Haymarket in Edinburgh, City of

Unbelievably rude barmaid, massive chip on her shoulder. Don’t hire kids for goodness sake! It was too much for her to even speak to us. Purposely served someone in front of us (who disgustingly carried on anyway) and then ran away. Very pleasant older gentleman then had to serve us…and everyone else. The tap mixers are flat (we had gin and lemonade) our hotel was Opposite but, we obviously never went back!

Great pub food. Can’t fault the quality at all. What you would expect to find on a pub menu plus some nice local specialties. Lots of choice of beers both local and better known ones. A bit of a trek to the toilets but that didn’t impact our visit at all.

We had a lovely time . The food was delicious. Gary was very kind , we really appreciate the way he treat us . The best service ever ! Thank you so much for the lovely time .

Dieser Pub liegt zentral am Haymarket Bahnhof. Wir sind hier abends ohne Reservierung eingekehrt. Haben einen guten Tisch bekommen. Das Cullen Skink schmeckte gut; war ordentlich gemacht und reicht als kleine Vorspeise. Im Gegensatz zu den Pubs in der City war das Pint Guinness recht günstig mit 5,90 Pfund.

Terrible. Came here on 14th March with 3 friends. I ordered the mushroom pie....I was first served chicken and mushroom pie - the guy apologised for the error and took it back. Arpund 20 mins later he returned - after all my friends had eaten their meals and there was no mash potato...so I gave it back to him. Ten minutes later the plate returned- the pie was burnt and the vegetables were raw! I complained and was told they were speaking to the manager - 15 mins later..a woman plonked the bill on the table without one word, let alone an apology. I wasn't charged for my meal but basic courtesy would have gone a long way! AVOID!!!!!!!

Had a very pleasant experience, food was delicious, pub atmosphere was good, and service was great. We really enjoyed the cranachan!

Went to eat something but the kitchen was out of service due to a 40 people group, but they only said that half an hour passed and after I said that I went for dinner... They should have warned me in the beginning

Quality food in a beautiful environment, friendly & knowledgeable bar staff, a must for anyone visiting Edinburgh, miss it at your peril, award winning stated on the menus, we were left in no doubt as to why. Barman was so pleasant, made our experience so enjoyable, right by Haymarket train station, will make sure to eat here on every visit to the capital.

Fun and friendly staff with a great choice of spirits, the food was definitely something that I was happy with. I will certainly be coming back as they show multiple sports also.

We popped in today for some food and drinks after a lengthy train journey and everything was top notch cannot fault anything we were served by a gent called adam I believe and he was on top form will definitely be returning

We loved the delicious Pale Ale pie, fantastic drinks (cocktails and Guinness), and the super friendly team. It was the perfect spot on a rainy wintry day in Edinburgh. Thank you! We can’t wait to visit again!

Not great. Restaurant empty, but long wait for drinks and wrong one received. Steak pie base brick hard. Two of us unable to break it. Was charged for a dessert although we never had one Had introductory voucher for free drink. Was told it didn't work and was manually given a free glass of wine ( £ 4.25 ). I had to explain wine was not on list of complimentary drinks. It should have been the gin and tonic which was far more expensive. Staff member went and changed bill again. This all comes with a rather hefty service charge.

Great bar with friendly staff, gets very busy though so get there early for a seat at peak times.

Popped in for a quick drink, good atmosphere and reasonable pricing. Got a table no problem and the staff were friendly. Can't comment on the food as we didn't eat.

Horrendous food,raw batter on calamari and pulled pork loaded fries had chips in a bowl with some sort of meat and what seems like an easy single slice microwaved within an inch of its life judging by the volcanic heat of the bowl. I handed back the calamari and decided not to chance anything else as I was flying next day and didn't want a dose of the scuts.

Lovely Christmas atmosphere, they were unfortunately out of a few pies when we got there so it's probably best to go early or check before sitting in!

Shocking stood at the bar for 10 minutes even though there were 2 bar staff working and 8-10 customers in the pub. Completely disregarded the fact I was stood there not even a “hello” or “I’ll be with you in 5”. Pure miserable looking blokes aswell , not an ounce of a smile from either of the dower blokes…. Also the pile of about 9 bin bags just to the left as you exit isn’t the prettiest sight

Went to catch up with a family member for few hours before he went to the football. I didn't eat but all I can say is the staff , atmosphere and management of pub at every level was excellent. Will go back for sure. We'll done and from somebody who knows the trad

I was amazed at how good Haymarket was. The barman Michael was so nice to me, he even gave me his phone number so it’s likely we will be going on a date soon

Nice place,good selection of beers.I particularly like the wee space upstairs,its nice and cosy and a great spot for people watching.Staff very friendly.Place is always pretty busy around teatime workdays,but the atmosphere is always nice.Food is also pretty good with a decent choice on offer.Also it's close to the train station so you can have a quick pint or beverages of your choice.Next time your passing have a look in

What a joke this place is for food , last night my Wife and I decided to drop in at 5.30 pm for some food ...service was fine but the food ...Good grief Wife orders mushroom pie it says on the menu it comes with creamy mash potato gravy and veg, it arrived with no mash we asked waiter what happened to the mash potato he goes away to find out, comes back and tells us some weird story about pie being a vegetarian one it doesn't come with mash....I ordered garlic chicken snitzhel and fries ...chicken was like rubber and fries were overcooked like crisps . Next onto desert Wife ordered cranachan it was ok , I ordered lemon tart ..only to be told later it was off..final moan after the first drinks round a wine and shandy we ordered another soft drink ..cola for me soda water and lime for my wife ..waiter comes back no lime cordial ha ha a pub has no lime cordial..she gets elderberry cordial and soda water instead it tastes of chemical cleaner ....£62 for that never again.

Be sure to reserve at the weekend as most pubs are full. The food was very good, there were five of us and we each had something different. Everything was served together, great! However, many things were already over at 6:30 p.m. Staff super friendly! Nice ambience. Only the tables could be cleaned, that would be nice if everything wasn't sticky. We were there twice in 3 days

Stopped off for a pint after visiting the zoo. Very friendly and welcoming staff. We ordered sandwiches and didn't expect a large food of plate that was served, safe to say we couldn't eat it all. Very good value for money, and I wouldn't hesitate to re visit when we are back in Edinburgh.

We were there twice at different times. It is busy and therefore the service can take longer, but this didn't bother us. The service is friendly. Kids menu is great and the food was delicious, we felt very comfortable with our little one.

Food was lovely but the service was terrible. Very long wait for food, not helpful with dietary restrictions and the waitress seemed to ignore our request for the bill so we had to ask again. It started to get very loud towards the evening, and when I tried to access the disability toilet it was locked so had to go up some steep stairs instead.

The food was average, they don’t have many vegetarian options. Also, the vegetarian burger is almost 17£ and it comes with a salad on the side, the server refused to swap the salad for a side of fries (all other burgers come with a side of fries so I don’t see what the issue was there) so I had to order a fries separately. A small bowl of fries was 5£ so I ended up paying 22£ for my meal which was nothing special. The service was horrendous, the server dropped a glass on one of my friends. On top of that when we got our meals we asked for mayonnaise and she got us an almost empty bottle of mayonnaise, I had to find someone to ask for another bottle, 15 minutes later our server got us the same bottle and said this is the only bottle they have left. After all this they had audacity to add a service charge in the bill. There are far better places in that area, I will not go there again or recommend it.

This is an old traditional pub close to the railway station. Good choice of beers available, but a but dearer than others in the area. Friendly staff. Toilets are OK, up quite alot of steps and screws from the toilet paper holder coming through to next cubicle - potential hazard.

Good feed, well priced and excellent service. Definitely recommend if you’re in the area and looking for a feed, a drink or both. Menu is on point with just enough selection to keep most people happy and a good selection of scotch available.

Excellent food and served generously. But it was a very busy establishment (it was 7 p.m.) and the team was completely overwhelmed with customers and therefore ultimately overwhelmed. Please note, several à la carte dishes are available to order (including the typical dessert, Cranachan!).

Ambience of traditional Uk Pub is good. Bartender was less than helpful or friendly. Seemed to be annoyed having to serve. May have been having a bad night or doesn’t like tourists. Tried to order food but was told the kitchen was tied up for a function. I don’t usually leave a negative review but this was not good at all. One beer and out.

I tried this pub on our trip to Edinburgh. Its a nice place to sit and eat. They have outside sitting available. I would recommend their buttermilk chicken burger. We were a group of 5 so ended up ordering a lot but the burger stood out for me. Their fish platter and nachos are great as well. For drinks we had beer and english tea.

Nicholson's pub is really very nice, the waiters are efficient and kind and the food is very tasty. The desserts are a local delicacy. The atmosphere is typical of the pub, warm and welcoming. Advised Ps: there are options for lactose intolerants

Best Mac and Cheese I have ever had! Plus on top of that when we arrived it was packed we were told it could be 45 minute wait and bless their hearts they were directing us to another restaurant so we didn’t have to wait. We waited, we are from USA, it’s normal for us. Service here is incredible, a huge difference from US. And when we got back home, we walked into a half empty restaurant was told we would have to wait 15 minutes for them to find us a table lol A year ago we traveled from London England, into Scotland and over to Ireland all had outstanding service in my opinion. USA not so much sadly, and now it’s even worse, unimaginable.

Friday about 8pm. We were told we couldn't order food in the bar and would have to wait to be seated in the restaurant area. However, there was a "snack food" menu on our table and other customers were being served "more substantial" pub grup at other tables. We asked if we moved to a table adjacent to those other customers (nearer windows) if we could order food. The waitress simply said "no" with palms up and perplexed expression. Very odd. After waiting a while with no update we just left.

Had not been in the haymarket bar for years. No change in the decor(no problem there),was pleasantly surprised at the prices.thought it would have been more

Highly recommended for the good food, it is very cozy and has good service. At noon it's pretty quiet, I haven't tried the dinners.

Food was a solid 4 starts. The pie was fantastic and the mac and cheese was great. Staff are all over the place. Twice 3 different people asked me the same question. 1. Can I take your order 2. Would you like deserts. They desperately need someone leading front of house. Tables are all over the place and know one knows what's happening.

Came for lunch. Beer, haggis neeps n tatties. Loved it. Nice pub!

We went in for beer and a meal. Although lots of people were eating, and there was a constant stream of food being served we were told "no, sorry, we don't serve food today" while vaguely waving at the eating crowd. We didn't try to understand, we just left.

Lovely little place next to train station. Friendly staff and excellent service Food was good but not great, felt it was reheated rather than fresh but I may be wrong. Was quiet time midweek so not that busy which was good for me. Lots of beers on tap to choose from.

How has this pub gone so far downhill after the 'refurbishment'? No food after work until too late. Ale choice reduced. Ale bordering on undrinkable. How?

Seeing Gary and Olivia serve with care, professionalism and affection is the first experience that makes a visit to this old but updated place worth it. I recommend the Hand Pulled Lamb Shank, a true example of what Scottish cuisine can contribute to international gastronomy.

Scottish pub atmosphere and decor guaranteed! A crazy crowd around the bar, you have to jostle to find your way and order! Very large choice of beers, nice menu card, efficient, fast staff (despite the crazy crowd) and smiling, nothing to complain about!

Had a couple of meals there on a recent visit to Edinburgh. We were very well looked after by Jen who was excellent and made a big fuss of our wee dog. Would highly recommend the Haymarket.

We came in for a cider, it was a bit difficult to serve us at the counter. Unfortunately, there was no tea. There are other nicer pubs in Edingurgh, but you can go for one.
