We have visited many stately and grand 4 star spa hotels over the years but decided to chose this beautiful quaint hotel for our 22 wedding anniversary weekend away. The hotel is a short walk from the Matlock high street and cable cars. The view from our room was of an amazing cliff the beds comfortable the rooms modern and clean. The meals was Very nice everything we eat was at the most amazing standard and presented beautifully. The hotel was full I think but we still had a lovely quiet meal in the evening there was no noise from any other rooms .the front of house desk was very polite and helpful and kept the hotel running at an impressively high standards. We have already booked to return with the children this could quite easily be our new get away place to visit thankyou for an amazing cliff view stay .

There are few hotels left in Matlock now compared to what used to be for a, spa town lack of investment in the town in cash and passion for the town from county hall is the perennial problem. This hotel is a gem, always has been and its beautiful well kept maintained and its period detail has been respected conserved and used as a feature as opposed to other hotels in the area. I was impressed very impressed with the courtesy afforded by the management their politeness curtesy was outstanding to both my partner and myself. There is a can do attitude and a desire to provide comfort to a guest by customer service and its sincere not affected or false such things I notice I stay in many hotels as per my reviews but this place I've always liked and periodically stayed in upwards of 30 years breakfast was a hot breakfast with a choice of continental, important in an area popular with hikers and walkers that need a choice of hot cooked food for their start to the day and also for travelers both commercial and other wise that come here. The rooms were spotless well appointed, fast broadband, and a good bar and reception area of and in keeping with the Georgian hotel it is it shows its history with engravings and pictures on the walls showing it through the ages so the place holds and keeps its historical worth rather like the old temple hotel did when it was open in the days of Mrs hessel or the new bath in the days of trust houses. Well done High tor and for the service and a good stay you offered us both both in the resteraunt the bar and the excellence of our room. A yardstick for other hotels to follow in this area.

Very conveniently located if you want to walk into Matlock bath. Room 5 has a lovely big bath which was nice although the furnishings were a bit oddly placed the room, the wardrobe is difficult to access due to a bed settee being placed next to it but it was clean and bright. I did notice as we booked that continental breakfast was included this was cereals, yogurts, fruit, toast and croissants sadly no meats or cheeses. We didn't eat at the hotel as we booked to see the illuminated boats and illuminations which took place between 6-9pm which was unfortunately the same times they serve dinner. The only criticism was at breakfast we were brought tea/coffee then had to ask for cups and milk!

My wife and I booked this hotel because it was in a convenient location between Matlock and Matlock bath. We arrived early for check in and were told our room wasn't ready and couldn't have it till 3 pm as it was the rules, any other hotel ,it would have been ready,so we had to kill time in town for 2 hours. The young guy on reception gave us an envelope with our check in details ,even though we couldn't check in and told us to choose breakfast for the following morning .We booked this hotel cause breakfast was included, I thought cooked breakfast but no, it was only continental breakfast, had to pay for full English, which I wasn't happy about. The room was nice and tidy, the bed was really comfortable and the bathroom was nice.It did look like it had been decorated in a hurry, with socket extensions screwed to the walls instead of proper sockets in the rooms and they had a heater on the wall which didn't work ,so they put a space heater in the room , which is a fire hazard . I wanted a bath ,but the plug was faulty and the water kept draining out . We slept ok ,but there is a lot of traffic noise . Breakfast was served in a dining room that looked like a school canteen. On being seated ,you were given a plastic tray with your cups, plates and cutlery (lay your own table) .On the last day our cooked breakfast was cold, we complained and was given money off the bill.On checking out,we didn't even get a goodbye. Overall, we will not be returning, the whole hotel lacks any rustic charm except for the outside and we found the whole experience very sterile and the staff very uncommunicative.

Along with the fantastic Sunday lunch which offers plenty of choice and caters for gluten free, there is also a wonderful view of climbers on 'High Tor'. The restaurant is tastefully decorated, comfortable and has a lovely relaxing ambience with soft background music. Every one who visits Matlock Bath should try the Sunday lunch.

We'd booked for one night and as it was Sunday and in view of reviews. we decided to book to dine at the hotel too. On arrival we were asked if we could eat earlier as the chef was not feeling well. With hindsight, we would have been better to decide to eat elsewhere. As a place to stay, the hotel is fine - not special but ok. It is generally nicely decorated (I particularly liked the fresh flowers) and the staff were friendly. Our room appeared to have been refurbished fairly recently but there were some odd decisions. The basin in the bathroom was very small - the type you'd usually see in a home cloakroom - fine to rinse your hands but difficult to clean your teeth over without your head hitting the wall. And the tap leaked - and judging by the damage to the unit below the basin it had probably done so for some time. There were cracked floor tiles. The bath was lovely and the choice of tiles was resonant of local stone. The bed was very comfortable - pity the bedside lights did not switch separately which meant my husband had to stop reading when i wanted to sleep. The 'curtains'' were vertical blinds which did little to stop the early morning sun (in an east facing room). As the hotel is on the A6 the traffic noise in the morning further made a lie in an impossibility. Ask for a room at the back? The wifi does not extend to the rooms and was unreliable - the barman eventually accepted there was a problem when 3 customers complained and restarted the router which solved things. Our evening meal experience was not a success - having been asked to dine earlier than planned, we had a pre-dinner drink whilst looking at the menus. The wine was not chilled -- only very slightly below room temperature - and a request for some ice led to the admission that they had run out! To be fair, the barman was embarrassed and did drive off to source some eventually. No ice? In a bar? What if i'd wanted a G&T?So on to the food. The starters we chose were a black pudding, poached egg and pancetta - which was exactly what appeared on the plate - no salad or garnish - and a sicilian vegetable dish which was uninspiring and unseasoned (even though the chef had told me it was wonderful). No bread was offered. Our mains were lamb shank - cooked nicely but again lacking seasoning (maybe some rosemary, garlic or mint would not go amiss) in a pool of 'bisto' type gravy with a few overcooked vegetables. The fiery chicken was indeed that - overcooked chicken breast coated with uncooked spice (hot paprika i think) - the over-riding flavour was uncooked heat. The dauphinoise potatoes were ok, the coleslaw runny and overall an unexciting dish. The breakfast however was nicely done with a good menu choice but even this was spoilt by slightly slow service - the toast arriving after i'd eaten my poached eggs. Whilst we will no doubt return to the area we'll be looking for somewhere else to stay and to eat

I cannot understand the previous reviewer as when I visited the restaurant very recently the place was warm, busy and all were having a good time. The menu, the food, the service was just superb, The menu had a good choice for all and especially the vegetarian options which are truly wonderful. I had the risotto and vegetable stuffed roasted squash: the flavours were astounding and far, far better than I imagined they would ever have tasted. My companions had: 1) the a fusion of chilli, linguine, courgettes wrapped around sweet caramalised red onion and feta cheese: scrumptious was the word used after the very first bite! 2) My other friend had a steak which was ordered as medium to well done and was served just as he liked it and his comment was "its very unusual to be served a steak to my liking so I'm coming here again!, 3) The remaining meal was sea bass which was cooked to perfection and tasted fantastic. The starters complimented the main course perfectly and the sweet course was to die for!!!! You have to try them. The hotel rooms are beautiful, clean and well furnished with very comfortable beds. All in all a wonderful wonderful hotel with an outstanding restaurant and staff, and from my experience, the food here is of equal if not better than I have eaten in good restaurants in London. As Arnie says "I'll be back" but in my case very soon. Thank you to everyone.

It never had much flavour and the chips were wedges so was a bit bland. We all felt the same it was a bit disappointing. We thought we might have a desert so My sister had the creme brûlée which was just cold curdled custard and my Mum and I had rhubarb fool when that came it was just whipped cream. In October my daughter booked for Christmas Day Lunch at High Tor Hotel. In November we added 5 more people to the party. On both occasions we filled in forms to pick our food for the day. So far the price had gone up by £3.00 per head. At the beginning of December we contacted the hotel to ask if we could add 2 more people to the party. A menu was emailed to my daughter and suddenly the meal had gone from 3 courses to 7 and more than doubled in price. We immediately contacted the hotel and they tried to make out that we had booked the Christmas menu for December not for Christmas Day and said we had no proof that we had a booking. They eventually found our booking but then said they could do nothing about it as the person who had taken the original booking no longer worked for them. At this point we asked for our £70 deposit back and were told we would have to wait until they had investigated further. At no point were we given the lady's name but we were led to believe that she was the manageress. We waited for the promised call back the next day but when no-one had called by that evening I rang the hotel to be told the manageress hadn't turned up. I was promised a call the next day. Still no call back so my daughter and I went to the hotel the following day where a man told us he was the new general manager and although he had heard of our dispute he didn't know the details. He did refund our deposits but this left us with nowhere to go for Christmas Day. At no point were we offered an apology or compensation and the lady who dealt with our original enquiry was so rude she had my daughter in tears. The error was always on their part and the same error of the incorrect menu was given to us by 2 different members of staff. All in all it is an experience we, as a family, never want to experience again and we would hate for anyone else to either. The staff are incompetent and in some cases rude. The manageress was so bad at her job she even told me that she would be sacking the 2nd member of staff to give us the wrong menu, not a good management style! We had been here for a meal for my Mother's birthday in June and it was lovely but sadly that wasn't to be repeated at Christmas.

My review Isn't really regarding the restaurant, but the Hotel itself. My husband, Alan and I have just returned from a 1 night stay at High Tor Hotel as a birthday treat for myself. (2/8/13)We arrived and unfortunately our room wasn't ready due to the house keeper ringing in sick - my 1st thought was "Oh here we go" - but I couldn't have been more wrong - the receptionist couldn't have been more apologetic, we were offered a drink on the house (Which would have been rude not to accept!) and sat in in the bar area on very comfortable settees and relaxed after our trip to the Hotel.Once our room was ready we were shown to our room by the receptionist and when she opened the room door my jaw dropped to the floor - the room was gorgeous - but the bathroom was spectacular - both room and bathroom were spotless - the bath could fit 4 easily - if you are into that sort of thing :). But seriously - what a treasure this hotel is - if you are approaching from Matlock the Hotel has a big banner to show the way - but if you are approaching from Matlock Bath - then you will miss it as we did - but apparently the council will not allow more signs!Alan and I were meeting friends for a birthday drink and meal and decided to go into Matlock bath (Not sure this was the right decision as Matlock bath seems to shut down come 9-9.30.)Once we had waved goodbye to our friends we decided to go back to High Tor for a night cap - and so glad we did - the lady on the bar (Wish I Had found out names!) asked why we were here (As she did for every one else who came to the bar - but I still felt special) told her we were here for my birthday - and she was so annoyed that we hadn't mentioned it when we booked the room as she would have baked me a cake! This lovely lady arrived in the bar area with a sticky chocolate cake with a make shift candle for me - now you don't get that at big hotels that don't give a damn!As for breakfast - I didn't take full advantage of he "Full English" but what we chose was lovely - Egg Benedict and Royal Benedict - may be a little too much sauce for my liking but we all have different tastes.I can not recommend this hotel enough peaceful - clean and the most amazing staff - the only criticism I do have and it is only because I am a smoker and it rained most of the time we were there - there is no under cover smoking area - yes there is a lovely patio area but the seating area gets soaked - so maybe something to think about for the future Hotel Tor .But thank you for a lovely stay.May i just add my score for the atmosphere is only marked down because we would have dined in the restaurant but alas we didn't want to dine on our own - so come on peeps give this place a go.

Apparently the local council won't let them put any more signs up,which to me is ridiculous ,this is a modern upbeat place with a very friendly staff. To create a proper ambience you need customers, and that is where this place sadly is lacking not through any fault of management ,if the council want there local business people to thrive ,then let them have the signage they need to help them prosper.

Staff equally charming and helpful.Observation 1 - Why no signs on the side of the hotel, which is difficult to find in the dark, or over the front door? You undoubtedly undersell yourself.Observation 2 - You haven't got the food right yet - of the quite pricy evening meal, one plate (roast pork etc) had too much on it, the other (fish and chips) far too little. This place is a real find and sits in a superb location. Its not been open that long following refurbishment and is a lovely place to stay or eat or both! A high quality establishment that has to be one of the best in the area.

We had a groupon voucher for afternoon tea with wine and were a little concerned prior to our visit after reading some of the other reviews. There was no need to worry. The food was lovely and there was enough to fill both myself and my husband. We had a lovely view of the side of the cliff out of the window. The staff were very helpful and took us to see some of the bedrooms. They are also lovely. All in all a nice experience and we would return.

Had a groupon for two courses and a glass of wine. Without the voucher it would have been very over priced. The glass if wine was the cheap low alcohol kind we were not given a choice. Food was ok but there wasn't much of it. I Wong be going again.

We first visited the High Tir Hotel on a Wowcher coupon - we chose from the bar menu - the food was very well cooked - all home cooked - the starter of French onion soup was sublime and a home cooked chicken and ham pie was a sheer delight! Ignore all of the negative reviews.... They don't make sense and seen suspicious! The newly appointed chef is doing an amazing job! Just been ack for Sunday lunch, which again was lovely and a large portion of meat was served with perfectly cooked potatoes :-) Will go back soon !

Booked for Sunday lunch and we were treated to an amazing lunch. I had roast beef, three large thick pieces of beef, which melted in the mouth! My fiancé had roast chicken, a large chicken breast roasted to perfection and very moist! Herb infused Yorkshire Pud and lovely veg! The gravy was home cooked and was flavoursome :-) The new head chef has done an amazing job! Complements to him or her...? !!!!

We called in for lunch on september 7th 2012. I ordered risotto. When it arrived the rice was hard and inedible so had to leave it. I complained but the message back from the chef was that it was how it was supposed to be. My mother ordered roasted mediterranean veg. When that arrived the portion was absolutely minute. The food wasn't cheap and we felt cheated. Managed to get a 50 percent reduction in the bill. The hotel was clean but we were the only people there.

My husband and I enjoyed a lovely night's stay at the High Tor Hotel this weekend as part of a KGB deal, our room was small but perfectly adequate with all the modern facilities. The Hotel was very clean and refurbished to a great standard. I do agree with a previous review that the dining room is a bit bland and could do with more personality though. We received a very warm welcome, breakfast was lovely with very helpful staff. Would definitely stay again.

WHY WHY WHY Did we go in?!?! Not exactly sure what the afternoon tea was apart from DISGUSTING!!! Avoid at all costs. I've eaten in some places but this place is bad! Didn't even bring it home to feed the husband.. now thats BAD!

I went with my daughter for the afternoon tea on the 8th November 2012, I have never been served food quite like this and I have eaten in a lot of places around the world, I have to say even sweetcorn brought from a old lady at the side of the road in the middle of Sri Lanka tasted better. The ham sandwiches were full of fat and gristle, the bread soggy and wet, the cakes dry and some of it was difficult to tell what it was supposed to be. Even the coffee was undrinkable, I would not recommend the food to anyone including my dog.

My partner and I ate here for dinner about a month ago. She had persuaded me to give it a go as she remembered it as an old stomping ground many many millennia ago. It's been renovated in the past year in a local press frenzy of "2 millions pounds" and much hyperbole. I was very interested to see it to be honest. The downstairs is very well appointed and the tradesmen who were responsible need congratulating. The designer, however, doesn't. It's so bland and "magnolia" coloured that I kept lapsing into a nightmarish vision of what living inside a scoop of cheap ice cream might feel like. Whomever has ordered the renovation is obviously not short of a bob or two as I noticed the sound system (something I know about from a previous professional musical lifetime) was not cheap and was a bit of overkill for the size of the place and the quality of the music which I was subjected to - the worst of R&B). The fittings throughout went like this -cheap, cheap, average, expensive, average, lottery winner, average, B&Q. It is very, very odd. If I were a betting man I would wager that the owner is a young(ish) affluent male. To the meal...The staff are very helpful and smiley, and polite in all the right places. The dining room is awful. It's devoid of anything interesting except the sound system which by now I was convinced was the single most expensive fitting in the whole place. The menu was the usual gastro, nouvelle, copied dishes, stuff that you'd expect - chicken, lamb, all with a distinct southern European feel to it. I don't like tomatoes very much. There, I've said it. Only one dish appeared to not contain them - chicken something or other - so I ordered it. Starter of smoked salmon too.The salmon was beyond reproach. Smokey, no big fat veins, it was well sourced even if it didn't come from the river derwent the other side of the road, as befits the current foodie fashion. I really enjoyed it. The main was a challenge. It came as a chicken "joint" with the small bone scraped back. OK, it was pointless, but it did add attention to detail to my list. The "sauce" it was sitting in was oily and tasted, oddly, of chemicals. I was making the best of the whole affair while trying to look interested as my partner regaled me with stories from 30 years ago until I saw raw chicken. It was close to the bone. Now I'm not one to panic at this sort of thing, even though I had campylobacter, caught in marrakech, for a month, and I like all my meat rare to bleeding, but it wasn't right, Coupled with the chemical sauce and weird over fried diced potato, I gave the dish a thumbs down. We didn't try pudding. I'm not feeling angry about this meal, so don't get that idea (even though I felt it was a tad expensive for what it was). I'm more angry that they've "blanded" up the place to the point of misery. I'm absolutely certain the chef has some skill, even when displaying it to an empty dining room. I hope the owner reads this and decides to fill the place out a bit with things which detract from the "barrett home" feel of the place, good though the workmanship is.I'd like this place to succeed. It's within walking distance and is an imposing building in it's own right.

We had afternoon tea at this hotel which we got on a wowcher offer and it was lovely. We had a good deal with Wowcher but it was so nice that we would have paid the full price for it. The tea we had was really good with lovely home made cakes and the sandwiches were fresh and delicious and it was all presented with beautiful crockery which made it extra special. The Hotel is newly opened in June 2012 and is lovely and clean. The staff are excellent at their job and their customer services skills are second to none. They made us feel so welcome from the time we arrived to the time we left. We will definitely be going back and next time we will be staying there, it was that good!

The food was dreadful and expensive. Can’t say it any plainer. Schnitzel was burnt and poorly presented. Pasted was soggy. The very worst was the waffles which had been microwaved and were solid! Just the two us for a birthday meal with one drink each and it cost £91!
