce was apparently as disgusting as it looked. As for the Special fried rice, it was no better and seemed to be coated in some kind of tar rather than a sauce. Will not be back!

Having not lived in the area for over 20 years I didn’t know who to order from. So pleased we found this little gem……We ordered a delivery and the food was outstanding and the service was excellent and friendly. Will definitely eat here again when visiting “home” ❤️

We wanted to have a sit down meal but we were told it s take away only. We accepted only coz this place is rated as least worst chinese on TA. We had a sweet and sour chicken (the strips of chicken must have been cooked for over 40 minutes as it was crispy, chunky and horrible) The Mongolian mix was ok but the sauce was quite disgusting. The other chicken dish (don't remember the sauce name) was exactly the same as the sweet n sour. In taste and as disgusting as the other chicken dish. The place inside is dirty, smelly and sticky. Time to invest a few overdue quid. Avoid.

For 18 years we have had so many lovely meals here with family and friends and also takeaways . Pauly and Christine and their families are so so lovely and we continue to support them during this pandemic . The G Family Xx

I visited last night whilst working in Dumfries. The place is a health warning. Even the light switches were brown with dirt apart from the bit your finger touches. The meal was ready in 2 minutes which isn’t possible for fresh food. It needs reporting to Enviromental health.

Just wow. I moved to Dumfries a year ago and have been desperately trying to find a decent Chinese that can cook crispy shredded beef the correct way! After a year of disappointment receiving soggy battered slimy 'crispy' shredded beef from various Chinese takeaways in Dumfries and just as I was beginning to accept the fact that I would just have to make the 200 mile round trip back home to collect my favourite dish, I found the new oriental! Not only is their crispy shredded beef amazing, I would actually go as far as saying it's the best I've ever had. Do not even bother trying any other Chinese in Dumfries! I have tried most of them and the new oriental wins hands down!! I ordered crispy shredded beef in honey and garlic sauce with noodles and some prawn toast it was absolutely Amazing! I will now be a regular customer here! The staff are friendly too and the place was clean and tidy! I literally can not recommended this place enough!

We discovered this little gem whilst visiting family in Dumfries a couple of years ago. Since that first experience we've had a takeaway from New Oriental on a number of occasions. Each family member has always ordered something different from one another which means there are often a number of different meals to sample. The food is always very well cooked, it's hot and full of flavour. The portion sizes are very good, not so much it goes to waste but just enough if your not quite full enough. One thing that may put you off if your maybe walking past this Chinese is it does look very dated and doesn't appear to of had any refurbishment since the 80's, but please don't let that put you off, the food is wonderful and you won't be disappointed.

OMG! This is the worst chinese restaurant food i have ever had? the hot and sour soup to start was uneatable and vile, then after a very long wait for the main courses to arrive, the special fried rice came out with gravy all over it?? which i sent back immediately as i have never had rice with gravy soaked though it? yuk, it came back dry as it should be with what looked like boiled chicken slices on top of it with two large anaemic white frozen looking and completely tasteless prawns , with sweet and sour chicken balls with revolting sauce and soggy batter , again absolutely devoid of any flavour along with the rest, the pancake roll was just full of boiled beansprouts and nothing else? and the salt and pepper prawns again were completely tasteless, and obviously frozen , all in all it was the worst chinese meal and service i have ever had the misfortune of leaving uneaten and paid for! in a tiered and miserable deco and surroundings , please please dont ruin hour evening in going to this place , it is Awful !!

We went here whilst having a little break in Dumfries and we were very impressed by the quality and quantity of the food and by all the staff - they were great, so a big thankyou to them. We had a bit of a feast, beginning with two starters (spare ribs and 4 pancake rolls) which were excellent. For the main course I had Mongolian chicken, beef, pork and king prawns and my wife had a Chinese curry (same combination of meats), accompanied by Cantonese stir fried vegetables and two portions of vegetable fried rice. For drinks I had 2 large G+T's and my wife had a large glass of red wine. Everything was excellent and very reasonable at £48, although you can eat very cheaply if that is your choice. This is a great little restaurant and we will certainly return when we are next in the area.

I've been going to the New Oriental for many years. Such lovely owners and nothing too much bother. Went yesterday for a buffet meal with my son and daughter. Delicious as always. Children are made very welcome. I go quite often for their lunchtime menu. Value for money. Best beef curry😀😀

Really don’t understand why some people have slated this place; we decided to go for the menu selection although the buffet was very popular. The Staff were great, very attentive, my partner was on diet and they accommodated to her needs admirably, myself, well I wasn’t on a diet and pigged out; the peking duck was amazing. Having tried a few Chinese meals in my time I would rate this as one of the best. Lovely family atmosphere and I we will be going again when we visit Dumfries.

Upon reading the good reviews, I decided to pop in for some dinner. Upon entering, the restaurant was notably clean and tidy but the decor is outdated.I was seated quickly and upon looking through the menu I opted for the Sweet and Sour Chicken balls with Fried Rice. I was also offered the all you can eat buffet option, but instead just preferred a main course. The food came out in reasonable time and the portion size was just right, but apart from the rice, the rest of the dish was very bland. The sweet and sour sauce had no flavour to it, and the batter on the chicken whilst crispy was flavourless. The young waitress who served me was polite and efficient, but the food wasn't good. I therefore can't recommend this place and won't be returning.

Sorry I can’t rate the food as we didn’t get any. My wife and I went in for a meal about 6pm on a Saturday night prior to going to the theatre which was due to start at 7.30. We were seated quickly and our drinks arrived soon after. Unfortunately that’s when it all went wrong. Twenty minutes after we were seated no one had taken our order. We brought this to the attention of whom we presumed was one of the owners and she said she’d be right back. We never saw her again. A waitress eventually took our order however twenty minutes later we were still waiting on our starters. By this time a couple who had come in about ten minutes after us had actually finished there main course and several carry out customers had been served with their food. Enough was enough and we walked out. Won’t be back.

Thisbuffet never had a lot of choice but the food that was there was amazing ! They had all the best dishes on offer and the staff were very friendly and helpful. The decor is a bit outdated but that should not put you off eating in here !

Have been here a couple of times recently and the food has been very good every time. Especially liked the Singapore vermicelli and vegetable rice noddles. Service and prices are good but restaurant could be warmer.

Visited on a buffet night. We had one buffet and one off the menu. The menu dish was good. The buffet was a let down for the price. Food had been sitting for a while,some trays empty and main dishes not labelled. Overall average

Visited his restaurant tonight, family of 6for my sons birthday. Staff were very welcoming and moved out table at my request - wanted to move further into the restaurant as I was feeling the cold (admittedly it is freezing outside!) wasn’t a bother though. 6 starters - including 4 different soups, prawn toast and chicken spring rolls - all were piping hot and lovely flavours. Main courses - Szechuan combination, szechuan prawn, Kung-po chicken, chicken rainbow sauce and a chow main with black bean sauce all served with rice. Again all dishes were piping hot and full of flavour. Mix of soft and alcoholic drinks and bill came to £100. Lovely meal and very good value. Will definitely be back. restaurant does a buffet night every Friday and Sunday - under £12 per adult....... would definitely be worth a try.

Decided after looking at reviews we would give this a chance. Not had Chinese for some time and now will probably be a lot longer for the next one. I ordered chicken scheczuan style and my husband had chicken and mushroom. The chicken was so tough we couldn’t eat it. What a waste of money. Won’t be doing it again

Tucked away in a side street but well worth a visit. 4 of us had main meals, drinks and 1 starter and prawn crackers - £50. All food piping hot and served within 10 minutes of ordering. Staff were very friendly and accommodating of fussy eaters! Would definitely recommend this restaurant. I understand they do take away as well but didn't try this.

Title says it all -- what more do you need. Went for end of season party with my darts team and had a large selection of the menu between us. Everyone said they enjoyed their meal and staff were lovely.

A group of 10 arrived at this restaurant after our previous booking at another restaurant fell through. The buffet is excellent value, the selection is great and food is always hot and fresh.

I visited on a Friday evening when a buffet was available, so you could help yourself to a wide variety of dishes. The restaurant was comfortable and the service friendly. It is located in the town centre, minutes away from the bus terminus at Whitesands.

Food always good quality and hot on arrival . We tend to have takeaways from here and the Mongolian chicken is superb .

We visited this restaurant on a whim and didn’t know what to expect. The had two choices either menu or buffet - the Buffett seemed to be a popular choice with a lot of people but personally we prefer to eat a little more adventurous.

Wouldn't use anybody else for take-away chinese food. Meals always arrived on time and still hot even though we stay a little out of town. Great tasting dish's and never really had a bad meal

Took my family here during the school holidays. We went on a Sunday night and it was an all you can eat buffet night. There was a great selection, plenty of options for us to choose from, and was a fantastic and friendly service

The staff were so caring that I couldn't not notice it. The food was okay. Very traditional place off the beaten track.

We called in after 6pm on a wet Saturday night and the restaurant was empty. When we placed our order we were told that there was a large order being prepared and we would have to wait 20 minutes for our meal - it arrived 5 minutes later. When my wife asked for a coke she was asked if she wanted a half pint or a pint. The beef curry was fine but there was too little rice for the sauce and meat. The sweet and sour was good. It is the type of chinese where it seems nothing much has changed for many years but none the worse for it.

No te dejes engañar por las fotos es un restaurante encantador. El personal es fantástico, el servicio fue rápido y lo más importante es que la comida era muy buena. Veníamos de fuera de la zona y no teníamos ni idea de dónde comer siguiendo el consejo asesor de viaje llegamos comimos nos fuimos contentos.

We have visited on many occasions for either buffet or from the menu. The buffet is excellent as is the service, I am also very welcome with my Guide Dog Puppy who is in training which is a big plus from myself and family. The chicken toast is excellent my granddaughter aged three and a half years loves this! From the menu I can highly recommend the crispy combination in Mongolian sauce is brilliant, my husband usually goes for any of the duck dishes which are also excellent. And I think my 2 older children aged 19 and 21 have tried most things and they enjoyed everything they have eaten. The service is very good, as they always know what drinks we require and when our granddaughter is needing her ice cream!! Lovely place and we have enjoyed every visit. Well done to the New Oriental.

Don't let the dated look of the interior put you off. They also have a take away menu running side by side with the restaurant.We had a warm welcome for my family of 5 with pre teens on board. Very patient with us while we were choosing and mixing up the meal so everything came as a main (including the soup and the duck)We all had some great menu items arriving full of flavour, heat and the house specials are well worth a try if you are not sure. We had a mix of Mongolian, chow mein, Foo yung and vegetarian dishes to share as a family and were absolutely satisfied.The Chinese tea to finish off was tasty and plentiful

On a recent visit to Dumfries we saw that the New Oriental has a buffet evening. The food was limited and some of the options had been left standing for some time. Not an experience we would wish to repeat.

always does what it says on the tin..no frills, no surprises. Scottish Chinese ..just what you would expect. very pleasant staff .

After reading the reviews, we came here & had the lunchtime set menu. It was a little awkward as it was only us in the place where the staff were just pacing the room! We had the set menu - 3 courses for £6.50. My partner wanted two starters & a main instead of a puffing but was told rudely "no?!?! The decor was drab and needs updating. The food was ok but nothing special and just worth the £6! Wouldn't come here again.

This has probably the best chef in any Chinese restaurant in Scotland and I have visited many Portion sizes on takeaway meals as in the dinner for two are enough for even the hungriest person

I have just placed an order. I have received a confirmation on email with delivery time max 45 min... I was waiting 1 hour 40 min! and then I called them. Unfortunately they forgot about my order and asked me to wait another 40 minutes... Of course I said NO! Never again.

We got delivery from here as out usual was closed,food arrived well presented and hot. We all enjoyed it and will order again soom

We ordered from here in Feb 2016 and the food portions are a good size,all good arrived hot and we'll presented, me and my children all loved the food and will order again soon.

We were staying in Dumfries for the night and my husband and 7 year old fancied a chinese. The restaurant we were looking for was actually closed so we stumbled across the New Oriental by chance. We checked out the menu outside and it looked very varied, the only thing that put us off was the tired and shabby interior.We decided to give it a try and we were greeted by a lovely waiter who showed us to our table and took a drinks order.We placed our order a mixture of spring roll and chicken and sweetcorn soup for starter followed by sweet and sour chicken, steak cantonese and beef with ginger and spring onion all with egg fried rice.All dishes were well presented and tasty although my husband felt his steak cantonese could have been cooked a little longer.Overall opinion is if you are looking for tasty chinese food at good prices and aren't bothered about tired and dated decor give it a try.

On visiting family we always use this takeaway until last night,ordered to collect ,the lady was very busy on her own but when my food was placed at the end of the bar I madeg the attempt to pay,she then answered the phone for a delivery,very confused phone call,I walked up to the bar ,young guy asked is this yours l replied I don t know made another attempt to pay the lady then took another phone call. When I finally paid got home the meal was cold. Never again.

Was visiting the local area and fancied Chinese takeaway. Having driven around Dumfries finding several closed ones our SatNav found this gem! Portions are large and come with rice or chips (we didn't read the menu properly and ordered extra rice, although the lady serving us did tell us they came with rice so we could have changed our order!!) appeared to be cooked to order rather than re-heated. Friendly staff who went out of there way to advise and help us. If we find ourselves in Dumfries again we'll certainly visit here again.

Been here several years ago and hoped it hadnt changed too much. Luckily, it hadnt. Friendly staff, clean and comfortable tables. The menu was excellent, and reasonably priced. When we asked for gluten free, the chef took the time and trouble to visit our table personally to advise us of our options. From the minute we went in staff were smiling and asking if everything was ok. Last night we had been to a Indian buffet and were unsure of going for another buffet as it wasn't very good. Glad we did! Food excellent and plenty of it. Really good value for money as well❗️♥️P.s best pint of Tennants since we got to Dumfries

We found this gem by accident and are so pleased that we did (we had been looking for the wetherspoons) I have severe food allergies (Alliums) so eating out is always a problem as they are used in so many things. We were seated immediately and the staff could not of been more helpful. After spending some minuets pondering what I was able to eat the son of the owner approached me asking if he could assist he then spent so time talking to me about what I could and could not eat and what sort of things I liked, he disappeared into the kitchen and returned shortly with some suggestions' of what they could cook for me. I was delighted at the options so they then proceeded to bring me 3 dishes especially cooked for me telling me if I wanted any more of the same or anything different to just ask and they would be happy to help. they made me a Chicken & Prawn Egg Foo Yung, a Plain Chow Mein & and a dish called Rainbow Chicken the food was amazing, tasty and hot (and so much of it!!). £10.20 for all you could Eat Buffet and food made especially for me I could ask for no more it was excellent value for money and there was a good selection of deserts that they brought to your table, we will be returning in late August with friends even though it will be a 100+ mile round trip from were we are going to be working but for this kind of service its well worth it. All the staff were polite knowledgeable and very accommodating. They have even given me an email address and phone number saying if we give them a call they will make sure there are dishes that I can eat if this is not outstanding customer service I don't know what is!!! just wished it was nearer to home.

Visited this place for the first time yesturday with a friend and my 3year old son, the decor is very poor and dated looking . really could do with a touch up but the staff where lovely and very cheery they interacted with my son alot which i thought was welcoming as most places arent too keen on young children being in there premises so was unsure how theyd be giving it was our first visit , there was just us and one other couple which i found odd specially as it was a tuesday and most chineses are shut tuesdays, anyway i had the "chicken" curry tasted ok but the curry sauce didnt taste like it was from a chinese and that out a packet or jar, the onions where raw so i left them the chicken seemed a bit undercooked and didnt taste like chicken and ever since having this meal i have had severe stomach pain which has never happend before after a chinese so will most probably avoid in future ,

I was in this restaurant with a large party.We sat in the restaurant and pondered what we would all like to eat when the owner (Polly) asked if we would like to have the chef just bring us a selection of dishes. we all agreed and several large platters of various Chinese dishes arrived. It was really good and a great idea. Washed down with Tiger beer it was a great experience.

I have visited the place a number of times and the food is amazing! The decor is a little shabby and it is always very cold in the building but the food makes the trip worth it! It's a shame not many people have heard of it because it is great food!

Looking for a Chinese Restaurant in Dumfries……we stumbled across the New Oriental. With only two people dining when we entered and the place looking a bit tatty. We were a bit dubious in eating there.But what a surprise. The waitress was very welcoming and helpful. Plus the food was great.My friend had two courses for £10 which he really enjoyed. Me, being greedy guts had Special Chow Mein and Crispy Chilli Beef which was wonderful and far too much food for my stomach!So I definitely recommend The New Oriental.Only complaint would be the £4.50(ish) for a bottle of Bud when I can buy 15 bottles (300ml) for £10 at Tesco's.

Checked the Tripadvisor reviews before choosing the New Oriental. Staying at the Cairndale which about 10 minutes walk away. I had booked as it was a Saturday. Didn't need to do this as the restaurant was less than half full.We had a very friendly welcome. We were shown to our table. My wife did feel a bit cold. It was a cold evening & I don't think that anyone thought to turn up the heating.For starters I had the chilli ribs. They were brilliant. My wife had the wanton soup which she loved. For the mains we had a prawn & chicken dish with fried rice & noodles. Both were excellent.We could not fault nthe food or the service. However, the interior could do with an overall.

Enjoyed this chinese for a few years for take aways . Have been in twice for sit down meals and it was fab. Couldn't fault it one bit

Was a quiet cold night we went in and given a heater. The staff were very helpful and friendly the food was very good and the whole meal was thoroughly enjoyable.

I dined here with a friend whilst touring Scotland, fairly basic decour but very nice food, beer and very friendly staff, very good price, theres not many places to eat out at Dumfries we walked around the whole town and chose here!! you cant ask for anything else, great food highly reccomended!

The Welcome is warm2. The place is clean3. The Staff are friendly, especially the owner Polly who is really friendly and will endeavour to make your meal enjoyable4. Kneehow! (Good spelling). Been going here for last 20 years! Lunch outings, carry out.Good value and welcome always a smile.They can do Banquets to your tastes and cost. Great for group of up to 20 workmates family or any group. The layout gives an almost private alcove at back.Say" Bill from carers sent me" it won't get you a discount, just a look of pity!

went into this restraunt about 10 min past 2oclock it looked as though the waitress was closing but she no problem table for 2 me and a very good friend we had the buisness lunch and a nice bottle of wine the food was hot and served on hot plates which is a pet hate of mine hot fodd on cold plates a big no non will def go back to this restraunt

tried this wee restaurant out, not expecting much, and were we surprised !! it was very quiet , but the phone starting ringing off the hook for take aways . People were also coming in to collect. It wasn't a fancy place but the menu choice was fantastic and the staff were so polite and helpful. The food was really nice and the portion size wasn't bad at all. we will definately eat here again or indeed get a take away to our hotel room . Only comment I could make was that it was a bit cold in spite of the fact that our table was next to a radiator . Didn't detract too much from our lovely meal

My wife, son, grandson and myself went into The New Oriental Restaurant for a business lunch. Apart from us there were only one other couple having lunch.The decor of the establishment was bright and had a typical Chinese theme. It was a wee bit cold and could have done with some heating on. The gents toilet while clean was a we bit small only allowing one person at a time to use it, and then, for a gent with a bit of a stomach it was difficult to enter.I would not claim that the food was good or bad other than to say it what you would expect for the price of £5-90p per head for a three course meal.The service was quick and efficient and the staff were friendly but I do not think I would go out of the way to eat there again, however if I happen to be in a close proximity I would consider it.

We ate at the New Oriental on a lunch time when they do a 3 course for £5.95 (in Sept 2013) there was a very good choice of all three courses. The food was served quickly and was hot and very tasty. The service was excellant they went out of their way to be helpful and altered what was on offer to cover my Wheat/Gluten free needs.

Back to this little restaurant for lunch Three courses for £5.95 which is very good and we didn't expect a lot but the portions were extremely small I would have been happier to pay a little extra and get a proper sized plate However very tasty

Probably the best Chinese restaurant anywhere in the world. The chef is a masterchef and is very creative. Take my family there when we want a special meal and the service and food is second to none, prices are very reasonable and the banquet served up a mixture of 8 different starters and 9 different mains for our table of 9 to share and would have easily fed 15. Best ribs I have ever had.

Looked for a Chinese restaurant nearby after watching a strongman competition in leisure centre New Oriental was first we found Small very basic restaurant with no frills but extremely pleasant and helpful staff The prices were very good The dishes were very plain but very good Next time I am in Dumfries I will definitely return to this restaurant

went into the above for lunch service very good food was nice and hot and to get a hot plate for the main course well it speaks for it self will go back next time i am in town and will tell other poele to go there

Frstly,as always this is solely my experience and totally honest.I was away on business and had one meal here.The meal of wonton soup as a starter was good ...no problems.I had the sizzling satay meat and fried rice and it was very nice.I had ice cream for dessert ...the ice rcream could have been nicer and was slighlty crystalised ...so it wasnt as nice as it should be.My main complaint is that it was freezing inside the restaurant and I thought the place looked tired and needs to be redecorated.They had a oil radiator placed on the floor for heating and I was seated next to a radiator but still wasnt warm ..this is definetely something that needs urgent attention ...Decor unsatisfactory ....waitress service was smashing ....Hope this helps.

We had a delicious take-away from here on Christmas Eve, which came on generous portions - more than we could eat. All the food was very tasty and the service friendly. Will go back again and would recommend.

Eight of us ate here last week. We pre-ordered a large amount of food. Squid stuffed with prawns, chicken wings (boned out) stuffed with meat, soft-shell crabs, fried won ton, chicken with chestnuts (one of my favourites from Hong Kong), twice cooked pork, fisherman's basket (potato straws shaped into a basket with scallops, prawns etc.), Dover Sole with the meat cooked two ways and the remainder of the fish cooked so all could be eated. We ground to a halt here and went home with four containers per couple.Talk to Dennis and Paulie to have your favourite foods cooked so you can spend (which we did) four hours eating slowly. The Cantonese always say at the beginning of a meal eat slowly. Do not be shy, always ask for advice and have a new experience.
