Honeymoon Chinese Restaurant in North Devon

No wonder the place is so dead for a Friday night, even the phones for takeaway were quiet. looked online and found this place, drove 20 mins away for it, only to find the menu was a lot higher than online prices, wouldn’t mind paying this if the food was nice and portions reasonable. Was charged for prawn crackers when the bill was £90+ what happened to free prawn crackers, we paid £8 for 3 ribs disgusting and wasn’t even that nice, the chicken balls weren’t that nice, the rest was okay but portions not great for the price, when we mentioned the stuff we were unhappy about the woman was super argumentative about trying to justify it. And the bill come and the prices were higher than was the as on the menu agajn. Drinks were advertised as a coke but was given Pepsi, only a small thing but it’s a big difference, just advertise what you have

We always visit this restaurant when working in Barnstaple. The staff are lovely and so welcoming, and the Chinese Food is brilliant, we really enjoy it. As a personal preference I would like to see vegetarian dishes on the menu, so we can try something new. Apart from that, brilliant job, keep it up.

Been having takeaway from honeymoon for years. These last two months I had two takeaways first one, most of the food wasn’t properly cooked had raw bits. And the second takeaway everything tasted awful sauce tasted too sweet, the meat tasted old and rubbery. Its a shame used to be great takeaway with good prices and lovely food. 👎👎👎

This food was actually a delivered takeaway not sit in. We normally love the food from Honeymoon but last night received food that was not up to usual standards. I think they may have a new chef. I contacted the restaurant (never had to do this in the past) to provide feedback & was expecting some kind of discount on the next order or replacement food. The customer service isn’t even handled by the restaurant but an outside agency. Albeit very nice words no refund/discount has been offered to a very loyal customer. I feel saddened and let down as this feedback probably doesn’t even make it to the restaurant. Just wanted to let others know that the food was disappointing and the service afterwards was even more of a letdown. Spend your money wisely. 😢

Absolutely delighted with my experience at the Chinese restaurant! The food was superbly delicious, each dish bursting with flavor. The service was exceptionally friendly, and they took the time to provide detailed information about allergies, ensuring a worry-free dining experience. Our favorite was the soup—simply divine. Highly recommend this place for a delightful culinary journey!

65mins late with my delivery last time it was 45 mins late then turned up cold

Business Trip down and felt peckish for chinese in the area. Was recommended this family restaurant out of a few others and can say it did meet the expectations. The sweet and sour and satay sauce are very good compared to other chinese sauces I've had. The chicken balls and crispy beef are very well covered and fried but did order during non-busy hours which kept the food non-soggy and fresh. Can definitely recommend but avoid rush-hours so long delivery doesn't sog the food.

The food in this place is just great - always! They are very busy with take aways and deliveries and you can see why when you try the food. The atmosphere can sometimes be a little poor when there are not many people dining but the service is great. The wine is good but very little choice if by the glass. However, we will return.

Lovely food! We were looking to get a bit of chinese and thai which the restaurant hit the nail over. The Pad Thai and the sweet and sour chicken balls were amazing, especially satay chicken. The price was a bit up on the higher side due to inflation but for what was spent the taste has been a-lot better than the few chinese i've had around across towns and cities.

We visited this Chinese whilst on holiday and although the food was very good, it was very over priced for the portion sizes. It is very dated inside also. The lady that served is was very nice.

They advertise buffet. Yet after we sat down, they informed us that was yrs ago. They are misinforming people to get them into their restaurant, they should change their advert.

This is one of my all-time favourite Chinese restaurants! The food is always absolutely amazing, and of great quality, and it never takes long for the food after being ordered. There is a wide range of dishes to choose from and a selection of vegetarian or vegetable dishes. The staff are always lovely and willing to help! We also often order takeaways which are always of a high standard - never cold despite having to travel a while to deliver to us. The quality is absolutely worth the money and even tastes great if there are leftovers to be reheated the next day! Would 100% recommend it!

We ordered for 7:30 we were given our food 7:45 ish, the staff were nice however I wish I could say the same about the food. It had no flavour, the prawn toast was like biting into oil soaked bread, the beef was slimey and the sweet and sour sauce was not sweet nor sour. I was really looking forward to this after reading reviews but was left disappointed and £40 (for two people) down.

Food was overpriced, microwave sauces. Service was slow. I had the sizling steak which was in just sugar sauce. Partner had the green Thai in cooked in pot. This also turned up not cooked in pot and can make better at home. Would not recommend overpriced rubbish.

A quarter of a container with about 8 pieces of meat in it I got sent and they said sorry but prices have gone up and if we give you anymore we won’t make any money. Also forgot my can of coke with the delivery and went and got it for me but a business with good customer service would have at the very least gave a extra free can of coke but nothing, so I had no drink with my Chinese until after. Food was ok otherwise but won’t go back with this experience

Absolutely shocking service tonight, placed an order to be delivered which when it turned up our salt and pepper chicken was salt and pepper chips, phoned the restaurant and the lady who took the order answered basically blaming us saying we ordered salt and pepper chips not chicken! I can’t understand there could be a mix up as they sound similar ! she said she went over the order and we agreed it was correct .. no we didn’t, to be blamed for us making the order wrong to be told then if we want chicken we would need to pay the difference and give the chips back which was over priced! Always order from here and won’t be again after that shamble of a service tonight and rude customer service. Most restaurants would of dealt with that a lot differently, stress free, apologised and not blame!

Took a chance on this restaurant as a bit of a laugh since we were passing by actually on our honeymoon. What a surprise. Very friendly staff and delicious food.

Took the whole family there on 5th February for my 65th birthday. The menu, was very extensive, with lots to choose from. Booked early evening as we had young children with us. The service was very poor and took ages to even order a drink to start. Starters were ok but took ages to arrive, and when they did, were at most very average, with some being quite poorly executed. The main courses took so long to be served and were really disabpointed by the quality of the food. They seem to pay more attention to the takeaway services, which seemed very busy. The restaurant itself is not the most pleasing place to eat. And even young children said the food was not as nice as other places they have been to.! Will not be going back again.

Had a takeaway dinner, all hot and tasty. Good sauce on dishes, and not too sweet like some other Chinese restaurants. We had sweet and sour chicken and plum sauce duck. Glad I chose Honeymoon for my takeaway treat.

I phoned happy they deliver to my area but for a price came with in a hour. Positive Pancake roll was yummy and hot tasted great not oily you get 2. Negative Chips came cold and dry. Mixed meat and veg stirfry was hot but the sauce it came in tasted horribleand ruined it all. Boiled rice came cold tasteless and sticky. Prawn crackers was oily and didn't taste nice. Bbq ribs came hot but they were really hard and chewy sauce was nice. Plain noodles are the worst I've had they were cold too salty and way to thick and tasted like Ash. I'm sorry to say I spent £35 and it all went into the bin except the pancake rolls as they were the only thing that I could eat. Just a waste of money. This is what I experienced with this meal I brought to the best of my knowledge.

We visited this restaurant during our stay in Barnstaple and found the food to be very, very good. The four of us shared a banquet set meal and found the service to be very friendly and quick. At the present time there is scaffolding around the building due to external renovations but don’t be put off by this, as the restaurant inside is very nice and spacious. Will definitely visit again.

First and last visit kung po chicken was awful the chicken was very poor quality and a sauce that lacked flavor apart from sliced red chilli for the heat which should come from good ingredients and experience.

Nice Chinese restuarant with traditional decor. Food: really nice food. We had a good mix of dishes and all were tasty. If being critical, the duck (with pancakes) could have been meatier as was a lot of crisp! But overall it was nice. Price: middle priced in comparison too others. What I would expect to pay. Atmosphere: we went on a Sunday evening (2 adults and 2 children) and it was quiet. The decor is traditional and nice. The staff well friendly and attentive. Overall I would recommend this reatuarant and would go again.

Only a 20 minute drive from Woolacombe. Beautiful fresh tasty food and friendly welcoming staff. Not very inviting from the outside but a hidden gem. Will definitely return when we are on holiday again.

Good quality food for the price (also very good) The sweet and sour chicken and pork were a tad sweet but still very enjoyable the Chow Mein was also a good selection both beef and pork overall very impressed by the service and definitely recommend

Great on takeaway. We are never disappointed. Dinned in once for a all you could eat but wasn't great, there wasn't a lot at the time to choose from and the place needed a good clean (which I think they have done now)

We Placed an order last night for a takeaway & to have it delivered. It was a saturday night, we know they are always busy.. We were Very Impressed, The food was fantastic,The service on the phone was Great. The delivery was Mega Fast, Very polite at the door. Very pleased! This has definitely became a favourite place of ours to eat.

Visited with colleagues whilst on business. Mid week buffet was excellent standard and value. Table service, great quality food excellent service. We have revisited now on several occassions and are never disappointed. Lady owner who is front of house is superb.

Update to review (previous was from 2 years ago) The food is still amazing but the restaurant is a lot quieter nowadays and the bathroom today was absolutely disgusting, urine everywhere, the pull cord was grimy and theres water damage in the ceiling and down the wall with the mirror covered in condensation, it desperately needs some tlc. price has gone up to £9.50 for the lunch time buffet. I’ll still go back but have dropped a star from my previous review. previous review: I regularly visit this restaurant for the buffet menu. The food is always top quality, there is a good selection of food including all of my favourite dishes and some vegetarian options. The staff are friendly and I have a pleasant dining experience each time I go there. The buffet is all you can eat and is very good value at Under £8 (last time I went... two weeks ago) I always recommend this place to friends and take as many people here as I can. Parking is close by and it is at a great location, right next to the high street and also the pretty pedestrian area by the estuary and museum.

Amazing evening at Honeymoon restaurant. Food was excellent and well cooked with large portions. We had the all you can eat buffet menu which you could pick as many items you wanted from the set menu, although food was brought in stages to ensure this wasn’t a problem. Although there was a notice on the menu to say if you don’t eat all the food you would have to pay extra, but this wasn’t an issue for us. Our waitress was lovely and was able to explain the menu in detail. The restaurant wasn’t busy whilst we were there although this made the evening even more enjoyable. The toilets were clean and tidy but a bit old in style.

Wanted to go somewhere with an all you can eat menu so thought this place would be ideal as I’m only in town for the week working so got on the blower to book a table for me and my imaginary friend only to be told it’s a menu for 2 or more ppl I have never known anything like it money is obviously not the same colour up north as it is down here so I will go elsewhere and see if they want it 👎👎

Visited this restaurant with family. Family run business that provides not only fantastic food but service is second to none. Would highly recommend this place.

Not enough choice on the ALL U CAN EAT. Needs improvement.

We went here last Saturday after deciding that the 'other' Chinese restaurant that everyone goes on about, is precocious and expensive. Honeymoon turned out to be just an 8 minute walk from the station and the staff were delightful. The food was very good and you can expect to get all the dishes us Westerners are familiar with at a high standard. Nothing spectacularly unusual but if you want a really good Chinese Meal, you'll find it here at a reasonable price. NB: They also have Buffets available (see photos of the A Board)

Best Chinese restaurant around! We often get take away from here and no where else! Very tasty, great portions, good price and very quick at cooking. Everything tastes fresh and fragrant every time!

I only use Honeymoon as a last ditch takeaway. Food is OK but uninspiring usual run of the mill Chinese takeaway. On the whole quite greasy, rice usually dry. Its great if you want a late night takeaway when taste doesn't matter. Wouldn't go there for a meal as restaurant is soulless. The staff are friendly and helpful but overall its overpriced for mediocre food. Unfortunately the other Chinese restaurants in town offer nothing better either. I would recommend Honeymoon if all you want is fastf tasteless food

Reasonable priced, reasonable quality - get what you pay for

First off Trip Advisor it’s called the ‘Honey Moon’ restaurant, not the ‘Honeymoon’On arrival I noticed the ‘M’ was missing so it spells Honey oon, not good for a first impression.So hard to write a detrimental review when the staff are so nice however the food at this restaurant was very disappointing.There was far too much food colouring and gluten added to the dishes which made the colouring the same and the taste was virtually non-existent. Crispy seaweed which was cold and not sweetened enough. The barbecue spare ribs were lacking any meat and devoid of any taste with a glutinous red disgusting sauce.The pancake rolls were mediocre, I couldn’t confirm if freshly prepared or frozen but they were pretty bland. The crispy aromatic duck wasn’t at crispy, it wasn’t shredded at the table as seems to be the custom but was chopped in the kitchen with the cleaver prior to being served, it was cold, dry and bland. We sent the duck back, at this point I’d almost lost the will to live having been in the restaurant for over two hours, and decided to cancel the main course based on the previous dishes. We certainly wouldn’t go back, the Chinese manageress was very apologetic and a very nice person, she apologised and said they were three staff missing and they actually had delivery drivers acting as waiters and waitresses!

Evening buffet meals was good value for money and very tasty. The toilet facilities could seriously do with some attention.

Few of us from work fancied a spontaneous mid week night out! So we popped in here for some food and a couple of drinks. Despite the restaurant being fairly quiet, the food was still very fresh and we were all saying how nice every bit if food was! Worked out less that £20 each, baring in mind we are like kings and had drinks! Seen a lot of negative reviews on here, but I have to say on this occasion, we were either very lucky, or this is genuinely a very good Chinese restaurant! Anyway, we’ll definitely be coming back again hoping for the same tasty food and quick service!

Called at lunchtime for their buffet lunch . Eat as much as you like for £8.50 ! Appetisers , soup , rice , noodles and numerous main dishes . Good vegey selection for those who want it . Lovely service from Annie , the owner . Highly recommended.

I have eaten in here twice and I’ve been disappointed both times, I like the idea of the buffet meals but what is on offer is terrible no where near enough choices.

We visited this restaurant earlier this month for dinner. We did not make a reservation and just turned up at 8pm on a Saturday evening and the place was almost empty and to be honest, I am not surprised. The restaurant itself is very dated and the hosting was almost hostile, but as we were hungry, we decided to let this go. We ordered starters & main courses and were very disappointed with both the food and the presentation. I don't know if the server couldn't speak English or was just having a bad day but she was almost mute when taking our orders and when she served them. The food had no real flavour and was almost bland. The bill came to £55 for both of us including 1 wine and 1 beer. When it came to paying, the server wasn't anywhere to be found and so I left the money on the bar. It is very rare that I don't tip, but on this occasion I really wasn't going to leave one as the service was poor and we didn't really enjoy the food. We will never be visiting this place again.

Not a bad place to have lunch. Had to go look for someone to get a table. The food was average. Not much choice. And what there was there wasn't a lot of. The woman who worked there instead if trying to make herself look busy sat and starred at us eat out lunch. A little strange to say the least.

My advice would be to check the menu before agreeing to eat there, food was very tasty the only comment i have is the buffet isn't as large as you would find at buffet City at Exeter. Felt there wasn't a great of food left on the buffet 3/4 of an hour before the end of the lunch time service. I don't think we would be willing to return there again.

Lovely lunchtime buffet. Good selection. Annie was lovely with my elderly mum. Decor a bit dated but who cares when the food is good. Mum wants to go back again so she must have been impressed.

Don't be put off by the outside appearance of this little restaurant. The sign is half missing and it looks dark and does not look inviting. However when inside there is a warm welcome, varied buffet of nicely cooked food and extremely reasonably priced.

Visiting Barnstaple for the day and dropped in for buffet lunch. We weren't sure that it was open and had to shout hello but we were then served quickly and shown were the buffet was. Not too much selection but what there was went down very well - fresh, hot and tasty. My son lives nearby and will definately go again.

This was our first visit to The Honeymoon Chinese Restaurant,we didn't have the highest expectations,some reviews were not particularly good.We really enjoyed our meal, delicious ribs & spring rolls.The service was friendly & efficient.We will look forward to our next visit.

Outstanding food, freshly prepared and delivered. This is our Chinese of choice for take away in Barnstaple. The Thai Duck is outstanding and great Pancake Rolls too. Restaurant is very outdated for decor so choose this restaurant for take away only.

I have used honeymoon for 8 years and have Chinese take out every couple of months.

Very good lunch time menu have not been there in the evening very friendly staff lots of choice to eat great value for the money.

Friday visits to Barnstaple would not be the same without a visit to the Honey Moon

Our reason fro visiting was due to Trip Advisor reviews. The venue is not as big as we expected but the quality of the food was good and hot, but limited compared to other similar venues we have visited. Price wise it was okay but there is no child discount. Service here is quick. However when my young daughter asked me why there were no chips the lady at the till did talk over me to advise (loudly) that it was a Chinese and chips are not offered. This was rude and therefore I offered no tip when paying. They need to understand that children will always ask obvious questions and allow for that. Other than that I would recommend a visit based on the quality of the food.

Went with a friend. We picked lots of dishes to share. Portions were generous and all delicious. Reasonable priced and friendly service. Would def go again.

Arrived just after opening and was so pleased to find the buffet food lovely and hot, elsewhere usually buffet food is cold. Not a vast selection but a reasonable choice well prepared. Only complaint from my husband was that there were no prawn dishes. A very polite lady welcomed us. Overall good service.

Me and my sister Inlaw with our 2 newborn baby's in prams, came in to have buffet lunch and was greeted with a filthy look and told we was not aloud our new born baby's in at 12.45 in the afternoon! Possibly the rudest and nastiest thing I've ever experienced!

I visited this restaurant last Thursday night with a workmate, greeted by a friendly smile and shown to our table.we decided to have the eat as much as you like buffet chose the mixed starter platter for two, very nice prawn toast,spare ribs satay chicken and spring rolls, lovely!! Then we had chicken and vegetable soup. Then mains beef ho fun, King prawns with ginger, house special fried rice and Singapore fried rice, with a portion of fried onions. OMG!!! Reasonably priced for the quality of food. A return visit we think!!
