Hare & Hounds in Isle of Wight

Visited without booking but it wasn't that busy and after checking they offered a table. Drinks were good and we had a free pint as one had been pulled for another customer but not required. We were warned that the food might be a while but it turned up sooner than expected. Two of the meals were good but the scampi & chips was more of a child's portion and not that hot such that the food was cold before it was finished. We ordered a dessert but after, say, 20 minutes it hadn't arrived nor had our plates been cleared so we cancelled it and settled up. The staff were friendly and felt like they were trying but the system seemed muddled and inefficient. So a mixed experience and a score that reflects that.

More or less empty when we visited, ordered at bar and food and drinks brought to table, other than that no service, sat for quite a while with dirty plates no one came to clear away. Food just ok. Steak tough as leather, uncutable let alone trying to chew. Looked forward to eating there as looked lovely from outside but sadly wouldn’t return. On a positive the chips were good. Had anyone come near us to ask if food was ok would of complained as it was paid in full and left

All good, the peacocks were a fun finishing touch The Cheese pasta was very good.

Lovely outside, with peacocks, staff could be better. Missed order and took a while to serve food and forgot an order. Other than that delish

Great meal and wonderful service

Turned up for a spontaneous lunch, offered a choice of tables, good menu choices and adapted a dish to my personal taste. Food arrived quickly and hot and very tasty. Overall a very enjoyable experience with polite staff. We will be back!

We were passing and looking for somewhere to eat. The very attractive buildings drew us in. Outside: Plenty of parking, good swings etc for the kids. Tables front and back although tables out front are sheltered you are looking at a busy road. Inside: lovely bar area at one end of an open plan restaurant. Good decor and plenty of natural light. Drinks: being Greene King there’s a very good choice of beers and a comprehensive wine list. Food: very reasonably priced and quick to come out. Service top notch all round and very friendly staff.

Paula was very welcoming. Highly recommended.

We were a group of five adults dining yesterday and for three of us the food wasn't the best. Also the ale was off so two of us have been ill overnight. Won't be returning.

Lovely service from Paula and Jess. Very pleased with the 3 course meal before 5.00. Small portions suit me better, but still nice quality. Their specials menu had some different options like duck,and reasonably priced. Good choice of low or no alcohol drinks.

Kevin and Paula were kind friendly and we had a laugh, attentive and amazing food and atmosphere, see you again and thank you!

10000% would recommend !! Couldn’t believe the portion size of the kids meal ! I had one very happy 7 year old who keeps begging to come back tomorrow !! We all had burgers and they were absolutely delicious and the fries were incredible too (coming from a pregnant woman who was craving fries🤣)! Thank you so much!

We celebrate we our daughter’s 18th birthday. There were 11 of us and food and service was great. They let us bring a cake and we had a great time!!

I went in with family to the hare and hounds it’s just next to Robin Hill, very friendly staff I was greeted by Jessika she was very helpful and recommended a few dishes. The food was amazing! And the beef pie was out of this world, thank you chef Kenny for the delicious food. I’ve booked in for Sunday for a roast!

I had lunch yesterday at the hare and hounds. The weather was nice and I sat outside. There was peacocks and food was nice! Jessika was so helpful! I had the burger I would recommend it. I’ll be back!

We visited for lunch on 3 days out of 4 when staying on the island last week so can't recommend the place more than that! There was an excellent lunch deal on, the food and service were consistently excellent, a relaxed atmosphere and I really liked the chilled music too!

The team were absolutely amazing for my event I was running up there the other night. So accommodating. Especially when I said probably be 5 people turn up and over 20 ended up arriving 🤣 the space was ideal and just what I needed. Was perfect. Lovely meal at the hare and hounds. Amazing mushroom pie which was stuffed full of filling. The gravy is absolutely delicious. Wonderful service with friendly staff. Nice music playing which isn't to loud so you can still have a nice conversation. Clean and tidy. Deserves to be much busier than it is. Can't wait to come back for a Sunday roast to enjoy more of the gravy. Recommend a visit

We had a lovely meal there today there was 4 of us last time we came it was awful that was about 8years ago looks alot different and more inviting the only thing we wasn't happy with,, it was very cold sitting there no heating on most of the people there left there coats on and couldn't get a hot drink as machine was broken they had a fire but wasn't on

Took my elderly Mum for the Lighter bites meal deal. We absolutely loved it, and had a lovely table view, overlooking a couple of peacocks at the window, which really lifted my mum's mood. The food was exceptional and adequate portion sizes for us both. The waitresses, Paula, Jess and Sue that attended us, were so friendly and helpful and understanding of trying to help my Mum at the age of 92, it's not easy with her mobility etc. 5* service We will definitely return

I highly recommend the Hare and Hounds, I visited with my family last week and the food was outstanding. High quality meal at affordable prices in what I can only describe as the most idealic pub I've ever been to.

The place was packed as I entered and the girl was dealing with a wake however nothing was too much trouble .. will definitely return. Sunday dinner spot on and pie was cracking sue especially lovely

After passing the Hare and Hounds on numerous occasions, we actually decided to pop in. As I was behind the wheel I could only have beer . The food was amazing . Have no complaints at all. The pub itself is s out of this world, clean . And well laid out. I would recommend to all in an instant.

We came as a party on Sunday night, was quiet but paula was very attentive, and looked after us amazingly. The food was good, had the beef roast that was very lovely. We will come again hopefully weather would be better.

I was at this pub and was very well attended by the waitress named Jessika from Brazil, it was a lot of fun at all times she made sure to check if we were okay if the food was tasty and the drinks were great the drinks, I will come back more often and of course Jessika is the sun of that pub

The food is amazing I can’t wait to come back for another visit with friends and family. Matt was so friendly when he came over to see us at our table. Steaks were cooked to the prefect rare thank you.

Excellent food, the chicken schnitzel was wonderful, the place is beautiful and cozy, the waitress Jessika was very attentive and friendly, I had an incredible experience, I will be back soon!

Nice&quiet once ur in and comfortable order taken. The boss had a Hunters Chicken amazing. I had a mixed grill which was the best i've had on the island 🏝 (had a few). Ate here a few times this one being the best. Missed the garlic mushrooms tho she said!!!!

Absolutely great service from Paula and the other staff. The food was absolutely amazing. The chicken and shredded ham pie was amazing it was a proper pie with tons of filling and a great short crust pastry, the mash and gravy was out of this world. The beyond burger was cooked to perfection and the chips where dry and not covered in oil. The only 4 star was the atmosphere but that's due to the time we came and a quiet night.

Had a lovely family meal here! Paula and sue (I think that was there names) were so lovely to our large group and made extra accommodations for our autistic son. - first family meal out since he was a baby. Really appreciate how great they were, and made our meal relaxed and stress free. Boss should definitely give them a nice Xmas bonus ☺️

Had a lovely evening. Food very good, soup was amazing, mixed grill was fabulous. Service was impeccable and staff were very friendly and attentive.

Had a lovely meal out here for my partners birthday. The food was great and well priced, staff couldn't be more attentive and all our needs we're well catered for. Kids loved feeding the peacocks they have roaming the grounds.

Great place to eat and I got to feed a peacock a digestive so what more could you want!!

We have lunch with friends every month at this pub and the food is very good. We had a Christmas lunch there and we nearly got the wrong order but no problem as it was just a blip. Apparently the chef wasn't working that day ( or had left), and one of the regular bar staff stood in. A good portion and it was proper turkey, not processed. The roast spuds were good too. Unfortunately the pig in blanket was very hard as if warmed up in a microwave. Yorkshire was soft and chewy and only a stamp size portion of stuffing. Also, it was just warm. My husband had a special burger with the rosemary salted chips as the chips have always been so good. He said they were soft, not crispy as usual. I expect the fact that the chef wasn't available, the staff did their best and they must be thanked for putting themselves out. I hope the chef returns or they employ another one that is as good as the last one because the everyday food is very good. The staff are very friendly and it is a lovely pub and we enjoy having lunch there. For the everyday food I'd give 5 stars.

Food, waitress, atmosphere & facilities were all amazing and could not fault anything. It's been the best restaurant for food we have found whilst being on holiday. We will definitely come back to yourselves whenever we visit.

Went mid afternoon so not very busy, made to feel welcome and shown to a table, lady came and took our food and drinks order Food was delicious and piping hot.

Waitress Jessica was very helpful and friendly, as was all the staff. Highly recommend the food was amazing, best food we had on isle of wight. Will return.

EDIT following on from our review and Matt's response, we called as requested about the outstanding bill only to discover that the assistant manager had lied about our experience and informed Matt that he had "asked us to leave" as opposed to us refusing to stay and eat the poor quality, uncooked food. He also agreed with us not paying the bill, and leaving when we did. He agreed that with the standard of the service and the poor quality food, he would refund the bill and apologised explaining that a new chef was being trained and he "wasn't getting the hang of it" a fact that Matt has since set us straight about. There is no new chef being trained at all. Matt said he would call us back on Monday, it is now Wednesday and we have heard nothing else. A very sad shame. Absolutely disgusting..... food was cold and frozen, and there was hairs on our food and terrible service as food came out at different times, the gammon was over cooked, we ordered two sides of squid and we got an extra portions of squid as starters .... we waited around 10-15 for each starter to come out the kitchen (bare in mind we only got 4 starters) so we were waiting for over 40 minutes.... it was very poor service, we went for an afternoon lunch expecting a pleasant roast to come home and have nothing to eat..... absolute shame as food was amazing last year and service. I highly recommend to NOT go here if you don't want to walk out as unhappy customers (we walked out hungry angry and annoyed)

A lovely pub with friendly staff. There was a good choice of meals which were a decent portion size.

Don't be put off by the 3.8 star rating you'll find online. But, bear in mind that a wide range of customers are catered for. Yes, there's a dartboard, one-armed bandit, children's play area, a television, on but with no sound (subtitles on, please!) and when we were there, a bit too much Halloween decoration.If you don't want any of that, maybe go elsewhere. We hadn't booked, and arrived in the middle of the afternoon, and were warned there would be a forty minute wait, which was more like 30 minutes in fact, so that was ok, and we weren't in any hurry. As to the really important stuff: the staff were very friendly and helpful, and the food was as good as it should be. We had the steak and ale pie with veg, mash and gravy. Delicious, and crucially, hot, which isn't always the case, particularly with mashed potatoes. The other meal was mac and cheese, again, hot, and with plenty of cheese. The toilets were clean and not unpleasant at all, but watch the water pressure from the taps in the sink (gents) which is a bit fierce! So, it's basic fare, done well, with nice staff, at about the right price. Better than 3.8 we think. Would go again.
