We always have their speciality toast. My husband thinks that the toasted fruit bread is the best toast ever but I must disagree. The sourdough cheese and onion is perfection.

We called in here because we wanted a light snack and drink. It was a hive of activity, with people coming for takeaway and on site made bread, but also for light snacks. My husband had a toastie and I tried the cheese and onion sourdough toast. It's only small and we sat right at the back where we could see in to where they make the bread. As tables became free they filled again, so it's a popular place. Service was quick.

First visit to Hindleys. Firat thing i asked if they did plain Croissants for my son. She said not today but when i read the menu its said they do ham & cheese Croissants? I asked again and showed her the menu which is when she then said yes we do make have them. Making the order was a joke. The lady with dark brown hair was ridiculously rude and made they also my sandwich incorrectly. It was to takeaway so Its not like i could take it back to get re-made. Absolutely awful experience and very rude service. We were made to feel very uncomfortable and spoken to in a very patronising way. I shall certainly not be recommending anyone to go to Hindleys when in Lichfield.

Sign on the door indicates the café and shop are open until 4 pm at 3.05 pm. The café is in the process of closing, and cleaning up is taking place. The signage on the door is inaccurate, which is so common now in UK businesses customers come second.

Absolutely appalling service today!! I have been going to Hindleys for years. Always had really good, friendly service, until today. The young person serving me if you can call it that, obviously didn’t want to be there. They didn’t look at me and I had to ask for my order three times. After I’d paid no thank you and goodbye. Manners cost nothing and when there are so many competitors maybe some staff training is in order. I work in the service industry and would be very disappointed in my staff if this was the level of service they gave to my customers!! Off to Birds for me now.

I have had regular deliveries of bread and savoury items from the staff at Lichfield which has been much appreciated through lockdown. The staff do an amazing job, the bread and products are superb and staff are friendly and helpful. You need to give them a few days notice and they will deliver Tuesdays and Fridays. So glad I have a Hindleys in Lichfield. Thank you for all your hard work. Well worth the delivery service or visit to the shop.

The most delicious bread - taste and texture is always spot on and its keeps well too. We've been regular visitors for a few years now. We can't wait for Moseley market each month to get a couple of loaves and couple of cakes from the Hindley's stall. Also impressed with the protective measures in place due to the pandemic! Still service with a smile behind all the protective gear!!

Eager to get back to Hindleys, we went in today for a snack. Only sandwiches and toasties on the menu instead of the usual menu. Mega-spaced out tables so you felt like a leper. Food served on paper plates with disposable cutlery, paper cups for tea. £15 for 2 teas and 2 toasties ! No toilet facilities. It was dreadful. I can only think that they are doing this to save getting all the staff back from furlough as they would only need a couple of staff to serve and clean today. Other cafes are serving food on proper crockery with proper cutlery, this just took the mick, quite frankly.

I am a regular visitor to Lichfield and I always go to Hindleys. First stop, the cafe. The food is always delicious and piping hot (there may be a wait at busy times.) Snacks are freshly prepared in the cafe while light meal orders are sent to the kitchen. There is a good range available with a limited menu on a Sunday. The prices are excellent and it offers superb value for money. The staff are friendly and helpful even when incredibly busy. There are viewing panes into the bakery which are very interesting to observe while waiting a short time for the food to arrive. On leaving, bakery purchases is a must. There is a fantastic array of home-made and artisan breads. Nothing is ever stale. There is a wide rang of cakes and pastries. On the wall, is a list of course dates for bread making which is on my to do list.Hindleys was discovered by accident but is now my go to cafe every time I am in Lichfield. Personally, I recommend the cheese on toast. Sounds ordinary doesn't it? Don't be fooled. It is light and fluffy served on a choice of bakery bread with flavourful cheese. The best I have ever tasted!

I took my mother here for lunch. There was a five minute delay between the two meals being served, meaning one was cold.I tried to get the staff’s attention but they were chatting rather than attending to customers (or the many empty tables with dirty crockery on them) so I went to the counter.I was told ‘can’t she just eat hers while you wait’ I pointed out basic manners, but it seemed wasted on that particular member of staff, who agreed to refund 50% of the cost but in a way that involved begrudgingly slapping the coins on the counter. A place that has potential....With a new chef, staff, cleaner, attitude and training.

I visit Lichfield for business a lot. I have been here a few times. Once there was only 5 people in the cafe (me included) and I waited 45 minutes for a sandwich so I had to cancel it and go back to work. I decided today to go back again. I ordered a breakfast and asked could I have 2 sausages instead of 1 rasher and 1 sausage (as they have done this for me before). The woman service raised her voice and I was mad a fool of infront of other customers. She explained they had a ‘strict policy of switching items” and I explained that was weird as they had done this a week previous. As someone who works in customer service, I don’t see the problem with switching one breakfast item for another. The woman at the til was on a power trip and very rude. Over s

Nicely appointed and decorated bakers/restaurant selling lovely different types of bread, and also a separate till taking orders for food and drink. There were plenty of serving staff on, and so there wasn’t much of a wait. Although I only had a tea cake and a pot of tea, it was very nice, and they definitely didn’t sting on the butter. We go nearly every week for our breakfast treat, having tried several places for breakfast Hindleys is one of the best, the only down side I have is the teapots they are small so by the time your breakfast turns up you need to buy another pot of tea, making it a very expensive breakfast where other places have the pot teapots and lasts us all the way throughout the breakfast and they have swapped the sauce pots to paper thin cups with a small full of sauce which gets all soggy and messy. But love the breakfast and lovely bread .

" We don't have it any more " I went for the option of sandwich without Avocado.( Still charged the full price which I didn't realise until later What a disappointment. A few little scraps of pretty tasteless chicken with about half of an iceberg lettuce( presumably a poor substitute for avocado). No leaves and no low fat Caesar dressing as per the menu. Service was slow and I was short of time so could not hang around to complain. Doubt if I would have had a satisfactory answer anyway. Have purchased bread and cakes often and it’s a great bakery. Today we went for a coffee and something to eat and it can only be described as miserable. After deciding on what to eat we ordered at the counter. I forgot I was wearing my cloak of invisibility but was eventually acknowledged. The menu said”ask about our artisan toasties” so we did. Got none. Sausage sandwich then . Got none. No eggs either. That wiped out 80% of the menu 2 bacon sandwiches then and cheese on toast. 2 coffees and a hot chocolate.£18. The bacon was dry and precooked , not buttered, and when we asked for ketchup we were given a very small pot to share. All very disappointing really and not a pleasant experience. I said have you got cups and she just looked at me for a second and with an emotionless "yes" I said well I asked for cups which visibly annoyed the lady behind the counter. Lovely selection of artisan breads and other tasty treats that are all cooked fresh on the premises. I ordered an omelette but asked for it with low fat spread instead of butter and the staff member serving couldn't have been more helpful - even calling through to the kitchen to make sure they were clear on what I wanted. Great size portions, quality produce, reasonably priced and excellent staff. The only thing that could be improved in my opinion is the decor, which is a little dated, and the toilets which are located upstairs quite a way from the restaurant - however I understand they have plans for a refurb soon. Staff are helpful and get things to you as quickly as possible, but the toast queue can be slow - a bigger toaster needed? Spotless throughout, high chairs available, toilets upstairs. Wheel chair access to the cafe is OK but not to the toilets. Visibility into kitchen is clear so origins and freshness of all foodstuffs is assured. Fully recommended!!! This as really homely atmosphere, the food is excellent. The service is quick, I go in my lunch hour. They also do wonderful bread and cakes. Always consistent.

Popped in for lunch as it looked nice from the outside. Grabbed a table, Lino table covers and very cramped. We were sat 5" from another table. Food arrived after 20 mins and the jacket potato I ordered was only half a potato on a plate! Chilli in the potato was ok and side salad was ok, but overall not a great experience.

I am writing this review whilst sat waiting for my breakfast, I ordered 50 mins ago and nothing. If you're an old lady ordering a tea cake it's quite quick, anything they have to cook takes ages. At this stage even if the breakfast is amazing, it won't change my opinion. That said the bakery items are good!

popped in here to warm up after some Christmas shopping, nice pot of tea and a mince pie, lovely pastry ( bought some to take home) menu looked good as did the food being served. There are plenty of coffee and tea shops in Lichfield, its a matter of taste and where you feel comfortable especially if you are alone and this is one of them

It's a bakers with a cafe. The consistency and quality of independent shops can't be compared to the chain pubs. Good luck getting eggy bread or boiled egg and toast soldiers in a chain food pub, to say nothing of the bewildering array of cakes and pastries. Don't go if you are in a hurry, go because you want to eat good fresh food at leisure.

Called in for a quick coffee. No atmosphere. Staff were unfriendly even go as far as saying looked really miserable and unhappy. No manners or conversation. Ordered toast which arrived after I had finished my pot of tea. For a cafe and shop it was silent which was a little uncomfortable. Counted four members of staff who didn't appear to be busy however the tables remained un cleaned and the phone continually rang I nearly asked if they wanted me to answer it at one point. I try to visit local businesses as high street chains are taking over, however high street chains have it so right compared to this. I will not be visiting again.

I visited here today, very very busy. I cant complain about the food as have never had an issue. It's not pram or wheelchair friendly in the slightest. All the tables are so close together. I was the second person in with a pram and got the impression I should have walked back out.

It's not because this place has such a terrific history that it's so good. It's because they've survived by keeping their standards consistently high in the face of the mass consolidation in the high street and the fierce competition from national chains. This means that they retain a loyal customer base and deservedly so. The service - whether you're getting one of their homemade loaves or sausage rolls or splashing out on a specially decorated birthday cake is first class. They're helpful and friendly and nothing is too much trouble.Long may artisan bakers like this survive the mediocrity of the big chains that offer nothing but homogeneous fayre that is de-skilled.

Lured by the smell of freshly baked bread and cakes, we enjoyed a tasty light lunch. I was tempted by the all day breakfast but decided on a lighter bite, a tasty well cooked sausage sandwich. There are various tasty savoury pastries & cakes and daily specials. We couldn't resist coming home with some freshly baked bread which proved delicious when enjoying back home.

Was given this course as a birthday present - it was well worth it. Taken through making dough, shaping and flavouring. A delicious and filling afternoon tea - sandwiches, quiche, millionaires short bread to name but a few item. Left with 6 loaves, flour and fresh yeast. Duncan Hindley is a really inspirational tutor. Going to do the revamped artisan bread course next.

We popped in here to buy some items. It wasn't busy so we got asked straight away what we wanted. When i asked for a minute so i could see what they sold, the lady behind the counter tutted because i was making her wait. How rude. They had a good selection of breads and cakes, and having not been in here before it's nice to look to see what i wanted first without staff being pushy about it.The cakes we brought were nice, but the service was terrible. I wouldn't be visiting here again.

The modest-sized eating area is beyond the retail counter and there are windows through onto the bakery itself. The walls are covered with historic items related to this long-established local business. You choose your meal then go up to the counter to order. We were a bit surprised that some types of bread were actually unavailable, even by lunchtime.Had a couple of sandwiches, with crisps and salad. These were delicious and nicely presented although service was slightly leisurely. It has a very nice traditional feel without being 'twee' and should appeal to nostalgists.

I didn't want much for Christmas, except for a Hindleys bread baking course - which I got. The course was fantastic, both for kneading virgins and those who have already started to bake their own bread. Delivered by Duncan Hindley, we were taken through the ingredients, method of mixing and kneading, shaping of the dough and the baking. Whilst the dough was rising, we were treated to a wonderful tea of sandwiches, quiches, sausage rolls, and cakes! We all left with 6 loaves and the making for at least the same again, including fresh yeast.I would recommend this course and look forward to returning for the artisan bread course also available.

We really enjoyed our visit to the Hidleys. Beautifully produced cakes and bread with a friendly service. Coffee was good and value was fine... I would visit again to sample the wider range of treats they have to purchase.

Not the quickest of places but if your not in a rush it's so worth going too, the staff are loverly, I talk to them when I go in and they are all from different backgrounds, it's understandable that they are not the quickest a lot of them are mature women who have raised kids, the cakes are full on amazing I love popping in for a pineapple cream, they bake everything there as well, I recommend the walnut bread when they have it, if you don't have a long time just order something simple, but if you have a good 40 mins the specials they do are really good, bit pricy but worth it, 10/10 go in every time I can.
