Harpers is usually the best fish and chips around. A large haddock is just that - large. Not tonight. I opened the paper with my usual excited expectation to be greeted by a sprat not a whale. I asked for it salted - nothing. The two battered jumbo sausages that I also ordered were disappointing and cold in the middle. Sorry Harpers - I'm a regular and a fan, but not tonight!

We got fish & chips to take away and my partner left quite unhappy with the attitude of the employee he got served by. Moody and rude. Not accomadating to his request of a non-buttered breadcake either, surley they had some in the back that had not already been buttered? A polite 'No, I'm sorry, we don't have that' would have been fine but when met with just a short reply of 'no' it does grate on the nerves just a bit. (yes it's not the end of the world but when you're already not getting the best service it just adds to it)Fish & chips were just as expected and I drove away feeling pretty full. :)

Visited today 9.12.20 for my mums birthday what a lovely surprise when we were shown to our table there was balloons and a birthday banner, talk about going that extra mile. Food was fantastic and far too much. The waiters Darren and Sam were very professional and checked we had enough of everything , not often you see such polite and friendly staff can’t wait to be able to come visit with the rest of the family once restrictions are liftedThank you for such an enjoyable visit

Just been to Harper’s fish and chip shop,after a very busy working day. The service l received from Carole was outstanding .There were queues of people,she handled them quickly and professionally ,her manners were impeccable ,efficient and service with a smile,and cleaning the countertop with detox at every available moment,making clients feel safe. My husband and l own various businesses,l was really impressed with this delightful lady,a true professional .Thank you Carole for a great service,we shall be back !

Doesn’t matter what time you chose to come to Harper’s they never disappoint , late stop of for us on the way to Filey around 8:45 , fish and chips were as fresh as they would have been at start of lunch , we cannot fault this little Gem of a restaurant/takeaway nor the staff who are just lovely.. you’ll have to travel along way to beat these (if that’s possible) ..⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Excellent food, excellent service and excellent staff. I required a gluten free meal. Although the menu was limited for me they went out of their way to provide me with an lovely meal. A wonderful lady by the name of Carol could not do enough to ensure I had a really nice meal out with my husband. I was even offered a choice of dessert which was a pleasant change from ice cream which is the usual dessert in most other places where I am able to eat out. Carol actually made me a sherry trifle and it definitely was a sherry trifle . A most enjoyable meal out for both my husband (who also received a great fish and chip dinner) and myself. Will be visiting again soon.

We went into the restaurant area for fish and chips. The restaurant interior was nice and the staff were good. The fish and chips itself were very nice. Not at all greasy, batter not too heavy on the fish and a good size.

Met family here, first meet up since lockdown, got takeaway fish and chips and say on benches outside, very good quality meal, the fish was plump tasty and really good batter, chips were crisp and fluffy, very enjoyable and will definitely visit again.

Had the staxton special, large cod or haddock, chips, bread butter and pot tea. Cost 12 pounds, but only 6 pounds with eat out to help out deal. Lovely thick chips, big flakes of fish with crispy batter. Would take some beating. There was also a seniors deal, Inc ice cream for 10 pounds.Looking forward to another visit soon. Lots of other things on menu, nice smart restaurant. Good parking. Highley recommended.

We called in this lunchtime with our 4 Year old grand daughter and on arrival the staff were very welcoming and the lady that served us was very friendly and had lots of time for our very chatty grand daughter which was very nice. We ordered the Staxton special,which is a Large cod or haddock with chips, tea or coffee and bread and butter and chicken bites, chips and beans, orange juice and ice from the childrens menu. The order arrived promptly and the fish was fresh, large and chunky and cooked to perfection and the chips tasted fantastic and the grand daughter's chicken bites were chunks of proper chicken breast meat cooked in lite batter, not like the rubbery reformed stuff you get at other places. All in all a fantastic experience, excellent quality food service and staff. We live in Scarborough so we'll be visiting Harpers again on a regular basis. Can't believe we've never tried this place but we're so glad we did. We've tried a lot of places in Scarborough and this is by far best food and service That we've had.

Just visited Harpers this evening and the food was excellent. Carol the floor manager was extremely friendly and her team worked very hard to ensure social distancing was complied with throughout our visit. The food was faultless and value for money.Well done Carol and you team. We will definitely be calling again.

We decided to try this restaurant after buying a car in Driffield and having a ride out. We didn't know it existed. Excellent service , excellent food. We were made to feel safe...Very clean restaurant and spotlessly clean toilets We will be back for some more very soon

We called into Harpers on our way home from Scarborough to Northamptonshire. We were a bit miserable as we were heading home and the rain wasn't helping our moods, but the restaurant was clean and inviting. We found the place to be an absolute find, the food was excellent and piping hot - just what we needed. We have decided that Harpers will be our new treat to finish each trip to Scarborough.

Never expected that our first visit to a restaurant after lock down would be to a fish and chip restaurant but I’m so glad we came to Harper’s. We visited as a party of 7 with 3 kids and the staff were excellent in getting us a table. The food was excellent and was brought to our table swiftly. The restaurant was very clean and the toilets were spotless. Overall the service was excellent as well as the food and I’ll definitely be eating here again with my family.

In these difficult times people need reassuring they are doing a good job and Harper’s are doing just that. We had a takeaway a few days ago and so brought my elderly parents out to try the restaurant. The coved measure in place are both reassuring and practical and the service is brilliant considering this. Adam was fantastic with my parents and my mum even commented that by the end of the meal she had forgotten that we had restrictions in place. The fish and chips were piping hot and honestly the best we have ever had, great value senior deals which were more than enough to fill us. I cannot recommend these guys highly enough and if your wondering where to go after lockdown this is the place. Well done guys!

As a family of 4 adults and 2 children we called on the way back from Filey for take out fish and chips and ate them on the benches outside. The fish was huge, thick, flaky and beautifully cooked. The chips were golden and delicious. These really were the best fish and chips we have had.Praise must also be given in these challenging times to the hygiene and well thought out approach.....we didn’t have to touch anything or be near anyone.....so could wait outside whilst food cooked, staff offered to put on salt and vinegar so you don’t have to touch communal condiments, and when I hesitated at the outside bin on leaving....not sure how to open it....a staff member came out with kitchen roll on hand so I could pass over my rubbish and not touch anything. Excellent customer service.

Visited in January for take away fish and chips and really enjoyed our lunch. Asked for sachets of Brown sauce on ordering and were told they had run out but the very pleasant young server went into the restaurant to get a small tub for us. This time the batter was too thick and not cooked well and the chips tasted like they had been hanging about for a while. Again no brown sauce but this server just said they had run out and never got asked for it anyway. We used to come here when the place first opened but after a while the standards fell, seems things haven’t really changed.

Visited with daughter and ordered scampi & chips and pensioner's special. Scampi was fine, but my excellent portion of haddock was undercooked, greasy & not drained and covered with thin, soggy "Yorkshire pudding" batter.A disappointing evening. For premium prices, one should receive premium quality. Battered fish, cooked to order must be one of the simplest dishes to produce well, but so many establishments today can apparently only write a good menu.Will not visit again, ever.

Visited 29/2/20 Had the pensioner special.Service efficient prompt and friendly.Food quality good and tasty- fish size very good especially considering this was a pensioner special, chips plentiful tasty and nicely fried to a golden colour Had been anaemic on a previous visit when I gave a very poor review (april 2019).Gave Harpers another try following our disappointing visit april 2019 after reading more recent positive reviews.

Called in on my way back from the airport. Mid afternoon, so very quiet. Quick pleasant service, very nice fish & chips. Reasonably priced. Only fault to pick, is furniture looks a bit shabby, must get quite a bit of use!

Called at Harpers on our way to a short break in Scarborough. We had the over 60s special. Scrumptious food,helpful, friendly staff, great service. Will definitely visit again. Generous portion size, make sure you are hungry when you visit.

We visited their take away just next to the restaurant. Carol and Jezz were brilliant. Carolexplained how to make scraps taste the best and my little boy Fraser agreed. We also got to taste ‘chip spice’ which was new to me. The Fish and chips were very good - chips better than a renowned rival in Scarborough. We will definitely return.

I visited the fish and chip takeaway and I am pleased to report that the same excellence that can be found in the restaurant transfers to the takeaway. Exceptional food quality, was the original reason for my visit, but feel compelled to highlight the exceptional customer service. Cheerful, engaging, very professional... I was served by a lady called Carol... her performance was outstanding. I have trained staff in the hospitality industry in customer service for 30 years, and couldnt fault her performance... truly refreshing ! Well done.

Called in between Christmas and New Year around 5:30 and shown to a table straight away. Young staff polite and efficient. Fish in a very light batter which meant fish not overpowered by frying flavour. Chips well cooked. Portions are Yorkshire portions so make sure you are hungry!

Called in, like others after a New Year’s Day coastal walk. We can cut them some slack as this is prob not normal staff, but it took 45 mins to get a cup of tea and although when food arrived - which was good, we were missing numerous items which took 3 or 4 requests to get.

We were on our way back home after a lovely day out in Filey and decided to stop at Harper’s for ‘tea’ on the way - our hosts had been here before and it was good back then.

We had the 60+ deal, this consisted of a pot of lovely coffee bread and butter( and the butter was at room temperature and so easy to spread a small but very welcome forethought) a generous plate of delicious fish and chips followed by Apple Crumble and custard all for under £10

Visited today and ordered from the Christmas menu which seemed really good value. Ordered extra sides. The food was very good. Had to remind staff we'd ordered extra sides though. We were unable to get dessert as the member of staff serving was talking to customers at the next table for around 15 minutes which seemed excessive. They must have been able to see we'd finished our main course. Wondered if this may be a ploy to save on desserts. We are regular customers but won't be returning.

This place has always given such good friendly service. The fish is delightful soft and white with a crunchy batter. The chips are always good. Highly recommend.

We have just been to Harper’s fish and chip restaurant to sample their gluten free fish and chips and what a treat it was the batter was so light and the fish so fresh it was perfection , the attention to detail was first class , the restaurant staff so welcoming and a lovely relaxing atmosphere just lovely , we will be returning again many times thank you

Perfectly cooked fish & chips, bread & butter, tea or coffee and a dessert, fantastic value, friendly and efficient, going again soon!!

We stopped here after being in Scarborough for the day and found it really pleasant, we had to wait for a while as everything is cooked fresh and it was fairly busy and we both had the Staxton Special, you need to be hungry as it was really filling but is on a par with the best fish and chips i have had elsewhere, definitely will be back when in the area again :-)

It was a snap decision to stop here for a late lunch on our way home after a business trip and were really pleased we did. Fish was fresh and tasty as were the chips and the fish pie tasted great too. Tee service was quick, friendly and efficient and the prices weren't too bad. We sat in the restaurant but there is a takeaway counter too.

Party of 3, visited Saturday 14th September mid afternoon. Everything was perfect - great service, food excellent- 60+ Special with dessert. Main Course & Dessert portions were amazing.

Sat 03 Aug 19 early afternoon, the restaurant was quiet. Attentive staff, as only 1 other table occupied. My wife chose the senior citizens special and a small cod for me. The special was a small F&C; with bread & butter and a pot of tea + dessert for £9.95. Good value for money BUT the main course lacked taste. The dessert was large and tasted good. I found the cashier rude even though we left a tip for the the good table service we received

Called in with extended family (8) Seated and sorted in no time. Amazing fish and chips Ben the manager was very accommodating.

Stopped off at Take-away at 6;30pm Sunday evening. 5 people in queue, took ages to get served (over 30 mins) ordered '2 lite bite' @£4.60 and small F&C; @ £6.60 plus a few soft drink cans. I think the Take away side provides the meals for the restaurant so hence there could be delays. My fish was not good (I think it was frozen) and tasted very fishy ie OLD , chips were good though . I've been here many times in the past and it was always good, but today was poor

We visited saturday night for my nieces second Birthday, we was a group of nine.

I called in here on my way home just before 8.00pm one evening earlier this week. I only wanted a bag of chips as I was driving, late home and very hungry. As I parked my car I saw a retired couple parking up. I asked for my chips and as the lady made her way across the car park the young man who had served me was glancing anxiously at his colleagues. I paid and was adding the obligatory salt & vinegar as she approached the counter. Before she had a chance to place an order, the young man told her that they stopped frying at 8.00pm and they only had chips.

Called in July for a quick tea and it was very nice. The fish was lovely and the chips as well. The staff were very nice. We have called on previous other accations and found the staff miserable and hardly anyone in.

Having wandered around Scarborough for the day we decided to have fish and chips on the way home. Arrived around 6pm, plenty of parking. Decided to eat in rather than take away and the restaurant was approx half full. We had 2 Staxton specials and a cod and chips. Staxton specials were Haddock & Chips with bread & butter and a pot of tea. To be honest the cod and chips would have been more than enough as the specials, especially the fish were huge. Really thick with huge flakes of fish and the batter was very light and crispy. The curry sauce wasn’t as nice as other places we’ve tried, but I guess this is down to personal taste. Plenty of cups of tea from the teapot and extra hot water. We left absolutely stuffed and there was no way we could of managed any of their puddings which looked great. We’d definitely visit again.

Absolutely lovely visit here this week. Stopped off en route to our caravan to fill our tummies. 2 adults and 3 kids. Staff were amazing, could not do enough for us. Had a great colouring competition on which kept the little ones busy. Offered advice on meal sizes and portions for the little ones. Lovely delicious food, plates clean! Delightful cup of tea. Will definately return.

To say we were the last order of the day Debbie and Sam couldn't have been more friendly with excellent customer service, nothing was a problem despite being really busy. Foods fantastic to 😆👍

Fantastic dining experience with 3 generations gathering to celebrate a significant birthday. Helen, Kayleigh, Jack and Cairde made sure we were looked after very well. If you are looking for fish and chips, this place can not be beaten. If you are looking for anything for anything other than fish and chips, you won’t be disappointed. Everyone from Granny Margaret down to young Tilly left with a very full and happy belly.

I’ve visited the takeaway quite a few times over the last year or so. It’s like walking in to a morgue now with the staff on the counter. Haddock tasteless and barely cooked! Last time, I will not be back.

Stopped off on our way home, staff were very welcoming. The food was great. Our little boy enjoyed his tea. We found the staff to be extremely friendly and found time to talk to our little boy.

Cannot fault this restaurant, Kylie and Lauren, plus all other staff members, under the guidance of a lovely manageress, always have a smile and warm welcome for customers. Food is always hot and plentiful, service prompt and pleasant. Nothing is too much trouble for any of them.

We visited twice while on holiday recently. We had the pensioners special, for the over 60’s. a good size meal of fish and chips, bread and butter, tea or coffee, and a choice of sweet, all for under £10. The fish was cooked beautifully and the batter was light and crispy, we had the apple crumble with ice cream for sweet, only one word describes this - delicious. The staff we’re friendly and the service was quick and efficient.

I came few days ago and was surved by a very friendly lad called Jack he was quick to surve and gave us good food and better customer service I would definitely recommend this and will visit again

Came in for a takeaway today (saturday) and I was very impressed with how cheerful the staff were! The two cooking were singing away to the radio, was great to see. The fish was perfect, crispy and was ready quickly. Will definitely be back.

Today I decided to stop here for a take away for my young girls. Take away was what was needed as we were in abit of a rush. My whole experience here was the worst customer service I have EVER experienced in my 50 years.

We called in whilst stopping in a holiday cottage nearby. The service was out of the world and the staff we great with our two little girls. They really pulled out all the stops. The food was served quickly and it was really tasty. Best chips we have had in a long time. We will definitely be calling in again before we head home!

Being away with the family, we decided on a fish and chip supper and asking around, we were recommended to Harpers. It was a recommendation well worth persuing.

I know that people often review when things aren't to their liking. I've reviewed this place on Google and have always been happy. What a disappointment today. Old chips, barely warm, and a large fish that was roughly the size of a small one. What a shame, Harper's has always been a favourite.

Have visited harpers before and fish and chips always excellent. Visited on good Friday for takeaway and ordered large fish and chips with mushy peas. Did not have to wait too long so took them home. I live in the village so within 5 minutes was unwrapping them. The soggy batter stuck to the paper so there was no batter left on the fish at all. The fish was Luke warm so had to microwave it. Very disappointed especially as thought £7.60 for fish and chips was expensive no batter on fish. Did email them but after a week no reply so will not be visiting again.

Me and the wife have visited here quite a few times on the motorbike after a day out at the seaside, We have never eaten in the restaurant we have always used the take out and sat outside. We have never found a bone in the fish, the fish always comes skinned and is sooooo fresh with loverly big white flakes you can just taste how fresh it is. The batter is also so tasty and crisp. You also get a generous portion, you can choose large or normal size fish. I can't eat a normal size fish and chips as there is plenty. This place has to be the best fish and chip shop around.

Haven’t been to Harper’s Staxton for about 3 years (apart from take away) The restaurant was then sluggish at best and food mediocre.

On average we eat there approx once a month and have never been disappointed.

Terrible service in the takeaway. Food ordered and then once it was been wrapped they realised they hadn't cooked the sausage I had ordered. Eventually got the food, took it home and discovered the fish I had ordered had not been put in the bag. Returned to sort it and found the serving staff rude with no attempt to make up for their mistake. Had to wait for a fish to be fried by which time all of the other food was cold. Will not be going again

Fish very dry,chips not very warm,had to leave them.when I completed ,orders were left on hot plate but this was turned off.I asked why my food was not hot enough,was told hot plate was not working.this proves they were not serving hot food hot,under the reccomened 74 degrees.will not visit again.

I came in today with my boyfriend for a meal and was welcomed warmly by a young man. There were several other tables in, so we had plenty of time to admire the place as it was our first time visiting the restaurant. However, while the two young lads were working hard, there was an older looking man who appeared to be in a different coloured uniform who was wondering around aimlessly with his eyes glued to his phone screen. At first we didn’t think he was a member of staff, until he started to wonder behind the bar and into the back rooms which then made us realise he was also a member of staff. We had no idea what the restaurant would be like, but I don’t think we’ll be revisiting due to the level of unprofessionalism which was displayed by this member of staff. The food and service was superb from the rest of the staff but to see that one member of staff display such a lack of respect and care has put both me and my partner off.

Kept getting order wrong, was cold when we finally got it and guy behind counter was eating with his hands then handling food, won't be going back, only went because of good reviews, guess we got an off day.

Went to get some fish and chips plus childrens meals for tea..when i ordered a asked for two medium fish and chips and was told that they don't do that they only do small or large which was about 7.60 for large fish and chips..i decided that was too much and went to Crossgates fish and chip shop which was considerably cheaper. Didn't want small fish but didn't want to pay for large as it was too much...shame really as they lost a good order..

Just had a lovely lunch. Great place great food and served wonderfully by the lovely Benny. She is very efficient very helpful and has a wonderful smile.

Visited today for first time in a few months and found it as good as always. Very friendly staff, food order taken quickly and delivered to table piping hot within 10 mins. We had the senior specials, excellent size portion, very nice tasty fish, excellent batter and the chips perfectly cooked. We had mushy peas as an extra which were reasonably priced and just right. Good choice of sweet, we settled for icecream and got two generous scoops.Staff were attentive offering extra water for the tea and even helping me log on to the free wifi. Nice and clean including the toilets. My father is disabled and he found the place easy to access. Only slight complaint the toilets area is very cold, it certainly will discourage lingering!

Cannot believe some of the 'nit picking' reviews I have read about this place. People with food issues really should be going to Fish and Chip restaurants with their eyes open! Would recommend to any 'patient' and 'considerate' visitor passing through Scarborough and remember this isn't London where every restaurant is perfect and service is super efficient 24/7, which isn't the case anyway by a long way from my experience! The overwhelming number of previous positive reviews on trip advisor for this Harpers' speak for themselves. My family and I have visited the restaurant many times over the past few years and have always been happy with the service and high quality of food. My wife and I regularly visit several times a month to collect a family meal which is a treat. My daughter insists on the chicken bites which she says are amazing and "much better than McDonalds". The staff are always friendly, hard working and efficient and the guy in charge of the takeaway side of things always knows what I will order (2 Haddock, 1 large chips, onion rings, 12 chicken bites and 2 pots of mushy peas). He quotes it back at me every time! Cheaper than McDonalds and Pizza Hut by £10 for a family of four, so great value and personal service. Sometimes service can be a little slow but this is either because there are loads of customers or the staff are making sure the food is cooked correctly at the same consistently high standard. I'm always happy to wait in these circumstances.
