Harpers Fish & Chips Wetwang in East Riding of Yorkshire

We stayed in Wetwang for a short break away and decided to try the local chippy. The best fish and chips I have tasted in years. Deep blue fry their chips in beef dripping, they are super tasty and not at all greasy. Fish cooked to order, good batter, very nice indeed. Highly recommended.

Appalling. I was only one in shop asked for spam fritter battered sausage chips and scraps.....lets start with,no scraps given even though there where plenty....ok so I'll let that go. Food was barely warm and I mean barely . I binned the chips as they where more little end hard bits then actual chips...sausage OK fritter OK The only things that enjoyed this meal was the wildlife in the lay-by up the road. Never again. Down hill since new owners took over. Portions smaller prices higher

First ever visit taken by a group of people who have been here a few times in the past year and I have to say I wasn’t disappointed I opted for the regular haddock and chips good size portion the batter was crispy and golden the haddock was firm white flesh and very tasty chips cooked to perfection the potatoes were sweet tasting highly recommend

Waited 30 minutes for fish & chips. Chaos reigned supreme!! Bickering staff, no one in charge. So inefficient. Won't be going back!!

The area this is based in is beautiful and the food is very high quality and tastes fantastic. Would highly recommend this chippy.

Quality of chips was very poor. I could not eat the chips. I paid extra for a large fish which looked the same size as the previous customers small fish. No taste to the vinegar, it seemed to be diluted. I would not recommend this fish shop.

The fish on this occasion was lovely, and the chips were well cooked and plentiful. It's probably a little too expensive, but I'm happy to support a business in a small village and it is convenient when travelling up to the Moors etc.

Couldn't eat about 10 chips due to black bits. Surely the quality of the chips could have been checked.

Used to visit quite regularly but the fish and chips are hit and miss now, a small fish and chips cost £8.79 and last time it was burnt and the fish was chewy and the chips hard and the fish was that small. This will be the last time I visit as no longer consistent and not value for money.

as we live in the village and had visitors at short notice as a quick meal we order fish and chips for four people it was the biggest waste of money the fish was awful strong flavor the chips pale and greasy. we have had fish and chips from this fish shop over the years as far back as when THOMSONS AND HARPERS both ran it and had a well deserved reputation for their fish and chips

All I can say is the Cod was cooked to perfection Granddaughter loved the Battered Cookie Dough bites

Used to be known as Harpers many years ago when the Black Swan pub was open. The pub now turned into a house and the chippy changed hands and name. It was OK we couldn't complain costs slightly more than other chippies and was very fresh nice & hot. The cod portion was large and tasty but the Haddock was dry .mushy peas were very good but the gravy was cheap mayflower gravy (you know £5 per gallon crap) On the whole it was "alright" and if in the area and hungry a good place to fuel up. Quite a busy chippy but just a little something missing but we are spoilt in Hawes. On the plus side chips are a good 4 out of 5 and there were a lot of them for all the large hungries out there a major bonus.

This Fish & Chip shop is the worst we have tasted. It used to be fantastic when it was Harpers. We called in for lunch when passing, but wish we hadn't. It was hard tasteless fish, hard greasy chips, it tasted like it had been in warming cabinet, as it only took minutes to be ready! This cost us almost £18 for 2 x small Haddock & Chips. Takeaways are not cheap & are a treat these days, so this shop should get their act together, as customers will not return.

We have been going to this fish shop for years even when it was a different name. However it has slowly declined . We visit every month or so.The last few times the food has been worse. Today will be the last time we visit . The chips were hard , the fish was like rubber. Such a shame. Advice try somewhere else

I don't often write reviews, especially bad ones, but this is an exception. We visited the Deep Blue fish shop in Wetwang yesterday. We ordered a large haddock and a large cod, both with chips to take away. To be honest, you cannot classify this size of fish as large. In these difficult times, you are not going to be able to get away with this forever. The quality of the takeaway was also debatable, it was overcooked, tasteless & very dry. I suggest that you read your website advertisement very thoroughly, before responding. Considering the businesses that trade in your field, you need to get things sorted out, preferably whilst you still have a business. I'm sorry that this review is rather blunt, but I feel that I need to get this point across to you sooner, rather than later.

This fish and chip shop really gave me a shock. Loved it! Small portions were quite big though, but still good. The only downside is it may sometimes take a while to get your order, rest is amazing! There’s a field with benches nearby as well for seating, lovely spot in Wetwang.

Called Sunday Tea time for fish and chips, the choice is large or small, what is wrong with just a regular size? We opted for small at £6.99 for fish and £2.39 for chips The fish was tiny, thin, and dry, The chips were greasy and limp. Give it a miss. Rubbish is not worth the money. .

The wetwang store excellent service food was perfect all hot and the whole family really enjoyed it all x

Called today as normally it’s the nicest chippy anywhere but not now. Got fish & chips at lunchtime but chips were dry n scrappy an fish very over cooked, was like they’d been warmed up from the day before. Asked if I wanted them open an didn’t realise they’d charged me extra for a box , not sure what’s happened to this chippy but I wouldn’t recommend it now

Unfortunately it was absolutely awful… Terrible management and inconsistent food quality every time we visit. Tried to diplomatically express my feelings regarding my experience but it simply was not welcome!

Very pleasant and helpful staff. Food cooked to order so always hot and fresh. Easy to use web site for ordering. Had the puppy with me today so food was brought out to me. One of the best fish and chip shops I have been to.

We were staying in sledmere and wanted a quick meal after a long drive up from surrey.The takeaway fish n chips was superb , really enjoyable. Worth a visit, many thanks .

We were close by at a dog walking field (Driffield dog field) and fancied fish and chips for lunch, I googled the nearest chippies to me and up popped Deep Blue. The pictures looked lovely (don't they always lol) so it was 5 miles away...

GF available all day every day (why is this not possible everywhere?) and much appreciated. We were visiting the area, delighted to find Deep Blue. Understandably very popular. I watched the whole gf process from hand washing to sticker and couldn't have been more impressed....

We had a great fish and chips that were straight from the oven, boiling. The curry we got was also really hot. This was a great experience and will definitely come again when we visit brid next time!

After spending a weekend on the east coast it was an utter delight to come across this gluten free fish and chip shop. Decent gluten free food is hard to find. My only one negative point was that it was not brown or crispy enough...

Great fish and chips from here. Love that I can order on line and pick up at my given time. Fish was lovely and white, good clean flavour and the batter light and crispy. Chips are nice and crispy too! Gravy, mushy peas and curry sauce all hit the spot for us!

As the drizzle started at the Wetwang Scarecrow Festival, my Wife and I thought a hot meal needed until it passed over. Read some recent reviews the night before and was unsure what to expect but need not have been. Shop operate an order and pay system and then you wait to be called up to collect. 6 people in front but less then 10 minutes later we were back at the car eating. We ordered small haddock, chips and peas - pieces of the fish were in three-quarter inch chunks and in a lovely batter;chips were spot on and small standard sized carton of delicious peas. Plenty on the fish for a mid day meal and lots of chips. Being brought up in Hull and plentiful Fish shops I’d like to think we know a good un and this was very good. Only one thought, we waited at the back of what we thought was the queue, only to be told by someone that they were waiting and had already been seen to - just a bit of signage as 3 of the next 5 all did the same. EXCELLENT and look forward to next visit thanks!

We were staying with a friend for a few days and we decided to have a ride out to wetwang as we have heard good reviews about deep blue and told that they did good fish and chips and also do gluten free which some places nearer the coast don't do I am gluten free and was recommended to go there as they were go so decide to try them we were greeted by a nice lady at the counter and asked what we would like to order she took the order and payment and we were then asked to wait outside and we would be called forward when our order was ready we collected our order and went back to the car to tuck in to them my gluten free one was in a different coloured box with a gluten free label on which is good they were really good the fish was nice and fresh and the batter crispy the chips were a little well done and soggy maybe they need to cook in smaller quantities and then they don't sit in the hot cupboard too long apart from that they were very good and hope to call again soon

Will never use this Fish and chip shop again. On both occasions when I've been, there has been one male server who has spoken rudely and aggressively to other customers. It was only about queueing but there was no need to be so openly aggressive.

Good Friday treat. Usually we go to one of the town's fisheries, but we thought that we would try here for a change. Clever and time saving ordering on line, with a specific collection time given, makes queuing minimal, given our need to still maintain 2m distances. All packed up nicely, both fish and chips were a generous portion, with only the batter a little soft, as we drove 10 minutes home before eating. Will try again and eat while there instead!

Found a intact full Woodlouse in my mushy peas. When I went back to tell them they asked ‘if we wanted another or gravy instead’ they did not take any responsibility or did not apologise. The man cooking the food was very rude! They reluctantly ended up refunding us £1 !!! despite having to throw our food away because of how sick we felt.

I visited with my family and while in the middle of eating my peas I felt something hard in my mouth.. I spat it out and it was a woodlouse in the middle of my peas! We took these back and they were so rude and didn’t even apologise. They offered us gravy instead when we wanted a refund. They said they could only refund £1 for the peas despite throwing our whole meal away! Avoid at all costs.. if their are bugs in the peas I wonder what else is in the kitchen

Had Fish and chips with a couple of friends here during lockdown , we drove from york in seperate cars , our friends had never been before, I told them we used to come regulary a year or two back and they were always good , But not any more, the fish was very dry and tasteless the chips were greasy and cold . I apologised to our friends and doubt very much if we will ever come back.

Lucky Boy!....yes we really did....we were looking forward (having returned from scotland) to calling into the Wetherby Whaler....however, parking was horrendous, the BMW set were tooting their horns at anything that moved, so we hastily escaped that awful town.....Freshly cooked fish and chips, from fryer to "box" in our case....treated ourselves to a large version....which is only slightly higher (price wise) than in nearby driffield....This was a GOOD Stop! wonderful....given Covid 19, we happened to be 1st in the queue so had to wait only a short time and it was well worth it....seating nearby overlooking the pond and ducks do like to sample small portions of whatever you choose to eat as theres more than just fish n chips on the menu...a lovely way to finish a holiday...thanks team!

We used to come here a few years back, but this visit was very disappointing. I remembered GREAT Fish and Chips, and HUGE portions, but now it is very average (small and overpriced in my opinion). I gather it has changed hands...what a shame..

Disgrace had to wait 40 minutes this evening from joining a moderate sized queue until we finally received our food, chips were greasy, fish were ok but small for price. Asked for forks didn’t get any, asked for it to be served in a box didn’t get one. Management needs to go and have a look at papas in Scarborough haddock like a whale cooked perfect and good chips all for a quid cheaper. Won’t be off again!!!!

Superb homemade fish cakes. Spot on. Worth waiting for... they have a great texture and are very thick. Thanks for a new find. Will be back.

Middle of the day visit and very glad I did, walking onwards to Malton that day.Pleasant little chippy, lots on offer and a good friendly service. For the surrounding area, there is not much about and this is way above anything locally.Only thing I struggled with was the deep accent for open, which being from down south came across as urpen.Sausage and chips were great. Bonus was red sauce on self-service, which down south is an extra !

I hadn't been for a couple of years and being busy decided to call in but wished I hadn't. I ordered the cod and chips . The chips were lovely but the cod was overdone, tasteless and very dry. A total waste of money. I won't be going back again.

Have been here many times before especially when named Harper’s. The fish and chips were legend. Was looking forward to a Sunday treat as we passed that way. Not to be, very long wait, one person serving who appeared untrained, even though a supervisor appeared from the back room just before we left. Quality and quantity of food was poor and the prices charged did not reflect this, top dollar bottom drawer food. Appeared to be confusion and arguments between server and fryer. Ended up getting the wrong order paid for a large fish but appeared to get child portion, think it was from the party who ordered before us. Overall poor service, poor quality, poor value for money. Sorry won’t be going back better places to spend my cash.

Very poor service on our last visit, a very long wait as only one person serving who was dealing with only a few customers but orders that required seasoning and various items on their order. No apology for the long wait from surly staff. The plus side was when we eventually got or order the quality was excellent. Keep the fryer sack the servers .

Used to call in this place when it was Harper’s when we deliver to the mill in Fridaythorpe. Not a big fish and chip eater but when it was Harper’s they were delicious (a sign in the shop said “All our food is cooked in beef dripping” .... man, they were to die for !!). Called in tonight and didn’t realise that they had changed owners to “The Deep Blue” or something like that?? What a difference, negative really; fish was tough albeit cooked fresh and also the price seems to have hiked up . Needless to say that from somewhere I looked forward to getting to, I now would only go at an absolute stretch. Very disappointed, if you want award winning food, stick to Harper’s around the area.... there’s a mint one in Hornsea !!!! New owners should take note.

Called here last week for Fish and Chips, as had not been for a few years. Sadly, it has changed hands, and the quality and price is not as it was. OK, but probably won't be off there again.

On way home from the airport, we usually stop here . Didn’t know it had changed hands. While I enjoyed my fish and chips,my husband did not. Said his didn’t taste good. The prices are way too high for what you get. The portions of fish seem smaller. Don’t know why they are charging so much more than everywhere else.

Becoming a regular at this fish shop. Fish is always cooked fresh food is always hot never had a problem with my food and the staff are so pleasant. There even starting recognising us shows they care about there customers. Definitely be coming back here

Excellent staff and food, ordered fish bites and regular chips & regular chips with mushy peas , the 4 fish bites were equal to a large fish in a lot of places and the batter was light and crisp, the regular chips would be equal to a large portion else where very nice,lovely mushy peas. So if you only have a small appetite go small. Excellent value for money.

If you are feeling hungry please drive past this place! You have been warned ! Firstly I must admit the place looks clean and inviting and the staff were great but that's where the good points end. The food is extremely overpriced for what you get you might need a magnifying glass to see your food! the portions are that small! In fact I thought that the famous highwayman Dick Turpin had returned to Yorkshire and taken up selling fish and chips! I had to ask twice when I was told the price! If your on a diet please ignore me and go in but if you want to have a proper feed go elsewhere as you will be sorely disappointed.

Great fish n chips. Was suprised at the size of the "small" haddock as it was bigger than most standard ones in other restaurants. Served by a smiley young lady.....excellant. Slight drawback is parking as there are only a few roadside spaces.

We had drive to wetwang and had fish and chips and the staff was excellent and I had the odd which was hot and lovely and homemade tartar sauce

Have started coming back here every week when I have a day off work. Didn’t have a couple issues ages ago with the chips always being cold but this has changed and the fish is fried to order which is great as I’ve noticed a lot of chip shops don’t do that now. Fish is hot and fresh sometimes a little chewy but that’s only on the end bits. Chips always seem fresh and hot and the way I like a chip nice and soft. One of my favourite chippys and worth the hour drive every week to get them as they taste far better than my local ones.

I’ve visited this local fish and chip shop for over 5yr and have always found it to be excellent until yesterday. The chips were old and hard and the fish had been left in the heater cabinet too long. Fish used to be cooked to order on customer arrival and maybe it’s the time of year, but the fish was not cooked to order yesterday.

This establishment cooks the best Gluten Free fish & chips I have tasted. We visit a few times each year and only wish it wasn't over an hours drive away! They are always cooked to perfection, of very decent portion size and taste delicious eaten on the patio area outside.

Having read several reviews ,mostly negative,I was apprehensive about calling there,I was pleasantly surprised to find it was as good as it always has been ,the young lady serving was obviously new and was not familiar with things ,but apart from that things were all good ,excellent white firm fish,lovely chips ,so no complaints ,will be going again...

I've been 4 times in the last few months and in my opinion the fish can't be bettered.

I used to love visiting for fish n chips when meeting up with my biker mates up north when I lived in London, as the fish was fantastic and so much better than anything darn sarf. Now I'm back home living in Yorkshire I had a solo ride out for lunch today with high hopes. I ordered a small haddock, cooked fresh, but alas it was chewy haddock with soft batter. Add to the disappointment, all I had was a small haddock, a cup of tex in a paper cup and a small bottle of water...£6:90 Suffice to say, I won't be back.

We visit here quite regularly. It's handy for our home and often on the route back home when we are out. My impression is that this place has gone downhill since it changed hands. Generally it seems that standards and ingredients are not as good as they used to be. Whilst I cannot be certain I believe standards have reduced and prices have increased.

Been going to this chippy for years when it was Harpers always smashing good portions,Now fish dry must be frozen chips soggy don't offer you forks etc I asked for trays not in them.very dissapointed will not be going back,usually on a Friday lunchtime queuing only 4 in.Spoke to a few bikers who used to go all said won't go back.

For the past few years have had fish n chips from brandesburton shop weekly. Past 2 weeks the fish has been disgusting either been frozen or not fresh, grey in appearance and that off fishy smell, batter good. After the first disappointment thought it might have been just a glip and would give it another try. Definitely won't be gong again. Last half term had fish n chips from Wetwang shop and that was delicious! So whats going on at brandes not cheap either. If didnt live rurally would have taken back

No pleasantries from staff and one of the girls struggled to smile at customers. The food was ok and wasn't too expensive.

Been here a number of times but every time I have had a painful long wait served by staff wh never get out of second gear. They never have anything ready.Food very disappointing and not good value for money. Overpriced. Could cook it quicker at home.

I have been buying my fish and chips here for many years. They are good, but about 18 months ago they seemed to lose a bit of somet6. They used to be the best around, but not any more. They are still good, but sometimes the fish tastes like it has been frozen, it's a bit rubbery. Still, it's a welcome break from cooking and I will continue to buy them, just not as often.

This used to be a great little fish and chip shop, I live in Malton, so it’s not to far away.

We have called in here a number of times on the way to Hull and the East Coast - and its always been a better than average chippie. It's no Michelin star winner, but the staff, other customers and locals are really friendly - and they even have an outdoor seating area. I would recommend it if passing!

Decided to go for a relaxing drive after a hard week

Harpers was our favourite fish and chips for many years. We have visited them all or just about : Wetwang, Beverly, Staxton, Hornsea, Market Weighton, Brandesburton and York. Not any more tho they are only average at most. Deep blue have totally ruined the best fish and chips forever.

If you want a quality serving of fish and chips away from the busy, crowded, seagull infested yorkshire coast. Wetwang's Harpers is always at the top of my list if i crave a friday treat

I was a bit disappointed with my fish & chips. The fish was rather bland, and the batter tapered away into a void which made the fish look larger than it really was. Chips okay.

I arrived at tea time on a Friday, it was busy and as I was visiting a friend and hadn't had tea I had to grin and bear it, after a short time I ordered haddock chips and mushy peas, hot, well cooked and no complaints at all.

First visit since the change of ownership. Definitely seen a change, no long queues of happy diners, in fact from the outside it looked closed. Ordered fish and chips twice, then nearly fainted at the cost - £15.20! Could have sat in comfort at the next door pub with a drink for that.

This chip shop has been taken over by Deep Blue fisheries, and it isn't the same as when Harpers owned it. We had been here some years ago and enjoyed gluten free fish and chips. We have just re-visited the shop and have been served with fish and chips of a lot less quality. The batter was quite good and crunchy, but some of the chips were black along one side of their length, not just at the ends. Looked like they had been dropped on the floor. They didn't taste as good as they used to, and the fish was very flat for cod. We won't be going there again.

I've been to my fair share of fish and chip shops and I've never known one consistently serve such good fish and chips. I've been here dozens of times and I've never had a bad experience the fish is spot on and the portions are huge its definately worth a detour if you're ever nearby.

We called in with friends for a take-away last weekend. We bought 4 haddocks and every one of them were soaked in grease. Also the batter was dark. Tasted awful. If we were eating in, we would have returned and told the staff. Would not recommend

Thought we'd go and see what all the fuss was about, I've been many times but I must admit it was as good as ever but at £7.50 for fish and chips I thought was expensive so we asked for small chips only to be told we can't have small with fish!!!anyway it was all non greasy and tastefully but at £31 for 4 of us and that's takeaway I may not be going as oftener
