The sparkling afternoon tea was overall decidedly poor. The sandwiches were made of a selection of brioche, wrap and ciabatta bread and the fillings were sparse and bland. I had the end of the wrap which had no filling in and the ciabatta bread was stale! I called the waitress and explained and she apologised and took the plate back to the kitchen. They were replaced by a whole plate of ham and chilli jam ciabatta sandwiches which were a slight improvement on the original! The cakes were mediocre too. Another waitress arrived to take the plates and was again very apologetic and arrived with a complimentary glass of Prosecco. We love afternoon tea when we catch up, however this has to be the most disappointing tea we have ever had. The menu needs to be updated and both the sandwiches and cakes need to be improved to catch up to the quality of other afternoon teas in Newcastle. Come on Crowne Plaza

This had to be the worst afternoon tea ever. Not as described and photographed on the page! Different sandwich fillings, 1 small dry plain scone, dry selection of cake and tea served in a dirty teapot. This is case of false advertising! Website needs to be updated!

Looked forward to visiting The Gin Bar in The Crown Plaza, Newcastle last Saturday. However on entering this bar, we noticed that all tables were covered in empty glasses, although there were few customers. We asked for two Mason’s gins, only to be told that there was only one measure left in the bottle, where was the back-up bottle? We settled for Tanquerey 10, only to be told that they had no fresh lime or lemon. At that point we turned around and left. Staff weren’t bothered. We then headed towards Forth St and stumbled upon a micro pub called Beer Street. Two double gins, beautifully presented £11. Delightful! Well done.

Oh my, what can I say. To say the experience was amazing would not even do justice to the level of service we received from all the staff members but to single out two amazing and lovely people, then I could not praise Kath and Cassidy (from the restaurant) enough. The over all experience was amazing but the 2 girls made it 10, 100, 1000 times better.

We have been blown away tonight by our evening meal! After visiting at the begining of the year and having a few issues, we decided to give it another go and we are so glad we did! There have been so many improvements made since then! The service was amazing (thankyou so much Sara, your amazing at what you do!!!) and the food was very much enjoyed!!! We will be back in the near future

We weren’t staying here unfortunately, but came here to have dinner and were surprised by the quality of food and the kindness of the waitress and waiter. Wonderful fish and very good potatoes! The kids enjoyed their burgers. Highly recommended!

Decided to try Hawthorns for the 1st time for Mothers Day Sunday lunch and was pleasantly surprised . When we arrived there was a pianist playing a small grand piano in the foyer, which i believe happens every Sunday and not just Mothering Sunday. On arrival, we were seated promptly and drinks order taken. Meal was great, 3 courses - All very nice and well presented. Service was good but felt a bit rushed. Efficient can sometimes feel that way. I was chatting to the restaurant manager (New) who couldn't have been nicer. He explained about the live music nights they have in the Gin bar which im going to give a try. All in all a great experience - Nice ambiance - Live music is fab. (They need to publicise this more) Great food. Great Sunday afternoon 5*

Went for Valentines meal. Took half an hour even just to get a drink. Had to ask twice for kids menu (as did the table behind us). They seemed to have a good number of staff on but none voluntarily came over to the table. Had to ask them to clear our table after empty plates sitting for ages. The staff seem to spend all their time crowded round one computer terminal- maybe a more up to date system required? They were constantly setting up tables for new customers without sorting the ones who were there. The food when it came was actually good but the shine had definitely gone off the evening by then. Disappointed

We booked a table as we were also staying in the hotel during a busy GNR weekend. We were pleasantly suprised that there was a special GNR menu, which we went for, it was real vlue for money, and we appreciate it. The meals arrived really hot, fulfilled our appetite. The staff were attentive, we were very happy with our meal, and would highly recommend the restaurant. The 'normal' menu looks amazing, and we spied some of the meals being served which looked 'quality'.

This is our second Sunday lunch at Hawthorns. First time the beef was very tough , Yorkshire puddings we’re over cooked .Starters and dessert were OK . On our second visit we went for the chicken , it was dry and overcooked again thd Yorkshire puddings were again over cooked . Starters and dessert were OK. We’ve had dinner there before and this was fine. The staff were great and service was excellent, shame about the food , we won’t be returning.

Although the menu was limited in choice, the items we chose were available and beautifully cooked without too much waiting around. Tasty too!

We had an afternoon tea today at the Crowne plaza and it was one of the best afternoon teas I’ve been too! The variety was amazing and the staff were the most friendly staff I’ve ever came across especially Michelle who was so caring and amazing! Booked a special offer Sunday lunch which the restaurant were able to honour. Were looked after by George on the booking side and Alex our waitress. The venue, food and service were great and made the family celebration extra special.

The website allowed me to book lunch for the 3 of us during Covid but when we arrived the restaurant was closed however the Manager and staff were absolutely brilliant in accommodating us. They took us into the Gin Bar which wasn’t due to open until 4 hours later, served us drinks and the chef put together 2 large platters of canapés, 1 savoury and 1 sweet for us to nibble on. I can honestly say our socially distancing get together was made so so special by everyone involved at the hotel. A HUGE thank you to all the staff on shift yesterday from Sharon, Linzi & Linda x

We visited for dinner after eating here several times over the years and boy it has now reached rock bottom it was total Kaos and it wasn’t even busy. Young staff couldn’t be bothered,dirty tables, staff looked scruffy with no manners. It was very hard to believe that a 4 star hotel has such a bad restaurant they even got the order wrong even the young girl that was restaurant manager or supervisor was out of her depth no control. So if you are staying here do yourself a favour eat somewhere else till the management of this hotel get the restaurant sorted.

I have just returned from having afternoon tea, and was really looking forward to it. Sadly it was extremely disappointing. 1.We arrived at the restaurant, the staff were at the rear of the restaurant, and clearly saw us, but chose to ignore us, leaving us standing for 10 minutes, a simple recognition and I’ll be with you in a moment is just basic customer service. It all went downhill from there! 2. We were early and asked to be seated, they couldn’t accommodate us in the restaurant, but could in the bar area, this wasn’t an issue, or so we thought! It then took a further 10 minutes for anyone to give us a menu. 3. We asked for tea, after 5 minutes the tea arrived, we poured it and the milk was off, told the waitress, who said she would sort it out, instead of removing the cups and milk left it on the table.After another 5 minutes, we had to put the tea and milk on the bar and ask the bar staff to replace the tea. Again after a wait it arrived. At this point we had been in the hotel for 25 minutes. 4. The food then arrived, 3 finger sandwiches with extremely odd fillings. What should have been salmon, tasted like Shiphams paste. One with red onions and something that I couldn’t distinguish, the last was ham that was so thin and sparse you couldn’t taste it. We had a savoury scone and a fruit scone, no butter!!!! Asked the staff member at the bar, who said she would get some from the restaurant. She then continued to serve, clean and fold napkins for 10 minutes. She then asked another passing staff member to get some butter. Yet another 5 minutes wait. 5. The sweet treats- 2 pre made, hard pastry cases filled with a cream flavoured with mint and a “wild” strawberry ( a giant hard tasteless strawberry) a lemon meringue with basil flavour( not a snif or basil), a hard stale chocolate brownie, and a rhubarb trifle, this was a over sweet rhubarb, covered in tasteless custard and a crumble top??? Just all odd and nasty! Clearly no pastry chef in this hotel. I have to say I was expecting more from this afternoon tea, I have been to many in the local area and far flung! This one was one of the worst. The quality of the food was very poor and the customer service was appalling( some re-training on The basics, and the presence of a manger may be required).

I really can't understand the couple of poor reviews I've seen for the sunday lunch!?? I've visited twice now and the food was beautiful. Nice selection of starters, mains and desserts all cooked/prepared to a high standard. I found the service absolutely fine. Friendly informal and not as stuffy as some places I used to visit like Marco Pierre White. Theres also a nice warm atmosphere in the restaurant too. Well worth a visit I'd say!! I look forward to my next visit!!

Went for a family Sunday lunch with 7 in our party - 2pm booking through a travelzoo deal. Menu a little limited with 3 or 4 options per course, but we started off relatively well on the first course but a 35 minute wait after finishing we still hadn't being approached with our mains - after pointing this out we were told it would be another 10 minutes - on arrival most of the meals were lukewarm at best so after some discussion with the staff we we offered to have the mains cooked again - 20 minutes prep time.... these weren't complex dishes, chicken breast, braised steak etc... after a further wait time with no apology and conscious that we were getting nowhere with maitre de my wife complained to the hotel manager who agreed that our experience hadn't been unsatisfactory and gave us our drinks on the house & wouldn't cash in our vouchers - hence the 2 stars instead of one. Probably best to go elsewhere (Copthorne much better) even if it is a deal.

Can't fault the hotel and spent a great evening in the bar. But ended up paying twice and since then i have emailed and rang and got no answer, so has taken the shine off my stay completely. I was going to start staying here every time i was in Newcastle..i liked the stay so much..but the fight to simply pay the correct rate has put me off.

I booked Sunday lunch via Groupon. 2x adults and 1x kid. It's not the cheapest specially when you have to pay for the kid separately.The atmospher was friendly and cozy. The staff really friendly and happy to help.The food quality was as follows.No fresh squeezed juice available.Kid took from the kids menu (limited choices) fish and chips , quality was below expectation specially too oily.hence unhealthy for kids. The chef should really have dried it well before serving.The soup of the day was good.My wife took roasted chicken which she did not like (very hard)I took the fish dish of the day and it was really lovely.Deserts: we both took chocolates orange cake with fruit and it was average.it did not feel fresh but the fruit was fine.The service was really poor and very slow. No attention for details.My wife ordered chicken and she was given beef instead. After we raised this we immediately got a plate with Checken and brown sauce which feels they just swap the beef with the checken because also the sauce should be creamy from the menu and I presume it should be white. Actually,I've never seen creamy brown sauce before. Anyway, We discussed it and we were reassured it was the right sauce!!!Also you need to ask for everything, glasses, tissue, spoons etc.although it was not busy and enough staff around.All together, it was OK but really below the expectation.

The restaurant was not even busy and it was swarming with staff that looked like they had no clue what they were doing. Once we got our afternoon tea most items were stale, despite being told the wait was because it was being made fresh. I do not recommend coming here purely for how bad the service was, however the below average food was also a massive letdown.

We were staying at the hotel for 4 nights and dined here on the first - Which resulted in us eating out for the following 3 nights. Service was dis jointed & chaotic, the restaurant was cold and so was the food. The menu was pretentious (or tried to be) which actually put us off rather than excite. One chose from the set menu which was a total let down. Really disappointing and poor experience

El almuerzo del domingo de Hawthorns fue una gran decepción. El servicio fue penosamente lento, nos llevó más de media hora llegar dos sopas y el tiempo de nuestros platos principales. Hemos estado en el restaurante dos veces recientemente cuando nos hospedamos en el hotel Crown Plaza y en ambas ocasiones el restaurante ha estado relativamente tranquilo, principalmente lleno de huéspedes de negocios del hotel, lo que parece una pena dado el precio y la calidad de la comida. Mi esposo y yo somos personas muy entusiastas y a menudo comemos en restaurantes muy buenos, así que no esperábamos mucho de un restaurante en un hotel de cadena, pero las dos veces que visitamos la comida ha sido impecable y el personal ha sido muy amable. La primera vez que comimos aquí fue por conveniencia, la segunda fue eso y también porque fue tan bueno la primera vez. Los cócteles también son muy agradables desde el Gin Bar.

Staying at the hotel so decided to eat at the restaurant and wasn't disappointed. Really lovely staff that happily chatted away, giving recommendations that were excellent. The menu is small but all 5 of us ate different things and each was well executed. They had a 4th of July special menu that was fun and very tasty, the waffles being the best thing on the menu. Having learnt we were there to celebrate a graduation they added an extra macaroon treat that went down a treat and made us feel special. Congratulations to our waiter who had also recently graduated! Top night all round.

Tuvimos una deliciosa cena en una noche en la que se llevaban a cabo Proms por toda la ciudad. A pesar de las distracciones, fuimos atendidos muy amablemente con reparte y útil información local. Comimos los cazadores de pollo y una hamburguesa de ternera y médula con deliciosos helados como pudín. Con cafés y un buen Prosecco y vino rosado, esta fue una velada muy agradable.

Average food, very overpriced and had exceptionally slow and poor service even though the restaurant was nearly empty. Failed to even prepare a basic caesar salad. Burger was fine if a little basic. Desert was the only saving grace, although did take 1 hour 45 to get two courses.

It was most definitely my third and last visit today at Hawthorns for afternoon tea at Newcastle Crown Plaza. Each and every time I have visited it hasn't been without a hitch. First time had a nightmare getting through to book a table, I emailed dietary requirements to which the waitress knew nothing about upon arrival, she said whoever takes care of the emails hadn't communicated and she would feed this back. The second time again a nightmare getting through to book, but eventually got there in the end only for a few days later to receive an email to advise the booking had been cancelled, certainly not at my request!! When I rang to ask why my booking had been cancelled they knew nothing about it and unsure as to why I had received the email as was still confirmed on their system. The third and final visit and by far the worst level of customer service I have ever experienced. Tried for 3 days solid to get through by phone to make a booking, each and every time it when straight to answerphone! Left a message with contact tel no- I am still waiting for that call back. I also emailed the hotel asking to make a booking, again still waiting for a reply. Eventually the only way I managed to book was to ring reservations and ask to be put though to Hawthorns. I was transferred through to the front desk who then transferred me to the brasserie. At last I was able to book afternoon tea!! The staff today were lovely, very helpful and polite but I can say I won't be back, quite frankly it is more stressful than it's worth and I can honestly say I don't know how the business stays afloat when nobody can get through to book. On a positive note at least we had the place to ourselves...i wonder why?!

Booked afternoon tea for Mothers day but vised on 27/3/19. Waited 50 mins for the afternoon tea. when spoke to a young gentle man his attitude was appalling when I highlighted this and that he was doing nothing to help with checking on my food he shrugged his shoulders. Spoke to the hotel duty manager who took my email details and advised he would feedback to the gentleman as he had had issues with his attitude before and would email me his resolution. Food when it came out was tasty enough but no reason to wait the time that we did. Still no contact from duty manager

We arrived to a restaurant that only had four tables in use but none made up. We had booked but were asked to wait while a table was set. We were seated at a table for afternoon tea, I said we were here for late lunch and the table was reset. We sat for 15 minutes before I had to ask someone could we order food and drinks.

We visited this restaurant as we staying in the crowne plaza. Lovely decor, very welcoming staff. Food was tasty but the menu was limited, prices were ok for what we had. Couldn’t fault our waiter he very helpful.

Otro 10. minutos y persiguió de nuevo con el supervisor que nos dijo que se estaba colocando. Cuando llegó estaba bien, pero no valía lo que estaba cobrando. Carne De Res Y Arrecife Y Rump Steak. La carne era un poco grasosa, y dos pequeños langostinos para 24 gbp, caros por lo que era. Nos ofrecieron bebidas gratis, lo cual fue apreciado pero estaba manejando, así que no pudimos beber mucho. Era demasiado tarde para que pudiéramos disfrutar de un postre por el tiempo que esperábamos. Incluso obtener la cuenta fue difícil y se agradeció un pequeño gesto de reducción, pero la noche aún se había echado a perder y no lo compensó.

Hemos comido aquí un par de veces antes, hoy es el peor.

Comimos aquí durante su estancia en el Crown Plaza durante el período de Navidad. La comida durante los 3 días fue excelente y el personal era genial. Tuvimos nuestra cena de Navidad aquí y nos trataron como a los VIP que recibieron champán a su llegada y fueron acompañados al bar por canapés. Cuando estuvimos listos, nos acompañaron a nuestra mesa para nuestro almuerzo de 5 platos, donde nos atendieron Stephanie y su equipo. Lo disfrutamos y volveremos pronto

Reservado para cenar anoche con amigos, lo elegí como nunca lo había sido y me lo recomendaron. El restaurante en sí estaba vacío, aparte de otro grupo toda la noche, lo que me preocupó, pero está un poco alejado de todo, pero había una gran fiesta de Navidad en el salón de actos. Los camareros eran educados, la comida era buena pero tibia. Tuvimos que llamar la atención de nuestro servidor, quien se disculpó mucho y cuando llegó el final de la comida, sacaron el costo de los postres de la cuenta y nos gritaron una ronda final de tragos, que muy muy apreciado. Todos estuvimos de acuerdo en que nuestra comida era muy buena, independientemente de los problemas y que volveríamos, tal vez no en Navidad. Creo que se enfocaron más en la fiesta de Navidad de al lado que los pocos que estábamos en el restaurante. Vale la pena una visita, pero he tenido mejor.

Nos alojamos en el hotel y estamos en el restaurante dos veces. Nos pareció que el menú era un poco limitado. Tuve el mero dos veces, ya que no pude encontrar nada más que realmente quisiera, sin embargo, hablando con el personal, el menú cambia de forma regular. Todos disfrutamos lo que teníamos.

Good food, great service and friendly staff

Overall the decor of this place is very impressive, the atmosphere is very good. But the food didn't live up to the standard which you'd expect given the interior and the prices. The service was slow I with training this place can improve, so I'd be willing to give it another try .

Food has wonderful subtle flavours. Service friendly .Not much background noise .Well worth the journey.

The food is overpriced for what you get, which could be forgave if it actually tasted nice..which it did not. It took ages to come and staff were really slow with drinks etc.

As a hotel guest and being wet outside I chose to have dinner here. First I was ignored waiting for a table, then given a table and menu I was ignored further, no offer of drinks, nothing. After 15 mins I left.

Restaurant attached to the Crowne Plaza. Very busy. Staff friendly and food arrived in good time and hot.

Thoroughly enjoyed my meals at Hawthorn's brasserie. Special commendation for Treva whose service was warm, attentive and incredibly friendly. A great example of the highest standard of customer service!

Excellent bar with lots of seating for those who want to have some peace and quiet. I ordered a delicious platter of rustic bread, olives and ham which came very quickly.

good place to eat attached to the Crowne plaza hotel, the fish and chips were really good. Great range of gin.

We visited hawthorns after looking on the restaurant week website. The menu read well and 4 of us ordered from the special priced menu £15 for three courses. Both the food and the service were excellent,balanced flavours with beautiful presentation, all four of us could find nothing to fault. This is a hidden gem in the crown plaza hotel. We have eaten at Marco Pierre white at the indigo hotel and in my opinion hawthorns was as good if not better.

Were looking for a meal close to Newcastle Arena. Hawthorns fitted that description, a mere 5 minutes walk. We booked a table with difficulty as each time I was put through to the restaurant I was asked to leave a message. Eventually a very helpful receptionist made the booking for me.

Having visited this restaurant a lot by staying in the hotel it certainly has lost its way. The menu is now very limited with very little choice and the food poorly presented with no taste or flavours and potions have been reduced in size. The staff and service are still excellent and try hard to make it a enjoyable experience but everything else let’s it down. Sorry can’t recommend Hawthorns anymore and we used to really enjoy it when staying at the hotel.

Lacks atmosphere, has a limited menu, and disappointing wine list. Ate here while staying at the hotel and wished I hadn’t.

We took advantage of restaurant week to sample Hawthorns. It’s not the easiest place to find but it’s at the bottom of the Crowne Plaza hotel.

If the booths are empty, they won't let you sit in them when ordering dinner. The waiting staff think it is acceptable to pass hot food over a babies head. The chef puts far too much salt in food ordered from the children's menu.

A brilliant night from start to finish. We were well looked after by Danny and Mike at the bar. Once in the restaurant Ryan looked after us so well. My elderly parents requirements were catered for, and service was wonderful throughout the evening. Food was delicious. We will be returning to dine there again soon. Thanks to everyone who looked after us. A family celebration made even better!

Decided to try Hawthorns for ne1 restaurant week with my partner. Service was slow...we never got our still water for the table.. for starters I had the soup which was gluten free on the menu but arrived with non gluten free bread. I asked for gluten free bread but by the time it was ready I was finished my soup. My partner's main course of steak was tough despite being asked as medium. We spent over 2 hours there...and we aren't slow eaters.

The four of us pre-booked as part of restaurant week: an enticing £10 for two courses and £15 for three. The menu was appealing including the choices for our vegetarian companion.

Bien, no estoy seguro de si algunas personas han estado yendo en un lugar diferente o delicado, pero de las 10 personas tener ayer el té de la tarde todos estamos de acuerdo en que era preciosa y quedamos muy impresionados! ! El personal era servicial y amable de principio a fin. No como algunas de las opciones de sándwich o podría haber (embarazada) y que no era un problema, ellos eran cambian fácilmente. This is a brilliant restaurant - very reasonably priced. The staff are attentive, friendly and very knowledgeable about their products. Beautiful food!

We visited as a group of 7 and the service was good and the Afternoon tea delicious. The vegetarians were given a good selection of sandwiches and the staff were friendly and attentive.

The staff are amazing Ryan & Robyn looked after us and the service was excellent. The food was fab! would defo recommend to friends and family!

Food was superb, all cooked to perfection. I had the Mussel starter and shoulder of lamb main course. Highly recommend both, so tender it melted in the mouth! Lovely decor too and staff couldnt be more helpful, we both thoroughly enjoyed the visit.

Service was fine even when they were busy. A great deal was presented on the menu about local provenance. The food was good enough, interesting and more than just burgers and fish and chips. We dined twice during our stay.

Afternoon tea was excellent, food and service were both very good, they even boxed up one afternoon tea for my friend who couldn't make it, the staff were cheerful, helpful and efficient.

We have eaten here several times, and have never been disappointed. The food is always top quality, and the staff are very friendly.

I am still waiting patiently for the Manager to call me regarding my experience on Friday 30th September in Hawthorns Brasserie. We booked this approx 2 weeks in advance for my husband's birthday and was really looking forward to trying this relatively new hotel and it's restaurant.

Éramos un grupo de 25 interesado en una reserva del té de la tarde. El personal en Hawthorns fue muy acogedor y encantador para trabajar con!
