We stayed at the hotel and enjoyed an evening meal as well as a breakfast and we’re very impressed with both. The quality of the produce is amazing. We both opted for smoked haddock risotto as a starter followed by sirloin steak with hassle back potato mushrooms and a dish of fresh veg. The steak came with peppercorn sauce but as I didn’t want the sauce I was offered other sauces that weren’t on the menu. Unfortunately by the time it came to the dessert we were both too full but what the other guests had looked lovely. Would definitely eat here again. The restaurant is quite small so if you’re planning to stay there it may be better to book the restaurant when making you’re accommodation booking. It is also open to non residents. The owners Zoe and Chris are both lovely people and nothing is too much trouble.

We had a three night break in May 22 from start to finish we had an excellent stay. Breakfast was exceptional varied choice to suit all. We had an evening meal in the restaurant, that was also exceptional with great service. The hotel decor is in with the keeping of the period of the Victorian era. Very comfortable bed, great room , on the whole a exceptional hotel with great hosts and staff. Highly recommend.

We visited Matlock Bath with friends and decided to book Hodgkinsons restaurant based on a recommendation. We certainly weren’t disappointed. The food was amazing and beautifully presented. It was all cooked to perfection and tasted so fresh and absolutely delicious. The whole evening provided a memorable experience giving you the feeling of being transported back to the Victorian era. I have to admit upon arriving I wasn’t sure what to expect but we were made to feel so welcome, served delicious food and received exceptional service. This restaurant is definitely worth a visit.

We booked a table as we weren’t staying in the hotel - recommend this as they save tables for guests just in case. Prepare for a surprise when you walk in - it’s different, looks antiquated with Victorian era feel.. we were shown into the lounge to wait for our table. It was a little wait for our meal.. but worth the wait. Nice bread on the table - always a good way to keep starvation away - and our food was delicious and plentiful. Lamb chop with new potatoes, and trout was really tasty. Two veggie options were good, chose the butternut squash with a variety of extras and a little slice. This was excellent. Extra veggies arrived - cauliflower carrots and mange tout - simple but spot on and tasty. Sticky toffee pudding all round was superb - everything home made. All in all - highly recommended.

We stayed in the hotel for two nights (excellent) and had a meal in the restaurant the second night as they close on Sundays. Both service and quality of food was great and very reasonably priced. I can't understand how this restaurant is not number one in Matlock Baths as ,with the exception of a Thai restaurant, is the only one serving proper food, if you do not want "fish & chips"!! It probably says more about the reviewers rather than the restaurants.

Our 2 nights stay was quite an experience and we were amazed by it. We loved the old building with its labyrinthic corridors up to the top floor where our large, luminous room, overlooking the main road was located, the Victorian decorations with myriad of details we discovered every time we had a look around. What was really unnerving was the fact that everything was clean and looked new and old at the same time - it did not feel like an old place, it felt as we were transported back in time (not completely, but as much as you can expect – the place is electrified and it has wifi, the gaslighting was replaced 😉). Excellent bed and bathroom, covid secure measures taken in the whole building, tasty breakfast and dinner. Zoe & Chris, the owners, put a lot of love and work in upkeeping this historic building, hotel and restaurant. We thank them for the great hosting and the suggestions for eating out and walk routes in the area. We apologise we did not realise Monday after Easter holidays was a quiet night, and we forced them to keep the restaurant open for dinner for the two of us only. We loved our stay and we would like to come back.

We ate dinner here twice whilst staying at the hotel. The restaurant is small in normal times; at present they are only using four tables, so do pre-book! Our first dinner was very pleasant, well cooked and presented food, but nothing particularly outstanding. On the second day, my husband had the lamb (which he said was literally melt in the mouth) and I had the stuffed butternut squash, which was quite honestly one of the best dishes I have ever eaten!! As with the hotel itself, you are treated with friendly, attentive service at all times. Not cheap but worth a visit.

Had dinner with wife, daughter and I. We were the only people there initially. Then just 2 other tables of guests later on. The soup amount was very small and the bread with the smoked mackerel a bit crusty. The vegetables and trout were well cooked. But at £72 for 2 adults and a child it was overpriced.

My wife and I ate there last Saturday. We had booked for 18:30 (the earliest possible) and were shown to a lovely table by the window and beside a radiator which was a bonus as the night was chilly. On the surface, the menu appeared traditional, but the food was splendidly prepared and presented. Our constant fear nowadays is the prospect of 'nouvelle cuisine', but not a bit of it here: portions were on the generous side without being brutish and destroying the elegant ambience. An interstitial sorbet was served between the starter and the main course. My wife had the chicken and I, the pork - both excellent, with mouth-watering sauces and a small dish of 'al dente' vegetables. We shared an Eton Mess to finish. The price was £28 for two, £32 for three courses - not cheap, but we only had one glass of wine (I was driving) which kept the cost down (the wine list looked fine - cheapest bottle £19.50; only two reds served by the glass). The service was friendly and efficient. Covid restrictions applied, so the small dining room actually felt spacious though still intimate: there were only two other couples dining when we were there. Thoroughly recommended, and we shall return.

Just returned from an amazing 7 night stay at this wonderful small hotel(only 8 rooms), but all the better for it I feel. We were looked after like royalty by the owners,Zoe and Chris and all the staff. (Special mention to Lindsay). The food, all cooked to perfection by Chris was exemplary and the variety across the week's stay for breakfast was more than ample. But an absolute must, and certainly a highlight is dinner. A brilliantly attentive and equally delicious experience. An accomplished restaurant in its own right! Add to this some brilliant hosting skills from Zoe, and beautiful original featured guest rooms ,and what you have (especially in the current world situation) is a relaxing and enjoyable break which doesn't involve packing your passport. Cannot recommend highly enough !

A great three days in the delightful oddity that is Matlock Bath, which is virtually a lovely seaside resort in the middle of the country! The hotel is comfy, friendly and homely rather than luxurious and does exactly what it says on the tin. Excellent breakfast and for the evening we ate in (which I’d advise as I suspect it’s the best of fine dining you will find in Matlock Bath) we had a first rate meal. Room was thankfully quiet, due to effective secondary glazing, and the only thing missing was a bath but we knew that in advance so not a quibble. Friendly and welcoming hosts always available and we would recommend without a second thought

The atmosphere was relaxed from beginning to end and the service friendly and efficient throughout. Food is very good, an interesting menu with some creative combinations. I would go into more detail but I think the menu may soon be switching from summer to autumn. The wine list looks good but we opted for the house Cabernet Sauvignon and were delighted. We will fondly remember our informal chats to Zoe and Chris, the owners, and the rest of the staff here who do their utmost to make you feel welcome. My only (weeny) gripe would be the background music; a greater variety of styles might add even more atmosphere to this lovely restaurant setting.

We both chose the pork for main course. The meat was beautifully cooked and the sauce declicious. The vegetables were cooked to perfection. We both chose the Prosecco Eton Mess for dessert, which was also delicious. The only very minor point we can add is that the bottle of prosecco we chose for our meal could have been slightly more chilled. Had dinner here on Valentine's Day and was extremely impressed with everything about this superb restaurant and boutique hotel. The menu was well thought out and very tempting.Upon arrival we were served with a selection of chocolate, balsamic and peppered strawberries and a glass of bubbly in the beautifully appointed and comfortable drawing room which had a blazing real fire as it's focal point. An 'Amuse Bouche' of artichoke heart, spinach croquette with lemon aioli was served prior to your chosen starter. There was an excellent choice of first course which ranged from a parsnip, sage and white bean soup to a smoked haddock brandade cake with lime yoghurt dressing. Truly something for every taste. After a champagne sorbet the main courses ranged from the usual offering of steak, lamb and chicken to Halibut served in a horseradish potato crust with wilted spinach and a tomato caper sauce.Pudding was also a delight with five equally tempting plates on offer including Mascarpone cannoli with a sour cherry compote to a beautiful strawberry crème brulee with homemade vanilla shortbread. The meal was a complete delight, service was efficient but unrushed and the attention to detail in presentation, a triumph. We enjoyed it so much we went back the following evening to sample yet another amazing menu.We really can't praise this place too much-it's amazing!

The building itself is around 200 years old (I forgot to ask if they knew the exact date) and is connected into the cliff behind (complete with caves). The welcome is warm, choosing from the dinner menu in a "parlour", before eating in an area with a small bar adjacent. The evening choice is simple - 2 courses for £26 or 3 for £29 - but just about enough variety if you were staying there a few days. I had the wood pigeon and mushroom bruschetta and the rack of lamb, my wife had crab & leek filo parcels and the ribeye. All delicious - and (just a matter of taste) I thought the mushrooms were a bit bland but she tasted them and thought them "very mushroomy". We didn't manage dessert but the coffee was plentiful, in a huge cafetiere.

We booked in a guests to the Hodgkinson's Hotel, knowing it had a restaurant, however not knowing the quality as we had not stayed before. We were lucky to have reserved a table for the first night as they were quite busy, and understandably so as this restaurant turned out to be a little gem. Wonderful food and service.Over the weekend we, and our friends, must have tried most of what was on offer on the menu...we could not fault a thing. The food was fresh and locally sourced where possible, it was cooked to perfection, the lamb and steaks especially so, as I do like my steaks very rare, and my offering was spot-on. The service was quick, and I did like having a drink in the lounge as the starters are prepared. We were not rushed. It was a very pleasurable experience. There is always a dilemma when giving a restaurant full marks as I fear it will become so popular they will not have space for us next time we visit. I have given them full marks and I will note that I must book early in future. For those considering staying at the hotel I can recommend the breakfast's as well.

Walking into the hotel was like going back to the 1920s. It is very quaint. The room had teapot with strainer attached and loose leaf tea.A cafetiere was also supplied with fresh coffee. The usual teabags and instant coffee were also available. The room was large and comfortable. Slippers & bathrobes were a treat for such a reasonable tariff. The breakfast was freshly cooked to order and was very niceI would recommend this hotel and I would return

Landed here by chance on a wet Monday evening 2 days ago. What. A. Find! We can only echo all the other positive comments you can read on other posts. Behind the unassuming facade you step into Victorian elegance and a genteel atmosphere that soothes and relaxes whilst you take your drinks into the lounge to choose your meal. We had the filo goats cheese parcel: light, crisp, and creamy. Our steaks were tender and tasty, and the cheese board generous and filling. The waitress was attentive and very approachable (deserves all her wages, and probably more!), and we found out the chef was on holiday and it was the owner who had cooked up the superb food! A resounding success. Our only disappointment was that living in Devon we won't get here again for some time (but we will check to make sure the chef is on his hols again lol). Thanks to all concerned for a lovely meal.

We were recommended to stay here by our good friends who have been here many times. We celebrated our friends 40th Birthday with an overnight stay, evening meal and breakfast. The evening meal was delicious, a super selection of dishes on the menu and I can highly recommend the sea bass. The breakfast was fabulous with plenty to choose from. We had a fabulous time here and all of the staff were lovely, friendly and extremely accommodating. Highly recommend staying here.

My husband and I ate in the restaurant whilst on an over night stay at the hotel. The hotel is a grade II listed property and the decor of the hotel and restaurant restaurant is of the Victorian era. We had pre dinner drinks in the parlour which is comfortable and cosy with an open fire. We had a three course meal each, both starting with a goats cheese parcel; for mains my husband had the steak with black pudding mash, I had pork medallions with mustard mash both accompanied by seasonal vegetables, and for dessert raspberry and limoncello Eton mess, and sticky toffee pudding with caramel sauce and ice cream. The food was of excellent quality (both the pork and the steak both melted in the mouth); our young waitress was superb, the tables were covered in crisp white table linen and jazz/swing music played at an appropriate level in the background; all adding to the ambiance. If we hadn't have been staying at the hotel we probably wouldn't have gone in for a meal, normally opting for a contemporary setting, however the food here really is excellent (including the breakfast) - go in through the door; you won't be disappointed!

We found this hotel restaurant by chance via a restaurant finder site, and what delight it was.Nestled in the centre of Matlock Bath the hotel has a cosy victorian feel, welcoming open fire in the sitting room, creaking floors, and lashings of wood paneling, a perfect setting for a relaxed evening meal. The menu offering was 3 courses for £29, with plenty of choice, I think this is the first time I have ever seen rabbit on the starter menu! Food was freshly prepared and full of taste and flavour and we polished off all 3 courses with ease. The hosts / staff made us feel very welcome, and talking to some residents of the hotel, the standard of service and quality of food was normal practice. At the end of our meal we were invited to see a 80 Meter Cave that runs out the back of the Hotel, great way to finish a quality night. We like this place, genuine nice people and quality good value food, we will return with friends.

We planned a suprise birthday meal here, and they couldn't have been more helpful. Menus were sent through so I could chose a selection of starters, mains and desserts, aimed specfically at the diners requirements. They agreed to do a dessert 'off menu' too. As we were 14, we had the dining room to ourselvss. The starters were delicious; goats cheese filo parcels, homemade fishcakes and rissotto - everyone enjoyed their choice.Mains didn't disappoint either; cooked to perfection, with veg to accompany. Staff were attentative, but not in our face.Desserts equally as delicious. Thanks to Leigh, the chef - it was a fab night, enjoyed by us all. We even got a suprise trip into the caves behind the hotel. Would definately come here again, and recommend to everyone.

We recently stayed at the hotel. We ate there on the first night (shame we didn't on the second night too) We had smoked haddock risotto, Omg it was delicious. We both then had sirloin steak, cooked to perfection, vegetables accompanying the meal were also cooked perfectly. Very relaxed atmosphere. We enjoyed it very much

I cannot recommend Hodgkinson's Hotel Restaurant enough. We are always guaranteed a very warm and personal welcome from owners Zoe and Chris. The period décor sets the scene and the restaurant portrays an ambiance of elegance and charm that so many other restaurants nowadays lack. From walking through the door you feel like you have walked back in time. The lounge is cosy and welcoming whilst you peruse the menu and served aperitif's. There is a great selection of dishes on offer on the menu and I am always spoilt for choice. The food is always excellent! I particularly like the goats cheese in filo pastry starter. The steaks are excellent and also the black pudding mash potato. The mains are followed by scrumptious desserts. There is also a good selection of wines. All courses are generous portions with a delicious sorbet served as a "surprise".After a very relaxed meal it is great to sit back in the lounge, have coffee and carry on chatting. It feels like you are sat in your own sitting room and we end up losing track of time (sorry Zoe and Chris). Christmas Dinner served throughout December was also excellent and we will definitely be booking that again for December 2016. Fabulous all round! Keep up the good work and we will be back to see you very soon.

While my duck was fine my husbands turkey was pre cooked reheated meat - the potatoes tasted as if they had been sitting around and then reheated the sprouts were virtually raw the parsnips also tasted as if they had been cooked the day before - overall impression reminder of old school dinners - pudding tasteless and gloopy. emailed restaurant to tell them but no reply. Husband didn't complain at time because it was a birthday treat and he didn't want to cause upset. I would not have reviewed here if they had bothered to respond to my email - not great

The hotel is like stepping back in time in a very cool way. The majority of the food was delicious, although the duck was over done to the point that it was almost inedible. The waitress was sullen, over brusque and didn't smile once at us or the other diners which was a real shame because it took the edge off what should have been a lovely evening

Straight away we were made to feel welcome through out the booking process. We pre ordered from the extensive party menu, what a choice! Venue is homely and food was excellent with the added surprise of black current sorbet between starters & mains. Chris was very informative of local sights & attractions, including a tour to see the unexpected cave adjacent to the hotel. Great experience!

Very helpful staff and welcoming. Pleasant room and comfortable bed. Could only fault the small shower, functional but just small. The food was exceptional and as far as we were concerned this is the only place to stay and eat if visiting Matlock Bath. We ate here twice on a three night stay, the peppercorn sauce served with rib eye was the best ever. We ate in the local Indian the second but returned for the third night. The rack of lamb cooked to perfection, and an unexpected surprise sorbet was welcomed. I tried three different breakfasts the full English and the vegetarian was fantastic but the kedgeree was outstanding, compliments to the chef. No one should be disappointed either for a stay or a meal. Highly recommended.

Having read the reviews, as hotel guests, we decided to stay in & dine. What a good decision! Chris & Zoe have succeeded in retaining the services of an excellent chef. We thoroughly enjoyed our 3 course (£29) dinner. Particular mention should be made of my starter - warm chicken & crispy bacon salad dressed with balsamic vinegar. And Jane's rack of lamb - the meat so tender it "melted in the mouth". Good accompanying vegetables & delicious desserts. If you are local or visiting the area, we thoroughly recommend this restaurant for those who are not fish & chip aficionados who are so well catered for in Matlock Bath!

There is a great atmosphere in this listed hotel. The decor provides so much, being like a trip back into Victorian times, but the owners, Chris and Zoe provide such a lovely welcome it's this that makes the place special. Breakfast and dinner are cooked to order and hence it's as fresh as if you were eating at home. There is a cave network that s set aside for smokers, we don't smoke but it was still an interesting place to explore, being lit and decorated to give it a trip into the unknown feel about it. If we go back to Matlock Bath we would definitely be staying here again.

Catered Hen Party weekend, we had fabulous catering for a themed evening on Friday and a formal evening on Saturday. Both evening the food was great, but the formal evening meal was stunning. The entire team were accommodating, friendly, and left no trace that they had even been in the kitchen. Highly recommend for any private dining event.

I visited with a group of 16 last night for a friends 50th birthday. The only negative I can find with our experience is that it’s made me question every five star review I’ve left previously, I need an extra star! Each dish was impeccable crafted. The recreation of familiar dishes into something beautifully creative and full of flavour. The staff were welcoming, friendly and attentive and there was a great buzz in the restaurant, without a hint of pretentiousness. All in all a perfect evening, would highly recommend.

Lovely independent bakery. We had 2 sandwiches to take away. They were very good. Ciabatta and top quality fillings for a very reasonable price. The sausage roll was amazing. Friendly service. Will definitely return when in the area again.
