Fab going back tomorrow myself and my father enjoyed thoroughly having tried other fish n chips facilities

Went past this place on Saturday night nobody to been seen. Entire town was busy with restaurants packed. Sunday was the same. Shame this chip shop looks like it has closed it doors. Another reason I’m convinced it has permanently shut is the fish fryer vacancy that has been in the window since June of last year. Hope they find a buyer for this place.

Visited with a few friends for a sit in meal. The guy that showed us to the table and served us was brilliant. He had great customer service skills and also good banter. The food was great and the price was great too.

We had lunch here yesterday, two fish suppers, and the whole experience was excellent. Very welcoming staff who chatted with us, plenty of space in the restaurant area behind the main counter and very fast service. The fish and chips were cooked to perfection, I think the batter was the lightest and crispiest I have ever had and the chips were proper "chippy" chips. The secret is that they use beef dripping to cook everything which makes it lighter and crisper and the food doesn't soak up the fat the way it does when cooked in oil. Absolutely delicious, good value for money with decent sized portions and I will never go anywhere else in Perth.

A once great feature of the Perth chip shop scene and famed across Scotland. But now - popped in for a simple portion of chips. Girl behind counter seemed surprised by a simple request so after rating it, she shouted an order up the shop to be asked about the fish supper ! There was then a discussion about whether there was any in - no idea if it was fish ( not requested ) or chips ( vaguely hoped for ). At this point I scored and headed for another old chip shop which I knew could handle a simple order and had a pretty good chance of having chips available .

Been closed for 10 months but found it open today (Jan 2022). Treated ourselves to a large fish tea with bread butter or roll including coffee.£9.25 Fresh cooked very tasty accompanying salad had a nice oil. Only negative is the dining area is really a room with no views but the food makes up for that. Felt the 2 men serving and cooking had a pride in the preparation of the fish supper.

This is quite simply the best chippy around. Yes, you do have to wait because they cook your meal to order, even the chips but you get the freshest food. I have read reviews that criticise the portion size but they are plenty big enough for me so I don't know what was expected. Excellent food and excellent value.

Located in Perth, south street. Clean, following Covid rules. Order, pay, wait outside for order to be cooked. In short adequate but lacking volume (Not filling for a hungry man!) Spicey Haggis supper ordered £5.40. What I received were two battered Haggis about the size and girth of a link sausage. They were not spicey at all. Batter was okay. Chips, cooked well but inadequate portion. Potatoes are not expensive, especially when bought in volume at wholesale prices. Advice...A little mean!....another potato or two chipped would have ensured my return but I should NOT still be hungry after purchasing a supper....it is supposed to be a meal NOT a snack.

Had fish and chips from here on the 1st March and the fish was awful. There were two small bits of fish in a single fish order. We also shared one portion of chips. The first piece of fish I ate was tasteless and very, very greasy! I gave my husband the second piece of my fish which he said was a bit greasy but not too bad. The chips looked like refries and lots of black/green ones in them. My husband said when he was watching them dish the food up the scoop they used for the chips was filthy. Wish he had told me that before I ate any. My husband had an upset stomach in the night which makes me wonder how frsh their fish is. Won't be back.

Worst fish and chips ever. Greasy fish, overcooked chips. I sat in to eat. No one asked how it was. Even when I was paying I wasn’t asked how it was. He probably knew it was rank. This place used to be great. Looks like the don’t give a .... Avoid.

Been into holdgates multiple times. Each time has been very different services. The food has always been good quality but the service is another story. None were terrible but compared to each other, my first service was the best, we got to pick our own table and the food was served really quick. The second time we had to wait a while but the lady said sorry. The third time was slightly uncomfortable, the young waiter seemed awkward approaching our table. With that all being said all waiters seem like they are really friendly. For a quick meal which is fairly cheap i'd say go for holdgates, although it can sometimes be quiet which makes it awkward.

This used to be the best chip shop in Perth but when I bought a steak pie supper on my last visit, the pie was quite dry but was reasonable. The chips were terrible all little bits and very dry. It was only 4-30 late afternoon so no excuse that it was the end of the day.

Was at yarnfest and we were tired & hungry. The restaurant is at the back past the chain but they were lovely & their prices were good. The food also was great & great service by the staff. This is a place to get proper fish & chips if you be just visiting! One to put on your list!

Stopped in here for a bag of chips after long day walking around Perth, staying at the Salutation so just up the road, although loads on the menu decided just wanted chips, they were well tasty!! Being able to get scraps too, even better. Will sit in next time and try the fish. A proper fush and chip shop!

I can only echo other customers experience of small portions when eating in and prices are not very competitive too! I've eaten in at many such establishments and this one didn't live up to my expectations! The saving grace was the service and quality of food.

Anoche había pescado y papas fritas en Holdgates, el pescado estaba lleno de grasa, la mezcla era muy blanda y me dieron dos MUY pequeñas piezas de abadejo, más pequeñas que nunca antes. Una pieza de tamaño decente, cocinada adecuadamente y dejada escurrir durante un par de minutos hubiera sido mucho mejor. No pude comerlo y me ha quitado las ganas de volver.

Siempre espero una cena de pudin haggis cuando vengo a Escocia y he tenido una mezcla de experiencias, pero este es sin duda uno de los mejores. Gran pudín no demasiado batido y excelentes patatas fritas. Definitivamente recomendaría este lugar ojalá viviera más cerca

The chicken nuggets here are fantastic. The batter the chicken nuggets were in was so light and crispy and overall they were very well cooked. I will be back.

Stopped here on the way north from Glasgow and yet again was so pleased we did.

Popped in as a spur of the moment visit on route from north to south. Glad we did! The cafe was spotless if a little dated, service was polite and attentive if a tad slow. The food however out weights all of that. Tasty, fresh and a real treat for anyone after a great fish supper. Can't argue with the price. Worth the visit!

Used to use Holdgates years ago when Fred Hillis owned it and they were a fantastic Fish & Chip venue. Returned back to Perth at the weekend and had a sit-in fish supper in there wee tea room. Cooked fresh, fish was fantastic, chips were great. All in all a good pit stop.

Loved this place sit down chippy tea fantastic......restaurants in Perth are limited and I would recommend this place highly.

Never been disappointed yet! After an horrendous non meal at Wetherspoons, I was starving and came here to get the usual small fish supper! Absolutely delicious. I love the crunchy chips and was so fresh! Now give me a free meal please. Seriously though, great fish and chips!

We usually just turn up and order which is normally a bit of a lengthy wait as they pride themselves on freshly preparing each order. To be fair, the quality of the food has always been quite good.

Popped in here for a quick bite before a concert and it was absolutely delicious.Freshly made and the great think is they did small fish suppers as well as normal size which is superb All round excellent service & value for money...highly recommend

Attended holdgates chippy today for take away. Again with dog on lead stood at threshold to shout order and was told to come in and that as long as dog was on lead and under control there was no issue. Thanks holdgate. Wish certain other chip shops in Perth had the same sensible attitude. So me and my four legged friend will be taking our business to hold gates from now on.

Often frequent Holdgates and is a great treat! Cooked to perfection never too greasy! Lovely to sit in at the chippy great good old fish n chips! Keep it up!

Great little fish bar in the centre of Perth, really reasonably priced food and drink and nice friendly staff. Banana milkshake is a must try!

This was our first visit and have to say the food far exceeded our expectations. Only fresh local fish is used and there is also a great selection of food on the menu. There is a little sit down area at the back of the shop with no frills but very clean. Staff are very friendly along with their speedy service. I would say this is a great place to go for a bite to eat and good value for money if you don't want to go into a restaurant. We will definitely go back for more of this tasty food.

Great quality freshly cooked fish supper at a cracking price. I went fairly late and they were happy to cook fresh and I didn’t have to wait long. Great service and I’d definitely go back

Been a regular here for a while and the food is always of a good standard. The restaurant area is a bit small but not cramped.

Went here for sit down fish and chips and it was 'ok' a cheap eat and no more. This could be so much better.... Service was slowish but not awful to take the order and slowish not awful to arrive. Fish is fairly thin strips...

As the restaurant closes early, we decided to go for tea before the cinema. It was very busy, but we were seated almost immediately. It took the waitress some time to take our order, but the food arrived very quickly after that. Perfectly cooked haddock in beautiful crispy batter, excellent crispy outside, soft inside, chips.Beware, though, they no longer accept payment by card.

Been going here everytime we visit perth.The quality is always the same high standard...The fish supper.. black pudding supper is the best ive ever eaten..there was one miserable member off waitress staff who just grunted ... but the quality of the food is the best...

We had been to the cinema and had half an hour to wait for our bus at the stop opposite Holdgates. I went across for some chips and got them straight from the fryer. Possibly the best chips ever! Golden crispy outside, fluffy inside, and just the right amount of salt. It is a while since we have eaten in Holdgates, but it won't be long before we are back for a sit-down meal!

Went to Holdgates Chipper for tea,was taken to a table by a very nice staff member who plcked a suitable table as my husband is disabled,we ordered fish and chips they were very nice and hot.A very nice place to eat.

I went to have lunch last week to Holdgates, It was nobody in the seating area and I was on my own. I requested to seat on a larger table as the restaurant was completly empty!!!! I wasnt allowed when still nobody sitting there. The fish and chips was horrible, cold chips, cold fish. Dirty cutlery, dirty table, very dirty toilets. On top of that when I when to pay and requested a detailed receipt the waitress just gave me a receipt with the total amount so I coulnd see how much I was paying for every item. NOT RECOMMENDED. VERY RUDE STAFF, HORRIBLE SERVICE, HORRIBLE FOOD.

Best gf fish supper by far, pity it's not on a more regular basis tho. And the tatie fritters are the best....

Whilst looking for somewhere to eat for lunch me and my sister decided to try holdgates, at first we weren't sure if you could even sit In as the seating area was up the back, we waited to be seated and got seated, personally I would prefer to pick my own seat. We ordered our food and the staff seemed pretty friendly. It came out fairly quick and tasted really nice, we ordered a meal and a can of juice each, overall the price came to around £14, which is cheap for a fish supper, chicken nugget supper and two cans of irn bru. I couldn't fault anything with the meal, it tasted nice, it was cheap and the seating area was nice and quiet, there wasn't anything special about the meal but there wasn't anything bad about it. I definitely recommend.

This was our first visit to Holdgates chipper we went through the back for the sit in i had fish and chips with bread and butter well there was a whole fish and a half my husband had cheese burger and chips well they were fantastic food was piping hot the batter on the fish was first class. Highly recommened. Cant wait for our next visit

Visited the establishment a couple of times whilst in Perth recently.The food was freshly prepared - a sign asks for patience BECAUSE it's being freshly cooked. The resulting food was worth waiting for.My partner hadn't had a proper white pudding supper for many years and what she got at Holdgates didn't disappoint. Fresh, tasty & delicious. The chips were freshy-fried, too.I had a mince (Scotch) pie and it was far better than the ones you get down South from places like Morrisons.The place was clean and the staff were friendly - not much more you can ask from a traditional chip shop.If you're in Perth and want something unpretentious to eat, give here a try. :)

On a freezing night in Perth, the best thing to get you back in the mood for more whisky is the Holdgates fish supper in a box. Three pieces of haddock in a gloriously crispy batter served with steaming-hot fresh chips. Perfection. So good I had to go back a second time the following evening. I just missed the eating-in experience by about ten minutes since the eating area closes at 8pm. All the same, you can't beat fish and chips in the hand, wandering the streets and staring in shop windows. All this to help soak up the malts before and after, served round the corner in 'The Green Room'. But that's another story.

We go up to perth 3 to 4 times a year and always stop of at holdgates for a fish tea We use the sit in part that is through the back of the shop, it is always clean and tidy and the girls are always happy to show you to a table and are friendly I always have a small fish tea ( i am an adult but feel the small fish tea is adaquate for me ) The fish is always lovely and full of flavour and batter is crisp, my other half has had the fish tea and enjoyed it also, he has also had the half chicken in batter which he also enjoyed, and he loves the potato fritters he says they are the best he has ever tasted . Worth a visit if you are in the area

Love he fish and chips all cooked to order. The Tattie fritters are to die for takes me back to the old days.

I visited this rea room with my wife, we wanted a no frills place to eat. The service was good and the menu had a variety of choices which you would expect from a fish & Chip Shop. We both had the fish tea and it was served with a slice of bread and pot of tea. The food was lovely and hot and very enjoyable with an ample portion. All in all an enjoyable experience and we would recommend this place for an enjoyable meal.

Holdgates has changed hands a few times over the last decade or so, but is now back to its best. As chippys go this is definitely one of the best around, the food is all very tasty and good value for money. Have sent many of my customers here and have yet to have a bad report back.

This was a Friday Treat way back in the 60s Fred the then owner always served up a lovely fish tea. Happy to say the current owners are excellent,even do pensioner size portions, still as good as ever , great value for money

We decided to stop here for lunch a few days ago, we've loved holdgates for about 10 years now however we'd hadn't been in a couple of years, we had fond memories of fantastic food and fantastic service however I think they've changed hands in the last few years, food was still lovely like we remember it freshly cooked to order lovely crispy chips and lovely cooked fish, however we found the cook who I think is the manager extremely rude we had asked him if the tea room is open and he just grunted "eh... Yeah" on the way out we'd said thanks for the lovely meal and goodbye and we just got "right okay see you later" but I will say this was just one staff member and all other staff were polite and helpful.

I came back home to Perth to visit family (we live in Norfolk). Took the children to get some fish and chips for tea. Really pleased to see haddock on the menu (given its cod mostly, in England). Very fresh fish and chips and all cooked to order. Really friendly service and lots of friendly banter. Loved the visit and great to be home! Thanks all - loved it!

Poor service and intransigent employees who insisted I need to sit at the door blocking access to the rest of the restaurant, to be bumped around by the waitress, and a cold biting wind. I asked three times to be seated in the restaurant in the three vacant tables - and refused each time. Will I eat there again No ! Will I attempt to eat there No ! Will I alert others . Yes ! Fortunately, I went elsewhere found a more respectful and committed - and very good fish and chip shop in the Old High Street Perth. Good service friendly atmosphere - and very good food.

Eat their one lunch, food was fine, but seating was a bit below average, we tested the traditional fish and chips meal and it was a good experience.

Always a warm welcome from the staff. Seating area is at the rear of the restaurant. Very pleasant waitress took my order and it was freshly cooked. Perfect portion for my lunch.

So cold that every person had to put coats on....too cold to eat and it was not that a low temp. Day.When l ask why it was so cold in the seating areas was told that I had to speak to the manager ........ Who told me when I pointed out how cold it was...... that he was too busy with take away cash customs to care and walked away.

The Chips were crispy on the outside, lovely and fluffy in the middle. The two bits of fish beautifully cooked, batter was not stodgy or lumpy or full of fat, a perfect crunch.The staff I spoke to very friendly and extremely helpful. On my experience I would highly recommend.

Customer service deplorable, has a restaurant inside but refused a woman with a very small child in to use toilet as she wasn't dining in, I directed her to a restaurant across the road. Food not as good as it used to be either. Won't be going back.

Go at least once a week with friends, the food is freshly cooked while you wait, a very good variety of food and also sit in which is good if you don't want to eat out of the paper.

The chips are so good but since it always takes so long it has put me off going! I do love the food but I don't go anymore due to how slow it is.

We stopped at Holdgates on our way through Perth. I popped in with my youngest son to get a takeaway while my husband circled the town and came back to pick us up (very limited parking outside). My son needed the toilet but we were told the toilets were for seated customers only. I've never heard of such a ridiculous thing. Many places understandably have a rule that toilets are for paying customers only but seated only? As we had another 15 minute drive til we got home, I thought it best we had our fish and chips as sit in rather than takeaway so my son could use the toilets.We took our seats and I got my mobile phone out so I could call my husband and tell him to park and bring our other boys in as we would have to eat in Holdgates. My battery was on 2% so I took my charger from my bag and plugged it into the socket at our table so I could make the call. At this point a member of staff literally ran across the room yelling "you cant charge your phone in here!" I thought maybe there was a health and safety issue with the socket but no, she said it was just against their rules.I will say though that all of these issues came from one member of staff and the other girl who was working did seem to be quite polite to the customers she was serving.When the food came it seemed to be reheated and was very over priced. Definitely wont be back.

Cooked to order the food is hot and fresh. The chips are by far the best from any takeaway in Perth. Good choice on the menu. Would like to see them offering red pudding suppers.

Did not like this chippy and thought the prices for the quality of food terrible. Staff were not friendly and did not make you feel welcome, one star is one too many. Soggy food, unfriendly staff and overpriced.

As I work along from Holdgates I normally eat out of there weekly sometimes twice weekly, after today the way I was treated I will not go going back, order a "Shmoo" milkshake which I have at least 3 times a week with having a supplier near my house, I ordered a vanilla milkshakes but was given banana, after I told them it was vanilla that was order they argued "Shmoo" didn't do vanilla milkshake? I mean really ive been having them for years the last one being yesterday, as they have only just started stocking Shmoo I get they don't know the company as well as me, but to take me over to the milkshake window and say to me " LOOK CHOCOLATE, STRAWBEERY, AND BANANA" was totally not professional at all, very disappointed with the service and wont be back. The not so gentleman was rude, cheeky and looked down on me. As im writing the review I should probably tell you about the time I found a screw in my chips, this chippy is clearly unhygienic too!

I am a vegetarian so don't eat from any chip shops but children eat them. On a recent visit to holgates my friends daughter needed a toilet bus was refused use of the toilet service. I was shocked when they said it was for dining in customers only and she couldn't use it even though we made a takeaway order. I will not be taken my kids back here again a paying customer is a paying customer. Very very poor business decision for them to make

From the outset I need to qualify my review in stating that I normally frequent the St Leonard's Bridge Chippy in Perth. I was tempted to try Holdgates for not much other reason than a desire for a change. I was pleased to wait for my order to be fried fresh which I think is essential to a good chippy. I was therefore disappointed that the outcome was to be served chips that were soft and tepid , and fish with undercooked batter. I am very particular about fish and chips so I am prepared to acknowledge that I might be overly critical. The place seems to be popular so would encourage others to try for themselves, and i would even be prepared to try Holdgates again.

I've visited Holdgates 3 times in the past few months & each visit is even more disappointing than the previous so the latest visit will definitely be the last. After having to wait over 10 minutes for "fresh" chips I was surprised to find them burnt. I was complaining about the tiny portion but after opening the bag i'm glad I didn't get more as they tasted horrible. The fish did taste good but I cut my mouth on quite a big fish bone so the best thing about the meal was the pickled onion. The staff are also rude, sullen & quite unpleasant, it's a shame that such an established business is going downhill.

I raved about the wonderful chips for quite a few bites after I started this smoked sausage supper - they were very hot (we were there at 21:15 shortly before they close) and cooked for our order. They were lovely and crispy, not in the least greasy, a nice size and totally delicious. We just hit it lucky as we don't know Perth and needed something quick to eat. I paid attention to the name so that I could see if it was award-winning. The lady who was serving was very pleasant.

i hadn't visited holdgates for a while but always remembered fondly the great food and friendly service.you can imagine my disappointment when i discovered my dining experience was not to the same level as previous.i don't wish to be too negative about the place but suffice to say i will not be going back and would not recommend friends or family to do so either ,the portions i received were far smaller than i remembered from my previous visits .there was a distinct lack of atmosphere in the cafe area and they must be on an economy drive as it felt as though the radiators had been removed .a lack of attentiveness from the staff made you feel as though any service request would be a bother to them , such a shame as i used to really enjoy my fish teas here.

I have visited this chip shop all my days and I have to say since the latest take over it has been better than ever. There has been a whole menu overhaul and the changes are brilliant. The chicken strips are FANTASTIC, especially with curry sauce! Staff are so polite and are so attentive - nothing is too much for them. My favourite night to go for my supper is a Wednesday. The food is beyond words them nights. Definitely recommend a visit

ok there were a couple of things......firstly it was quite cold in the place, secondly service was just ok. We had though great scampi and chip suppers in a really clean place and to be honest it's this sort of food I miss when you've worked abroad for years. As they say on the TV or at least they did this place does exactly what they say on the tin..........great value excellent fish and chips.....well done !

Have been reading recent rviews and can hardly believe what I am reading. We go every few weeks to Holdgates and have been delighted with what we are served up. We are fussy eaters by the way. Everything first class including the service. I do hope we have "not just been lucky" and the standard is not declining because it is the best fish and chips shop we have ever tried other than Anstruther Fish Bar.

I can honestly say that the food from Holdgates was awful. Soggy cold chips which were simply disgusting. I tried calling to complain but no answer, perhaps due to others complaining. Please avoid this place, I will never return nor will I ever recommend.

We have used this chippy twice now, on both occasions we phoned on ahead with our order asking for it to be ready at a specific time, the first time we had to wait around 10 minutes after requested time but this time it was closer to 25 minutes, when my wife complained about the wait she was rudely informed that he had been busy and hadn't even started preparing our order no apology what so ever,to add insult to injury when we returned home to enjoy our chippy we found ourselves very disappointed to find our fish dripping with grease,soggy and full of bones,Some businesses don't deserve customers,We will now be taking our custom else where & informing friends/family of the lack of customer courtesy given by this establishment.

Visited 2day with my son and will not return, reheated chips and a bowl of what looked like water with peas in! Disgusting, avoid avoid!!!!!

There is a small very clean eating area at the back of the take- away shop. It is sparsely decorated , but it does not need to be anything else. The fish and chips were beautifully cooked and the portions were large. I had delicious fritters instead of chips. The staff were very friendly and the service was quick. There is a small dessert menu, which we did not sample as the fish and chips were very filling. Great value for money.

My wife and I sat in the small restaurant for the real good value fish tea! The haddock was really top and my wife was glad she only ordered the small version! The fish was ably complemented by excellent chips and tea - all at a really good price!

we used to use this cafe for many years when in perth for the horse racing and got to know the owners who were always nice and accomodating, it was a nice clean cafe with a great atmosphere and me and my wife loved the banter between the locals and the staff, the food was cooked to perfection and the review "holdgates" got from tam cowan was indeed spot on .on our last visit in june we were left rather sad ,i suppose changes have to be made but when done for the worse i wonder why ? the fish was fresh but tiny ! the staff were allmost all different and the atmosphere was as flat as a pancake .overall its still an ok place for fish and chips but what happened to the old "holdgates" ?

While with good fish and chips the service was just not what it should be. They forgot my irn bru to start with. The waitress said it would be brought out straight away. 20 mins later it finally comes out. She had time to serve another couple who had just got in and waited 2 mins for their drinks which were irn bru. Not sure if I'll hurry back anytime soon

A Perth legend in its heyday but sadly now a shadow of its formers self. Service was sloppy and server seemed more interested in serving her pals with soft drinks. The battered fish was the soggiest I have had - my wife who is professionally qualified in food said it was the temperature of the batter. There are many better chip shops and better run chip shops in Perth

Passing through Perth we went to the Holdgate for a Pizza Supper and Fish Supper, we had been before so never thought twice about going again.My husband noticed he had dipped the pizza half in batter and said he didn't want it battered but deep fried, he was told it is called pizza crunch which means battered, but as he was not given a choice he still insisted he didn't want it battered, so the man took it through the back and came back with a nice clean half pizza. My husband alarmed by this asked the man if he had just washed it and he replied YES.I refund was requested and after a bit of huffing and puffing it was given. PLEASE note it is under new management/ownership

this is a very good chipper the size of the fish, and is more than you can some times want to eat, and is excellent fish supper and you will not get better quality, the staff are very good, and if you like your fish supper this is the place to go.

Some times chips are the only food that will hit the spot be it with fish or pie nothing else will do and with a hot cup of tea.....happy daysYou can take-out or sit in as I do..... you will have great tasting chips and being on the middle of the Perth's Main Street ( South Street ) very easy To find.....

£6 for a bowl of home-made soup, bread & butter, a supper with peas/beans and bread & butter plus a pot of tea.Can't be beat!

You won't find a better Fish supper in Perth that's for sure, always great quality and good sized portions to be had, they even deliver although I haven't tried that yet.

another excellent visit.. its getting regular! you can tell its good because at noon everyday theres a queue to get in! fish locally caught (45mins away) excellenmt variety, plenty for kids to go at. prices also good. the shop has been there for years and has kept its original character!! a must stop if your after a good fish supper!!

Holdgates seems to have been there forever, so it must be doing something right! We had the small fish tea - we have discovered that the large version is far too generous. The fish was fresh, in a tasty crispy batter, the chips also soft inside, crisp outside. A fresh cup of tea and a slice of white bread. Brown is not an option.The ideal place for a quick, inexpensive very enjoyable meal.
