Hartleys Kitchen in Mendip

In these days of inflation and financial difficulties for "Eating Places" we find many of our pubs and restaurants stuggling to even stay open. So...come here to Hartleys Bistro, go back in time to fabulous food, tremendous service and, would you believe it, reasonable prices. One thing tells you how good place is, and that is customers. We had a lovely Sunday Lunch and the place was packed! Mine Host is a lovely chap and very welcoming. Lots of great people eager to look after you. This is now our 'go-to' for family gathering. If you happen to be in Wells or Radstock, or have stayed in The Little Shire, then don’t miss this very nice and relaxing restaurant. The staff and owner are all friendly and the place is warm and homely.

Loved stumbling across this place on route back to South Wiltshire. Had a lovely breakfast made with really good quality ingredients. Eggs were unreal.

Fabulous lunchtime meal with friends today- Chicken, stuffing and Cranberry pie to die for followed by amazing cheesecake. Was very busy so quite a wait for food but SO worth the wait!

Aways a friendly welcome, and the food is delicious. Menu varies constantly, and there is always a good choice, at a very reasonable price. A very popular place so best to book and reserve a table. I would rate the service from the Staff as five star also. Dinning there is such a pleasurable experience

Thank you Hartleys. My phone booking with Paul at short notice enabled our large (20) motorcycle group to be seated, and the conversation came over as nothing would be a problem for the following morning. We arrived to be warmly greeted by Paul and all served lovely Sunday breakfasts. Cannot fault the service, attentive staff and the overal atmosphere. Obviously a cafe owner with business sense, as we all put orders in and the friendly waiting staff were efficient at getting us seated and fed, with regular coffee top ups. Other dietary requirements were met by some of our group too. A fantastic and convenient refreshment stop if travelling around the Mendips, Cheddar, Shepton etc. Thank you.

Impromptu stop that uncovered this little gem. Fresh, beautifully cooked plaice and a long marinated lamb tagine. Very generous pour of an Italian Pino Grigio. Lovely, friendly and professional staff. Highly recommend.

Have recently discovered Hartleys and what a gem. Our first experience was a quick stop off for lunch with parents and thoroughly enjoyed our selections of dishes. The steak and kidney pie was delicious and served with fresh veg cooked to perfection. The food was so good we returned a couple of weeks later with a large family group for one of the legendary Sunday roasts. Everyone loved the food and all said they will return. The atmosphere is friendly and relaxing. All of the staff are helpful and again friendly. Paul and Lynda are super hosts who look after their customers. The cafe itself reminds me very much of a little French bistro, the sort that you discover on your travels around France, quirky on the inside with fantastic food. The only difference is this one is in the middle of the Somerset countryside. Really looking forward to our next visit!

I have always loved coming here because the owner and the staff are very friendly and accommodating. The food is fantastic and the menu changes quite regularly. You will find that they have special evenings and you can join their list and will be kept informed of any future events by email. They also welcome well behaved dogs and love to see them. It's better to book because it does get very busy here. You can even have the lovely afternoon tea with sandwiches and cake etc which makes a wonderful gift for friends and family on birthdays.

Fabulous Sunday Lunch. Friendly staff. I like the way the owner navigates around the tables chatting to his guests. The atmosphere is perfect, not too posh not too cafe. Lovely to see the log fire too.

Planned to eat there last week but was told at the door it was bookings only!! No mention of this on their website. Fortunately the Mendip Inn was only a mile away and the food there was excellent.

I love this place. Always so friendly and the food is always great. I've never had a disappointing meal here. Even when we turned up in the awkward time between services they still made us a perfect fry up :)

I had the Portuguese Fish pie (no pastry - more like a chowder with an amazing topping). My partner has the roast. Tasty, very very tasty.

Yet another most enjoyable visit. Sunday roast very good and the crumble made from home grown apples delicious. Thank you Paul and all your excellent staff.

We booked up for the Indian buffet night & it was amazing!!! These nights are very rare apparently but it didn't disappoint. We've been to hartleys quite a few times now & the food & service is always brilliant, would highly recommend

The best Sunday roast around! You feel so welcome, and the food is incredible. A three course meal has got to be done just to experience as much great food as possible.

What a lovely cafe. I was made to feel very welcome and had a lovely breakfast. The homemade pancakes with apple and bacon were great and refills on the filter coffee went down a treat. There is a peaceful ambience and a good choice of background music. Dog friendly too.

Afternoon tea to celebrate a birthday. Sandwiches were super fresh with a delightful assortment of fillings. Fresh cream and strawberry jam scones and gorgeous strawberry and fresh cream tartlets. Thoroughly recommended. I forgot to take a "before" photo....🤣

What a fabulous hidden gem. We noticed Hartley's on the way home and decided to stop for coffee. We were welcomed like the customers they'd been looking forward to seeing all day. The food was terrific, cooked in an open kitchen so you can see everything. There were loads of people coming in for lunch, who were obviously regular customers. My BLT was packed with bacon and really tasty. You could not fault the service and every single member of staff looked happy to be working there. There was an open fire, the decor was delightfully quirky, out of another era and totally charming and cosy. My first visit will not be my last.

Very friendly establishment and plenty of choice available

5 of us visited for a family Sunday roast dinner. Starters were all good, roasts were lovely with plenty of choice and lots of veg. A small selection of desserts, the ones we chose were really lovely. The waitresses were attentive and friendly. No complaints at all. Would visit again

Lovely cafe, food is great, coffee is good and strong and staff so friendly. Log burner in the restaurant makes it nice a toasty during the winter 👌 Good selection on the menu and they are always happy to offer off menu choices

Not long moved to the area and this is THE place for an AMAZING breakfast! They also do excellent lunches, the Sunday roast just can't be beatean. Service is always warm and excellent. You'd be advised to book as they do understandably get very busy....

The owner is lovely. 7 years ago, as a child, I told him I wanted to start cooking - at the time I was cooking meals for my family once a week. He took me to the kitchen, showed me around and gave me a massive bulb of garlic as a souvenir. The atmosphere is brilliant, and I've shared many family gatherings here. It's definitely a nice bistro to try out if you're in the area.

Lovely roast beef Sunday lunch and all the trimmings with my grandchildren. We all enjoyed our lunch. So nice to have a dish of vegetables when so many restaurants skimp on these.

Fancied some breakfast so decided to Google it as I'm not from the area and this gem came up. Greeted by friendly staff and a very friendly dog. Good service. I've had many full English breakfasts and none have really stood out. It's only a breakfast.... But for some reason this time it was just so much better than normal. Great breakfast. Good coffee.

Stopped here for breakfast, the kippers and poached egg with granary toast was excellent as well as the cheese, ham and chilli omelette. Very good coffee. The place was busy and service was good with friendly staff. Will be returning.

Owner/ manager hovered over most people like Basil Faulty. I was treated as invisible not asked if I wanted drinks etc. Others on same table were overwhelmed with enquiries. Food was mediocre and not value for money. Dry and tasteless. Waitresses were clumsy and rude. Dreadful!

We stopped on the way to Bristol Airport as the food there was poor. What a good choice, lovely place, friendly staff and a great breakfast. Well done.

Wonderful little find. You would never have guessed from the outside how lovely it is inside. The man who greeted us upon entering was so welcoming the food was lovely and the bacon sarni was to die for x check this place out you won't be dissapointed x

Disappointing. No baby changing facilities, no children’s menu, staff were friendly but took forever to serve us and it wasn’t even busy. Paid over £15 for a roast dinner and although the veg was nice, it certainly was not your money’s worth. Food took ages to be served and I am quite certain the roast potatoes were microwaved. Horrified at the pizza that was ordered, seriously poor quality and just under £10. The pudding was lovely but all in all I will never be going back, a table of 6 people and all of us were unhappy with the whole experience.

The food is beautiful. Tempura fried fish, chips and crushed minted peas with homemade tarter sauce on fridays is very nice. Also the sunday roasts are worth trying. I had the trio roast and while it might seem expensive after i had eaten it i thought it was well worth it. All sauces are homemade and the horseradish was amazing. The pork belly melted in your mouth and the flavours of the beef and lamb were excellent. Also the deserts were good. We had a party of 8 and not a single hint of a problem.

It has all been said before. Super venue! Super food! Super staff! Super ambience! A gem that will not disappoint. A 5 star experience in every way.
