Harry Haw's in Argyll & Bute

Disappointed. Friday night on a bank holiday weekend, arrived at 8pm and asked for a table for 2. Restaurant still had more than 50% of customers but we were told kitchen was closed. Clearly couldn't be bothered. I'd never return based on that lack of customer care.

We ordered food for delivery today and asked for no olives on the nachos but they did come with olives on and when we called to complain they accused us of lying and were very rude.

Due to my car breaking down we could not go out for a birthday meal. We called to request a delivery but it was past the usual delivery deadline. Hearing the circumstances they did arrange for a delivery to us. The service both on the phone and from the delivery driver were exceptional and the fish and chips were of best restaurant quality and still hot and fresh despite the distance to the very south of the island. I would have been delighted to have this quality of fish and chips in a top restaurant. Top marks for quality, attitude and service, thank you!

We found this fab wee restaurant at the start of the week for dinner,good menu and food was delicious. Hannah and the staff couldn’t have been any nicer and welcoming. We called in again the next day for a lunch before heading home and again loved it. See you again in April.

We telephoned in advance as we knew this was a busy place. We also needed to check that our coeliac daughter could be accommodated We were not disappointed . The four of us had excellent meals. She had GF fish and chips which was delicious. The waitress was run off her feet but very attentive and helpful. A very pleasant dining out experience. Full marks to you.

My husband and I stayed in Rothesay on a week night in late September, clearly after the tourist season was over. It never occurred to us that we would need a reservation to eat dinner anywhere. We came here and were told we needed a reservation even though there were clearly several empty tables. I wish I could compliment their food but I cannot. Perhaps we were in the wrong but we were still disappointed.

Visited today with a friend wrongly wanted a coffee We were made to feel very welcome had a lovely flat white it was so good we then tried a americano both were delicious Looking forward to going for lunch

We ate here on a Saturday night and ordered the fish tacos and a crispy chicken burger. The burger was really good as were the fries. Daily specials were also available. Note it doesn’t stay open late (closes at 8:30pm) therefore best to book.

As a family, we visited Harry Haw’s on 22nd October 2022. The restaurant was recommended and it didn’t disappoint. All 5 dishes (3 adult, 2 children) were of excellent quality and the service was warm and friendly. The restaurant has a lovely decor and we thoroughly enjoyed our visit

Very friendly staff, welcoming and accommodating. Food excellent, fresh and beautifully presented. Seafood 🦞 platter outstanding. Burger 🍔 very good.

A lovely place well situated in the centre with views of the castle. Despite being fully booked the staff went out of their way to fit us at a bar table. Really fun and friendly atmosphere. Food was well priced and tasty, great selection on the menu also. Can’t fault it.

Just had a delivery to our B&B. Delivered in under 40 minutes, piping hot and delicious. Eaten in before but first delivery - won't be the last!

Harry Haws appears to be a restaurant serving average cafe, takeaway food at restaurant prices. We visited as a couple and were seated straight away. The restaurant does not offer any starters. We ordered a main meal of chilli nachos to share, they were horrible. The bowl was swimming in tomato ketchup! the tortilla chips were fine, the chilli mince was fine and was topped with some picked chilli slices from a jar, there was no cheese but there was a small separate plastic tub of sour cream. Unfortunately the overwhelming taste was of the tomato ketchup that they appeared to have lined the entire bottom and sides of the dish with. Most of the menu appears to be frozen food, deep fried, pasta or a homemade burger or pizza. We ordered haddock and chips and a Mac and cheese for our mains. The fish and chips were quite nice but the tartar sauce again came in a separate plastic tubs and didn't taste too good. The Mac and cheese came in a small bowl, it was quite creamy but had very little if any taste of cheese, it was accompanied by two obviously frozen slices of garlic bread. We asked for a couple of gin and tonics before our meal, only to be told they only sell their spirits in cans ??? We opted for some wine but again this wasn't available by the glass, they only sell it by the individual mini bottles or by full 750ml bottles. They have a choice of three whites, two reds or one rosé we opted for a full bottle of white to share but wished we hadn't, it was clearly the cheapest rubbish the wholesalers had on offer and was also served at room temperature meaning we had to ask for ice 'to add to our already poor quality wine'. We decided not to order any of the three prepackaged deserts or ice-cream. One member of staff "Charlie?" was very pleasant and attentive. The other was more like a bull in a China shop and spent most of the night singing along badly to the background music. Harry Haws, what have you done? you always used to have an excellent ala-cart restaurant serving good quality meals but you now appear to have a takeaway with a sit-in section. The restaurant was spotlessly clean but the food, drink and experience was very poor. I don't think we'll be back anytime soon.

This lovely place is tucked up a side street but right beside the Castle (great view). It has a lovely relaxed ambience, superb, friendly, helpful staff and plenty of food choices. In fact we enjoyed it so much we ate there 2 nights in a row! Superb fish and chips and also loved the Veggie Curry. Nothing was too much trouble for the Waitresses and we didn't feel rushed. Special thanks to Michelle and Charline - they are great assets to the business. Can't wait to visit again in the near future. P.S. Advisable to book in advance - this place is popular and fills up!

Great choice and all of us enjoyed what we had. We are a wee bit fussy (!) and have various dietary requirements and all were met. Plus fabulous sticky toffee pudding . Server was brilliant - we couldn’t believe it when she told us she was 16. I’d hire her in a heartbeat. What an asset! Great atmosphere too.

This is quite a small, but atmospheric, restaurant. The waitress was really friendly and helpful. We shared a seafood pizza between the two of us. It was plenty large enough and one of the best, if not the best, we have ever had.

Weekend visit to Rothesay with the family, and as there doesn't seem to be anywhere dog friendly, we decided to order a carry out instead and decided to try Harry Haw's.It took about an hour for the food to arrive, though with it being a Saturday night that's not too bad.The food tasted great and the portions were very generous, so more than made up for the terrible lunch we had earlier (see previous review).Would recommend to other visitors, and suggest downloading their app to make it easier to place the order.

Ate here when staying in Rothesay last month. It was a busy Thursday night and we didn't have a booking, but they managed to fit us in sitting up at the window. The food was excellent and easier one of the best fish and chips I had for years. Great service, atmosphere and certainly recommend when in Rothesay.

Visited with my parents in Aug 2021, have to say after trying a lot of food on the island this place is the go to. Friendly staff despite the long working days, I work in a restaurant as well so understand it can be hard to stay sharp all day. Had a great time here, and would recommend this restaurant to people of all ages, theres something for everyone! Make sure to book in advance, Harry Haws is busy, and rightfully so.

Great place for lunch whilst on island, variety of food choices for all. Good value for money. Good service, and friendly staff.

Arrived on the 15th August was told of this lovely eatery wasn't disappointed absolutely beautiful southern fried chicken, will definitely be back whilst staying again in the lovely Boat House Suites.

My partner and I came here a couple weeks ago - we're both vegan and the staff were really friendly and helpful. We got a pizza and you can customise the toppings exactly to your liking, and they have lots of interesting ones too like pear and butternut squash! Vegan cheese is usually an afterthought sprinkled on to a pizza like a seasoning but this was really melty and substantial - it was a great meal.

My wife and I had a meal here last night, very busy place but great atmosphere , great music, the three girls that were serving couldn't have been any nicer or more attentive my wife is celiac , the head waitress was very helpful helping us with food that my wife could eat i had a chicken burger and the chef made my wife a lovely fish with vegetables (not on menu) we would like to thank that girl on how she went over and beyond to make sure we had a great meal and experience in this facility and to the chef for accomodating my wife's dietry needs, we will most definately be back next year when were back on the island 5stars.

Me and my partner had table booked for 5pm today. The lady who greeted us was lovely, however can't say the same about young waitress. I informed her we were both pescaterian and that I am allergic to peppers, to which she said nothing- I had to ask about every non-meat option on the menu to see if they contain peppers. Asked about veggie burger containing peppers to which she said "I'd imagine so" not even bothering to check. Asked about veggie tacos, she went to check to in fact be told they do contain peppers (if food is made fresh, she could have asked chef to cook food without peppers). Eventually I decided to settle for fish tacos (had to actually approach the bar, as she didn't bother to come back and ask for my order). She told me there was no peppers in those fish tacos. We've waited 40mins for our order (there were only 2 other tables taken, 8 people in restaurant, including us) which was a bit long, but fine if worth the wait. When the waitress brought our food, she said "oh I think they've put peppers in your tacos" and took it back. By the time I got the tacos (consisting only of fish, lettuce and tacos shells) my partner has finished his food. The whole point of going for a meal together is, surprisingly, to eat together. The cherry on top was the fact, that on the bill I was charged for said tacos TWICE! Fortunately the more capable waitress, who brought the bill has corrected it for us. Food was good, hence 2 stars. Service the worse we had in years. For comparison we've visited The kettledrum and they were more than happy to accommodate our dietary needs, staff was lovely, helpful and served us with smile.

My wife and decided to have a well deserved fish supper having walked the West Island Way southern loop. Looked up best fish bar in Bute and were not disappointed. Friendly staff but even better freshly cooked fish and scampi. Excellent takeaway presentation with pot of tartar sauce and pot of mushy peas. Highly recommend

After pre-booking over a week early for 8 people we arrived to a table Set up for 6 to be told well that’s what we have in book I explained I actual phoned for booking and said 4 kids 4 adults we were told well that’s only table we have so squash in or go else where !!!! This was precooked for my daughters 12 birthday and I was disgusted at the girls attitude !! The girl was the most rude aggressive natured girl I have came into contact with in this type of industry no wonder places like this are struggling with her attitude I’m surprised it’s lasted this long!!! Thankfully was managed to go else where with lovely staff but I can honestly say I would tell anyone looking for anywhere to go AVOID this place!!!

Can't believe a couple of reviews moaning about food being served in boxes. I can only praise this restaurant for the covid measures to not only keep the staff safe but the customers too! Be happy that we are now allowed to visit this wonderful island.Ate here both nights in Bute, one was a take away that we took across the road to the tables set out by the council (we were fortunate with the weather). The fish goujons were huge! Tasty too, and so was the haddock (pinched some of my partners!) And it was definitely fresh. Had the flalfel burger the other night and that was tasty too, not dry like some places.The restaurant is very small downstairs. Not sure if there's space elsewhere but that didn't matter, we still had a good meal. Will definitely eat here next time in Bute.

Stopped in for late late lunch to takeaway and got a lovely pizza deal. Pizzas were tasty and chips galore. Friendly staff. Would definitely go back if visiting island again.

We used this takeaway twice when staying in Rothesay. Friendly staff and good Covid hygene. I'd recommend the Fish and Chips and the pizzas. My GF had lasagne which was also declious if a tad salty. The takeaway is popular and busy so best to phone ahead and then pick up to save hanging about, or use an app.

Tried to get a table here without a reservation but place was full. Was invited to leave number and staff called to let me know as soon as a table was free. The pizza and southern fried chicken were a whole other level. Staff super friendly and efficient. Im glad this place is busy because it deserves to be. Brilliant on every level.

Friendly but s-l-o-w service (once we finally saw the menu, waited half an hour + for meal)...and horrible fish...suspect it was Brakes or similar rather than fresh, and possibly refried. Surprisingly, the chips were ok.

Since lockdown restrictions were eased and we have been allowed to travel further from home, we have visited Harry Haws 4 times over the last month or so during our visits to the beautiful Isle of Bute. My wife has an intolerance to wheat, egg and dairy which can prove challenging when planning a meal out. Not so at Harry Haws. The chef and staff are well switched on and have provided “safe food” for my wife on every occasion. This is very reassuring to us and hopefully will be to other customers.

Ordered 6 different meals via the app - so easy to use and great to hand around for everyone to choose their own dish. Chose time of pick up and that was it!Amazing food, generous portions, friendly staff when collecting and highly recommended. Made for a great, and very relaxing, end to a busy day on Bute. Thanks!

We'd eaten here a few times pre-pandemic and really enjoyed the food but this time it has just reduced to a sit-down to eat largely takeaway food - just main courses - fish & chips comes in a box; we got tumblers to drink the (one choice) wine; they had lost our reservation ( but managed to make space) - the staff were friendly and food passable - just not what we expected.

Lovely little restaurant with excellent food. Had the 6oz burger (no bun for me!) with mushrooms and jalapeno topping along with the dirty fries. The fries on their own would have been enough! Topped with chunks of fried chicken, crispy bacon bits, mayo and cheese. All delicious. Proper covid procedures were in place and the staff are all friendly and helpful. Definitley with a visit!

This establishment was recommend to us. We were expecting a conventional restaurant but found that Harry Haws was far from conventional. All constituent parts of our meal was served either in cardboard containers or in plastic cartons. I suppose the idea is to avoid having to employ or buy a dishwasherThere was a good choice on the menu and portions were just right.The waitress who took our order also served us our meals. She was friendly and welcoming Harry Haws is a relatively small place with about twenty covers sitting in cubicles on bench seating While we were there we also discovered that they do a Takeaway service which perhaps explains the disposable cardboard and plastic.We enjoyed our meal and will go there again.

Our table for four plus my 4yr old granddaughter was booked for 6pm. On our arrival we were told they needed our table back at 7.30. Admittedly we were 10mins late, however I think this is something we should have been informed of at time of booking. We quickly ordered our meals and drinks.Our meals arrived at 6.55!!!!!At 7.25 while my granddaughter and myself were still eating and others were finishing their drinks the waitress appears with our bill saying we would have to leave at 730.We asked for some extra time to finish off and were told no!!!! How they expected us to eat our dinners in 30mins baffles me. It was anything BUT a relaxed meal out. Never had such an experience in any other restaurants!!!! To be fair the food was lovely, however I think they seriously need to brush up on their customer service skills. Not a way to treat visitors to the island

We really loved this restaurant and is the nicest place for food on the island, we ate there twice, great pizza and fish and chips. The service was excellent, Michelle our server was lovely. Would highly recommend. Very central.

We arrived here on a cold, wet afternoon in May after reading thd great reviews. Not dissapointed. I can't believe I've lived to my ripe old age and not experienced dirty chips with crispy chicken. Fab-u-lous!! Great service, amazing value, spotlessly clean and friendly staff. My husband really enjoyed his fish goujons and chips but he so wants to come back and try the dirty chips.

Managed to get a table tonight at short notice as we had not organised anywhere for dinner. The two girls who were in the restaurant were lovely....they squeezed us in at 8 pm but took a in TV phone number and promised to call if a table was freed up earlier. They were true to their word and called us just before 7 to say a table was available. We rushed round from the Golfers before we got too drunk and had a fish burger from the Specials and a beef burger with bacon and cheese. Both came with tons of delicious chips. We would have scoffed the lot both were defeated by the chips. We washed the feast down with bottles of Peroni. Great food, great service, great prices - we'll be back ! Forgot to mention the beautiful decor and the location overlooking the castle

My sis & I popped in a little early for lunch but Michelle was only too happy to serve us fantastic fish. Huge thanks also to the lovely kitchen staff. Harry Haw’s is quirky with lovely reclaimed decor. It’s unusual to find something different on a menu these days but theirs was downright ‘dirty’ in a very good way. Again huge big up for Michelle. You are the epitome of a natural when it comes to front of house.

Popped in a couple of times while on a long weekend in Bute. Loads of choice from healthy soup and sandwiches to more indulgent snacks. Lovely and clean with friendly staff and cheerful decor

On a cold day a stop off at Harry's is a must . The warm rich homemade soups are always a real treat. If they ever publish a cookbook I'll be first in the Q. Such a friendly place the whole family feel right at home. Can't wait till lockdown is over and we can get back for our next visit. No matter how cold and windy it is on the seafront there will be a warm welcome waiting.

Had a fantastic takeaway lunch from Harry Haws today, they are doing a special deal at the moment during the week, soup and any sandwich or wrap for a FIVER!Soup which was a generous cup was amazing, and sandwich full to the brim, fresh and lovely, staff where very helpful and friendly.My daughter and her friends where also in, late afternoon for a pizza and dirty fries which they said was amazing!Give it a try!

Very well serviced, very good portions at a very reasonable cost .......... As I’m not the skinniest person I found the seating very much on the tight side .......So much that if I laughed or coughed everything on the table was in danger with the shakes............

Popped in for lunch the waitress was fantastic you could tell she was smiling even behind the mask. We had coffees hot chocolate fab tomato soup great messy chips , a super tasty chicken burger amongst other food. Finished off with a pumpkin cheeses cake which was lovely. The atmosphere was relaxing and the toilets spotless. The decor is stylish and smart.

Best fried chicken this side of the Clyde. This restaurant has left the best impressions! Hospitable hosts, fantastic beer selection, I’d recommend to everyone!

The special on the day of our visit was chicken jalfrezi and it was very tasty. The staff were friendly and the atmosphere good. Really liked the decor, simple but well done and the old photographs were very interesting.

Parents had the Fish and Chips, I had the fish burger, basically a smaller fillet in a brioche bun. Best fish we've had for a long time and better than most chippies. Lovely thick, flaking fish in a crispy and non greasy batter. Very good value for money, very good service and covid proofed in a way that doesn't feel obtrusive or stressful. As they have had to adapt and are doing a lot of takeways they have decided to serve in t/a containers for eating in as well which didnt 1detract from what is essentially high quality fast food. Pizza on the next table looked great too!

We spent an afternoon in Rothesay and had lunch at Harry Haw’s. It did not disappoint. Excellent safety measures in place with a one way system, hand sanitiser etc... the menu was excellent and it took a while for me to choose the dirty fries had caught my eye at the outset and that’s what a went for. When they arrived they were so fresh, hot and absolutely delicious! I devoured them and grudging shared a few bits with my husband Would recommend to anyone visiting Rothesay

I liked everything about this place!Well.... almost..... Being a lady with more curves than straight lines I found the table to be very close when I attempted to slide into our booth.... Our waitress told me that adjustments are planned. The decor is fresh and modern while managing to keep a feeling of somewhere that's been passed down for generations and everywhere is absolutely spotless. I chose to order the fish n chips (breaded) with mushy peas and tartare sauce. The fish was absolutely gorgeous.... flakey fresh... and the coating was on just the right side of crispy. The chips were just as I like them.... chunky and fluffy. And the tartare sauce was the best I've ever tasted! Home made, too! (I asked.)My other half plumped for dirty chips. To be honest, neither of us was quite sure what to expect but when they arrived we knew they had been a good choice before they'd even been tasted! I think I'll be ordering them next time!Both portions were such that we thought we'd be taking a doggy bag away with us but it was all so good we couldn't not eat it all! I absolutely recommend this restaurant and am already looking forward to our next visit.

Myself and my boyfriend were over in Rothesay for the day from Glasgow and decided to book a table here for 5.30pm for dinner. As a result we based our entire day around this booking making sure we did everything before this so we would have time to get food at 5.30pm then make the ferry home at 7pm. We had built up a hunger by 5.30pm and were really looking forward to our meal so we left the pub early to ensure we got there in plenty of time. However when we turned up for our booking the waitress told us that there were people at our table so we would have to wait. I thought she meant there was just people finishing up so I was happy to wait, however she informed us that in fact someone had walked straight in and sat down on our table and ordered food so our table was no longer available. Personally I was really shocked by this poor level of organisation and service because we had specifically booked that table for 5.30pm and they had just given it away to someone else. There should have been more communication / organisation amongst the staff so that there was a reserved sign on the table or these random people’s order simply should not have been taken by the staff. We were then left without dinner reservations at half 5 with the ferry coming soon and we’re extremely hungry. We then had to walk around the island trying to find somewhere to eat extremely last minute on a Saturday night. This was extremely frustrating because thought we had secured somewhere to eat but the staff at Harry Haws had literally given our table away and could have been more apologetic about it. I highly doubt if we return to Rothesay we will attemptto eat at Harry Haws because we cannot guarantee that a table will be held for us.

I phoned in for a carry out at 7.55pm. My order was 2 seafood pizzas and 1 with jalapenos on top. I was told to collect at 8.30pm. Arrived and paid for my food. I waited until 8.55pm to collect food. Drove home and when I opened the boxes, both pizzas had jalapenos on them. I can't tolerate jalapenos, so I picked them off. However, the residue of the jalapenos was still in my pizza. I couldn't eat it, so a waste of money. Also my mouth had swollen up later on with the effects.This could have been dangerous for some people with an allergy. Simply, my order was not typed in correctly. Most probably I will not return.

popped in for a late lunch , great fish and chips in a very nice setting and a nice cold cider to wash it down good choice on the menu and selection of drinks

Went for Sunday evening meal after reading glowing reviews from repeat diners, so our expectations were high. Unfortunately although food was okay, getting in take away boxes and plastic glasses was a considerable disappointment. Also after a short wait the order arrived without my wife’s halloumi wrap, after a further short wait my wife had to ask at the bar for her meal. She came back with her wrap in a clear plastic box. My overall impression was that it could have been so much better with plates and glasses, and so much better for the environment.Food 1 : Service 0

We ate dinner here twice during our visit to Bute. The fish and chips were excellent, the dirty fries very filling and the chicken was freshly prepared and succulent. The restaurant seemed to be freshly decorated, and the reclaimed doors made great covid screens. Tables and booths were thoroughly cleaned after each use.

What a Gem of a Restaurant this is we ate at this cracking restaurant twice whilst on Bute one evening and one lunchtime.Both occasions the food was both tasty and good size helpings.The fish burger and the lasagne were delicious.Good choice of Brewdog beers and a good selection of wines.We Had the Chilli pot and Fish Goujons and a side order of Dirty chips for lunch both were plentiful in portion size and taste.The value for money is excellent.Thoroughly recommend a visit if in Bute at any time

Just finished my take-away meal I got from Harry Haws and it was fantastic, I had the fish Goujons which come in Panko Breadcrumbs and are to die for, the chips were also spot on. I picked up two lovely looking salads from the takeaway section I spotted and they are sitting in the fridge ready to be tried/demolished later. The staff are always smiling and having also sat in a few times pre covid I have always really enjoyed my meals in Harry Haws. The new Decor is very smart too and I will obviously be back.

Where to start? I put a a takeaway order in for 2 meals. Realised as I drove off that I had 5 meals in the car. Took them back as I felt it was the right as I felt it was the right thing to do. Some other couple who had been given my order by mistake brought it back at the same time as me. No replacement food given, they simply made us swap bags and by the time I made it home the food was stone cold as the other customer had it in their possession for about 25 mins. Couple this with the fact that we should be adhering to Strict COVID guidelines I feel that this irresponsible and unacceptable. Won’t be back.
