Hoi Shing in Teignbridge

Checking times. Tonight. OCT 2023 Closed for refurbishment. I have to say it's the only Local Chinese Restaurant to sit in. The other two are Take Aways. I took a Take Away home. A Beef Curry (sauce a little hot)(not your normal curry sauce, in house made.) and Plain Boiled Rice. Also Fried Noodle (thin type) and Beef (not chow mein) (there are a bits of green pepper, mushrooms, in it) also asked for Bean Sprouts with added onion, (perfect) Fried Rice and Sweet and Sour Sauce. (It had in it onions, cucumber, carrots and chucks of pineapple. Got to be made in house and fresh).

Best chicken balls in Devon. We've eaten here quite a few times since we discovered it, they've never let us down. Beautiful food and friendly people who run it 🙂

We were visiting Dawlish from Manchester,and found this little Gem. We had take away from here twice it was that nice! Friendly staff and tasty food!! Highly recommended!!

Normally have great service here and food been going here for years but tonight placed an order an they didn't deliver one of the meals rang up and lady on phone very rude and not helpful kept saying you didn't order that food but she had charged us for it. Very poor customer service. Defo not ordering from this place again. O the lady also had the cheek to blame the driver what a joke. She finally said she will get driver to return with the missing dish but then said we will get it when we get it. Highly avoid this place.

Awful, Warm flat tonic water, dreadful food. Not friendly avoid. Never has any punters

Chicken Curry, Chips and BBQ spare ribs. portion sizes were very generous and fairly cheap. the curry had plenty of chicken and very tasty. around 6 Ribs to a portion in a nice sticky sauce, whats not to like. large bag of standard chips, happy to use again. only 20 mins from order to collection. 5* great service from the staff in the takeaway.

Its just a takeaway at the moment. But its spotless and the man taking our order was very friendly. We ordered soup for starts which was lovely. For mains we had a chicken curry, a special fried rice and a chicken with mushrooms. With a pepper sauce and a barbecue sauce. It was all gorgeous. Rive tasted fresh probably best I've had for a while and the chicken curry was lovely and thick and loads of chicken. The most meat we've ever had in a Chinese takeaway. The inky thing that let it down was the chips. They tasted reheated thus leading to being hard and unedible. Bit disappointed as everything else was spot on!! If your in the area and struggling to decide, I highly recommend this one.

We ordered a meal for our family to be delivered to Cofton Holiday Park . The service was fast and efficient. All the dishes were cooked to perfection and tasted delicious. The portion size was really generous. I would 100% recommend this lovely takeaway.

We ordered online and the system worked well via 'Just Eat'. We ordered to collect, and it the meal was ready on time. The staff were polite and efficient. We were, however, slightly disappointed by the toughness of the chicken that we ordered.

Decided not to cook as I was tired and was getting late. We ordered what we usually have when at home which is, beef curry, shredded beef in a sweet chilli sauce and fried rice. It was all lovely and the portions were huge. Definitely recommend.

I was really tired and didn't fancy cooking so we had a drive around to see what was open. Didn't fancy chippy and we found this Chinese takeaway open. Food was lovely and portions were really big. Would definitely use again when we are next down

Absolutely amazing food best Chinese in dawlish by a long shot, I’ve lived here most my life and used Mai lei but decided to stay this one and I am never going back! Amazing fresh food smells perfect and tastes incredible

Order was delivered on time and warm We ordered chicken balls in batter which were nice and bbq sauce. We also had noodles with beansprouts and it was meh, we ordered duck in plum sauce which was 8.10 and the duck had gristle and it had no flavour what so ever. Most of it went to waste. The chicken noodle soup tasted like dish water and was also wasted. The satay sauce on the other hand was amazing and made the noodles editable:)

I have ordered from here a couple of times before and had no problems but I shan't be ordering from them again. The food arrived an hour after the latest estimated delivery time and the restaurant didn't even give us an update. We rang several times and it just rang out. I appreciate that a Saturday night might be busy but it is unacceptable that it should be an hour late and not even send a text. When it did finally arrive, no apology was given. After accepting the delivery, I opened it up to discover that it wasn't even correct! 3 of the items we ordered had been replaced with something completely different! Save yourself the hassle and order from somewhere else.

Used them twice. First time late. Second time I’m still waiting, 45 minutes late. Can’t get them on the phone. Don’t reply via Just Eat. Won’t be using tgg hi em again.

Poor experience. 1 hour for food when it wasn't busy. Frozen chips, soggy rice. Not ordering here again

I CANT RECOMMEND HOI SHING TAKEAWAY ENOUGH. OUTSTANDING FOOD, NICE PORTIONS. MIGHT SAY TO MUCH, BUT YOU CAN NEVER HAVE TO MUCH. QUICK AND RELIABLE DELIVERY, JUST MAKE SURE YOU HAVE YOUR VOLUME ON SO WHEN THEY HAVE ARRIVED TO DELIVER YOU DONT KEEP THE DRIVER WAITING 😉. All in all a fantastic meal.

The best Chinese in Dawlish, both eat in and takeaway are always lovely. Ken is more then accommodating and the food is never greasy. I've been coming here since I was very young and will continue to do so.

Literally the best Chinese I've ever had. Would eat it every day if I could.

If I could give 0 stars I would, this was absolutely revolting. Tasted like the smell of a pub carpet and I assure you that's no exaggeration.

Recently moved to Dawlish so only second visit but very impressed with the food and surroundings.

Three of us went for dinner at the Hoi Shing and by the end of dinner we'd decided that this was definitely the very best Chinese food in the area. The service was quick and friendly, and the portions were generous.

We eat here on New Years Eve heading into 2020. The food was lovely especially the starters. The entertainment was the fact that the manager only had two waitresses supporting him who had only started in the job very recently. He was having to deal with a long string of people calling to order food or arriving to collect takeaways on top of the people like us who were in the restaurant. The waitresses were trying their best and despite making some what we thought were amusing mistakes we got what we ordered and had a great meal and I am sure the owner will have the waitresses fully trained soon! Eat here is you are in Dawlish!

Visited last Friday night for a sit in meal. Ordered the meal for 2 for £20.50 each and it was absolute gorgeous food. Good service, good beer and quick serving of food. Would definitely recommend to anyone!!!

We ordered food for collection to eat at home and the food was delicious. I had sweet and sour pork and loved it. My husband had the special fried noodles and really enjoyed it. The only thing for booking a table or ordering for collection is they are not so great at answering the phone shop you're better off going into the restaurant to contact them.

Nice atmosphere, excellent food and service. Will definitely come again on our next holiday . The food was lovely and fresh, reasonably priced and delicious with fast efficient service

Friends took us here whilst we were visiting Dawlish.As there were 4 of us, we each chose a different dish and shared.The quality of food was top notch and the flavours were a lot better than most takeaways I've ever had.Can't wait to visit Dawlish again.

We dropped in just as the restaurant opened for the evening. Ken, the waiter was very friendly and welcoming. The food was freshly cooked and delicious. Portion sizes were more than ample. This is a really good place to eat.

This is a typical chinese restaurant that does not differ much to any other Chinese up and down the country. The food was OK and the portions were sufficient. The plates were warmed so that the food didn't go cold too quick. What made this place good was how pleasant the staff were. They checked if anyone had any allergies and they were quick with the service even though they appeared to be in a panick with the number of guests they were dealing with. Compared with other similar restaurants I did find this one a bit expensive.

Hoi Shing, Chinese restaurant, is well worth a visit!Sadly, i have never seen it busy, which is a real shame as people are missing out on good food, however this does mean that you’re bound to get a table and it is the only Chinese restaurant and takeaway in town....2 other takeaways but they have nowhere to sit and eat on their premises. The staff are very polite and are eager to cater to your needs, even asking if there are any dietary requirements once you have ordered so they get everything just right! Last night we were 2 of only 4 customers but it was quite early, however our food came out piping hot very quickly! I know some people have had issues with the food here but , and I speak as I find, I have never had anything less than bloody lovely food from here. I only ever go for 2 dishes...Kung Po Chicken (which is the best in Dawlish) and the Deep Fried Crispy Seaweed ( I don’t know if it actually IS seaweed but whatever, it’s lovely) and I am never disappointed! So please don’t be put off by the amount of tables that are free when you walk through the door. Sit down and order yourself one of the best Chinese meals in Dawlish, you won’t be disappointed!!!!

Just been in for an early evening supper. Superb quality food, excellent service and good value. Not cheap, but who can rely on cheap? I thoroughly recommend this place.

I'm being generous giving two stars more because of my lovely nature than as a reflection upon the quality of the food. Too much salt in everything we ordered. One item left out of our take away order. Best thing I can say is that we didn't get ill from eating the food and the staff were very friendly. Please try harder.

My wife and I had an excellent meal here and the service was very good.

My wife and I visited this restaurant on 16th June 2019. Food was nice & tasty. We had over ordered food and instead of throwing it away we asked the owner if he would put it in take away containers for us which he he agreed to do. So, the bill came and it was £53 for our food and drinks and £2 for ‘Packaging’. Packaging? Packaging? Did you really just charge us £2 to put our food in 3 tiny foil containers? Yep! How odd! In over 20 years of visiting Chinese Restaurants we have never heard of anything like this! The irony of this story is that we normally tip around 10% or even round it up so we would have normally rounded the bill up from £53 to £60. That would have been a £7 tip. Your stupidity in charging us £2 for ‘packaging’ actually made us leave you no tip and actually cost you £5! What’s more, when we visit Dawlish again we will never spend another penny with you. Further more, you just handed a bonus to your competitors by reducing your average score rating on here. Charging us £2 packaging for pouring our meals into 3 foil containers worth 5pm’s each is madness. What a shame you did that because we enjoyed the food. We understand that you have a business to run and need to make a profit. We have no problem with that. However, you literally charged us £1.85 (£2 less the 15p for the 3 foil containers) for your time in pouring the food in the containers. Thank god we never asked you to open the door for us. How much would that of cost? Silly, silly Man!

Just had a sit down meal here. Arrived just as they opened, and had the place to ourselves for a bit. The staff were excellent, and if possible, the food was even better. Absolutely delicious. We'd been told to try the smoked chicken starter, which we did, but as a main course, and the kung po chicken. Both were fantastic. I don't know why I'm singling those two out, it was all good. Maybe just my favourites of the meal? Will be returning. We also picked up a takeaway menu, and after a quick read, the takeaway prices are possibly the lowest in Dawlish?

Got a take away meal this evening, DELICIOUS!!! food is great value, good portion sizes. Staff were very friendly. Will definitely be back next time we are in Dawlish 👍

Just a quick meal after a day's working locally. No fuss and easy menu choices, served quickly (restaurant was not busy) excellent service in typical regional Chinese restaurant atmosphere, just like such venues were 20 years ago. Time travel in possible in these out of the way tourist towns. Recommend the Chef Special Chow Mein and Chinese Tea.

Excellent food, I can`t wait to go there again. Was a very nice experience because they only brought the Chinese sticks with the food and that made me learn how to use them! It took me more than an hour to finish the meal but at the end of it I didn`t feel like I will explode (the sticks “forced” me to eat very slow and small bites) and I became a master in using the sticks!!

Had a lovely meal restaurant was really quiet for a Friday night but the phone rang constantly for take away the staff were very attentive the set meal at £16.00 was very good value the food was excellent I really recommend this restaurant

Walked in for a take away not long after they opened, it wasn’t very tidy, cost is reasonable... the chicken balls and egg fried rice were average but very disappointed in the ‘chicken chow mein’ i thought it was unusual for it to be full of raw vegetables and not much chicken, it didn’t taste great either which was a disappointment as I was really looking forward to it! I’m gutted that our usual Chinese shop wasn’t open today nevertheless I wouldn’t recommend it

Chinese takeaway I wouldn't give it away. Fried rice was more like boiled, chicken chow mein was full of bean sprouts and our crispy beef was squid. when we went back to complain about the dishes {all we asked for was a refund on the crispy squid} we had a stand up argument with the manager his lady assistant and then the chef came out saying that we've never had Chinese food before and we didn't know what we were on about. customers always right! not here you just get called liars. NEVER AGAIN WOULD I STEP FOOT IN THIS PLACE.

Eat here on a Saturday night at 8ish.

Tried to order delivery takeaway from this place on two separate occasions. However on both occasions when telephoning the order through we were told that the delivery driver was not working. This was despite popping in previous to ask if delivery was available and being told yes.

Expensive, adequate food and clumsy service. Desperately in need of renovation and a good clean. Tables not big enough for 2 adults and 3 children, would give it a miss.

OMG!!!!! The best food you'll ever eat and not expensive either. With £20 per person you eat till you explode even thou it's not a buffet style.

Only went due to it being the only Chinese in Dawlish open on a Tuesday. Waited 30 mins for 2 chow mein dishes. Food was very poor quality, soggy chicken drenched with soy sauce. Noodles were not fresh either.picture is of the food thrown in the bin, no one wanted to eat it! Although I am a local I will not be going there again!

Found this on our last night in Dawlish. Wished we had gone there before. It was lovely. The food and service were excellent. It is a beautiful little restaurant, such a nice setting. Cost was very reasonable. Make sure you visit. It is worthwhile.

Popped down to Dawlish for an evening stroll around the town, used Tripadvisor to recommend a Chinese. Hoi Shing came up in the search with a good rating.

Visited this restaurant this evening, I found the staff spoke very basic English and tended to watch over you whilst eating, this maybe due to the fact that the restaurant wasn’t busy. Service was average. Numerous main dishes were ordered, however I found the prices above average. For example, £9.50 for a beef curry and the portion size didn’t reflect the price. All in all a average Chinese but worth a special visit

One of the best tasting chinese takeaways we have had for some time. The ordering wasn't easy as the person didn't speak much English but we got there and she did her best. Portions were very decent and price normal, so all round very happy.

Don't be put off by this little restaurants kirbside appeal as the food is really good.

The Hoi Shing is in our opinion is the best Chinese take away restaurant in Dawlish, BUT. As we have found out the dishes do not always contain the all the ingredients that are listed on the take away menu. For example the Bean shots are missing in the Monks Vegetables. Kung Po king Prawn spicy, sweet & sour there was no sweet & sour just lots of chillies on our last order. We ordered egg fried rice NO EGG. Overall miles better than others in area.

Visited with friends early. on a Saturday evening, the food was good enough. at the price & the wine is also good value, however the waitress was clearly a trainee and the manager stood over her while she took our order & insisted on coaching her on the correct method of pouring wine, this made both the waitress and ours

A huge selection of freshly cooked dishes. Fantastic Chinese ribs and tasty rice and vegetable dishes. They didn't leave me really thirsty the evening after either! Really lovely attentive service from all members of staff.

Thank you for the lady in the counter and all the kind staffs. I just arrived home and it s the first time I leave a review of restaurants. Everyone was so kind and friendly so when I ordered too spicy noodle they changed immediately to a new one. I hope everything remains great just like today. I'm confident that I will be here again later when I visit Dawlish. Thank you for all. I truly enjoyed the time there.

Rang for a delivery and the girl on the other end barely understood a word of English. Gave up on the order after repeating myself several times before I even got the chance to try the food.

All I want from a Chinese takeaway is good quality standard, no fuss, no frills and value for money food. Well, my special curry when I opened it after getting it home had the appearance of not a creamy magnolia colour as I was expecting, but more of a reddish colour with a sweet and sour sauce texture. Shocked was I, yes, the taste was salty and fierce. My wife had a chicken chow mein which contained about 2 noodles and rest vegetables. The chicken and mushroom dish was overly seasoned with pepper and left me and wife fighting for the jug of water. On a positive note, the prawn crackers, egg fried rice and chicken balls were good, hence the score of 2. I wish takeaways would stop experimenting away from tried and tested mainstream comfort food, as I feel I've wasted £26. if it's not broken, don't fix it.

What a find ... We went for the Takeaway option & the food was excellent ... The meals had a real fresh ingredient flavour ... Good portion size ... The only disappointment was I usually have half the wife's meal but the food was that good she ate the lot !! ... After a shocking meal from another Dawlish Takeaway the night before we ate here every evening of our remaining holiday

Visited this restaurant this evening and was greeted by a member of the waiting staff who was clearly a trainee and was very delightful. However, the manager stood over her correcting every word that came out of her mouth and insisted she worked on her pronunciation whilst taking our order. It was clear this made her very nervous and made us as customers very unsettled.

Lovely food fast really fast service sit in or take away friendly staff. Short walk from the sea the take away menus are different from the sit in so good choices had to be changed but the food was lovely

Nice place to eat with a good menu. Good prices and a choice of food and a choice of wines and beers.

Great choice of dishes which taste good. Service is charming and attentive. Decor is traditional. All in all a very pleasant experience.

Crispy fried duck very nice, special noodles excellent, chicken with cashews had loads of veg but a bit light on chicken. That came to over £25 and we had to wait over an hour to get it, so a bit luke warm.

Love the food and very reasonable prices

The manager was very rude to his staff right by our table. This put us off the place straight away. And then to cap it all they charged us £1 per tray to take the food we couldn't eat home. We won't be visiting again that's for sure.The food wasn't bad though.
