We called unexpectedly as friends suggestion and were not disappointed. There is plenty of parking at this garden centre and it's pretty flat. We went for coffee and cake and there was a really good selection and it all tasted superb. We saw others orders of food and quite honestly it was mouth watering. I can't comment on prices as my friend paid. There were plenty of visitors there but service was good pleasant and not slow. We would definitely call again.

This is not a place for foodies. And there are too many deficiencies here to merit any more than 3/5. This is part of a chain of garden centres across the country and it shows in the cafe. There are too many signs of dull corporate management thinking here for my comfort. For a kick off there is no table service. It’s cheaper and easier, right? And with an average customer age of around 63, the use of contemporary pop music for our entertainment represents a disastrous piece of thinking. Put on some light classics or nothing. The price of the coffee also smacks of heartless large company profiteering. We paid £2.70 for an extremely bad cup of filter coffee. It was only drinkable because I washed it down with a coconut and raspberry slice, which, by the way was merely adequate. I found the coffee prices generally outrageous. Another problem was the lack of filling in my egg sandwich. Unacceptable. Neither was the bread of good quality. On the positive side of things, the side salad and coleslaw were both well done. Yet there was no dressing available, just mayo or salad cream. Fortunately, I like salad cream. My wife’s cake was “good.” Her panino, “adequate.” Also, I have to say that a number of plates of hot food went past our table that looked good. How they tasted I couldn’t say. Finally, the staff were friendly enough. Whether things improve in the future I won’t be able to say; there are plenty of good lunch alternatives in the area available.

Visited the cafe for the first time in 6 months and was very disappointed .Inflation has obviously had a major impact on quality and portion sizes The light bite scampi consisted of 4 yes 4 pieces of scampi and 8 chips at a cost of £8.49 a reduction of £1.50’ on the full price. The definition of a light bite “ scampi with small chips “ In the past it has been quality at a reasonable price The smothered chicken was acceptable in terms of quality and portion size If this is the future won’t be calling there again any time soon In the past we have visited on a regular basis at lest twice a month and enjoyed the experience. What a pity !!!

Visited on Tuesday, 13/12/2022. Was spoiled for choice as what to order as there was a lot of choice. Finally decided on a lighter lunch of Scampi & chips. My friend chose soup of the day which was root vegetable. The soup was served with a bread roll & butter & it was said to be very nice homemade soup with lots of taste. My Scampi & chips arrived with a salad garnish. It was nice & hot, the Scampi was cooked just right & the chips were delicious. We both enjoyed a Latte which again was hot & tasted good. Food was served quickly & efficiently & the staff was all very welcoming, friendly & nothing was too much trouble for them. Would highly recommend

Took our 2 granddaughters for lunch today and wish we hadnt bothered food was absolutely awful! Gave us mash instead of the chips we'd asked for, pie was cold and the mash a lump of stodge so sent it back, sat and waited for ages whilst the veg theyd left on the table was going cold. Girls barely ate anything which is unusual for them but im not surprised as both meals looked dry. Customer service leaves a lot to be desired here. Beautiful vegetable accompaniment with extra creamy mash. I couldn't have been better pleased, and it was half price on the eat out to help out scheme. My mum had the salmon in hollandaise sauce, a tea and large latte for just under £15.59

We’ve been going to this Restaurant for years but today, the Christmas Lunch was Absolutely Dreadful! - the turkey looked like it had been over Microwaved and was like rubber - we even changed it for Steak & Kidney Pie which again was so poor - pastry RAW!! Agency chef in as normal chef crew off sick - but really at Christmas !! They were kind enough to give a full refund but even so this doesn’t repay the disappointment especially at this time of year! The restaurant was freezing as well and no music or atmosphere - what on earth is happening to this once great place to eat????? What a shame!

We haven't been to Highlands for a while and we realised when we arrived today that the Garden Centre was under new management. However, it's still the same staff and the menu in the restaurant is exactly the same. We called in for a lunchtime snack, but found when we got to the till that there was a 40 minute wait for food - even a sandwich. So we quickly changed our minds and just had a fruit scone and a cherry almond scone instead, because we weren't prepared to wait that long. Both were very freshly baked and excellent. I would say that they need to get more staff in the kitchen, as it seemed an inordinately long time to wait for food. By the way, the name will be changing to Tansley Barn.

Highlands breakfasts are just delicious! Hot, tasty and plentiful 😋 The herby sausages are the best quality & taste like homemade. Thick toast, big pot of tea, daily papers, relaxed atmosphere and service with a smile....love it! One tiny criticism - the cutlery in the baskets is not always clean and shiny? I give 5 stars because as a garden centre cafe you would be hard pressed to find anything any better The food is excellent quality, well cooked and presented.. You need a good appetite as the food is plentiful, served by extremely pleasant staff. What I enjoy is the huge bowl of a variety of fresh vegetables that are served separately. I really don't like to receive my meal with everything piled up on my plate. Ok it isn't for anyone who is looking for a cheap meal but you certainly get what you pay for. I had booked lunch for me and a friend as we had a 'buy one get one free' voucher. I rang the day before to book for 12.15 as I know they get very busy. We arrived about 12.10 and joined a long queue at the counter. My friend went to look for our reserved table only to be told that there was no record of our booking! Great start. My friend managed to find a table for 2 and we chose our food. When I finally got to the counter I was told that we could not order off the specials board because of the voucher. There was no note of this on the voucher, and to make matters worse, I went to see what my friend wanted off the table menu (a very limited choice and nothing like the specials board) I was then told I had to join the back of the queue again, which was even longer by this stage! The least the staff could have done was to let me back in the queue to save having to wait again, we felt very badly treated. Also, we had pre ordered our drinks, which were served promptly, but my coffee went cold while I was standing in the queue for the second time! I have experienced a similar situation before when using vouchers for a free breakfast, not enough staff to handle the busy rush, a very poor situation. The staff on the whole are pleasant and helpful, but I suggest that the management make all the offers very clear when giving out vouchers and make sure there are enough staff to cope with the rush.

Come on, get the improvements sorted before the rest of your regulars go elsewhere!I have seen far less people we recognise week in week out since the changes and the dramatic change in service. Food is still good depending on the chef! You can tell when it’s not the regular one. Time to decide if you can actually carry on serving food on a Sunday if you can’t staff accordingly... the staff are demoralised and fed up of being moaned at. (I don’t as it’s not their fault). Might be interesting to see management work a Sunday shift and see what they have monumentally cocked up! The coffee was not particularly to my taste and I wished that I had ordered tea, but that is a very subjective assessment. It is a place to which we would love to return when in that area. For frequent visitors there is a reward card that is worth having (to start collecting points ask at the food counter before you pay). Update: when we went back 2 days later the massive cakes had over half sold out and choices were very limited. There were, however, plenty of the more regular size cakes. We enjoyed carrot cake and scones with jam and cream.

As with most of the people who have written reviews my wife and I have visited for many years but since the takeover things have certainly gone downhill, food quality is just about ok but most things are over priced, could this be due to the fact that they are issuing reward vouchers and recouping the money by increasing the price. On two occasions we have booked a table for Sunday lunch but on arrival we were told that we hadn't booked , but this was eventually resolved. One last is that my wife only has small dinner but the price doesn't reflect this as it is only £2 cheaperRongie

Took my daughter out for lunch last Wednesday to this restaurant. The attitude of the lady serving us was atrocious. We had booked a table and when I asked what table we were at she pointed at the table, took our order without a please or thank you! My daughter asked for a diet coke and the glass she gave us was filthy. I asked for another one and she slammed it down on my tray. We found our table and it wad full of dirty pots so I went to ask for this to be cleared I got a massive sigh! There was no cutlery in the pots and when they were replenished the forks were mostly dirty. Will not be eating here again. This was a treat for my daughter as this is not a cheap place to eat. I think some staff training may be in order and maybe a nee dishwasher. Such a shame ad this used to be a lovely place when it was the chocolate shop and separate little cafe but in my opinion they have tried to do too much with the same amount of staff, they are clearly stretched.

The second time we have visted here for afternoon tea, had vouchers both times for 2 for 1, even full price it's well worth the money. Huge amount & they supply takeaway boxes if you can't manage it all. Lots of sandwiches, for choices if fact on afternoon tea for two. We had the one with puddings & chocolates on it. Really worth the money, we took 3 takeaway bowls home!

Having been long term fans we have felt that the last few months service has slipped. What was once a fast friendly service can now take up to an hour. We love the freshly prepared food but why has this taken such a drop in service. Arrived today to find the place nearly empty. Virtually unheard of! Once upon a time the only way to get a table on a Sunday was to book! Our Sunday lunch today was smaller (no roasties or yorky pud) but gone up in price. Extending in the way you have into the garden centre has left you understaffed and overstretched. A suggestion would be a very simple drinks and cakes 'cafe' in the top section adjacent to the conservatory. With the 'restaurant' operating as before. That way saving the serving staff chasing around like headless chickens. They are the backbone and they are really not being treated the way they should! The new managers really have bodged this up! And it appears the Farm shop can't serve the local beers anymore because the licence holder has left! Come on listen to the regulars and get the old Highlands back, not drive us away. Because I hate to say it unless things improve we will be joining many other regulars who we don't see anymore and look elsewhere for our Sunday lunch.

Ever since the new owners have come in, they have totally destroyed what was so special about this place, I feel sorry for the people who work there, as they seem to be always rushed off there feet due to not having enough staff. A quiet place for a coffee and meal, not any more since the playbarn arrived, now some visits are like being in a creche. The wait time for food is getting longer 30 - 45 mins is normal. Empty tables full of plates etc, seem to take ages before they are cleared away, so be prepared to move them yourself.I can't see how any of the new changes benefit the customers, only the new management.Sorry we wont be coming back.

Went with my parents and sister for afternoon tea for my birthday. I can honestly say that we all agreed it was the best we have ever had and we do afternoon tea a lot. Including and Betty's tearoom. It outshone all of them. You could tell the sandwiches has been made fresh and the cakes were all delicious. We upgraded to the dessert and chocolates which was a good choice! The raspberry moose was mouth watering and the chocolates were just the perfect finish. Will definitely be back again soon. Perfect birthday present

My wife an I have eaten here a number of times when visiting the nursery and have been used to the slow pace of the service but our last visit promoted me to write this review.Despite the restaurant only being half full I had the usual ten minute wait in the queue to have my order taken, prawn salad and chips for my wife, chicken, chorizo and penne pasta for me, some 45 minutes later I had to go and ask where our food was, other diners were also asking as to why there was such a delay for fairly easy to prepare food, our food duly arrived about 5 minutes later, minus the chips !!!!, my wife enjoyed her salad very much, but unfortunately my penne pasta was soaked in olive oil and had a lining of oil on the bottom of the bowl about 3mm deep, all I could taste was oil, it was dreadful. We were expecting to be asked during our meal if as usual "is everything alright", no such courtesy was forthcoming, in fact there was a noticeable lack of bodies around the counter when I went to complain about the "oil slick", after about another 20 minutes we left feeling very, very disapointed, will we be going back, to the nursery yes, to the Highlands, no !!!!This isn't what you would call a cheap place to eat, a small bottle of beer @ £3, a bottle of "posh" lemonade just under £3 and the average cost of a meal is around £10, portion of chips @ £3, quite simply not good value from our last visit.

We have been regulars for years, the food was previously fantastic, however since the refurbishment, and menu changes we have experienced a decline in the quality of food and also the service.Previously the home made quiche were outstanding, now they are a poor excuse, thin and under cooked base. Another favorite used to be the steak pie, not any more, the pastry topping is nothing like it was before and the gravy and general quality of the dish is not the same. There are a number of much younger staff employed who lack basic skills, and pleasantries, tables not being cleared, on one occasion one young man pushed passed us on the steps with a mop and bucket, very rude. To say that we are dissapointed is a gross understatement, the restaurant has grown in size but this is not for the better in respect to quality of food or service, please think about why the previous success was indeed a success, and try to give back what has sadly been taken away.

A friend and myself visited for lunch. We ordered a quiche and salad and a pork and chiritso burger with chips for myself, I didn't really want the chips, but was told they were part of the order, which couldn't be altered ????? Shortly afterwards our pot of tea arrived, very welcome . After 40 minutes waiting, and seeing others who had come in after us being served I went to inquire as to the whereabouts of our order, to be told "well you ordered of the specials board and that has to be cooked" ??????. Our meals finally arrived 10 minutes later. Well it's no wonder that half the population is obese, the amount of food that was on my plate would have fed a small army, and was really off putting, far too much, what I managed to eat was very good but I hate wasting food and was disgusted with myself for having to leave and assume waste a lot of good food. Even my partner who had the quiche took some of her salad home in plastic bag she found in her handbag. Please could you offer smaller portions to those of us with smaller appetites. Thank you, AlanO.

I took my Mum for lunch yesterday. Drinks were served very quickly but we were advised there would be a short delay for the chops as they are cooked to order and the restaurant was busy. About twenty minutes later we got an excellent bowl of mixed veg, quickly followed by our chops. It was well worth the wait as I have never had a better cooked pork chop; well cooked through, very juicy and delicious and the crackling was crisp. There was ample mash, tasty stuffing and good gravy with an extra jug on the side. The colourful veg was beautifully cooked and our only problem was we couldn't eat it all but the very helpful waitress packed it up for us to bring home. Overall an excellent meal worthy of a high end restaurant.

We decided to try breakfast here while visiting the garden centre. The garden centre is undergoing quite a lot of building change at the moment however the cafe is the same so far.Our experience of breakfast was average I had a very nice bacon sandwich, however my wife had a toasted teacake on one side it was unfortunately black the other side was burnt, really it shouldn't have been served to us.The cafe was cold, I'm not one for having breakfast in the cold. The staff were very pleasant although drinks served were slow and it wasn't busy.Hopefully the garden centre rebuild will make the cafe more comfortable as well.

We had planned to get there in time for breakfast but unfortunately we were too late. We decided on a panini and a toasted sandwich. Both were delicious. My husband's tea was to his liking as was my cappuccino. This was a first visit being new to the area following a recommendation by someone we happened to meet who is a regular visitor there. We will definitely be making a return visit.

The regular (not large) full English breakfast is £6.75 and excellent value, the quality of the ingredients is what you would expect of something more expensive. The sausages in particular were very meaty. Don't do large unless you are really hungry, out of three people only one managed to finish their meal. The only problem was it was extreamly busy and service was a little slow. However the staff were apologetic and we now know they do take bookings, which I would recommend during busy periods.

Met with my sister to celebrate her birthday having booked a table in advance. We were given a friendly greeting and shown to a nice table by the window. We both had something from the specials board (fish pie and creamy King prawn curry). Dessert was sticky toffee pudding and cheesecake. Have visited here many times before and highly recommend it. Great food, nice cosy atmosphere and very friendly staff.
