We arrived and were greeted by staff to sit down at a table. Upon arrival, it states that you must wait to be seated. The waiting staff member did not tell us we needed to go to the barista bar to order. Confused, we sat there waiting for around 20 minutes and said “excuse me” to a waiting staff member, who ignored us and moved to the table behind to chat and clear up. This was our first visit, and we should have been notified about the ordering process. This is also not stated in the menu booklet. We assumed, because you were greeted and waited to be sat down, that it was table service and were not told otherwise. The staff member who ignored us said “thank you” as we left having just been left there. It is fair to say we will not be going back.

Beef and gravy sandwich in sliced white bread. Just made the whole thing sloppy. The beef was slightly under cooked and made chewable by being thinly sliced on a machine. Beef was tasteless, the industrial mix gravy was what carried any flavour. I say industrial mix as it’s the same gravy for the liver and you could see a flour residue in the gravy boats(not nice) coffee was okay. I understand you have to cut back to prevent price rises. However they’ve gone too far

Called up prior to arrival to ask about a table and was told fully booked, however they take walk ins but can’t guarantee how long would have to wait for a table as it would be between bookings (like if someone only used 45 mins of their 1.5 hour slot we could use the other 45 mins). As it was only my mum wanting a Sunday lunch, and me a coffee/cake, decided this was ok and it was a nice day so wouldn’t mind waiting. Did the half hour drive from Whitburn to be told when getting there by another member of staff that no we don’t do walk ins at all. Wouldn’t entertain anything other. Plenty nice tables outside in sun so we sat there and had cake and coffee as not worth doing the drive for absolutely nothing (unsure why we couldn’t just have lunches outside?) which was nice enough, but annoyed that I had made the half hour drive with the complete wrong information. We bought a couple of things at the farm shop - all the notices up outside the doors about shoplifters are extremely off putting and not in keeping with a quality establishment at all, we visit a lot of farm shops and never seen this before. Sure every shop has thieves which are dealt with as appropriate, but no need to plaster numerous notices and cctv print offs all over your entrance doors. Made me feel like I was having a jaunt out to a council estate. Note - we got there 11.50am and left 12.40pm, in that time there was loads of tables inside still free so we could have had my mums dinner and been and out before the 1pm bookings arrived. I personally wouldn’t return because of the information given which wasted an hour round trip, and the tacky shop lifter notices.

We called into the farm shop today and bought 3 different chicken pies from the deli counter. A chicken and mushroom, a chicken and leek and a chicken curry pie. They were the most driest pies in the world. Not one of them had any sauce or moisture to them what so ever, just dry limps of chicken in all three. I’ve never been so disappointed. It would have been more enjoyable to eat a pie filled with dust! All three pies were binned.

We went to the Farm cafe and had the most tastiest cheese n onion toasties ever ever. The cafe has always been good but what’s happened to it now is amazing. The toasty was fresh brown bread and filled to overflowing with onions cooked in cider and thyme and 3 types of cheeses including applewood ( my favourite) and a Swiss cheese. I asked if I could buy the cheeses in the shop but alas no, they weren’t available. After really noticing the difference in cafes’ menus now with the world situation affecting businesses really badly and them having to cut down on food and choices, the farm has an abundance of different tastes and choices. The chef(s) are doing an amazing job and the food deserves a Michelin star. The staff are always very pleasant and helpful and the food and meat choices in the shop are abundant. As always, we loved it.

Nice atmosphere, getting really busy as we were leaving around 12, only negative was there was no scones to be had, it was a matter of whatever cakes were available which we didn’t want, just fancied something savoury. We’ve now tried the doggy friendly part of the cafe a couple of times on top of numerous visits to the main cafe and shop. I think some of the reviewers on here must have forgotten to take their meds before leaving the house! The service was friendly and attentive (both to the humans and their doggy mistress) with very pleasant staff. We both had a light(ish) lunch - I had an absolutely superb German hot dog with fries, all very very tasty and well presented. My better half had scrambled egg on (two large doorsteps of) toast with bacon, which she thoroughly enjoyed. I must admit I had a mouthful of the egg and it was perfectly cooked. To those who criticise cost, I’d rather pay a couple of quid more for quality in nice surroundings than cheap and cheerful. Will be back next week.

First time we’ve been here since Covid restrictions were introduced. The location is good, surrounded by countryside views. Large (potholed) car park. Effectively single car width entry as disabled bays completely take up one side of the road. We had two flat white coffees and a bacon sandwich. Flat whites were less than average quality - £3.15 each. Basically filter coffee with a splash of milk. Quality of the coffee wasn’t great. A bitter aftertaste. Not recommended and overpriced. Filter coffee is, let’s be honest, the cheapest way to prepare coffee and that’s how the coffee tasted. Cheap. Bacon sandwich was £3.50. The bread bun was cheap, tasteless & lacking any texture. An odd choice of bread for a venue with it’s own bakery in my opinion. Surely bread baked on site would add to their USP? The cafe area is pleasant and spacious. Staff were pleasant and friendly. We were optimistic when we arrived that the quality of coffee and food would reflect the surroundings. Unfortunately neither did. We won’t be returning.

We have been here before and had really nice meals. The fish and the beef sandwiches are very good. On this visit we tried something different and had the Vietnamese pancake. Unfortunately it was very dry and not very appetising. As a constructive criticism perhaps some soy sauce or additional sauce would have helped. The chips also were not up to par. A lot of overcooked bits in our portions. We’re sure it was just an off day as the food is usually very good. Staff were very friendly as usual. Will be back but will stick to known meals.

The owners should read the reviews & take action, because they can’t possibly know how badly wrong it’s going and keep doing the same thing. Just over a year ago, everyone was singing its praises - so they’re capable of getting it right. There are signs up asking people to be kind to staff, dated August, so they must know something is wrong. There are too many waiting staff and not enough staff in the kitchen. Long, long wait for Sunday lunch, which is probably best described as disappointing. Whoever is in charge needs to hand over to someone else for a while, before it’s too late and all the goodwill that I read in other older reviews disappears.

I bought Christmas lunch takeaway for the family on Christmas day. My daughter with her children was in isolation and my 90 year old father was also isolating, and I was spending Christmas alone, so we were looking forward to a nice lunch to cheer us all up. Unfortunately, we very disappointed with it. In fact , 3 of us couldn’t eat it and threw it away. My Dad managed a little bit. I emailed them to complain and listed my concerns about the dinner, and their response was incredulous! They said they found it ‘hard to believe’ because they’d had good feedback from other customers. Absolutely no customer care at all! The whole horrible experience cost us £60.00.The service on the day was awful as well as the woman in the gift shop was very rude and unfriendly, even bordering on confrontational. All I did was ask where to go to pick up the dinners!I’ll never go back there. Such a shame because we often enjoyed a meal there. What has happened to you Homer Hill.

Abhorrent customer service and antiquated ideas about how a business should be run. The traditional queue for Christmas meat from the farm butchers. What could possibly go wrong? Well several things, it was impossible to reach these jokers on the phone to determine if it was too busy to come and collect my order. Can you allocate one of the umpteen staff you have milling about behind the counter to answer customer phonecalls? When I placed the order initially over the phone, I should have realised what an unprofessional system I’d had the misfortune to come across. No order number or confirmation that I’d actually ordered anything (despite paying £10). I waited over 1 hour 30 minutes in total with my daughter in the rain and cold queuing outside to pick the order up. This was alongside elderly customers who were all very cold and wet as well. There was no indication from outside how long I would need to queue for, or any management of the queue. There was one member of staff assigned to stand at the door to let the right number of people inside. Why not actually get him to occasionally walk down the line of cold, shivering people outside and inform them of an approximate queuing time, apologise ? Doesn’t have to be exact but an ‘it’s about 45 minutes from here’ would work?. When you do actually get inside the shop you realise the reason for the incredibly slow movement of customers. They have a further queue inside and from this unhappy vantage point you can see the actual counter staff working with absolutely no sense of urgency given the number of people waiting. It’s like their making a cup of tea on a Sunday morning. The social distancing measures are woeful. Most people were crowded up together in the queue as there was no floor markings to denote the correct distance to stand. After finally getting to the front of the queue I was greeted by someone who was asking customers if they’d had a game of hopscotch on the only thing they do have marked on the floor - a hopscotch board. How about instead of drawing hopscotch boards you actually mark the social distancing out correctly?!At this point I was very angry with the very poor management and treatment of CUSTOMERS. I asked to speak to the manager. This was met with a look as though I had done something wrong. I was initially told the ‘manager’ was busy. Eventually she did totter out only to perform what has it be in my experience the worst customer service I’ve ever seen or heard. Guys, you really need to go on a course or something here because this is appalling. When I raised the issues I had of my bad experience I was told ‘that’s the best we can do’ ‘you’d have to queue for Asda just the same’ (nope) and ‘it’s COVID , we are doing our best’. No mate you’re not doing your best, or even close. In the space of 30 seconds and on the spot I gave the ‘manager’ some alternatives which are far safer for COVID and more efficient:Have a separate queue for people who have just ordered and want to collect food, instead of a mix of people who want to shop at the farm (‘we can’t, we’re a shop what do you expect us to do’). This would speed the whole debacle up.What about collecting a number and putting your car registration on a list on arrival and then your order is brought to your car and paid by contactless card when it’s ready? (‘I don’t have enough people to do that’) - you mean you can’t be bothered to manage them properly? How about the guy on the door talking about his holidays and finish time actually patrolling the queue and informing people that it’s about 30 minutes from here, an hour from here etc (‘well I don’t know how long people are going to take in the shop, how can I?’ - well, genius, you go outside (!), take some form of timer and start it at the point one of your (unfortunate) customers is at. When they reach the front, record the time. Do that two or three times you have an average queuing time. Space age thinking huh?Unfortunately all my suggestions were met with the same dismissive attitude. For sanity’s sake, don’t shop here. Merry Xmas!

Called in for a quick bite to eat with the other half & made to feel most welcome BUT more importantly “Made to Feel Safe” by our waitress Heather. She explained everything very clearly to us then took us to our table. Food was excellent as always, with the chips being among the best I’ve had anywhere and the scones & cakes are to die for! Just wish some of the other visitors would abide by the rules! People “trying” to get access and clearly not from the same household! Shocking behaviour! Even popped into the Farm Shop for a few bits on our way out. OMG the Fillet Steak is out of this world! Such a large selection of their own produce with a selection of sausages to make anyone’s mouth water! Will 100% definitely be back (When we get the chance!!).Thank You to all the Hard Working Staff who are just trying to “do their bit & play by the Governments rules” and keep everyone safe. See you all again soon. Stay Safe, Take Care & Keep Up The Good Work

We are loyal customers to both the shop and the cafe for many years, however on our last few visits the customer service we have received from some of the female staff in the cafe has been atrocious. In short, some staff are rude, surly and incredibly unfriendly. The cafe food and farm shop produce has always been of a really high standard and good value, unfortunately it is certain waitresses serving the food that lets the cafe down. I took a friend to the cafe last week who had not been before - I was embarrassed that I had suggested coming here because of the poor service we received. We were made to feel like a total inconvenience.Current times are incredibly hard and we want to support local businesses as much as possible, however some of the waitressing staff in the cafe are making this hard to do. I can see that I am not the only person who has felt the need to leave a review here regarding the incredibly poor attitude of some of the staff in the cafe.

Beware - if you go into the shop and request to use the toilet a very rude older women will tell you bluntly no. Instead of asking for name a number so you can. They also allow the restaurant customers use the toilet no problem. But spend £50 in the overpriced farm shop and your made to feel like a second class citizen by a rude member of staff. Older women cleaning the floor. Never use the place again as this really upset me. Disgraceful policy

This is still a great little place for breakfast, brunch or lunch. COVID-19 rules are well adhered to, so no worries there, and numbers in the coffee shop and farm shop are reduced. The staff are as friendly as ever, menu is restricted but food is as good as always. Please give it a try and support your local businesses, you won’t be disappointed. Take aways are available too.

Called into homer hill farm shop for couple of things.. was a bit worried with it being a small shop but I needn't have worried.. the staff in the shop have it set out so social distancing is adhered to, everyone was wearing face coverings and only 5/6 in shop at any one time.. I got my items and was served by a lovely member of staff, nothing was a bother.. being lunchtime I asked if the cafe was open, it was, same again I felt very safe, gave all my details for track and trace.. table service only as per the rules.. i had a hot beef sandwich and chunky chips, I have to say it was delicious, the beef was lovely and tender cooked in gravy.. real gravy, no gravy granules used here and the chips were the chunkiest ever, lovely cooked and crispy... I'll defo be back with my family so they can experience it too.. thank you staff of homer hill farm shop/cafe

Visited today for the first time since pre-lockdown and all I can say is wow! The service, food and cleanliness was outstanding to say the least.Me and my husband arrived and were promptly greeted and seated by a member of staff in full protective equipment (unlike some other venues I’ve visited recently) and asked to fill out track and trace information which instantly put us at easy. Our order was taken at the table and the food came quickly and was piping hot. I had the hot beef sandwich with chips which was AMAZING. The beef was juicy and the gravy so flavoursome, you can tell it’s homemade! The chips here are also my favourite, big and chunky but also crispy. I couldn’t fault it. My husband got the cheeseburger which was also lovely and juicy and came with chips too. It didn’t last long so he obviously enjoyed it! The potions aren’t to be knocked either, can guarantee I’ll never leave haswells hungry. We couldn’t resist and got some cake to take home and wasn’t disappointed when we finally got round to eating it. Sorry there’s no pics, we were too fast to eat it Overall really impressed with our visit. The staff are friendly and obviously following gov guidance on cleaning as the place was spotless. We did see the staff cleaning every surface after the table near to us left. Even the chairs which id not seen before. Tables are also spaced so you’re socially distanced. I felt very safe and protected whilst visiting. We loved it so much we booked in for Sunday lunch this weekend - I can’t wait!!

Visited today was greeted by the most rude miserable waitress I have ever encountered . She barked “ how many households” from through the door - there were 2 of us . Huffed and puffed as we hadn’t booked - there were 2 other tables occupied . Asked for menu fo be Told “ there’s no menu there’s drinks and cakes” . Obviously you have to be psychic to know what these are and what these cost! Ordered 2 drinks - latte was nothing but warm milk and tea was fine . Waitress then came over and said you have 10 minutes this table is booked .We were going to come back and eat at a later date but won’t ! Rudest staff!

I have visited here many times over the years and have always enjoyed the food but today I was very disappointed. I know things are different due to COVID 19 but we had to wait 35 minutes for food to arrive only for it to be luke warm with no apology . This has really upset me especially when I had my 90 year old mother with us for a treat. Also, we have had fish and chips on several occasions and the portions were huge, however, today the portion was half the size. Think it will be a long time until I revisit.

I visit here often with family & friends and the food is always nice for breakfast but I have noticed that some staff members need to learn some serious customer service skills and how to smile! I would like to mention that the young gentleman who waited on us the odd time during our breakfast was lovely and actually looked like he enjoyed his job. However, the waitress who greeted us at the door with an abrupt "how many households" rather than a hello didn't exactly set the right impression for the cafe. Another waitress also rolled her eyes when we asked her for condiments and the bill! I understand that these are difficult times for people in the hospitality/retail industry and businesses are having to adjust, but don't take it out on the customers who are actually continuing to support your business despite the current times.

We use the shop and love the food there. We also have had lovely Sunday lunches and afternoon teas. The Covid set up is very good and well organised. Today I had a breakfast and was surprised there was a surcharge to have scrambled rather than fried eggs because I was told they use cream. Never come across an extra charge to have scrambled eggs on a breakfast - ever (and I’ve had a few).If I was having a coffee and ran out of cream/milk I wouldn’t expect, nor would I pay, for an extra jug? You should not be charged a ‘cream tax’ for scrambled eggs - it’s a yolk!

Found the farm shop whilst out for a drive it looked really nice so we stopped for a cuppa. Not sure how long the cafe and shop have been open since lockdown they still seem to be getting used to new ways of operating. Went into the cafe first we were told to sit down not move about only to use the toilet if necessary and there would be a long wait to give our order I mention this because we all have to accept the new rules and I believe the staff are still adjusting and are probably very nervous so let’s not be to judgemental if staff seem a little curt. We ordered drinks and cake which was all really nice we happily gave our contact details again this something we all need to get used to. Onto the shop the list of who can and can’t go in does seem a little over the top we did go in as a couple it was quiet but I’m sure not letting families in is a good idea children aren’t a threat and older couples like us always shop together maybe the rules will relax as time goes on. The shop has a lovely selection of fresh food and the pies are delicious also a good variety of dry goods and jams and chutney as well as some gift ideas. Lovely trip out to both the shop and cafe. Please allow for the strange times we live in the staff must be under enormous pressure and they have lives and families they want to keep safe and well. Will definitely go back to this farm shop and would recommend it if your in the area.

We visited the shop today, my husband, daughter(8yrs) and myself Obviously the shop has restrictions with covid but I was appalled the way I was spoken to twice and very offended by the signs outside, it's our first visit so we didnt realise until we arrived there was only one person allowed in the shop, this was until we read the sign,NO FAMILIES, NO COUPLES, NO CHILDREN, 1 PERSON IN SHOP AT ONE TIME. We waiting in the que and my husband went in first while I stood with my daughter till he chose what he wanted, I was confronted first by a very unfriendly female who shouted over to myself NO CHILDREN ALLOWED! I informed her I could read and my husband was already in the shop, then two minutes later I was confronted again by another female, very rude again, she informed me Shes not allowed in(my daughter that is) my daughter was quite upset by this stage asking why she wasnt allowed in the shop, once my husband came out to look after my daughter I went in to find 6 customers already in!!! These females really made us feel discriminated against for being a family of 3, never will I return to this very unfriendly place.

We went here for brunch, having stayed overnight nearby. My son and husband shared a sausage sandwich and bacon sandwich between them and I had poached eggs on toast. The sandwiches were actually in soft rolls, but maybe that's a dialect thing we're not aware of.The bread used for toast wasn't my cup of tea due to the tight doughy nature of it, but I might just not be used to posh bread! The milkshakes ordered by the boys weren't actually milkshakes, but milk with flavouring in them which isn't the same thing, but were still enjoyed. My latte came with the espresso on the side so I could make it to my own strength.Whilst not cheap,we enjoyed our food and drink and this looked a lovely place to spend time. We will probably come again when we next visit the Durham area.

We came here for lunch whilst en route to Yorkshire. We know the area fairly well but hadn’t tried this cafe before. The car park was busy which seemed to be an encouraging sign. We ordered a cheese sandwich, chips, braised beef and falafel. The cheese was stale on the edges and was pretty overpowering (beware if you don’t like very strong cheddar) There was also just far too much of it in the sandwich. Most of it was left untouched. The chips were so greasy that they were inedible. My husband’s dish had a Yorkshire pudding which was frozen in the middle!! He sent it back and was given another without even a whisper of an apology! In fact I didn’t find the staff to have very positive attitudes at all; there was no check back or query as to why a lot of food had been left and there were no smiles when the food was delivered to the table. Disappointing and we won’t be back.
