Ordered a takeaway, a little of all the traditional dishes, Well impressed, best Chinese in Devon in my opinion. I'd definitely order again and try more dishes

We ordered a delivery from Hoi Shan, Salt and Pepper chicken with egg fried rice and other dishes. Very disappointed there was hardly any meat on the chicken, rock hard and overcooked, it tasted like yesterday's food warm up. Egg fried rice was dried up and hardly any fried egg inside it. Very bland indeed. I called the manager to hopefully resolve the issue he was very rude and couldn't care less on the phone which I found was very unprofessional. I would not be going back there again. Appalling service.

Unfortunately this was by far the worst Chinese meal I’ve ever had in my life. It was so bad it’s almost put me off having another one ever again. I think it will take about a year before I will even think about it. The pork/ chicken/ shrimp balls were over cooked and extremely fatty. The rice was stodgy and the after taste awful. After eating a third of the meal we just couldn’t face another mouthful and quickly made a cup of tea to get rid of the taste. I think giving it a one star review is well over generous but I can’t go lower. Simply awful and they must realise it. Hoi Sham not Hoi Shan

It's hit and miss sometimes.had another curry Friday night 27 Jan 23. ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTING 💯 NOT FRESH. NO TASTE. HUBBY HAD CHICKEN BALLS IN BATTER AWFUL DRY OVER COOKED.

I ordered the beef crispy noodles and what we got was soggy noodles, which were tasteless and barely any sauce. Beef was chewy and of poor quality. Also ordered chicken with cashew, again tasteless and barely any sauce. Salt and pepper chips were stale and had no flavor. They seemed old to me. The whole meal was bad and I wish I would have just set fire to the £30 we spent n it. No point in complaining, as their customer service is worse than their food. Don't waste your money.

Some friends were round and we wanted a last minute take away. One recommended HoI Shan from which they had picked up take aways from in the past. We ordered a home delivery from here for the first time, it was fab, arrived sooner than expected, food was hot and really tasty. So on that basis I am writing to recommend and I was a bit surprised to read the other reviews on here. Food and service were great for us, so our overall rating for a home delivery is excellent. We will be ordering again!

Really nice food and reasonable prices

Worse service I have ever encountered laughed and mocked that they got the order wrong. Belittles my daughter, offered a voucher than took it away from us. Laughing in the back ground by a cocky little guy on benefits, I will never go back and will shout though the roof tops how disgusting this place is. 10 years served customer, will not be going back!!! This evening we ordered dishes we've ordered a few times before and enjoyed. Holy heck...what went wrong tonight?? Now we like spicy food but the dishes tonight were out of this world hot and totally inedible unless you have an asbestos mouth and a gut of steel! Two thirds of the entire order of nearly £60 had to go in the bin. Not expecting or wanting anything other than a small apology we called and was greeted by a very angry person (not the normal receptionist) who laid the blame at OUR door for the choices we made. Um...not No. 1 in the customer service handbook. With so many quality Chinese restaurants in the town I think you might consider how your level of arrogance and anger might damage your reputation. We wouldn't risk spending our money there again I'm afraid!

I absolutely love hoi shan's food but you couldn't get a worse service if you tried. If you collect you wait an hour for an appointment and then wait another 20 mins past your appointment for your food to be ready and they never tell you anything when you're in the shop. If you get it delivered you are told up to an hour and 45 mins then they take 2 and a half hours to deliver. Bad attitude from staff and poor communication. Even before covid it was this bad. Problem is, I've tried other places and none are as good food wise. I'm seriously getting fed up with the wait times now though. I ordered at 7.30pm and I won't be eating until 10pm tonight despite being told a much shorter wait time. Please sort your service out or you will keep losing customers! This happens every time I order (can't get through to order any earlier), not happy at all!!! Might start putting an order in the day before to get it on time!

Ordered a chicken curry chow mein and pancake rolls. Where told hour /hour and haif wait. It did arrive later than that... But it was worth the wait. It was hot and very tasty full of flovour. The delivery driver was most apologetic. We both thoughly enjoyed it.

Decided not to cook so treated myself to a take away. Had not read the reviews before ordering. The chap who was working there was very friendly. The food was excellent good portion sizes and really tasty all the food was hot even after I had driven about 15 minutes home

Had an order of £21 the rice was cold the sauces were cold and the chips were like they'd been left in the fryer for the whole evening.after being in a recovery truck as a keyworker me or my husband didnt fancy cooking and thought wed have a treat.after going with them for 4+ years the manager was extremely rude. The receptionist said we will receive a full credit note. Nope all that was on the credit note was a credit of a side so chips or chicken balls etc. Never will I go back there again.

Ordered a meal and was given the wrong meat in the dish. Ate some of it, thought it was over cooked as was very crispy and not nice. Took back the remainder of it as was not happy. They admitted they had given me beef instead of chicken - I could not see it was beef as it was in a crispy coating and covered in sauce otherwise I would have complained sooner. They refused to replace the dish even though it was their mistake as I had eaten around half of it. Been using Hoi Shan for a very long time. Will never use them ever again. Felt sorry for the young man behind the counter as he only relayed the message from the management. Management- if you make a mistake then you correct the mistake, simple as!

Our first complaint is that a few weeks ago we had family to stay from New Zealand and my parents decided to have a Chinese family meal from their regular takeaway, they tried to phone through the order and could not get a reply. In the end my dad who has been quite ill recently drove to the Chinese to find out it was shut for 4 weeks !?!? Why no answer phone message to let people know....? We ordered a Chinese elsewhere. Anyway now that Hoi Shan have returned from their holidays we called through our order, we were told up to 2 hours, we called after waiting an hour & three quarters to be told they were waiting for a driver to return so would be another half hour at least, totally unacceptable so we cancelled the order, why give our hard earned cash for such poor service. Fair enough we don’t live central to Newton Abbot but we do pay more for delivery, such a shame as the food is good and we have used them for quite a while but enough is enough !

Ordered beef and tomato as always sorry to say not as good as previously.beef was very chewy tomatoes still quite hard and carrot raw...noodles and beansprouts were tasty...spring rolls were tasty. .chicken in hot sauce as far as my husband said was ok.. but would not order it again..like most take always its a bit hit and miss....

Went to shop after work. Orderd Beef & Tomato and Chicken Cantonese style with chips and spring rolls. Waited about 20 mins. Was busy so no problem..food was hot and tasty...will go again...

Don't have many takeaways, but when we do it is usually a Chinese from Hoi Shan. Big order today with a range of dishes. Could not deliver for an hour and a half so I collect in 30 mins. Food was really good. Very happy with our choice.

Dreadful service. After making an order and being told an hour delivery they rang after an hour and a half to say they wanted another £2 or they wouldn’t driver or order. Bearing in mind this was a £30+ order and they said the food would be at least another half an hour. Awaiting a refund. Wouldn’t touch them with a barge pole.

We ordered food an hour and a half ago and we’ve JUST had a phone call to say they got the delivery charge wrong and we’d have to pay extra when the driver got here...and it would be another half an hour on top of the hour and 20 mins we’ve already waited. We refused to pay extra for delivery when our order was going to be 40 minutes later than we’d already been told so they cancelled our order rather than losing a whole £2. The WORST customer service ever. Very bizarre.

The food is usually very good, but the delivery time is shocking, we are regularly told it will be an hour (it is always late) but after a 3hr 45 min wait we decided to collect from then on.Tonight the food tasted really bland and they forgot 1 of our dishes. I'm not going to bother complaining tonight as I have before and they have done absolutely nothing about it.Going down hill very fast.

Surely the best Chinese Takeaway in Newton Abbot.

I ordered a takeaway at 6.39pm on a Friday night and was told the wait would be 1 hour 20 mins understand it’s busy on a Friday night however 2 hours later and no delivery.

Arrived home with takeaway chicken curry to our disappointment not one piece of chicken in the container , called shop and they said it was impossible and that we were lying ! If they really think I can be assed to swindle a Chinese out of £5;40 then what stupid customer service .. if they looked at their phone records they will see we spend £1000 a year at their shop, based on us being accused of being liars I would recommend everyone uses alternative takeaway because if the chef makes a mistake they will not accept it under any circumstances. Most expensive curry sauce and chips I have ever eaten ! If this takeaway can afford to insult and accuse loyal customers of dishonesty for a pathetic gain then it won’t take long before this Chinese is closed down due to no customers ! Avoid like the plague .

Been purchasing takeaways every week at average cost of £30...you do the maths. Tonight we ordered chicken curry.....arrived with no chicken whatsoever ....only sauce and onions. Clearly a mistake....anyone can make. The shock comes when we telephone to complain to be accused of telling lies! What? That we took the chicken out and tried to claim a free curry!??? Attitude was rude and insisted we were lieing. Talked over us and refused to consider it possible that an error was made in the kitchen. Obviously we won't be returning and suggest that this was a rude and disingenuous theft.

Great service, friendly and efficient. The food was disappointing, overcooked clumpy rice, tasteless. Foo Yung smelt and tasted of chlorine, more like over cooked scrambled egg. Sweet and Sour balls were doughy, wet and not crisp. Disappointing food, won't be bothering again,

This was not our first takeaway from here and it did not disappoint, ordered over the phone to collect and when I arrived it was ready

After using hoi Shan for a long time I am very disappointed that we rang up with a big order because we have family round there was a two hour wait which was fine on the two hour point we had a call saying it would be at least another hour and a half so we are all left hungry.

The ordering is always easy with good customer service. The food never takes to long and is always tasting really good.

Los fideos son increíbles. Probablemente el mejor que he probado en general. Es una pena que el Hoi An Shan no está en 'Ir a comer, tienes que llamar a través de una entrega, pero son rápidos y la comida siempre llega caliente. Hemos usado este restaurante por muchos años hace 4 semanas tuvimos un mal contacto comida hecha de descuento en próximo pedido! ! ! Utilizar de nuevo, nuevo repugnante cada comida diferente de lo que normalmente nos dan, salsa barbacoa completamente cambiado grueso bastante pesado claramente vienen de un paquete. Have been using this Chinese for 7 years after having issues with another, never had anything to complain about, friendly service, quick delivery but can be hard to get hold of on Fridays and Saturdays as it's very busy! Reasonably priced and great portion sizes, I even work at this Chinese (does not affect my opinion of the place as I ordered food long before I started working here), the managers are amazing and can speak fluent English. As I work here I know what happens behind the scenes and there's nothing I can fault about the place!! Would defiantly recommend to anyone contemplating where to go as there's a few in the area

Ordering at 7.00 at night and telling us it won't be here till 8.30 was bad enough. But then having to ring TWICE and being told it won't actually arrive till 10.00 is a joke. After being lied to the first time on the phone and being told it was out for delivery it turns out it actually hadn't left at all. When it finally turned up at 10.30 it was cold, chewy and sparse. We were offered some freebees, as compensation, and received none whatsoever. 10/10 would NOT go back. Awfulllllllll. I wish there was a score lower than terrible.

Chefs here have come and gone over the years, but the food remains top quality, it is take away only, and you rarely have to wait more than 10 minutes. It was one of the first places to offer crispy sticks of beef, in a great spicy / sticky sauce and I,ve rarely been dissapointed with any of the dishes

Having previously been a fan of the Royal China across the road, I had not used the Hoi Shan until this weekend.We were very pleasantly surprised , the food was really excellent and offered a lot more choice than I remember before. It was very busy but the young lady running front of house (just 15) was so professional and unflustered , despite the phone ringing again as soon as she put it down every time.Sorry Royal China we have been converted!

I called in here on the first night of our holiday after visiting another Chinese takeaway a short walk away which didn't do crispy duck. It was roughly a 45 minute wait which was longer than expected although it was a Saturday, while waiting it was apparent other people had been waiting a long time for their food too and I overheard a call where someone had been waiting over two hours for a delivery.Overall the food was very good for a takeaway meal, probably one of the better Chinese takeaways I've had, portions were a reasonable size too although spending close to £50 I was slightly disappointed complimentary prawn crackers weren't included.I would imagine the wait time midweek would be much shorter especially if looking for the food to be delivered but I think it was worth the wait.Almost a 5 star review, just the long waiting time made it a 4 star.

We use this take away a few times a month and have never been disappointed. The food is consistently good, staff friendly and waiting time is what you'd expect. They do seem to have an incredible turnover in staff because they are all very young and go off to University or find full time employment etc. But we've never had a problem at all. If you want a Chinese takeaway in Newton Abbot, you need look no further.

Having been a loyal customer to Hoi Shan over the years and ordering from them for take away or collections it can be very trusting getting hold of them to order!the phone can ring and ring without answer for ages until you get fed up and go else where!trouble is the food is grey just frustrating trying to order!when it eventually gets to you it's lovely and piping hot!

I find it hard to give a takeaway 5 star given the nature of the food but this comes close and is the best of it's type in Newton. The food is always hot, never over-cooked, awlays very tasty, and never greasy. I have usually gone down to order and wait and notice that you are probably best doing so as it ensures the freshest result - listening to food orders being taken by the courteous staff I reckon that it's far, far, quicker than getting a delivery and maybe marginally quicker than phoning in an order (if you can get through).No tables, purely a takeaway.

I ordered my food to be delivered and was told it would take an hour to an hour and a half.....2 hours 15 mins later it arrived with some chips missing and I'd asked for no veg in one of the meals...it had veg in .Husband phoned to complain and asked if they would send the missing chips out and replace the meal that had veg in he was told he'd have to pay for delivery...having already paid once he question why he should have to pay again and all he got was abuse to the point where he heard the manager say put the phone down on him I'll ban him!!!!! At the end of the day it was there mistake but wouldn't admit it they more or less said he was lying about the missing chip...disgusting, we've used this place for the last 12years and will never again order from there....rude staff and even ruder management.Avoid at all cost!!!!

First time using this place thought we would take a gamble as our usual was Kai Ming which is situated on the same street . Any how it was coming up closing time so my partner rang ordered and collected it . Was really looking forward to Chinese when we opened the containers and tasted the food it was absolutely poor quality Tasted cheap and bland no flavour at all. . !!!! We both had one mouthful and left it on the plate seriously the worst ever Chinese we've had !! We even rang to complain and there reply was no one else has ever complained ..,and we won't be giving you a refund Ect dispite us only having had a mouthful of food each !! customer service horrendous !! We used this place for the first time last night as we are new to the area and were very happy with what we got. The staff were helpful and friendly, the delivery driver pleasant and the food...the food was amazing. It arrived quicker than we were told and was piping hot and so very tasty. We will 100% be using them again.

Have had several meals and have had excellent food, but on Thursday night was not good the sweet. & sour was very sweet the beef & onion had no flavour. As for the small pancake rolls were awful. Will be leaving this takeaway for a while

Just rude ordered 40 pounds worth of food it's came it was cold the rice was very greasy and so salty couldn't eat it .called to complain owner was very rude told me she was too busy to deal with complaints told me to like it or don't use them again .Well I won't use you ever this take away used to be the best in Newton Abbot for Chinese don't know if it has new owners but you need to look at your customer service and improve you food standards to how they used to be ... we have had a couple of occasions where bits have been missing from our order. On the most recent occasion we called to complain about this and they said we could have it if we came and got it. Excuse me it is your mistake. The staff there are beyond rude, they basically accused us of making it up because 'they don't make mistakes'. If I was going to make it up I would have asked for something more than the missing rice! We then had to share one of the special fried rice dishes to cover the meal and it was agreed that they would credit this from our next order. This was not the case and they continue to be rude and even hung up. We will certainly not be using them ever again and would urge everybody else to stay away.They need to learn what good customer service is. Just terrible.

Ordered a takaway to be delivered, was delivered had to wait 45 mins but it was a saturday, arrived very hot the food was excellent I will definately go there again, I had special curry which had loads of meat and their spring roll was to die for, my husband had \pho with cahews excellent well done

I've ordered from Hoi Shan a lot in the past, but the quality of food has declined to being the same old cash and carry slop you get from any old Chinese takeaway. Double doses of orange food colouring and MSGs all round. We gave them a miss for a while, but we're at friends tonight who still order from them. Ordered at 8.20, phoned at 9.40 to see where the order was and we were told the driver wasn't even back from a previous delivery and would be coming to us next (which would be at least 20 mins as we live outside newton). No apology or offer of any consolation. We phoned back to cancel and they had the cheek to sound put out by us, instead of apologising for the inconvenience. Order cancelled, still no apologies. Sure Friday nights are busy, but getting another cook, another driver and another phone line would be helpful, then at least you could compete on service, if not food quality. We won't be using you again, there are SO many other options that get it right, why should we give you yet another chance?

Used this take away several times so thought its about time for a review. It shows how it has a reputation as the phone is fairly busy and therefore you could get fed up. They advise you when it will be ready and they have never yet been Kate for me. Delivery can take a little time due to being busy and popular. Food, never gad a bad take away yet.

Can't fault this place and order with them everytime. Amazing food, good prices and delivery all over the local area for a small charge! Never had any problems or have heard of any, all family and friends go to Hoi Shan for their Chinese.

Used this takeaway for 20 years .had wrong food order which include pork ribs for our jewish guests .when I tried to discuss this with a member of staff I was informed that all bbq sauce is made with pork juices which isnt mentioned in the menu. I asked how would they explain the use of nut oil in food? Her response was that she is busy and its not up to her to inform customers its there own problem. Think its very irresponsible not to let people know what you are eating .report this to environmental health.
