I often meet friends for coffee in the Fat Hippo cafe and we always have a great experience. The staff are friendly and accommodating, the coffee is always delicious and the cakes too. I love that there is also a fruit and healthy snack option. Always a treat to go there. Thank you to the staff 🤩

The 20 minute wait was not worth it, the soup was thin and watery, the sandwich was just two slices of bread and coronation chicken from a catering tub. No presentation. Never eat here again.

I’ve always enjoyed coming to the garden centre and was recommended to try their restaurant, as even though I visit occasionally, I’ve never eaten there. However, after having the all day breakfast, I was then violently ill throughout the afternoon and evening, due to food poisoning, I will spare you the details but it was not pleasant. I was taken to hospital due to being dehydrated, which caused my body to go into shock and I was unable to regain consciousness. Whether or not it was from the food or caused by cross contamination, but I had not eaten or drank from anywhere else all day, so I can confirm, whatever caused me to be so ill was from the restaurant. I understand they were busy and we waited around 45 minutes for our food, but that is no excuse to produce contaminated or uncooked food. I will not be returning.

Met with friends but arrived early. Found a table covered in dirty dishes and had to clear that myself and got dirty looks from one of the waitresses. Once friend arrived we ordered. I ordered quiche and chips, I didn’t want salad. For the quiche and salad it was £9.95 in my view already extortionate. Now for that price you would expect chips to be added but no, I was charged £9.95 plus £3.99 for additional salad and a coffee the grand total £17.75 !!!! So I complained. A good decent restaurant would reimburse the £3.99 and add the chips for nothing. That’s good customer service. No, no, no they charged me for the chips and reimbursed me £1.50 . The meal arrived so not worth £16.25 I spent on this. The chips were greasy and cheap quality. I had a salad I didn’t want and the quiche was all that great either it was more egg and pasty that cheese and onion! . The customer service was not acceptable and not friendly and accommodating as you would expect. I can promise you I will NOT be coming here again! If I could rate a zero I would have! There are much better places to enjoy a lunch date with friends.

The all day breakfast was totally delicious. Not the biggest but very tasty and not small either. High quality, great service and certainly worth another visit. Other options on the menu looked equally delicious from nearby tables. The range of cakes was amazing and we'll need several visits just to try our favourites. Outside seating for those of us with dogs and a brilliant play area for kids

It is many (and I mean many!) years since I ordered something online and, because of my order, received a voucher for two Cream Teas at this Homeleigh Garden Centre. My wife and I lived in Scotland at the time and, shortly afterwards, moved to France where we lived for 11 years. Visits to Cornwall were not on the agenda, but I put the printed-off voucher into the glove box of our car and, each time we changed the car, the voucher came with us. You see, I had noticed that there was no "Expiry date" on the voucher, and thought that, one day, we might be able to visit. We returned to Scotland in January and, wishing to visit friends who live near to Bristol, decided to travel onto Cornwall for a week - and to visit Launceston! We entered the restaurant, and I approached a young man at the counter, informing him that we were there to test the validity of their offers!!! Sam looked puzzled, so I handed him the voucher, pointing out the lack of an expiry date, and asking him if we were still entitled to our free Cream Teas. I was actually surprised when he told me that we were so entitled! He invited us to sit down at a table and, having checked if we wished to have plain, or fruit, scones, informed us that we would be served shortly. My wife asked if she might have coffee instead of tea, and was assured that this would not be a problem. We had our Cream Teas served very quickly and, trust me, they were deeelicious! They were also very filling! Thank you, Sam, for your warm welcome and excellent service. At our ages, it is unlikely that we shall return to Cornwall but, if we do, we shall certainly visit Homeleigh where we will hope top see you again (and we'll happily pay for our Cream Teas!).

The very friendly and accomodating staff in Robin's Nest are the stars of the show at this little restaurant. We took our aging parents and had a delightful lunch experience in the bright and airy conservatory end, though apparently a traditional roast is a seasonal dish here, and so was not available. A choice of delicious cakes made for a nice dessert.

They just seem to have everything here! My favourite time to visit is around Christmas time, they have singing/dancing mechanical Santa’s in a tunnel-like walk way, which always put a smile on my face. They also have mechanical polar bears, penguins, deer, and a talking Santa above the stairway in the main store! It’s so magical at Christmas time, especially for children. The food in the upstairs restaurant has far more options than the one in the downstairs one. However, dogs aren’t allowed in the upstairs one, I believe…

Very nice cafe and store but very disappointed to see the pet section - rabbits are supposed to be in pairs. There was one solitary male rabbit on his own and also the runs are far too small for them and the poor parrot continues to look sad and depressed without a lot of stimulation there I think the pet section needs removing, or at least greatly revamping, I have reported it to the RSPCA for them to look into. very disappointing

Just felt I should leave some feedback here as some of the previous reviews were a little off from my experience today. I have just been into The Fat Hippo cafe for a coffee (Coconut Latte). Very quiet early in the morning but staff were extremely attentive and ready to go. Placed my order and payed at the till but unlike the suggestions from other reviews, I did not need to wait at the desk to take my drink away it was brought to my table of choice by a very friendly member of the service team. The coffee was superb (served in a clean mug too..) Overall a really great little spot to stop for a coffee.

This is the last time I set foot in this place. There are to many dogs, barking in the cafe when you try to have a coffee in peace. Dogs crapping on the carpet and cocking their legs over the goods. There are children crawling around in this dirty environment. I tried the crediton shop and its the same there. Disgusting. This is a real health concern, there is ample room for dogs to stay outside. The last straw was staff giving out dog biscuits at the till, slobbering all over their hands and then serve other customers without washing their hands!!

We frequently visit homeleigh as we live locally. My 3 year old was in the soft play area which we were monitoring him closely to make sure he was safe. I became concerned when 2 older boys probably around 15-17 years old went in the soft play and were sat under the slides talking to the very young children. I asked staff to help and they just stared at my blankly. I decided to ask the older boys to leave soft play as it was very inappropriate for them to be in there as there were several very young children in there. I felt no support from the staff and the area was totally unmonitored, even other parents don't bother checking their children in there and are oblivious. Nobody will keep your child safe but you, please keep a close eye on your children in there. Abuse can happen anywhere please beware!!!

Food and drinks order taken quickly and you pay at that point. Food came out super quick as I guess apart from the eggs it’s all pre cooked. Generally because of this the food was average. A bit dry and tough but for a big ish place I kind of get it. Staff were super friendly and accommodating, place was warm and clean. Would give it another try to be fair.

Waited 20 mins for my lunch. I finally gave up (I was on the clock and needed to get back to work) and stood to go and ask for a refund it finally, and slowly strolled out of the kitchen and arrived at my table. I mentioned I wasn’t told it was going to be 20 minutes and got the response (as she turned away) well, it’s here now. And after all that it was unseasoned and bland. On the plus side it was hot and fresh. I don’t mind waiting but for 20mins you should let people know when they order. On this occasion I would have chosen something else so I could enjoy my lunch without having to inhale it. It’s not the first time service has been a bit sharp here, I won’t be returning.

The price for this was £17.35 When questioned because I thought I'd paid for 4 at that price I was told they did it with tea as a deal so we paid extra for the "hot" chocolate. We are regular customers to all other departments including, hairdressers & deli shop but will not frequent any of them again due to this one bad experience ...get your prices reasonable and your customer service sorted. Homeleigh Garden centre is a lovely please to visit. The shops and cafe are really great. However the pet section is absolutely shocking, there are various types of hamsters in extremely unsuitable houses, budgies crowded in small enclosures and bunnies and guinea pigs in enclosures not suited to their needs. There are two parrots (not for sale) who reside at the garden centre without proper nourishment or interaction, both look extremely unhappy and in need of stimulation. I was very very shocked to see this here and would hope it is something that will be changed asap!!

Been in to garden centre many times for many years I’m also a carer so bring my clients regularly. But tonight at 440pm the older lady on the till was so rude. I had a spine operation so can’t carry heavy stuff so went to till and asked for a luxury bird seed , and some coal .and could someone bring it to the pick up point ? I had forgot the name of the coal .There are only 3 types I knew the price but this was met with such nastiness and rudeness!! Looked like she wanted to go home coat on ready . Huffed and snapped at me all the time with me apologising . Then said didn’t have any for that price . But I pointed to it !! . Then announced she would get ME a trolley so I can get it ! I explained again I couldn’t carry it ! So she huffed and said I suppose I’ll have to get it ?? The owner at this time heard her say this and told her to radio through and get blokes to get it . She did so only asking for bird seed , I said don’t forget coal and she turned shouted that she would tell him that when he came in ??? This was enough for me I went outside myself and asked a lovely gentleman to do it for me , which he did with no hesitation. I have never been spoken to like this and don’t intend to be again disappointing customer service. Thank goodness I wasn’t with my elderly clients would of been so upset .

Had an OK if a bit expensive afternoon meal with the kids after a country walk. Waitress was very attentive. The kids loved the playground. It was all going well until, upon leaving, we've overheard a member of staff say: "Look at the mess they made!" referring to the mud from the boots no doubt. It's a garden centre, not a Ritz, if you cannot handle a bit of mud, install boot scrapers at the door. Having worked in hospitality myself I would have found a bit of mud a non-issue (if mildly irritating before closing) easily resolved with a pan and a brush. Happy enough to take your money though, muddy boots didn't seem to be a problem at the point of payment. Will come again to Homeleigh, just not the cafe. Just feel like we are too "uncouth" for this "esteemed" establishment.

The ladies in the cafe were very friendly and seemed happy to be there though. The service was pleasantly quick and the cafe was clean. Overall, we felt very safe dining there, even if it wasn’t excellent value. I always pop in here for my pet supplies but have found recently that the shelves are always bare of what I need. The ladies on the department are usually really helpful but I haven’t seen anyone to help me in a while now. The staff in the fish shop are always rude and don’t seem to know what they’re talking about apart from one young gentleman and the tanks have definitely looked better. I won’t be getting my fish from them anymore as I’m tired of being spoken to like I’m an inconvenience to the ladies in there. Impressive Garden Centre, vast! But we only went for the cafeteria, which was also lovely and very pleasant seating area outside. (although wet on this occasion). Good social distancing, one way in, one way out, masks worn by staff, customers spaced out. Contact details requested. Can't comment on food as we didn't have any, but it looked good. I did notice that some parents seemed to think it was okay to let their kids run around on their own while they enjoyed a sit down and a chat. Never seen that before in a garden centre.

Friendly and helpful service done with a smile. In my opinion it is very different in the last couple of years.and it's all for the better. The food is tasty, wholesome and appeals to my palette. It is presented well, the desserts always look delicious. The main meals are of a good portion. Nothing is too much bother for them either as when my family and I visit, we nearly always have add-ons to the same type of meal or we swap items within the meal such as vegetables for different ones that are not on the menu. I would recommend for all types of taste buds and budgets. Their prices are good too. Thank you Robin's restaurant x

Whenever we go to Homeleigh Garden Centre we try to go late morning so we can take advantage of their fabulous breakfasts that are actually served all day. All their food is good, but the breakfasts are far and away wonderful. Definitely recommend both Robin's Nest restaurant for meals and the coffee shop for snacks.

First food here since reopening after lockdown. Not much has changed, it's not special but still good. Great views from the terrace and some outside seats are sheltered from the rain if the weather is not great. Service good, food good, choice good, prices reasonable.

Holmleigh is such a lovely Garden Centre, both the cafe and restaurant are good, the view from the cafe is lovely. There’s a good selection of plants and also a wide variety of other things, the staff are super friendly and it’s a pleasure to visit. Watch out for the roaming sheep and dog when in the car!

Stopped off for lunch on the way home following a short break knowing we'd get a nice lunch. We weren't disappointed, excellent food only a short wait and comfortable surroundings, happy to recommend this place. The pets area is well worth a look too.

We visited the pets section and where very upset to see the lovely Macaws in very small cages. The biggest bird called Peckham looked really unhappy, he went to have a go at us as we got near to speak to him. We also noticed that he was plucking out his breast feathers. Last year when we visited he looked so much better. I don’t think a garden centre is a suitable place with all the people for these birds. They need to be in a much larger aviary. Don’t think I’ve ever seen a bird looking so depressed. He did not lift his head at all. The rest of the garden centre is great, they have so much stock. I reckon you could buy everything you needed. Good at Homeleigh is great quality and at a good price. Please Homeleigh, think again about the welfare of your birds.

I was shocked and upset to see the pet section here the hamsters in tiny spaces with no enrichment at all there are two parrots both look very sad these aren’t for sale just have a miserable life in the shop. The budgies are in overcrowded cages. I’m very disappointed in Homleigh. The garden centre is great but Pet section is not good.

Great garden centre, so much to offer here and its lovely to look around. Been to the aquatics a few times and it looks great in there so much variety of fish, tanks plants etc, however the staff I'm not too sure on. I bought some plants from there for my fish tank and a week later it was crawling with snails, I then went back and bought some fish (after I had chased down a member of staff that looked like they didn't want to deal with customers) and they didn't ask me anything about my tank, the size of it or the fish I already have, nothing. Then decided I wanted to look at the ornaments and the lady at the counter said that it was fine. Came back and theres not a single member of staff in the building. 5 minutes later 2 of them come in through the front door looking sheepish (probably went for a fag) and served me. Then got home to find that 1 out of the 6 fish I bought was a completely different fish to the rest when I asked for 6 of the same, so the she didn't check what fish she had put in the bag.

I have visited here on a handful of occasions (because I enjoy the garden centre) and am always remembered why I am not fond of the cafe. It looks inviting and cosy, the decor is nice, but the service is ALWAYS slow. The staff are never overly enthusiastic about what they do. You are told to wait for your hot drinks at the counter with milkshakes being brought to the table when ready...the amount of time my boyfriend was waiting for his hot chocolate (the only customer), my milkshake was ready already. I have managed a cafe before and have never seen staff so unenthusiastic across the board at this one. The exception being 1 young girl who I’ve only seen once.

We stopped for lunch here on our way to Tavistock. I ordered (from a surly lady behind the till) a Latte and Cappuccino. When they arrived you could not tell the difference - both were just milky coffees. When my husband's egg and chips arrived, one of the eggs was cooked perfectly. The other was the first "hard boiled" fried egg I had ever seen. I am sure for the cake and tea people this place is perfect but for something different (are egg and chips different?) then avoid.

Pooped in for light lunch. Was over charged and had to highlight this to cashier. our hot beverage was Stone cold by the time the meal arrived more than 30 minutes late. Part of the order was missing and one of the meals was fridge cold in the centre and was returned. No apologies and clearly just scrapped off the plate, popped back into the microwave and scrapped back on. The three meals and three light snacks came to £32. The cafe was not busy, so no excuse. There are nicer places to visit for lunch in the area so my recommendation would be AVOID!!!

Lovey garden centre. Lots of parking, and a nice outdoor gardening section with the friendliest staff around. The garden centre is great, plants arranged in convenient sections and they looked so healthy. Indoors there is a large selection of gardening items, tools etc, and a fantastic pet section. Robins eatery is fantastic, good food and nice staff, and if you have small children, a play area at the cafe. It is only let down by the range of fashion clothing downstairs (why???) and the badly placed coffee bar next to some rather whiffy toilets. Other than that, a great place to shop and to visit.

Checked opening hours online and it said that it was open until 8:30pm on a Saturday. Arrived just after 7:30pm to be told that there was no fish left, no sausages left, nothing and that they had ran out! Either this is a sign that they had an unexpected rush or their ordering process is poor! We had some chips instead. They seemed ok. Would suggest they need to reduce their opening hours if they don’t have enough stock to supply what they advertise.
