First impressions… very unfriendly bar staff. Wine was revolting. Food ok but big portions don’t mean excellent food. Salad came undressed-after asking for some oil I was told they only had Caesar dressing. Came in a small jug with a tiny bit in-for 2 people. Then we were expected to pay extra for side plates and forks for the birthday cake. Bar staff told us we had to leave as the pub was closing at 2:30. No mention of it when we booked for 16 people at 1pm. Do they often have such big parties on a weekday?? Very disappointing as we have been coming to this village forever as our ancestors lived here.

Sunday drive through the Ribble valley and accidently found this pub. Friendly customer outside. Inside a traditional bar. Felt cosy and welcoming. On the bar was a pump with gluten free beer. My missus is gluten intolerant so it's a bit of a lottery what food is safe. The menu did not show any signs of food type like veggie or gf so we asked. Turns out their baked ham and eggs in a cream cheese sauce and salad on the side were good. Big chunks of hock and two baked eggs in a cream sauce. For a different Sunday lunch it was great value. We will have this again. Lovely staff. Cheers.

Just called in for a couple drinks after a local walk. A very warm welcome was given by the barmaid upon entering the premises. The bar had a great selection of real ales which I sampled two of, firstly opting for a pint of Theakstones best & then theakstones OP both being extremely well kept! The pub is like stepping back in time which I personally love. Didn’t have any food but the food being served did look good and will definitely be eating here the next time I come through.

Went for a late Sunday lunch and beef ordered all round. Food arrived and it was basically a cold plate of food put into a microwave then covered in boiling gravy to try to make food appear hot. Menu said home made Yorkshire puddings but all ours were supermarket ones. May be because it was outside 12 - 2.00 hours. Went two years ago and was £9 now £13. Beer is also expensive and staff need to go on a customer service course as don't seem to care if you are a customer or not. Landlord seemed miserable and in wrong profession.

Basic pub, but food was excellent. Gammon, steak and ale pie, and brisket was fabulous. Guest ale was on tap, expertly poured. Stone flags on the floor add to the olde world authenticity in this picturesque village.

Very traditional pub almost lost.in time from the 80s. Some people will love this type of pub but others wont. Staff seemed OK food was mixed soup was very tasty and gave great expectations for the roast dinner which was very poor with basic vegetables and overcooked beef. The fish pie was not bad.

Fantastic Sunday roast, came 3 weeks ago too and lovely food again, our party had lamb dinner, beef dinner. Fish and chips, only downside was gravy wasn't think but had nice taste (could have done with being thicker in my opinion) you get 1 small yorkshire pudding so we all payed £1 extra for another pudding. Had desserts homemade cheesecake is too die for. Big piece red Berry and mint chocolate was the best ever had. When came 3 weeks ago roast was £10 now increased to £12. Still nice food. Lovely staff and home from home.

One particular member of staff ruined our visit to the pub. She made us feel very uncomfortable, and made our experience quite tense. She actually barged into our accommodation, opposite the pub to inform us that we were late (which we weren’t). Then proceeded to argue with us about minor booking details. The seating arrangement was not set up for our group prior to arriving, despite booking months in advance. We were reluctant to write this review because the rest of our experience was acceptable, but after the night, we felt it was necessary to. We were originally meant to eat there two nights in a row, but cancelled the second night due to the deeply upsetting experience. Some of the party returned the following night and were pleasantly surprised by the service by other member of staff.

We walked in and waited for quite some time before we were even spoken to but we saw that the outside garden was busy and some of the earlier diners indoors were asking for bills and paying them. Nevertheless, we stayed patient and were served by a slightly grudging older lady whose shift had just started. The food is varied and cheap - how do they make any money with roast beef on a Sunday at £8.00? Decent quality menu. Smokey old inn, bulging with atmosphere in a really quaint countryside village.

Had an overnight stay with friends at this interesting and beautiful country inn and enjoyed a delightful evening meal and a equally substantial breakfast. There are a variety of dishes to choose from starting with a varied selection of starters [including vegetarian dishes], main courses and desserts. All the produce is locally sourced and very fresh. The dishes are quite substantial and if you prefer smaller portions it might be advisable to ask. It is very difficult to find room for a dessert otherwise. The Hotel doesn't have a large selection of wines but they have quality ones. The service was very good and welcoming. The bedroom had tea/coffee making facilities, television , en suite bathroom and a very comfortable bed. At breakfast, we were not disappointed by the choice of food available and satisfaction was guaranteed! We then had to have a long walk around the beautiful countryside!

We called in on a Saturday lunchtime and had 2 great meals. The server was lovely and friendly which helped to build a great atmosphere. There was a good selection of dishes on the menu and specials board with some unusual options - the starter of banana wrapped in ham with cheese and cream was definitely a new one to me,I had the mixed fried fish platter which was a large plate served with salad and dips. The prawns and scampi were my favourites, the calamari was rubbery and I would have liked larger portions of the dips.My brother had gammon and eggs which was a very generouts portion with 2 gammon steaks and 2 eggs served with vegetables and chips. The meals at £10 each were great value for the location, portion size and quality of the food.

Jean's sixth-cousin Shirley from nearby Clitheroe took us to this historic inn for dinner. We four dined inexpensively (my treat) and excellently, with superb service. If ever near this small town in rural Lancs, go! Be sure to ask at the bar for permission to go upstairs, where just past the guest rooms is an ancient courtroom, preserved and appearing ready for a trial, right out of BBC dramas. It's like stepping back centuries. Also ask about the inn's unusual name. I have no reservations in lauding this gem.

Visited a week ago and had an expensive drink in the beer garden in the shade of the tree bottom left of the garden, tidied out my rucksack by the and put the phone down and left it by the tree. Got home and knew that I had left it there. Sent a message to the pub telling them where it was - message totally ignored. On Monday evening tried ringing the pub half a dozen times over the evening - they wouldn't answer the phone. Tuesday closed. Wednesday got through after ringing three times (funny way to run a b&b;!). I told them exactly where the phone was and left my contact details. Got no reply, I presumed phone stolen. Phone call received today (a week after leaving the phone) from a gent whose son found the phone in the beer garden - he took it into the pub: no-one was interested so dad rang my home number from the mobile. The staff very evidently hadn't even bothered to look so if you do visit the place ensure that you keep your eye on your valuables - if you leave anything behind you will get no help from the staff. Phone is being returned by Good Samaritan and a gift token will go from me to the youngster when I get his postal address. I shall never visit the place again!

After several days of miserable weather on one of the first fine days we decided to visit The Hark to Bounty again. A nice table looking out onto the village street had been reserved for us and there was good choice of meals available. This was our first visit to this traditional village eatery, food is typical pub fare and is very reasonably priced. We chose the steak and ale pie with chips and vegetables. The pie was very tasty with tender chunks of meat, but unfortunately it was spoiled by the fact it was swimming in gravy. It would have been much better to have been served with a small jug so that you could put as much or as little as you wanted on. It made the pastry soggy as a result, such a shame.

This is not a fancy gastro pub! If that's your thing then definitely go elsewhere. What is on offer here is well priced meals and snacks. We went on a day when soup, sandwich and chips were available for £7.We chose to have 'spring veg' soup which came in a large cup and was clearly homemade and tasty, Hubby chose a BLT sandwich which came with thick good quality bacon (could have been less fat and cooked more, but that's a personal choice),I chose pork and apple sandwich (again, less fat would have been perfect) and smallish portion of chips served in a Ramekin dish that were crispy and tasty. All in all, I thought it represented very good value for money, my husband felt the fat on the meats had spoiled it a bit, but we cut the fat off and enjoyed what we had. Also noteworthy is that having chosen Brown bread for the sandwiches they actually came with a lovely tasty wholegrain/ granary bread, which was a welcome bonus. The beer garden looked quiet and welcoming, but it was too windy for us on the day we visited.

Decided to visit here based on previous reviews and photos- We were looking for a traditional country pub in the trough and found most of them are now gastro-pubs, painted in shades of grey and off-white, serving up food that has been carefully placed on smudges of purée and topped with drizzles of jus. This is not one of the aforementioned gastronomic-pubs, it is a stone-floored cask-ale pub with open fires and traditional food served in generous portions. The burger is immense, delicious Pattie loaded with onion rings, cured bacon and local cheese. A serving of homemade chips and a salad. (The salad let it down, something within it was past its best and tasted off). The lasagne was again a generous portion, missing the salad though.Kids meals were excellent - scampi, chips & salad - big enough for an adult, as was the ham, egg and chips.A variety of well kept cask ales, not seen Old Peculiar for a while! Service was good and dogs greeted too!

We had passed this unusual named pub earlier on in the week, and dropped in for a welcome drink after having done a couple of fine short walks in the attractive Forest of Bowland Are of Outstanding Natural Beauty. There is a good size car park at the rear, and a large grass garden with several picnic benches well spread out, ideal for a drink on a late summer sunny afternoon. The whole of the village is very attractive with stone fronted cottages creating a harmonious context, and the pub sits by the main road junction, handily situated opposite a YHA Hostel, from which they get plenty of trade apparently. The front of the pub is lovely, the inside is a bit like a tardis, with a bar in front facing the front entrance, but then a range of rooms going off left and right. There was a good choice of local real ales which went down well on this warm afternoon. We were not eating here, but there was an impressive list of specials on the board, and they specialise in a wide variety of fish dishes on a Friday, it looks as if the dining experience would be good.

She appeared to be dealing with something but wasn't pouring drinks. She saw us, kept her head down and said nothing. A minute or so later we were still stood there and still she pottered. Then she came out of the bar, walked past us and disappeared, leaving the bar unattended. Still we waited. Finally she returned, pottered a little more, looked up at us and said "yes?" which I assume translated meant, "sorry to keep you waiting, how can I help"!!!Hardly the best of starts. The cooked meats (roast ham for me & roast beef for him) were home roasted & delicious. Definitely will be returning to sample some more. Not cheap on the drinks. Food prices are on par with what you would pay in the area.

Expensive, desperate need of modernisation and the breakfast staff are well, just beyond anything one might experience in this day and age. Almost unique and worth visiting just to reinforce ones view that we have improved so much in the hotel and restaurant industry - but in other places.

Busy pub in the centre of this most attractive village. The menu is varied with lots of specials. The four of us tucked into braised beef brisket, fish pie and beef pie. All very good served with good chips and plenty of vegetables. Although very busy the two staff on duty did a splendid job serving as well as seeing to the needs of drinkers at the bar and indeed residents. There is, by the way, a good selection of cask beers the one supplied by a small Bolton brewer was particularly good. The only slight disappointment was the pud selection and they were not to rave about when they came. Overall, a very good dining experience.

Having been out walking around the nearby a Stocks Reservoir we arrived at this "inn" at 2.05pm only to be told that the cook had cleared away and there was nothing but crisps available. As I understand it an "inn" is a place where a traveller can get food and drink during opening hours and perhaps have a night's stay.In this case there was drink and crisps - not even sandwiches were on offer - this is an open all day establishment but surely not an "inn"!Fortunately the excellent village shop across the road had a wide selection of hot pies which reasonably met our needs at the time.

Years since we have been to the Hark, what a change. You will struggle to find food of this quality for this price anywhere. The beers are good and local, the food is not fancy, it is honest to good home cooked food, evidently the staff drink the gravy by the pint. I had a chicken and ham pie my wife the steak pie both delicious and the portions are huge. The chips are frozen ones but the vegetables are cooked perfectly. My grandson had the local sausage and mash, brilliant and it beat him. It is a lovely homely inn with friendly local staff. Check out the offers to stay, they are really good value. Make the effort and drive but be hungry very hungry.

Went to Hark to Bounty recently while staying in the local youth hostel. There is a small car park at the rear. There are plenty of locals that frequent the place, but they are all friendly. The pub is also dog friendly, which was nice to see. They have open fires, which were going most times when we were there. In terms of temperature, it is not the warmest place I have been in, but by no means cold. My guess is the good thick stone walls make it difficult to heat. They also offer FREE Wifi, which was a godsend, as there was none at the youth hostel, and no hope of getting any phone signal to make calls etc in the village and immediate surrounding area.Initially the owner/landlord appeared a bit quiet and aloof, but I think he is actually a bit shy. Once we had gone in a few times, he was very friendly and pleasant, as were others in the pub.The food was plentiful and very well cooked. Starters were about £5 and the size of a childs meal. Main courses were £10-15 (ish), and again were enormous. It is very unlikely that anyone would have room for 3 courses without leaving some food, but puddings were £4.50 each and again were sizeable. The chocolate orange cheesecake was AMAZING!!! There is also a long list of specials on the blackboard, which are updated daily.I would definitely return again if in the area.

A group of us ate here at the weekend whilst staying at the Youth Hostel. I booked in advance as I was told it could get busy and this was good advice as, although it's quite a large pub inside, all the tables were taken by people eating on a Friday night. It was Fish Night and again in advance I'd been told that all fish courses were £7. For this, I was expecting maybe Fish and Chips and one or two other choices but there were about 7 or 8 different choices of fish dishes for this price. Within our group, we tried about 5 different choices and all were good and reasonable portions for the price. A couple of people did choose from the main menu; despite being told there could be a delay but there wasn't really. Quite a few of us also had a dessert. These were normal pub prices - £4.50. i had the Spotted Dick and Custard which was a bit dry and not sure if it was home-made as it came in a couple of slices. It's a very nice pub with a good choice of beers.

Me and my wife have eaten here a couple of times previously. We called over for lunch on Sunday, there was a young lad behind the bar, waiting on and doing everything really. The place was very quiet though, my wife ordered our food at the bar. The food was excellent we would have had a dessert if he'd come to clear the table and ask. A very dated place in need of some modernisation. There were lots of tables with dirty plates and glasses etc. on, not a pleasant surrounding to dine in. Won't be rushing back again I'm afraid.

Excellent lamb roast with all trimmings. Only two serving staff who also manned bar. Had to request dessert menu at bar as no one asked if we wanted desserts then they did not return so had to go bar to Oder. Other customers were asked.

Dropped in on spec for a meal, travelling through the Forest of Bowland. Made very welcome. The food was made to order, so time for a drink, worth waiting for, and most welcome after an afternoon walking. Generous portions, piping hot, plenty of choice. Busy traditional pub, not spoiled by trendy decor. We enjoyed the whole experience.

Called lunch-time on our first visit to this pub. Friendly welcome by the two young girls. Food was 1st rate - plentiful portions, well cooked and lovely and warm. 2 of us had the Steak Pie which was accompanied by Chips, Cauliflower, Beans and Carrots. A generous helping which defeated my wife. Our daughter had the Lasagne which again was a generous helping accompanied by salad and Garlic Bread. We all thoroughly enjoyed our meals and as the title says 'I'll be back'

We have eaten at the Hark to Bounty several times this summer. The surroundings in the restaurant ant bar are comfortable and the welcome is very friendly. The meal has been very good on all occasions. The pork chop with honey and mustard sauce is wonderful! They can be quite busy at times with the staff seemingly under a lot of pressure, however even on a busy night we were well looked after.

We called here in the wonderful village of Slaidburn at a Saturday lunch time. The quaint old inn was friendly and charming. Their menu offered a good choice of interesting meals or sandwiches, at reasonable prices. We ordered slow cooked lamb shank with rosemary, and gammon steak with eggs AND pineapple. The meals were ultra-generous (the thick gammon steak completely covering a very large plate) but so tasty we could not bear to leave any. Vegetables were varied and well prepared (cauli, peas, carrot and swede, chips, boiled potato and mash. The lamb was sweet and tender, falling off the bone, with very tasty juices; likewise the gammon was lean and tasty, the fat cooked crisp and brown, with delicious free-range eggs. Definitely a place to return, via another refreshing drive through unparalleled countryside. Afterward, we revelled in the chattering river at near by Dunsop Bridge, A perfect sunny day's outing. (Only one little niggle--the dozens of flies hovering ready to attack our food--don't know what can be done about that, when the doors are open for air.)

This place is a family favorite for us. We often come here for birthdays & special occasions as you a guaranteed a great meal. The pub itself is also lovely. A proper country pub with open fires in winter & a good beer garden in summer. Popular with cyclists & walkers due its location I suggest booking in advance. The menu its self is quite traditional & very well priced. But it dos also offer a few different choices too. Portions can be quite large, so I often struggle to eat a whole 3 courses! But that's not a bad thing. Value for money & amazing food is what we want.I have to recommend the fish & chips, game pudding & which ever pie is on that day. They also had a duck dish & a seafood lasagna on the specials board which were fantastic... Also the meringue for dessert is a must =)

I always find the Hark to Bounty lacking character - which is surprising given it's such a historic building in the heart of the delightful village of Slaidburn. We once stayed at the hotel, but recent visits have been for drinks and meals - the last time in front of a blazing fire, with good food.

Visit here with friends and we were really impressed with menu. The food was excellent with a very nice selection of vegetables. Very good choice of real ales. The location is great and all the staff were all very helpful and friendly. Only thing that could be improved although certainly would not put us off returning is the internal decoration / toilets could do with freshening up.

Stopped here on Easter Monday for lunch. Greeted by barman to be told there would be 'longish wait' for food as there was only one person in the kitchen.' Not a good start--surely they could have expected to be busy on a bank holiday? Very hungry and aware of possible long wait, we ordered 'homemade burger with chips and salad'. What a mistake the so-called homemade burger was in fact a frozen processed burger, but at least our dog enjoyed it. Such a shame as the location is great, with a big dog friendly beer garden. I did inform the barman that the menu description is misleading to say the least. The barman offered no refund and said, 'oh, does it say homemade on the menu' and, 'I will pass your comments on to the kitchen'. We might call again for a drink, but not for food!

We stumbled across the Hark to Bounty as we were having a drive out on a quiet Wednesday afternoon. When we entered we weren't convinced we'd made the right choice as it was very quiet, and a little dated...but WOW.....THE FOOD WAS YUMMMEEEEEEE!!!!We warmed to the quaintness of the place, the fire, and the friendly staff...and the food was delicious and super-generous in portion size! The starter of mushrooms was delicious, and almost a meal in itself. The fish pie was very filling and not one bit salty as fish pies can be, the cheese pie was like your granny would make and again, a great size...and even the jacket spud was lovely, with delicious fresh salad. We left full to brimming and with smiles on our faces...thank you Hark to Bounty! :-)
