Friend who lives in London recommended this spot and I’m so glad she did! Great atmosphere, clean and sophisticated, with friendly and knowledgeable staff. Food and drinks were delicious and our group had a wonderful time. Keep in mind that it might be busy - so check if you need a reservation. It’s not technically in Notting Hill, but definitely walkable - about fifteen minutes at most. It’s also a treat to walk around Kensington, especially the Hillgate Place’s beautifully colorful homes. Would definitely return!

I have been going to this pub on and off for over 25 years. In the cycle of these things, it has been good, excellent, bad and terrible. Unfortunately, it is currently on a downward turn. On my last two visits the beer has been awful. Undrinkable. In addition, the staff (almost all of them new) come across as disorganised, unfriendly and slightly scared. Historically, one of the most inviting features of this place was the quality of the staff. Shame. The pub no longer takes cash - apparently, according to an employee - to stop people stealing from the till. For many years, this has been my go-to venue in Notting Hill. Not any more.

This is a very nice little gastro pub, tucked away off Notting Hill Gate. I'd gone for a quiet drink with a friend but quickly discovered that their emphasis is on the gastro element not the pub element. All tables were booked so having just a drink was a little awkward. This isn't to knock them at all... It's just worth being prepared or to book and eat if that's your Intent. They do a good selection of beers however and service was swift and pleasant from staff. I did end up eating and very nice it was too... Expect upwards of about £15 a head. Decor was nice... Pop rock theme and it was clean and as you might expect its crowd appeared to be mostly relatively affluent locals and a spattering of tourists looking for Hugh grant and a pub experience. Nice place but be aware of what it is and isn't... And book if you plan to go.

We stopped for lunch on a beautiful sunny afternoon and managed to grab a table outside. Couldn't have asked for more, couple of drinks and a simple lunch on a quiet side street in Notting Hill. Only popped inside to use the toilet but it is very tastefully decorated and I can imagine spending a cosy Sunday afternoon in the winter in here.

Went for an early dinner (6:30). Please was busy, with friendly staff. Beer was OK (they are a cask marked pub), and there was a reasonable wine select, I had ribs, they were hot with a good spicy sauce, severed with chips and a small dish of cold slaw. Reason for 4 stars rather than 5, i had to ask 3 times for additional napkins (since ribs can be messy), and no handwipes. Many tables were booked out which can be a good sign, but can also be a pain if just drop in like I did. Worth a visit if in the area.

It was very lively on a Saturday evening, was annoyed at myself for not booking a table! The beers are good and the bar staff very friendly. We did get a table and with that we got table service which was much appreciated. We had fish and chips and a burger both of which were great. The fish was tasty and fresh.

This pub has an awful habit of reserving tables and putting the time when the party is due to arrive on a board on that table. They rarely turn up on time if at all causing other customers who want to sit down to leave after just one drink. Never, ever reserve tables on a Friday evening or you too will lose customers like this pub does, time and time again.

Good pub ...good atmosphere...great fish and chips. The Hillgate is slightly more upmarket than the other pubs in Notting Hill Yet retains a traditional feel. A decent mix of beers on tap, however the wine list could do with some cheaper options. The menu is a mix of traditional and international. Fish and chips is excellent.

We had a late sitting for dinner at a restaurant around the corner so came to the Hillgate for pre-dinner drinks on Friday night. It’s a fantastic pub with friendly staff and was busy without feeling too crowded. It has a good bar selection and nice simple décor. I’ve been here in the past for weekend lunches and the food was pretty good. Sadly there’s not much in the way of outdoor space – a couple of tables on the pavement which if you’re lucky enough to snap up on a hot day then great, but the main space in the pub is wide and great for a group of friends. I can’t wait to come back in the winter for a cosy pub lunch.

The menu sounded amazing but the food was not! The bacon was fatty and the burger was burnt and dry, for sure it was cooked earlier or the day before and just gets zapped in the microwave for 2 minutes. The Shepherds pie sounded amazing but was quite a small portion and only came with a minuscule helping of seasonal greens, no seasonal vegetables. The Eggs Benedict was sold as having crispy bacon but came with chopped ham which was only ok, the hollandaise had way too much lemon juice. The avocado toast needed a squeeze of lemon juice and the fish cake was mostly potato with hardly any fish, and again was quite a small portion for the price.Overall it was massively underwhelming and over priced!

I have been to the Hillgate several times ( my friends seem to like it for some reason) and I have never felt like a valued customer. You are one among many. For the amount of money they charge and for the area it's in they should really know better. The management has changed so much in the past few years its no wonder they haven't got things right. Other pubs in the area such as the Uxbridge offer a much nicer experience.

went with a friend for a bite early evening - took over 30 minutes to get our food after ordering and we had to chase - he had a fish and chips which was ok but fries horribly over salted- I had chicken pie which was HORRIBLE - soggy undercooked pastry, underneath lumps of chicken in a watery unbelievablely salty sauce with a few bits of stringy spinach - I would have sent it back but did not fancy another 30 minute wait - also very noisy and one had to virtually climb over people to get to one's seat - also unpleasantly noisy to eat.HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE - DOES NOT DESERVE TO STAY IN BUSINESS AND FIRE YOUR COOK

Visited here last month whilst finishing up some business in oval neighbourhood and waiting for colleagues for our booking at Mazi (Greek restaurant 10 doors down).Lovely clean and refreshing peroni. Obviously fresh stock and clean lines (I've previously managed a bar cellar and can taste the difference quite literally). The decor is a little sterile near main bar (all light sandy wood colours) but more cosy in the back. I had a small platter and the 3 pigs (sausage rolls) were perfectly cooked and full of flavour. Being in Notting hill, it's not cheap, but the location on a quiet street Gary enough away from the bustle of Notting hill gate makes this a lovely pub to sit and talk in, or just enjoy a nice read, or get some solid work done (like me, as they have wifi). If in in the neighbourhood (and work is paying), I'd come back without hesitation.

The place had a really relaxed and informal atmosphere and the staff are very friendly. The selection of beers is fairly extensive and the staff seem to know a bit about them, which is a must for anyone serving drinks. The venue is quite open plan, so good for larger groups to join tables too. Superb location with unbelievable potential but not only were they rude and sarcastic to me and my wife but the large curly haired (I presume) manager was so unnecessarily rude that we didn't even want to drink our drinks. But we had already paid for our food so we decided to sit down and enjoy the sunny afternoon. When our food arrived my wife's chips were cold and my order was the wrong dish. I told the curly haired tall guy who literally snatched the food from the table so hard that peas flew into the street. He walked off swearing in front of our three year old son, came back twenty minutes later after my wife had finished her dish and slammed my meal down in front of me with no apology. As soon as I know the staff have been replaced I will recommend this place to anyone but while they insist on employing rude staff I strongly urge anyone to stay away.

We went to the Hillgate for drinks and dinner last night and were really unimpressed with the service. We ordered two medium rare steaks, they came out far from medium rare, told the waitress she agreed, then came back with them saying she'd been told they were medium rare. The manager came over, very rudely said that they were medium rare, I pointed out that they weren't as they were barely even pink, I asked if that was medium rare then what was medium and what was well done. He sarcastically said "what do you want me to do describe it, well it would be more cooked"They didn't want to do us any more food so instead bought the money back put it on the table and walked off without a word. Haven't had such bad service in a long time. It was late and we had to go and find somewhere else for dinner.

We spent 5 days at an apartment in Notting Hill, and I managed to go to the Hillgate 3 times during the stay! It's on the corner of a couple quiet streets just a block or so from the Notting Hill ubderground station. There's a row of picic tables outside and plenty of seating inside. We were there in July during a heat wave so the outdoor tables were at a premium. If you got there after 4:00 or so you were out of luck. I'm sure when the weather isn't so warm it's they're not at such a premium.Inside we always found seating, even when we showed up for dinner around 8:00.The crowd seems to be mostly locals, and by and large young professionals coming off work. There are a few tourists and they are graciously accomodated by the welcoming staff. Our dinner there was quite good with some folks having traditional pub food and some of us having some of the slightly fancier selections ( like a goat cheese and carmelized onion tart). Given the hot weather is was quite appropriate that they were serving an excellent gazpacho too.We tried several pubs in the area and this was the group's favorite by far.

Good location and a nice pub, with good wine, decent/average food and friendly staff. That said, it seems a bit odd to be charged extra for a thimbleful of mayo/ketchup/custard, particularly on prices which aren't exactly rock bottom. So check if you're going to be charged for anything!Bottom line: it's pleasant enough, but it's not as good as the Windsor Castle or the Ladbroke Arms, both of which are just around the corner.

Stumbled into this light and pleasant pub/restaurant when my favourite place, the Windsor castle, was closed for upgrading works. Staff were British so you could describe this as a British pub experience. It looked like an older traditional pub that had been renovated to give it a more modern, trendier feel but retaining some of its original period features. They have a small menu but the food was good. The 2 ladies who tended the bar were friendly and relaxed. They allow dogs and there was a very well-trained weimaraner and what looked like a black bouvier. It's not on the main high street so would be ideal as a more relaxed meeting place and for after work drinks.

As long as you have an eternity to send here you should be golden. The service is there, but cannot really see it, food is a lot faster than expected considering it took 30mins to order and only 20mins to get the food. And if you forget to order something you might as well make peace with the fact you won’t get it. Staff is nice, but for some reason four floor staff and two in the kitchen Chen struggled to serve five tables with 20 people in total and quite a few people waiting to be seated had to leave.

I went there for a coffee and wanted to use the toilet first and there was a rude lady who shouted where I was going. I said I wanted to use the toilet first and she shouted that it was for private use and when I asked where was the toilet for customers she pointed outside and said the public toilets in the street. It’s disgusting in this day and age for an establishment who serves food not to have rest rooms for customers to use. It should open its toilet to customers or close.
