Food was completely bland, tasteless and watery and was simply one of the worst ever Chinese takeaways that I’ve ever eaten at. Then went to call up to complain and get a refund only for the owners to tell us that that our choices of dishes were full of flavour and to deny everything. The only good point was that they agreed to a partial refund if we brought the food in. Then the owner/chef kicked off, got aggressive and argued that there was nothing wrong with the food. This went on for at least another 10 minutes, he claimed he has been cooking for 50 years and that and it was, “just our preference”. We asked time and time again to taste it and they refused. We also tried reasoning with them only for the chef to get more aggressive and eventually told us to, “Go back home”. So I said we will be more than glad to. Old Haka from Hakaryu needs to stop serving bland rubbish food to people and not acknowledging what he’s doing. UPDATE: WOOHOO! So glad that old haka has shut up shop and a new business has taken over 🥂🍾

The Meal was average. Had a long wait for the food. There were only two people in front of me. Rice was sticky. You would expect more for what you pay. Small portions of rice. Lacking beef in the crispy beef, mainly onion and the same with the Hong Kong sweet and sour chicken (in this case loads of carrot). Also check you have all your food before you leave. We got back to our apartment to find items missing.

Well we're to start. Don't eat here! Food is awful . Tasteless, rubbery and just not worth the money. My review may seem harsh. But sometimes the truth can be harsh.

Tried this Chinese to see what it was like while staying in Dawlish Warren, so glad we did, I found the food delicious, and price reasonable, can watch the chef cook your food while you wait pleasant lady who serves, cannot fault the food we ordered, in fact we ordered again week later before we went home, will definitely visit again when in Dawlish Warren next time. 👍🏻

While we were staying local at a camp site, we decided to have a takeaway one night on looking at local takeaway we came across Hakaryu. On entering we saw that they take cash only but the staff stated ‘we accept card’ On ordering our food everything was catered for such as no veg. Everything is reasonably priced and we did not have to wait long even though this was cooked fresh while we waited. On getting the food back to our accommodation we noted how nice everything was to which this actually tasted much nicer than when we have a takeaway when at home. We have highly recommend these to our family and friends who also visit the area regularly. Thank you both, see you again when we are in the area!

Lovely food very enjoyable and very reasonably priced which is not always the case in tourist area's, It is cash only so be prepared but worth it for great chinese meal.

We used to use this place regularly a few years ago but the food was not the best but decided to try again but where do I start, Tonight we tried the spare ribs in salt and chilli and must say they were not spare ribs at all, no meat on them at all but credit the taste was beautiful. Beef curry and chips was actually flavoursome but the chips were rock hard. Fried broccoli in oyster sauce again was was full of flavour as well as the chicken in green pepper and black bean sauce so not all negative..

Great food, really good portion sizes and really tasty! It's great being able to see food being cooked too.

Lovely friendly service, open kitchen so you can see your food being cooked and most importantly the food was absolutely delicious.

Thought we would try here as really didn't want the usual Chips with everything meals from takeaways/pubs in the area In honesty we were not impressed The ribs were fairly tender but otherwise the barbeque sauce it was in was like pure oil!!! it literally had no taste to it and was like a greasy oil sauce, I didn't even eat the curry as tried 1 fork of the sauce and was not impressed House special rice was not too bad luckily but I would not use the place again as really not impressed and honestly thought it was the worst Chinese takeaway we have ever had

June 2023, ordered beef chow mein; bloody tasty. September 2023, ordered again; bloody tasty... Service, not the best, very abrupt, which took away the atmosphere, but the food has been excellent. It may be our chosen dish, and other reviews were putting me off, but I have no regrets - good noodles!

Not good. Lady behind counter very abrupt and rude. Trying to get order and out shop asap. Food watery tasteless and meatless bland overpriced dire shot Wish I’d gone next door instead but family wanted to try this as on holiday. Never ever again for me. I read reviews too so many tasters before me can’t be that wrong. Such a shame. As prime location and there get by with me my family and hundreds of other other suspect holiday makers making there money. As I can’t see locals coming here many times like we use ours at home. Delicious cuisine from Hong Kong that we thoroughly enjoyed. We placed a substantial order and the friendly chef treated us with complimentary crackers and chilies. I don't think I've ever written a food review but I feel obliged to warn people. I've eaten Chinese takeaways a plenty over the years from many towns and can honestly say this is one of the very worst. Special sczechuan was awful it tasted like they'd used a tomato cup a soup as a sauce, the chilli and garlic dish was barely spicy and so bland, the soft noodles were equally bland, the sweet and sour sauce was a tiny portion like a regular beans size in a chippy and runny like water in fact the portions weren't great full stop and as for the chips they seemed like yesterdays warmed back up. If I could give zero stars I would have. My advice is steer well clear, I'd honestly prefer a pot noodle!

It was great lasted year we was looking forward to havin it but this time its gone down hill no taste to the food dont taste like Chinese aswell wasted of money...we wont be havin one again..

Awful food , chicken and sweetcorn soup was like water , fried rice was awful , and the king prawn curry had literally no flavour!

Horrid tasteless food that makes you poorly. Chicken curry if it is chicken in watery sauce. Just avoid or have plenty of toilet paper.

Food tasteless, watery sweet and sour, pink chicken balls, manky beef.

Absolutely awful, have never had such a bad Chinese ever! We visited as we were staying locally at a caravan site. We had a set meal and on getting it home all of it tasted bland with no distinction between the dishes. The sweet and sour pork balls were pink in the middle (we didn't eat any) and after a few mouthfuls we chucked the whole lot away! The store had closed so we couldn't complain directly. Total waste of money - Avoid at all costs!

Just bought special chow menu with a portion of chips. Good portion size however I expected the chow menu to contain prawns chicken char Sui pork and beef like at home (north east uk) but it was dry and oily to taste no flavour and meat? Bits of what looked like spam, tiny pieces of chicken and half a dozen of the tiniest shrimps. Very disappointed

If I could go no star I would,we waited 25 minutes in the shop for our order, sweet n sour chicken and egg fried rice, the chicken was good the rice was so dry I couldn't swallow it. the wife had chicken curry fried noodles and was sick and hour later but avoided food poisoning. Visit at your own risk

Had a meals from here 4 times in the last year and have always been very pleased. Good quality fresh ingredients and cooked on time by telephone order. Will use again.

Had roast chicken and bean sprouts, really tasty. My other half had a Singapore chow main which was hot and spicy, full of flavour.

I read the bad reviews but when I was walking past the shop there was a queue of 6 people outside and 3 inside so the following day I collected a meal should have taken notice of the reviews one of the worst Chinese meals I have had chicken fried rice no taste mushrooms in a watere sauce curry sauce and chips the same no free prawn crackers save your money

We got food a few times from here and it was always lovely, wait times are not long and the prices are similar to what I would normally pay in the Midlands. Nice to have something different from just chippies, so very happy it was here

Cartoons only half full with very little meat, however if you like onions and peppers, you'll love it here. Every dish seemed watered down and not 'saucy'...even the sweet and sour sauce! Overall, overpriced for this food (seems they're using their location well) and the woman serving, was very rude. Will not coming here again.

Wish we had read the reviews before we ordered as the general theme is that the food here is tasteless, which was also unanimous between my wife and I. Eating here must be like having Covid because you can't taste anything. Worst Chinese I've ever had, wish I'd bought myself a frozen pizza instead.

I had sweet and sour chicken with fried rice and chips. The sweet and sour sauce was hot water with red colouring in. Chips were rock hard. The batter was soggy. Wost Chinese I have ever had. Even my dod would not eat if ended up in the bin.

Order was wrong. Ordered a beef dish and got chicken, the other dish was meant to be sweet and sour chicken Hong Kong style. Both dishes were tasteless, the sauce in both tasted the same. Rice was stodgy. Completely ruined our night, ended up throwing it away

So all the years we have been going to Dawlish Warren we have never had a problem or a bad meal from Hakaryu! We try all sorts of dishes on the menu depending on eating mood. On our experience we would highly recommend Hakaryu.

8 of us come here for holiday and though to order this omg never ever I try this before it was amazing food well cooked and right we enjoyed it all the way and the delivery driver was 18 minutes early we’ll done u guys keep it up

Unfortunately staff were quite rude and service was poor. But the food was even worse, everything appeared watered down and absolutely tasteless, sauces were literally water consistency, and dishes were heavy on the (tasteless) veg and not much else. Vital ingredients missing from many classics. Nd even the chips were soggy. Wouldn't visit again.

Is this place 5 star? No Is this place the best chinese ever? No Is this place better than your usual local chinese? No However we had a take away of our usual we had mixed chow mein, chicken curry, sweet chilli beef and bean sprouts. The food was also reasonably priced. I wasn't keen on the chilli beef but everything else was acceptable and edible. When I first saw the reviews I was worried but I thought if its bad we will just bin it. But luckily it wasn't bad the lady behind the till was not very talkative. So I choose to wait outside. You can watch the chef cook the food. Plenty of other people were ordering from there. If you are lucky you can park outside. We woud be good to update some of the signs outside as it says cash only and they have a card machine. And maybe if you spend over so much include free prawn crackers.

Had a some from these guys this evening, freshly cooked , open kitchen, the master chef in action was a wonder to see, the food was amazing, highly recommend, if you fancy some Chinese food in the area, you won't go wrong here, well done guys

We visit Dawlish Warren several times a year and always have a takeaway from Hakaryu. Sadly this week the food was awful but I think it is purely down to the cooking oil that is used is well past its "use by date" and tainted the food with an old greasy oily taste that was very unpleasant. The whole takeaway is now looking very tired and dirty, if you look up at the compares they are covered with dirty greasy covering and I think if they were inspected there is no doubt they would loose the hygiene rating. It's a real shame as this takeaway is run by a couple who work hard and have produced some good food. But now, it's simply attention to detail and standards have really declined. I only hope things improve again but gir now, and until they do, we will be going elsewhere.

Wholey disappointing! Mixed starters, bbq ribs, chicken and sweet corn soup, egg fried rice. No full mains there, but enough "standards" to judge against many other Chinese takeaway meals we have had. Never had a meal so consistently tasteless (and one of us lost their sense of taste with Covid a few months earlier, so we had a benchmark!). Seems not a grain of seasoning had graced any of the food. Even the seaweed, (which is basically suppposed to be salty cruch) just tasted of soggy cabbage. BBQ sauce had no sweetness or tang, more like a bland gravy. The soup was thin and flavourless. Even the fried rice had no flavour, or texture, whatsoever. I'd say avoid, but its a captive audience on the Warren as there is no real competition. Would much rather the owners started caring and tasing what they are selling. Loved it a couple of years ago. Not sure what's gone wrong...

It was my first Chinese, for several years, and I was very pleased with my meal. I asked for King Prawn Cantonese, which they cooked especially for me, as it wasn't on the menu. My brother was pleased with his King Prawn dish too, and what really surprised me, was the size of the Roast Chicken, that my father devoured, but was unable to finish, as the portion was so large. The prices are a bit dearer, than in our home town, which is to be expected, being a seaside resort, They close at 9.30pm, and don't take cards either, by the way.

There is a sign saying cash only, went to the only cashpoint to get cash ( chargeable) and then when returned we saw them taking card payments. The food wasnt nice at all. BBQ and sweet and sour sauces were as thick as water. I had crispy beef that was the most tasteless dish I have ever had. My husband had bbq ribs that he couldnt even eat as they were so chewy. Wouldnt return or recommend

Excellent food and very good service

So disappointed!!! Been coming to Dawlish Warren for 2 decades and our usual Chinese takeaway never disappointed until tonight. Not only was the food bland and watery AND we just spent over £40, I found a grey hair in the crispy seaweed as chopsticking through!!! Disgusting Mr Chef, it so looked like one of yours. How would I know? We were watching you complete our order. Not recommended.

Be prepared for a long wait and after (35 mins) I took my order back to where we were staying to find an incorrect order. Just an ok takeaway.

Although we have been coming to Dawlish warren for years we have never tried the Chinese ,So this time we thought we would give it a try . Cooked fresh in front of you and only waited about 20 minutes. Food was a good takeaway standard and we all enjoyed it the only thing was the portions are not as big as we would normally get back home but definitely worth a visit.

Rude staff who were clearly stressed and busy, but not busy enough to spend some time shouting at us when ordering. Food was bland the prawn toast was flat and looked like it had been cooked for an hour. 3 meals and over £30 quid. Then no card in 2021. With all the caravan sites around they don't need to rely on return custom as thousands of new people come into the area every Saturday. I had a call to say my business was on fire and this Chinese was still the low point of the day..... We might not go back!

Standard of food very poor. We ordered spare ribs burnt over cooked , Szechwan beef very stringy and sauce watery and was spiced with dried chilli flakes . They did not pack prawn crackers which were paid for . Dishes were on average £8 each which is expensive for the poor quality received .

Absolutely rubbish! Don't accept card which in this day and age is madness! Food was bland and boring then to top it off the portion size was disappointing to say the least never known a Chinese not fill the container. We are local and wouldn't normally use them but all others were closed this Monday so went there. Try Mei Lai or Hoi shing in Dawlish avoid this place.

So rude to customers, we had been waiting outside for atleast 30 mins and there were people behind us as well there was a woman in front who ordered for 20 people we went in to order and waited another 5 mins and was later told that they weren't taking more orders in a rude manner we then we're shouted at that no more orders and he kept raising his voice would not go again

Here on holiday and tried the Chinese on our 2nd night. Prices are expensive, portions acceptable size, but the food is so bland, it's tasteless! If you closed you eyes and were feed the meals you wouldn't know what you were eating. Never known anything like it. The sweet n sour sauce is very thin and runny with strong smell of vinegar. Simply the worse Chinese I've tried.

First night in dawlish so decided to get take out . worst Chinese I have ever had and I have tried allot of Chinese. had to throw it away . avoid at all cost I have no idea how they are still trading .

We ordered by phone and picked up which all worked well. The food was very greasy and watery without much flavour sadly. It was very busy and they looked run of their feet, but it was a lot of money for food that didn't have much taste.

Ordered our dinner to collect, we were told cash only we tried to get cash at 5 different locations they didn't do cash back and there were now cash points with cash, so I went to the counter to tell them to cancel the order which I was then told I'd have to go sainsburys to get cash which is a car drive away after already walking round for 30 minutes trying to get cash this was not going to happen. My suggestion would be stop tax evasion get a card machine and take take both payment types. I'm sure taking payment for our £50 order via card machine would be better then wasting food and loosing money. Will not be ordering each time we return

Very poor meal today. Chicken undercooked. Family meal went in the bin. Very expensive lesson will not be returning

This visit all veggie food chosen, cooked fresh in an immaculate clean kitchen, very covid secure. Food was fresh and tasty , decent amounts and reasonable price.

Portion sizes are right food is freshly prepared and cooked in full view not a single problem with this place staff are friendly has well

called in an order and was told to collect within an hour, once i arrived at the take way (1 hour later) the lady behind the counter told me in no uncertain terms that i was lying and i had never called the order in, this was my first time at this restaurant and i will not be returning. I will also be telling ALL Friends and family (who visit or live in Dawlish warren) not to use this establishment as i think the attitude of the lady behind the counter was horrendous.

This is the best Chinese I’ve ever had! Very tasty and fresh and staff are lovely. You can see them cooking up the dishes when you collect so very clean too. One dish was chicken chow mein which had nice chunky chicken.

I can only guess they have set their sights on serving 'one off' tourists as the food is very bland and wouldnt encorage a repeat visit. For example the special fried rice had sandwich ham in and hardly any roast pork.

Really excellent, tasty meal for 2 from Hakaryu Chinese Takeaway. Loses 1 star because they only accept cash payment, even during a global pandemic.

Thought we would give this Chinese another try, and sadly it’s not improved at all. Prawn toast had a hair in it and no sesame seeds (see photo for what prawn toast looks like without sesame seeds!). Paid £31 for 2 soups, prawn toast, spare ribs, a chow Mein and a starter and it is really not worth the money at all. Don’t think we will bother returning.

We had 2 excellent meals whilst on holiday nearby. The portions were a good size. They were really tasty yet not over-seasoned and no obvious MSG. We phoned both orders through and both ready at the time we were told. Not perhaps as cheap as you could get at home, but excellent quality and worth every penny.

visited whilst staying in Dawlish Warren ordered chips and curry sauce ×2 £9.50 and the chips were frozen chips. TOTAL RIP OFF.. The curry sauce was nice chips obviously tasteless. They do cook in front of you but jeeze no need for those prices at all.

We had a very good take-away which was all cooked in front of us, they have nothing to hide. Very tasty chow mein, ribs, special fried rice and lemon chicken. They couldn't have squeezed any more rice in the tub if they tried.

Here on my holiday for a few days and really fancied a Chinese takeaway on my last night, walked in and studied the menu before placing my order and after being totally shocked by the prices for each dish I walked out and went and brought fish n chips.Wanted noodles and pork balls and would of cost me £13 & not even rice included. Thought Robing Hood was dead !

Lovely food all cooked fresh,one of the best

Grabbed a takeaway from here while on our holidays. It was very busy and parking was a little difficult. It was very busy with lots of phone orders and people waiting for food but it was well worth the wait. It’s an open kitchen so you can see your food being cooked and when we got it back to our accommodation we were not disappointed. Portion sizes where good and all our dishes where excellent. I would recommend the spring rolls and Singapore chow mien although all our dishes were tasty.

Absolutely avoid like the plague! Missed dishes off the order, owners slipped up and admitted this but still wanted charge us. The dishes were half full, only 6 raps with quarter duck which was not quarter duck. But mainly the food was vile and reheated!!

Not very good, overpriced and less in the containers than other Chinese takeaways.

Used this takeaway twice during the holiday.first night excellent great quality and portions but the pancake rolls were quite empty we returned later in the week to place a smaller order and were greeted with disdain.

Decent Chinese with big portions, don't deliver though so have to collect. But was ready very quickly. Ideally situated for Golden sands holiday park.
