Best seafood we ever had, lovely place and people. I can definitely say Hartgills made our trip to Portsmouth more meaningful and memorable. Definitely a hidden gem!

This seafood shop is absolutely unparalleled! I highly recommend their seafood platter(seafood selection) and whelk meat, which are definitely the highlights here. The seafood platter is fresh and plentiful, and the whelk meat is tender and juicy. The owner is very friendly and the décor of the shop is also beautiful, simple yet cosy. This place is a perfect choice If you come to Portsmouth. Highly recommended! Five stars!

Great seafood! I can only recommend. A whole pot of wilts (bulot, whelks) for only 5 pounds (already released), really fresh, just good.

Fantastic seafood with a bit more on offer than your usual seafood stall and a genuinely lovely man who runs it.

I love coming over here just for some seafood, both staff members that I have seen have been brilliant, great customer service, they let you have little testers and know what they are taking about....

Not opened on 10 May (Fri)， 11 May (Sat) and 12 May (Sun) I think the shop permanently closed. I think the opening time needs to update on Google. I am so disappointed ☹️

Hi, I hope the owner reads this. I ordered jellied eels and I love it so much! The whelks are perfect, the cockles are good too, but they're a bit sandy haha. I wanted to tell him in person but the shop closed shortly after I enjoyed the seafood I bought. Anyways, 10/10 reasonable price, fresh food, and the owner is sooo nice!

Ideal place for your seafood needs on the seas edge at the Hard. Very friendly man serving good portion sizes.

I’m sorry to say my experience wasn’t good. I had a small portion of whelks and they were absolutely horrible. No seafood was on display. That should’ve been my first warning but you know what it’s like you’re there and you really fancy something and made the trip especially. I doubt anything else would be much better.

Great little place to buy some tasty seafood and eat it on the quay. Lovely service and chat. Try the bread, it’s delicious.

Great fun place for a wonderful selection of traditional British seafood (cockles and whelks) as well as baby Octopus in a delicious sweet vinegar sauce (maybe not for the faint-hearted)! Memories of whelks on a cocktail stick on childhood beach holidays. Really friendly & generous service in a traditional cockle stall - benches just beside with views over the harbour & the sea in your hair. Huge selection of teas, coffee or hot Bovril to warm you against the sea breeze too.

Terrible seafood, not fresh and tasteless. Very expensive for what they offer.

Unfriendly server. Big prawns and lots of langoustine tails but all tasteless. I suspect from a jar from the accompanying water. Still enjoyable to sit on the quay and watch the world go by.

Exceptionally good service, what a kind man, very friendly, gave us a little bit extra seafood, some sweets, recommended sauces to go with food and, oh, “fill them up right to the top!” :D Very good, I recommend getting the seafood mix.

Was looking for some fresh seafood on my visit to Portsmouth, found this place and wasn’t disappointed. Lovely seafood, great portion, great service from the very friendly owner, and I enjoyed the seaside decorations and theming around the shopfront. Highly reccomended.

Absolutely fantastic. Was here this afternoon, large seafood selection and small octopus, both very incredibly large portions and tasted incredible. The owner was amazing, extremely friendly and made us and our children feel most welcome and threw in a few cruly wurlys which our children loved

I passed by this place on a rainy afternoon. Lovely owner very friendly, good selection of seafood, i ordered king prawn octopus, portion is large for its price~ however king prawn is really small in size, maybe its just how it is locally, I also didn't expect food was pre made and it to be served cold, I brought the remaining and mix them with my pasta.

My son and I visit Hartgills every time we cross the ferry, always friendly and the crayfish is the best!

Discovered this gem of a find as we walked back to the Gosport Ferry terminal. Absolutely awesome! Definitely a keeper for future visits

Great choice of seafood, great value, really friendly and kind owner. Personally recommend the baby octopus with garlic vinegar, seafood mix was great too! Will definitely visit again when in the area!

Pretty good seafood for a reasonable price. I would recommend the seafood mix pot. It was mostly prawns and crayfish which weren't any better than those from a supermarket. The woman was friendly and I did enjoy it. Not sure how fresh their stuff is though, tasted like it was from a supermarket.

I'm hoping this is the seafood booth on The Hard, next to the Historic Dockyard. If you miss the days when you could buy fresh shellfish and eat them walking along the promanade orthe beach this is what you have been looking for. With choices including crayfish tails, crab sticks, welks, cockles and baby octopus and a choice of vinegars and sauces to have with them, we always visit when we are in Portsmouth. They also sell teas and coffees, crisps and probably more but we always go for the seafood.
