Secluded and very chic hideaway. A real hidden gem with a great chef and art deco interior. One of my new favourite places to recommend. Lots of amazing, less trodden trails to discover on the doorstep too.

What an amazing find! I’ve been living in the Lakes for over 10 years and never been to this amazing restaurant before it’s like it’s a secret. A stunning setting with a romantic view over the lake and fine dining to go with it. The dishes were exciting and interesting - my favourite being the beef fillet with the scallops a close second … one of which we cooked at the table! The strawberry dessert was incredible but even better than the location and food was the very impressive table service - thank you to the whole team for making our dinner so special.

Charming, modest size hotel in a quiet location with stunning views over the reservoir. Quirky art deco feel gives the Haweswater a unique atmosphere. Friendly staff. Good food. Thoroughly recomended.

One of the most breathtaking views from any hotel I’ve stayed in but sadly there were a couple of staff that were rude and unwelcoming - the manager being one of them and when there’s a bad apple it affects the whole atmosphere. The rest of the staff were wonderful 🙌. The food was amazing, particularly the Greenway menu, so delicious 🤩

Because I had made a mistake with booking !we had to pay extra for the only available room ,on second floor ,with double bed and single bedroom plus extra bed in sitting room area.£373 .( or close to this ) for one night .Wed driven down from Scotland and it was late 7:30 ish so were gratefulr the last room . Wed e xpected it to be splendidly wonderful but were dissapointed . We had to carry our cases to our room for that amount youd expect a little help . The lady who showed us the room said it was ready …. There was no phone to contact reception .We had to fix the loo seat as it was too loose to sit on ! £373 .The room was ok it had veiws of a dark lake and ( for me ) oppressive mountains leaving only a few in hes of sky above . The tea tray had 6 longlife milks only ….. We went down to eat …only the £60 + tasting menu available .I have special diet and eventually was able to have a dairy free sandwich made ,that was all as the bar menu had also finished .The young girl who served us couldnt have been more helpful . And so to bed .The shower driped rather than showered and the temperature was intermittent .Plenty Of towels which were clean .Coming up from behind the loo was a draft od cool air ,underneath the sink the pipe cover was hanging off ! The wooden floor needed attention .TV had few channels but did have Net Flix bearing in mind we had paid £373 ,we were told to pay extra for Net Flix . Furniture might have been period but was scruffy and needed some tlc .Very dissapointing . However the bed was comfortable but rooms so hot as central heating on full blast and not able to turn off as valve fixed open .Slept with all windows open . PILLOWS WERE DISGUSTING ! This stained fibre filled old scruffy pillows not a feather in sight .I ended up having to use a cushion .. Bed was comfortable . The other two beds in suite were not made up ,one was just a mattress .£373 ! Door at top of stairs wasnt a fire door ( but Im no expert pert ) Down for breakfast ,just stood at entrance to dining room waiting ,finally someone turned up and told us to sit anywhere ,no explanation of breakfast but I assumed we just helped ourselfs ??? Menu for breakfast was good .Food was good but no one asked if we wanted toast !or more tea or coffee or anything elce ….no hospitality Doors at top of stairs were not fire doors !!( but I might be wrong ) We then came to check out and had to wait for someone to come and off we went . Poor sevice . It isnt what its pretending to be ,is highly overpriced and I wouldnt recommend anyone to stay there . No value for money . But the bed was comfortable !so was the bed in a quirky friendly hotel in Scotland for £81 !!!

Beautiful location and building but in need of some TLC. After an 8 hour hike we were looking forward to a hot soak in a bath. The water pressure was such that it would literally take hours to run a bath which would of course then be cold! Excuse from staff “ it’s an old hotel you know”! Light switches in bathroom not working properly- staff sorted bathroom lights out whilst we were dining only to leave bedroom door unlocked. TV in bedroom didn’t work - no signal. I wonder if this hotel ever gets inspected as clearly much to do . Staff seem disinterested in their roles. A large bar area with no draught beers. Breakfast was however excellent with attentive good service and good selection available- it was a different team to evening before.

Sometimes you find a special place that ticks all the boxes and we certainly found it here. Set in most idilic location, surrounded by nature, peace and stunning modern additions of the sculptures. Stepping through the doors of Hawkeswater is both like returning home and also stepping back in history. However, with all the additions of modern day living the 1937 bar is most relaxing place for lunch or a dram after a day of adventures in the local area. Mark Greenaway provides the most delicious menu, a menu where you can’t have a favourite dish as they just keep coming and complimenting the previous outstanding morsel. Service is attentive without distracting which is a fine art, as a hotelier I walked away in awe of the standards at this hotel and genuinely cannot wait to return. Team Haweswater, keep doing what you’re doing as you’re providing better service than some of the best known global hotels in a setting that cannot be beaten. Simply, thank you.

We spent our honeymoon at the Haweswater. It's a beautiful art deco hotel with wonderful lovingly selected genuine pieces of this area. The scenery with the reservoir and the near fells it's absolutely breathtaking. We couldn't have found a better place to escape the world. The rooms are unique and cosy with wonderful views over the stunning scenery. The fireplaces are warm and inviting. It's a jewel, it feels a little bit like travelling back to the 30ies. The only thing missing to make this time travel perfect is the staff. If they would dress accordingly to fit in the art deco theme it would be perfect. For tea time I had the best scones ever in my entire life. Freshly baked out of the oven, melting in the mouth. Delicious!!! I was lucky to have them because I asked. There is no hint, that they offer scones for tea-time. What a missed opportunity! Please Haweswater, place a good visible sign outside that you have freshly baked scones and that dogs are welcome, I bet you would be run over. Another missed opportunity is the bar. I saw the drinks menu online, but no easy to read board offering drinks or cocktails at the bar. A pity. And I personally, missed fresh pressed ale. As you have 2 restaurants, maybe it would also be an idea to have one, a little bit more exclusive with a dress code, the other one casual. The Haweswater is a beautiful, stunning hotel and we will definetely be back! It's a raw diamond that only needs a little bit of polish in my point of view. Thank you, Haweswater, for having us!!!

My partner and I stayed for two nights on our last leg of our honeymoon. Twice I’d sent emails to the hotel asking for the possibility of having flowers for the room, but did not receive any response, so that was very poor service and let me down. The whole hotel is in need of a total deep clean and standards should be much better. The price for what you get is very high too and the only good thing is the location. Move the hotel a few miles away and it would be forgotten. We went into the bar restaurant on the second evening to get a drink and food, but after being totally ignored for over twenty minutes, we gave up. The hotel takes advantage of its rustic look, but there’s a difference between run down and dirty to looking rustic. Everything is over priced for what it is and it is also not easy to park to get your bags out of the car into the hotel. We ended up being parked on a steep slope as the small attached car park was full. Litter was dropped outside by someone delivering, which was still there the day we left and various staff had walked by this. The staff seem to be spiking or similar and it seems to be run on a cheap budget but asking high prices for rooms and food. Unfortunately I don’t have any positives to say other than the location. Good luck if you stay here.

Really lovely hotel! I booked for my partner’s birthday and we stayed in one of the balcony rooms the view was absolutely stunning, it was worth every penny. The location is a bit out of the way from the popular areas at the lakes but we didn’t mind the drive. We’d recommend ordering from the bar menu instead of the restaurant the food is just as nice (if not nicer) but so much cheaper!

My boyfriend and I stayed for two nights this weekend and absolutely loved it. We came to the hotel quite late at night and it was pitch dark to even imagine what the surroundings would look like, so when we woke up in the morning, we couldn't believe how beautiful the location was. Truly magical, and it's definitely worth a visit to switch off from a busy city life. The staff was great, super helpful and attentive. I think as the hotel is quite small and cosy, they tend to remember everyone staying and accommodate to their preferences. Highly recommend booking dinner at the restaurant, the food was 10/10. Incredible taste and great serving. Overall, super happy with the decision to come here for the Easter weekend. Even a 6-hour drive from London was worth it!

We spent two nights at the Haweswater hotel in Feb 2024. The location is superb for peace & quiet / a recharge. The staff were very attentive and genuinely friendly. The art deco interior gives the hotel a unique feel. The rooms are comfortable and warm, with fantastic views (if facing the reservoir). Overall a lovely stay - thank you. Whilst our overall impression / experience was very positive, I did feel the room rate was more than I felt was justified and would thus on balance not hurry back. We paid for a two bedroom suite (the Dun Bull) but had to pay a £25/night surcharge to have our son use the second bedroom. There was no kids menu (some smaller options were verbally offered after asking) which felt somewhat unwelcoming given printing a simple menu would be an easy thing to do.

I had the pleasure of staying a night and also experiencing Mr Mark's food. The service was amazing. The lady that booked us in was also our waitress at dinner and she was amazing. I forgot her name, but she was so nice to everyone. The room was quirky and had a brilliant art deco feel with an old Bakelite phone and everything. The food was outstanding. It looks expensive but it is well worth it. Well done Mr Mark, you did us proud. Go and try it... It's the closest you'll get to being in peace and quiet in the lakes. I'd love to go again....I can even fix your TVs if you'd like x

I have stopped here many times for a drink and a couple of times for food. I have eaten in the bar and had very good hoke cooked lasagne, a generous portion too. I have also eaten in the restaurant and enjoyed a steak that was cooked just as asked and would recommend to others. A good selection of beers on draught. Will certainly be visiting again soon as is one of the better pubs over the options in Penrith itself.

4 of us ordered food, 2 jackets, 1 combi platter which all felt like frozen items fried and served with salad, not great but not terrible either. I ordered a cheese and onion pie with gravy as it was on the menu, I just said pie and pointed to it so didn't think to specify, 25 minutes wait later our food turned up and I got cottage pie put in front of me, they offered to change it for me but because everyone else had their food after a wait I felt obligated to accept it and it wasn't nice, the mince had clearly been defrosted as the mince beef clumped up. Felt really shitty eating it as I really fancied a cheese pie. The server hadn't bothered to clarify which pie I wanted not did they repeat the order back to us as the order was taken, poor customer service if you ask me. We won't be back. The venue was nice, the staff were friendly but oversights like this ruin the experience. Cottage pie would have been the last thing I would have ordered, I really really dislike it, but of course I'm too English to send it back. Nor did they offer to knock anything off the bill for the mess up.

Popped in for some drinks after I couldn't find a coffee shop that was open and I'm delighted they were all closed. This was a great little bar, with some wonderful beers on offer, both locally produced and by some of the UK's best breweries. Great to know this is here next time I'm in the area!
