We had a large scallops and chips (10 scallops seared in varicose butter sauce) and they were fantastic. Best scallops I’ve had in a long time!

Super scallops and chips! Scallops were fresh and beautifully cooked and the chips were dims and not soggy ... we will be coming back again... and again

I love getting my lunch or diner at Herbies! Tonight I asked for Grilled haddock, it’s not on the menu but the guys are always willing to cater to your needs where they can. It was DELICIOUS thanks again Curly & Matt for my amazing dinner best fish in town!! Would highly recommend I’m a local to Lyme Regis & it’s where I get my fish & chips!

We treated ourselves to a late afternoon meal. The scallops were really lovely. Unfortunately the fish in batter was bony and the chips a bit hard. Lovely, friendly service, and a few metres from the Cobb, where you can sit and watch the world go by.

We were sitting having a beer near the Wet fish shop and saw the man from Herbies going to fetch fresh fish so we were really looking forward to trying the food.Quick service after placing order (one fish and chips and one Scampi and chips). Very dry chips, almost not really fried in oil or anything, scampi was standard frozen stuff which I could have at home. Husbands fish was tasteless and batter was soggy and nothing to write home about. We both left 90% of the chips, we won’t be going again.

Hands down the best fish and chips I’ve ever had!! Myself, my husband and son absolutely loved it, waiting a few minutes for freshly cooked food is never an issue in my book and believe me I would have waited longer. The wedge of lemon is a nice touch and not something you usually get in a takeaway. Should have taken photos but we were too eager to try them. Can’t wait to try again!!

We are a family of four - greeted by friendly and helpful staff. Cod, Scampi and chips all served nice a hot, cod had a nice crispy batter and the scampi was simply outstanding. Already, we are looking forward to our next visit. :)

30 minute wait for fish & chips, plus squid & chips and when we went to eat them, the quality was really poor on both. Both of us only ate a bit before they were binned. Won’t be going there again.

We had to wait a few minutes for the food to be cooked, however didn't mind this as it meant it was fresh. The food was lovely =)

We have been coming to Herbies twice a year for nearly 10 years.Today was the 1st time we have been disappointed with the quality of the chips,they were dry and tasted as if they had been cooked several times .The fish was several small pieces and tasted greasy and the last disappointment no curry sauce.Come on Herbie you can do better than this.

Been using Herbies for many a year now on this occasion very disappointing indeed no curry sauce !!!! The chips were awful tasted like they were cooked yesterday and reheated up for today the fish was ok batter crispy but greasy don’t think I shall be using Herbies again !!!!

Food was fresh and very tasty. We had scampi and chips and cod and chips. The scampi was some of the best I've ever had and the portions were huge! Slight wait but nothing extreme and well worth it. Lovely sitting on the harbour to eat. We even visited twice in the same holiday! 100% recommend.

High expectations but very disappointed!! Chips were frozen not fresh homemade ones! Fish over cooked and dry. Definitely won’t return.

Excellent food from here, had grilled lemon sole and chips, was fantastic. In the past they have had grilled mackerel on offer too, had to wait a little while but they were very busy and was definitely worth those wait.

My expectation was high because of the Tripadvisor reviews but the cod and chips I got was in my option, below average. Had to wait 30 minutes to get the food. Did not bother finishing it, would not bother to go there again. Big portions though.

The title says it all really. We went for lunch on a very busy day so we expected a long wait time and were happy to wait.What I found strange was the young guy serving didn't acknowledge us waiting to order at all. The only time he communicated with us was to ask what we wanted to order.We were probably waiting 30 minutes+ from arriving to getting our food.We ordered whitebait and chips and squid and chips. All the food was extremely greasy and the whitebait was lukewarm at best. I noticed them putting some of our food in a microwave while they were waiting for the rest to cook.As we left the young guy serving didn't say thank you or goodbye, just plonked the food on the counter and turned around and started chatting to a random guy who had let himself in the back of the unit.I judge food I buy when eating out on if I could have done it better myself and in this case unfortunately that is the case. It tasted no better than frozen whitebait and chips you could buy from Tesco.To be honest I wouldn't have bothered writing a review if it wasn't for the ignorant service but that was the icing on the cake of the below average food.If I were you I'd try somewhere else.

We had a lovely fish and chips sitting by the harbour today. Would highly recommend to anyone in the area.

Enjoyed the most amazing scallops and chips and whitebait and chips. Sat on the wall opposite with out take away alcohol and ate in the sun with a beautiful view. Highly recommended

We got fish and chips in the rain to take back to our holiday house which was 25 mins away (10 mins walk and 15 mins drive). I expected it to be soggy fish and chips by the time we got back not least because of the weather but it WASN’T soggy and it WAS delicious! Absolutely best fish and chips I’ve had in a long time. Great service and staff too. Highly recommend Herbies. No photo to add to the review as we are up and the food before I thought to take one! Delicious.

We arrived half an hour before they closed so they were very busy. The staff were cheerful and helpful. Portions were generous and everything was freshly cooked. Thoroughly recommended.

The guys working here are so friendly and accommodating, even for a awkward customer, who had 3 kid, they not only cut it into quarters, but put onions in 2 parts, leaving 1 part with none. Also, the food was amazing !!!!Thank you all :)

This place is brilliant. We had a large portion of scallops, salt and pepper squid and a battered fish and chips between 2 adults and 2 small children. I’m glad we only got one portion of chips as it was huge but really good and definitely not frozen!! The scallops (perfectly cooked) and the squid were the favourites though - really enjoyable and made a day trip even more memorable. So pleased we listened to the other positive trip advisor reviews!

They were more than happy to cook the two mackerel that we had just caught with Harry May. It was delicious; obviously very fresh and saved me a lot of hassle back at our campsite. I thought that it was a strange thing to ask (our skipper had told us about it) but the staff in Herbie's were more than happy. They even gave us some sachets or tartare sauce and wedges of lemon. Their medium chips were massive as well.Thank you very much. If I ever catch mackerel in Lyme Regis again I know where to go.

No queue system in place to maintain social distance, which would be helpful due to how busy they are. Chips are awful just fried frozen chips. The fish was ok but the batter wasn’t fully cooked in place. Portion size is huge, if that’s what you’re looking for.

After reading all the positive reviews on Trip Advisor we decided to have fish and chips at Herbies on our visit to Lyme Regis. Fantastic fish but very average chips. A bit of a wait for the food but that’s fine as it’s all freshly cooked. Very cheery guys working on the counter. Recommended!

First time going to herbies and the fish was excellent and freshly cooked but the chips were dreadful cooked from frozen which is a first for me from a chippy, come on lads get and peel some potatoes!

Had fish and chips from Herbies on Sunday and the quality remains the same year after year.Freshly cooked when you order and the fish is superb very moist with beautiful crispy batter, and the chips are perfect. Portion sizes are very big bit no lack of quality. Wonderful evening sat on the Cob eating Herbies fish and chips.........perfect.

Ate great fish and chips here twice in July 2020. Fish was delicious with crispy batter, chips were crisp and tasty! Excellent fish and chips. Despite the area being very busy on two sunny days, did not have to wait too long. Great place to get food in the open air.

Ordered 2 large chips and wow the portions sizes are impressive and for what you get, it’s really good value. Choice of many sauces. Will be returning later this year!

Ahead of our visit to the beach we were reviewing where to get the besting fish and chips and this place certainly lived up to that statement.The cod was lightly battered and the chips chunky, crispy and fluffy on the inside. The food was served in boxes so was easy to carry This was definitely a treat sitting on the beach in the sunshine. I would certainly recommend this place to order your food

The best scallops-salt/pepper squid and chips I have had for a long long time. We visited the Wet Fish shop first and they were opening the scallops we were going to have in 20 min time, so fresh. The scallops were sizzling in garlic butter on a hot plate and the salt-pepper squid had a luscious and delicious crumbly batter.

It’s a place recommended by a young man working on the fishing boat nearby. Stopped over on way to home in London. The fish( COD) was delicious and cooked just as the way it should be. Chips were big and chunky. I was told that all this place’s seafood is locally sourced. A place to remember when hungry and driving around this place. Don’t know if it’s open after summer though!

As usual, great food and friendly service. The social distancing signage was clear and people were reminded when ordering and collecting their food.

Beautiful location on a lovely day. Food from Herbies was sensational. We ordered salt and pepper squid and lemon sole. My husband says it was the nicest lemon sole he has ever had, restaurant quality. The squid was delicious. Chips were perfect and crispy. Portion sizes are very generous. Service was excellent, very friendly and accommodating. Ordered and cooked within 10 minutes. 5*’S from us.

Had the most amazing fish and chips here today. Fish perfectly cooked, juicy with crisp batter. Chips very nice. Service was very good and ample salt, vinegar and sauces.

Stopped here for a spontaneous lunch stop. The fish and chips were plentiful and beautifully cooked. Couldn't finish all the chips though, and I'm a big eater!! Service was really friendly and quick. Would certainly drop by again.

It was just somewhere we got to when we were hungry. The weather was brilliant and a lovely friendly chap ready to feed us a lunch we could eat outside in January! We ordered beer battered cod a “senior” price and small portion of chips. The cod was dipped in batter and cooked as we waited. The chips ditto. The portions were very large. Neither of us were able to finish and my husband described the fish as the best he has tasted in a long time : Clearly local and VERY fresh. We ate as much as we could perched on the slipway in bright sun with a beautiful view. What could be better for anyone.

Having used this place for chips during the summer with our children, we decided to have some lunch on a winter's day. Amazing friendly guy cooked us gorgeous scallops and squid. We also asked for an extra beef patty in my husband's burger and it was no trouble. Scallops were the best ive ever eaten. Fresh, hot, melt in the mouth. Can't wait to have these again. Great job thank you :)

Food is simple, cooked to order and tasty. Portions are generous (I couldn't finish all my chips!). The menu was a bit limited on Monday night (they had had a busy weekend), but overall it was good.

We went here after seeing someone eating lovely white piece of fish and asking where he got it. Food is cooked to order - we had haddock and got two decent pieces in very crisp (gluten free) batter and a big portion of crispy chips. We could have managed with just one between us! We sat on the Cobb to eat ( seagulls ignored us) and someone who'd been queuing with us had the scallops and they looked delicious too. Highly recommended. We will go here again when we're back in

We managed to order our fish and chips just as the guys were shutting shop at 7pm. They were the best we have ever eaten. Freshly cooked to order, we had a huge portion: the chips were crispy, the batter excellent and the fish fresh! This is the place to get your fish and chips in Lyme - but sit with your back to a wall to stop the seagulls stealing your food!

We had excellent fish and chips here, it was over the bank holiday weekend so you did have to wait as it was all cooked to order. But once we waited it was worth it!

As we stopped to look at the menu yesterday (Mon) a lady said it was the best in town. She really was telling the truth. Such a great menu to choose from, including grilled fish, unusually for a Fish'n'Chip place.The portion sizes are fantastic, and the chips the best we have ever had.

Placed our order, waited half an hour only to find they'd lost the slip and hadn't even started it yet. This would be ok, but they didn't care in the slightest. Gave up and got our money back. While we were waiting I saw some pretty ropey fish coming away, part cooked part burnt. We weren't the only ones to be messed about while were there either.

What can I say about the guys at Herbies - filleted and cooked our mackerel we caught with Harry May - couldn’t be nicer or friendlier. Fantastic fish fantastic service 👍

We bought a selection of meals...All were well cooked, fresh and delicious with really generous portions. The fresh griddled scallops in garlic butter were just amazing...you would pay £30 for 6 large scallops and a side of chips in a restaurant. Go to Herbies instead!

Yes there was a short wait but well worth it, the lemon sole grilled was tasty but my highlight were the scallops. The servings are large, my wife and I should have shared the one meal. Watch the seagulls, they are aready to swoop at anytime

Came with my guide unit and half went to your competitor next door and have to you. Unfortunately the ones who didn’t order from you had finished eating and we’re paddling before we even got our food. Two waited nearly an hour! Very slow service but if you are prepared to wait the chips were nice!

While on a long weekend in Dorset we picked up on the hype for this place so we wanted to check it out. The first day we ordered the haddock, mackerel and an extra portion of chips for the little one. They accidentally cooked two portions of mackerel so we got the extra free of charge. For round 2 we ordered sole, scallops and a battered sausage.

I throughly recommend Herbies. After a boat trip we decided to grab some fish and chips and eat them on the beach. The fish was well cooked and the batter was not at all greasy and the chips were delicious.

Felt compelled to review after eating here this evening. The food was excellent and the staff really friendly. We had a little longer wait than usual so they gave us really generous portions which went down a treat. We had haddock and chips and a few of us had the scallops and garlic which were amazing. All very delicious, thank you!

Our first average meal at Herbies, after literally dozens of excellent ones over the years- see my last review in Feb. ‘18. It was the end of a daftly hot and very busy day which may account for dry, over-cooked chips and greasy batter on equally over-cooked haddock fillets. We all have an off day, we’ll be back.

Fantastic fish and chips, the fish of the day was haddock freshly caught. Lovely batter all cooked fresh with a very large portion of chips that neither myself or husband could finish. George T Dog enjoyed his jumbo sausage too! Service was friendly and welcoming

This place is rumoured to be the only place along the promenade to actually serve fresh seafood! Crazy really seeing as it's right on the sea, but my gosh it was fabulous. I had a mixture of scallops (dripping in delicious garlic butter) and scampi, which were lovely whole prawns in a light breadcrumb. We also had the battered fish (a whale really, it was massive!) and it was such a seaside treat! £10 for a mountain of scallops, scampi and chips, and up the road they were asking £18 for 3 scallops as a starter! Herbies is amazing, takes a little time to get your order as everything is fresh, but as i prefer my food to be fresh, i didn't mind at all. Good food is worth waiting for, and these guys are doing a great job!

The best fish and chips we ate on our holiday by far. Fresh, hot, crispy and reasonably priced. The lads cooking it were really friendly. Highly recommend it.

We visit Lyme each year and of course , have fish and chips , you have to right ? Anyway Herbies is just a cut above and the icing on the cake is the grilled fish he serves up , delicious

Delicious fresh haddock cooked as you wait. Lovely chips and a decent enough portion to share as a two, sitting on the Cob watching the world drift by.

We chose Herbies for our fish and chips because they had the longest queues (usually a good sign) and the fish we could see people coming away with looked delicious! I had battered haddock and chips and my husband had locally caught grilled(?) mackerel and chips. Sadly no sooner had we stepped onto the beach a seagull nabbed my haddock!! But the lovely guys at Herbies gave me a replacement piece for a very reasonable price (and even chucked a little bit extra in). Both of our meals were delicious- the fish tasted so fresh and flavoursome, and the portion sizes were great! Also really reasonably priced and great service.

As above really! Each piece of fish (we had the locally caught haddock, from Brixham) is cooked fresh (unlike another nearby fish bar where they were all stacked on top of each other in a hot cabinet). This ensured each piece of haddock we had was hot, crispy and fresh. Chips were great too. We sadly couldn't even eat all of ours! We had to wait about 10-15 minutes but it was SO worth it. We will be back next year!

Not just any old fish and chips, but all sorts of freshly caught fish including scallops, squid, lemon sole, haddock, mackerel. Some battered and others grilled. We love their scallops and chips especially,.........

Great haddock and chips at lunchtime on a Bank Holiday Saturday. Delicious fish, perfect batter and great chips served with lemon and tartare sauce.

Decided to go here last minute. Chips mushy peas pasty and curry sauce. What out for the gulls and find a nice spot to sit down and enjoy the view. Perfect chippy on the sea front !!

I only tried the scallops and chips but they were my foodie highlight of a week in Lyme regis. Cooked beautifully, served with their roe still on and absolutely delicious. I am sure everything else they offer is also delicious.

Went here for tea today. Let’s just say I needed a magnifying glass to see the chips or the fish. Usually you order chips they pretty much fall out the box. You order a fish or pops out the box but this was just pathetic. Not to mention when opening the fish there was more fat and butter than the fish. Oh I also asked how much it would be just to put some cheese on the chips £1.20 extra on top of the 8£. Yet just fish and chips cost 3.60. And if you want chips with cheese it’s £3.80. Yeah work that one out. Fair to say I’d rather go to a fish and chip shop near me and pay 4£ and get a decent portion.

Looking for interesting fish and chips in Lyme Regis, TripAdvisor pointed us towards Herbies. Almost perfect! We had whitebait (scallops had sold out), salt and pepper squid and mackerel, all delicious, particularly the super fresh mackerel and the juicy squid rings. The only slightly annoying thing was TOO MANY CHIPS! Sounds crazy but we had to leave half of them, and we have pretty decent appetites. My wife is coming back for the scallops, I'm coming back for more mackerel!

There are 2 fish and chip shacks next to each other. Herbies is nearest The Cobb. We were on holiday and visited Lyme Regis on a beautiful sunny Saturday in March so it was mobbed. We ordered 2 haddock and chips (no cod available) as a senior which costs £6.80 each and small portion of scallops in garlic butter plus chips for £10.50. The fish and chips were crispy. I have never seen scallops on the menu before so it was good to see something different. We had over a 10 minute wait but it was worth it. We should have asked if we could have scallops without chips (not sure you can) as we threw so many chips away. Portions are big and although 4 of us we wasted a lot. Suggestion: offer medium or large portions which would mean smaller portions were cheaper?

This was a return visit, after the great experience we had before! We were served quickly and then waited for our meal. Everything is cooked to order. When it arrived it met our high expectations. A large portion of cod and chips, beautiful white fish in a light batter and delicious chips with a slice of lemon, Eating the wonderful fish and chips, on a sunny day, by the beach, ticked every box! We will most definitely return to Herbies when we next visit Lyme Regis.

We visited here out of season (beginning of Feb) therefore availability of fish was limited. The guy recommended haddock as it was the catch of the day and it was indeed very fresh & lovely.

Excellent cod and chips. Large portions, cooked to order, by friendly, helpful owner. The best batter I've had since I left Yorkshire! Not expensive either.

We had regular Fish and chips and gluten free Fish and chips cooked and served by great friendly chef. Great value and really tasty and fresh.

I got married in Lyme Regis last Friday and immediately afterwards we went for fish & chips. Our registrar recommended going to Herbie's so that's exactly what we did. I'm SO glad we did - it was the best fish I've had in my life. I had the lemon sole and my partner had the mackerel. It was so simply cooked on the grill but bursting with flavour. Fresh fish straight from the boat, generous helping of chips too and lovely mushy peas. The young lads working were friendly, fun, professional and knew exactly how to cook. We will never forget this meal as it was the perfect wedding meal. Best food we've had in a long, long time.

These chips were cooked right in front of me and sizzled when the vinegar was added. Delight. Also - the largest range of sauces knwon to chip-eating-humans. 13! PLus the vinegar. Hugely generous portion, too.

Went to this fish and chips stall as fresh cooked and seemed popular which thought was a good sign. Unfortunately fish was overcooked batter crisp hardly able to put my fork in couldn't eat the batter so left it and very little fish. Chips crisp and not soft to eat so only ate a few. Overall would not recommend.

Order two meals from here on a visit for a few hours. Well cooked and plenty of it at what I considered a fair price. Would recommend it to anyone wanting fish and chips freshly cooked.

Excellent fish and chips. Various fish available including lemon sole and scallops. All freshly cooked to order- hence about a 10 minute wait but well worth it! Just along the beachside so perfect setting to enjoy it.

We ordered at around 7pm and the choice was much more limited than you would have expected. No plaice available and only two fillets of Lemon Sole. The quality and portion of Haddock and chips was very good as was the grilled Lemon Sole which had been added with 4 Scallops to make up a 'portion'. The Scallops were fairly chewy (overcooked) but overall fairly reasonable VFM.

Friendly staff, located on the beach, fresh fish cooked perfectly. Do not need anything else. Had the scallops and the fried whitebait: both amazing!

We had read the great reviews for this place and ended up stopping here for a snack rather than a main meal.

Were surprised to see the queue for fish and chips by this stall by the Marine Parade near the Cobb.

A great meal to eat on the beach with something for all the family - just watch out for the seagulls!
