We have a chinese here every week and always the portions are great food is piping hot and tasty, i do not know where the bad reviews came from but whoever wrote them has no taste, the huge pankake roll can be greasy but leave on a t towel for 10 min bingo, all the rest is tasty well cooked food, recomended

£3.90 for prawn crackers is disgusting

Used to be the best for decades now the worst tried to give them a chance as new owners but not wasting any more money all there food is tasteless. Now 2 yrs later after some people said it was like it used to be Ill give it another go nothings changed curry was like tasteless dishwater

Without doubt the worst Chinese takeaway I’ve ever tasted, The pork tasted like it was off, the chicken pumped with water and salt as for the noodles 🤯 How can you get noodles wrong ??? Save your money guys !!! I’ve tasted better pot noodles !!! Most of it went in the bin !!!

This temple of deluxe Chinese food is not just the best in Newton Abbot (low standards by the way) but potentially the greatest takeaway in the world. As a food connoisseur, I would give this takeaway approximately 5 Michelin stars, highlighting how impressed I was at the food on offer. The service was immense, as the young girls treated me nicely, as I rolled in with my wheelchair, and the boys at the back of the kitchen also waved to my young children, which made their day. I was so impressed with the taste of the food, so I will have to come again soon!

Stay away from this place apart from being very rude from the man eating his dinner out the Back , there were ants crawling all over the counter wish I had seen this before ordering my sub par food nor good, thumps down 👎

Have been using Double Luck for many years and have never had a bad word to say about it until now. Collected a Roast Pork Chow Mein which I was looking forward to. Unfortunately it was a case of hunt the pork it was very thin slivers which you had to hunt for. The next thing is the counter staff. I will not go into details but the young chap that collected the food from the kitchen needs to be trained on hygiene before he is allowed to handle food as he has some very unhealthy practices. This has put me off going here ever again

Brilliant service, hot and tasty food 😋

This takeaway was always our go to for Chinese. Haven't been in a few years so was really looking forward to my supper today. I have to say I was mighty disappointed, the food was cold, the chow mein had no gravy with it, so extremely dry and overall not the experience I was anticipating. Have you changed hands over the last few years? Sadly, I will think twice before I come back 😔

Lovely place, lovely owners that would do anything for you, the daughters are very friendly and the food is very nice. I'm a fussy eater and also diabetic and they (if they have time and not to busy) do my food to match my diabetic diet. Highly recommend this place. I would give more stars if I could.

First off I wIll say that I used to live in Newton Abbot in a previous life and, along with a couple of mates when we were at school, we would have a takeaway from Double Luck every Tuesday night. This was 35 years ago and I haven’t eaten their food in probably 30 of those years as I moved away. I used to rate every other British Chinese Restaurant against Double Luck, as the food was faultless, week in week out. That’s how good it was. We’re in Newton at the moment, so decided to see how it compares all these years later. IT IS JUST AS EXCELLENT. I’ve read reviews on here saying that there are new owners etc., that may be true I don’t know. But….either they’ve kept the chef on, or the new owners cook to the same recipes, or the owners haven’t changed at all. It still looks the same restaurant (bizarrely) after all these years, but that is only a great thing. Nostalgia hit. The Spring Rolls are still gargantuan, stuffed to bursting, the Special Fried Rice is still choca with chicken, ham and char sui pork. The Chow Mein is one of the best I’ve tasted, with proper thick noodles and generous amounts of meat, and the Sweet & Sour Sauce is exactly how it should be. When ordering, I was wary of the prices as they’re a fraction more than what we’re used to paying in East Sussex. Then we opened the bag and saw the size of the containers. These are deep containers, as they always used to be before the world went mad and the prices went up. All the takeaways round our way have been using shallow containers now so you’re basically getting about 50% of the food we used to get in the 80s and 90s. Double Luck still use deep containers and they fill them. This represents EXCELLENT value for money. We live 240 miles away but we would happily drive down every now and then for the quality we’ve enjoyed. This is one of those rare occasions where the food is just as good now as it was in my teenage years. Delivery to Kingsteignton was nice and quick too. Cheers Double Luck!! 5* from us.

Just Perfect. King Prawn Curry and Singapore Chowmein were spot on. Delicious. Fresh. Prawn crackers tasty. And all delivered with a smile. We highly recommend.

In all of my life I have never smelt or tasted anything quite like this food. I don’t like slandering businesses but this genuinely needs looking into. Someone is going to be seriously ill if what we received this evening is the norm. The lady on the phone was more than accommodating with our refund so at least the customer service is where it needs to be but the food is genuinely horrendous. We unfortunately won’t be back and I hope the chef/owners do something about the quality/smell of the food that is being produced in that kitchen. As a starter for 10, Curry should not be grey.

I gave up on 'Chinese takeaways' in the 90's. Too salty. Too greasy and too cooked. I can't stand soggy veg. This was soooo for from that I got emotional! Had the Veggie Chow Mein and Bean Curd in Satay Sauce. Stunning!!! The chips are to die for and the young woman behind the counter was friendly, engaging and witty. Top marks to all!

Terrible special curry and spare ribs, chicken ( well it was listed as chicken) was tiny processed cubes, sauce was harsh watery and bitter. We used to really enjoy their special curry but has changed totally. Spare ribs had a red sauce which had no taste and was like water. Will not visit again or recommend.

Thought to try as new owners. Horrible gelatinous sauce meant to be chicken satay! No taste of peanut at all!!!! ! Worst ever. Sweet and sour king prawn- tiny prawns all batter , disappointing sauce. Food wasn’t even hot !!! Food home in 3 mins so no excuse. Truly awful!!!!!!

I had a take away last night, seen double luck deliver now so thought I’d try it. It was shocking! There was that much grease in the spring roll I was physically sick! The meat in the curry was so chewy I couldn’t eat it.chicken balls were reheated hard and flat, rice was burnt £24 fine the drain the whole lot went in the bin. Stay clear if this place

Ordered 4 chicken dishes 2 tasted like chicken the other two, well I can’t make up my mind what it was. My wife left hers I took the so called chicken out of mine. The takeaway which we were looking forward too cost 51 quid and 30 quid of that went in the bin. The name says it all Double Luck in if you get meat or not.

What ever you may read take it from me I know great food this place is simply wonderful . The sweet and sour balls were amazing the crisp batter nice and thin but ful lol seasoning .the chicken inside was so generous and the sauce was perfect in balance along with there egg fried rice light and fluffy .there prawn crackers I could tastee just cooked .I have tried Chinese many times and the last one was in kenton chi a restaurant it was like eating from Mitchelin in chi top class and even though they sadly left chi they have a takeaway in dawlish that is also spoken of to high class called mai lai . But tonight I have to give a massive shout to double luck and the service was brilliant . Please don't change ypur chef or the recipee it is truly superb a great asset to newton abbot

Takeaway was horrid. All the same colour and very salty!

On holiday nearby and had a lovely takeaway from here 2 years ago so decided to have it again. Think it was even better than last time! Never seen smoked chicken on a menu other than our local in Wales so was chuffed to see it here, and it was delicious. So much beef in the beef & black bean. Gorgeous chips. Special fried rice had big chunks of meat all the way through it, not just on top. Only minor negative was paying for prawn crackers but our order was big enough to get a free bag - no big deal, but would have liked to have been told there was no need to order one. We never finish one bag so there’s a lot left over tonight! Will definitely come here again on our next trip to the area though, took a menu to keep handy for next time! And have added photos, couldn’t find the menu anywhere else online!

Double Luck - triple yuck! No luck for me I'm afraid... I thought I'd give them a try as my usual Chinese takeaway is about 20 mins away but I was passing through at the station. That's £17 that may well be going straight down the toilet. In theory a 3-in-1 box of fried rice, chips and curry sauce sounds like a winner, however as you can see from the pics it left a lot to be desired - soggy chips and curry sauce that taste like satay and pineapple - very bizzare to say the least and a shame as I was happy to see a Chinese takeaway doing beancurd. However this was also a bit of a disaster but OK if you like chewing on slippers, however I'm not a dog. I honestly hate giving bad reviews and wish I didn't have to but unfortunately my money likes to vent. Shame.

Used to be brilliant but as they never delivered we didn’t really use them so much. However things have changed and we got a menu through that now says the deliver so instead of the usual Hoi Shan we opted to try this. We tried ordering through the app but was useless it offered 4.30 and 4.45 delivery however it seems like they don’t actually start till 5 so phoned up and a lovely helpful lady took our order. Unfortunately that experience was the only highlight of the worst Chinese meal I’ve ever had. We ordered crispy garlic butter prawns. Without doubt the most horrendous sour tasting and smelling thing I’ve tried. We had the smoked chicken that I’ve never seen on any Chinese menu before except the all you can eat in Torquay so we were really looking forward to it. The chicken other than tasteless was fine but it was covered with a handful of granulated sugar type substance which was fowl. The fried rice was ok, the chips were over cooked and bland m, bbq sauce flavourless, the 2 curries not as they used to be and lacked flavour and the salt and pepper chicken missing chilli salt and pepper. Some items arrived cold and the big pancake roll tasted like the bean sprouts were fermented / gassy taste. I really don’t like sh******* on a business and my reviews are always honest. This meal was terrible. I hope they do better and I’m sure they do but it will be the last time that is use these guys.

Best chinese ever. Tried so many over years but tried Double luck on recomendation and never looked back. Only downfall was they didnt deliver. Drove past tonight and see the sign in the window that they deliver. Couldn't get parked so went home to phone order. Lovely lady answers the phone to take your order and confirms your order before taking payment. Told about an hour for delivery. Order arrived 40 minutes later and piping hot. Would give 10 stars if i could

food was amazing cannot fault any aspect! the curry was very fragrant and really good with the salt and chilli chips. Black bean beef was a generous portion, flavours were nice and beef was cooked to perfection. The satay skewers were also really good with the delicious satay sauce and the butterfly king prawns were HUGE and ever so crispy with the sweet chilli dip. Also changed there prawn crackers to the thicker ones which is much better than the old ones they used to have! having tried many takeaways around Devon and in bath this has been the best one yet! will definitely be back, good job!

Having gone to this Chinese for decades and they could not be beaten. we have had about 4 in the last 3 months. the first was ok. now they are terrible. the egg fried rice has no egg. the chips and Chicken balls are overcooked....

Usually I get the special fried rice, noodles and curry from Double Luck and walk to the other Chinese just to get aromatic duck and sesame prawn toast as my daughter loves them, as they didnt use to sell it but now they HAVE ADDED...

I ordered one of the duck dishes and it was totally awful. No flavour , tough meat more fat than anything. Watery tasteless base . Ordered fried noodles and these were like rubber bands. I’ve tryed several dishes from here and the standards have dropped...

Normally very good however on this occasion food was cold not their usual standards.

In these uncertain times, it is still nice to know the food and prompt service for this takeaway is very good. Phoned our order in food was ready to pick up in 20 minutes. Food was hot and very tasty

Special chow mein was fairly good but the other four dishes we ordered were mediocre at best, Lady serving was pleasant enough and it was freshly cooked. but the food is just not great. There is a lot of compeition on this road.

I don’t know how Chinese people can get a Chinese meal so wrong. We normally go to Kingsteignton but they were closed. Have been to Double Luck many years ago and it was fine but this was absolutely dreadful.

I've only tried the special chow mein so far but for that it certainly is the best in town.

Just want to start by saying that I have always used double luck but tonight was the last time I paid 14.80 for a load of grease and no taste, mushrooms were old, I phoned up to make a complaint to the manager and she wouldn't speak to me and got her staff to instead to deal with e complaints instead to me that says it all

Appalling customer service. The restaurant appear to be incapable of taking an order correctly. Incapable of checking orders. Incapable of half decent communication. They got my order wrong. Admitted to this offered a free meal and then withdrew this over. They failed to seeing issue...

Shame really for such an established business of 40 years, Service and attitude poor, followed by below average food, rice not fresh & very little meat, sauce was minimal and overall taste was lacking in both dishes. Sorry but I wouldn’t order again

Googled Chinese takeaways while on holiday in ipplepen near Newton abbot,found this Chinese had highest ratings,drove 3 mile ordered our Chinese popped to mc,ds for kids went back n collected, got back to holiday place,food still red hot even chips,beef was very tender we enjoyed our meals very much..only fault I forgot to get menu for next time.........

Probably can say the best Chinese in Newton Abbot. First time I have been hear for a long while and it was delicious, just love there pancake rolls, it's a pity they don't deliver.

I know it's a takeaway but what a disappointing experience. The girl who took my order was completely disinterested and sullen to the point of being offensive. The food was dreadful. Batter cooked to concrete, soggy rice. Will never go there again.

Always great food full of flavor best curry sauce by far

The beef in my chilli beef was a tough as leather, and the flavour of the sauce was like old gravy, reheated twenty times. The Chow mein was heavy and boring in flavour too.

Just bought a portion of salt and pepper chicken, it is not at the standard of what I expected, small, crispy batter with hardly a string of chicken breast. I also got a portion of sweet and sour chicken. Bit more chicken in this one but still appalling, found it mostly sour, sharp. I spent 13 quid wasnt worth my money. Think I'm gonna stay with China garden.

Not for me again. Far to much oil. Had a vegetable curry & boiled rice. The rice was perfect but sadly the curry was not what I expected at all. First impression was that it was nice as I ate a huge mushroom which I love them so that was lovely, but then I noticed the oil separation from the curry sauce which almost ended in a full oil slick. Honestly I have never in all my years of enjoying curries ever known that amount of yellow oil separation! Maybe its just a different way of cooking it but personally its not for me. I had a few more mouthfulls from the middle but got scared of the during the night tummy time. 2 Zantac & large water it was for me 😲

I've ordered food on several occasions and always inconsistent in quality. Pancake roll and sweet and sour- simple you think, but a huge stodgy gloopy mess inside, 2 prawns and two small pieces of meat, overcooked on outside and watery undercooked inside. It doesn't get...

Not our usual Chinese, but still nice food.

This was our 1st visit to this takeaway. We were visiting my poorly Mum and hadn't eaten all day. Frankly, I would rather not eat for days, rather than experience the 'food' that we ordered. It was all deep fried but soggy, fatty, additive polluted, foul food. We binned the lot...it was inedible. I only hope we are not really ill after the small amount we tried. By the way, I have never seen a spring roll the size of a small brick...yuk is polite.

Always love there food proper food

Had a mixed curry..2 weeks previously was really tasty...and sweet & Sour chicken ... so went back Sat..ordered Beef & Tomato...beef was tough and sauce was watery like Soup.no taste..horrible..Sczewan Chicken...again was watery no taste. Had no pancake rolls. So ordered spring rolls ...soggy not crispy horrible meal....

Our regular Chinese was closed for family holiday so decided to try a different one what a huge mistake our food was the most discusting array of reheated stodge I have ever eaten well I say eaten myself and my partner couldn’t eat it the ribs were dry and definitely reheated the chow mien was stodge the pancake roll was a lump of batter with waste inside couldn’t even cook the chips properly totally disappointed and annoyed will never get food from here again five star reviewers need their taste buds tested take a tip and don’t waste your money

The best "special curry" in the world - I need say no more.

Been comming here for years, food is always tasty large quantities and reasonably priced. Some times they have a long queue, dont be put of the que moves fast and a long queue is because they serve great food

Double Luck Kitchen provides a standard array of oriental dishes which are cooked with fresh and good quality ingredients. The portions are MASSIVE and you always feel full afterwards compared to the other takeaways in the town. The chips are amazing, chunky and always crispy. All of the dishes are all well seasoned and very tasty. Also incredibly cheap compared to other Chinese Takeaways. The girls behind the counter are always lovely, well educated on dietary requirements and the dishes themselves; and Kim the owner deserves the world for how hard her and her husband work. If only they did delivery, they would make a mint!
