Honestly, this is how a pub should be! Cracking (honestly priced) food. Engaging and knowledgeable staff. Great community atmosphere. My small child, dog and even wife were made to feel very welcome. If you’re in the area, pop by and sample some great northern food, or if you feel the need for change then there is also a fine selection of traditional German food, cooked authentically by the lovely German proprietor. Highly recommend!!!

Oh my gosh what a great pub! We have been before for drinks and the odd bowl of chips (which are excellent proper chips by the way!) before now but this time decided to stop after our walk and have something ‘proper’. I had the pork fillet with brandy cream sauce which is heavenly! Plenty of pork pieces in the nicest sauce I’ve tasted in a long while, to say it sounds heavy with cream and cheese it just tastes silky smooth and so flavourful.. I could drink it by the gallon! My partner had the triple club sandwich, flipping heck it’s huge! What a bargain, you could feed 3 people with it! The pub was busy so there was a little bit of a wait, but for such quality food we didn’t mind one bit, gave us chance to sample another one of the delicious real ales they have on the bar! Staff were very helpful and polite, can’t fault the place we will definitely be returning!!

Lovely greetings and that's where it stops. Not many in and ordered cheese and onion pie for two. Waited ages for it to arrive . 12 chips a sliver of a piece of pie and a big portion of cold peas 🫛 . Pie was lovely, but a child would have pulled their face at the size of the portion. Cost 10.50.a portion. Then visited the toilets. Toilet tissue on the ceiling. Filthy tiles and and dead flies in coweb over the toilet door pillar, which looked like it had been there forever. Taken photos. Then came back in to see 4 people at a table talking to who I presume was the landlady. On the cloth seats where the customers two dogs . Dog friendly pub yes. But lay on the seats where the next folk come along and sit on whatever the dogs have left for them. So if you do visit this place I'd do two things. Have a change of clothes, so you don't pick up dog hairs and anything else that's transferred off there undercarriage. Two prepare a packed lunch for when you have eaten and left the premises. Would not like to see their kitchen. Not one that I will return to. So I'm another one that will not be doing, I will be back

Visited in a walking party of 23! having prebooked our meals in advance. They had reserved tables for us at one side of the bar. There was a fair selection of beer and the friendly barmaid dealt with us efficiently. Credit to her. The food arrived in fairly quick succession and everyone seemed to enjoy their choices, including the German dishes which gave variety. Again credit to 'mine hostess' for a polished service. My fish and chips were excellent with a more than adequate portion size. The prices are lower than average for pub food these days. Will definitely come again when in the area.

Went here after a nice walk around the reservoir for a drink, once sat down the bar maid and I assume her dad decided to have a blazing row at full volume about a completely ridiculous situation with no consideration for anyone else in the pub. The landlord was even sat at the table and let the whole thing happen, We had to leave because of how uncomfortable it was to have to listen to. Completely unprofessional and ruined what was supposed to be a relaxing experience, won’t be returning

My husband and I visited tonight after walking our dog in Roddlesworth Reservoir. We ordered food, I had schnitzel which was amazing and my husband had fish ( or a whale as our server called it) which he thoroughly enjoyed. We live locally and didn’t realise this gem was within walking distance to us. We are going back on Sunday for breakfast. Highly recommend this pub for food or just to kick back and chill with a drink.

Booked with a group, and overall the experience was very pleasant. we were told that there were a few people before us which was ok, but there were only three tables of two and the food took ages to come. Most people were happy with their food except for the Schnitzel which the menu said came with Bratkartoffel or chips. I chose Bratkartoffel which I thought was fried potatoes with onion and bacon. However, when it came it was only potatoes. When I enquired about this they said that there is no bacon or onion included if served with schnitzel. In that case they should make it clear on the menu and call it fried potatoes. I felt a bit cheated. However, I would visit again as the atmosphere in the pub was very pleasant and the staff friendly.

After completing a walk around Abbey Village and Darwen route up to Darwen Tower in large amounts of rainfalls, this pub was the perfect place to dry out and dine out as an reward. After enjoying working and travelling around Italy and Austria teaching English as a second language for several summers, the Schnitzel meal with a pint of Bierra Moretti ticked all the boxes for me. This was not my first visit to this pub as I have stopped off there for drinks after previous walks, but it was well worth coming back. The staff were a great help and made my previous experiences very enjoyable. I could not fault this place as a perfect village pub without reservation especially after any walks around the Chorley and Blackburn areas.

This was my last visit to the pub for a while because of the Covid restrictions. Normally I visit about every couple of months. It was a Tuesday early afternoon so very quiet. I came in with my very muddy dog after a walk around the reservoirs. The girl serving checked with me that I'd checked in on the NHS Track & Trace app. I had, as the barcode is shown prominently as you go in, along with hand gel. There is also a clearly marked one-way system for entering and leaving. I had a no-alcohol beer and the cheese & onion pie which is always a winner. The log burner was lit, which was lovely. I'll be back when I'm allowed to leave Merseyside again!

Being from Blackpool we wanted a drive out, somewhere with a nice walk and a good pub lunch afterwards. We had lunch after a pleasant walk but I have to say that this was probably the worst meal me and my partner have ever been presented! For a start the portion was like a child's portion or like a school dinner. The burger was dry and tasteless and the brioche bun was stale. The cheese and onion pie was tasty but such a small slice and I felt like it was just microwaved as the cheese had melted, went hard and stuck to the plate, then the beans were poured over the pie. Not enough chips either on both meals! It's a real shame because it has such potential to be an amazing pub! Especially with the reservoir walk right next to it. Its just a local pub serving below average food I am afraid. If we return to do the walk again I would eat somewhere else or the Royal Arms which is at the end of the walk through the woods!

The pub car park is handy for the start of the walk, we nipped in for a swift half of real ale (plus tea-teacake for the driver) before setting off. The bar staff were happy for us to leave our car in the car park as we were returning later for our evening meal. In these days of formulaic pub food almost never created on the premises, the menu is a breath of fresh air. Today the cheese and onion pie was as good as always, a slice of truly homemade pie, rich with the two ingredients and not bulked out by potato. Of the German dishes I can never resist the Bratkartoffel mit Spiegeleier - fried potatoes with bacon, two fried eggs and a salad garnish of lettuce, tomato and balsamic that is just right. Truly special, however, was my husband's slow-cooked ham hock with fragrant sauerkraut, German dumplings and a gravy to die for.

The Hare & Hounds was on our route home and we were hungry so stopped as it was the first pub we came to. It has the look of a small country pub from the outside with a small car park and a small outside area. Inside its deceptively big with a bar central when you walk in.A nice atmosphere with a few eating already so we sat and perused the menu. I can only presume the chef/manager is German given the main menu having a German section to choose from (and a car outside with German plates on) Intrigued by this my father and husband both ordered from there and I stuck to a pub classic of Cheese and onion pie. The wait was very reasonable, with the young lady doing the bar, waiting on and taking orders. My father and I asked for tea for two and my husband, a coffee. When the tea arrived it was in a pot but with only one teabag so we couldn't manage to get any flavour. The milk that was served with both was not fresh either, we think, UHT, which adds a slightly musty flavour anyway. When our food arrived the schnitzel looked good but was tough and dry. My husband had a pork steak in cream and pepper sauce, which he liked but again the meat was quite tough. My cheese and onion pie was really good! Phew! However, when the menu suggests it comes with veg you don't expect to be presented with baked beans! All in all, we were fed and watered but would not go back! Shame really!

Was such a pleasant surprise to see a menu which was different from the norm, we all chose from the German section and no one was disappointed the food was very good, the service was great and the land lady very friendly and our dogs were welcome. We will be back to sample more German delights. Oh almost forgot..... Blue Moon on draught, so a massive thumbs up!

We called for a late lunch after a lovely walk around the adjacent reservoirs, and regret it. At 1.30pm, we sat at a small round table at the bottom of a stairwell, 'privatised' by a door, and so dark you found it hard to read the menu. The width of the table resulted in me not being able to put both knees under it. The table was so small, it could not handle the sauces, and our meals, so some items had to be stored on a shelf. The premises are child and dog friendly, but the children treated the pub as a playground, and we were next to a dog that showed intolerance to them in constant barking. Our three dogs were in the car outside. The interior is simply dirty, the carpet where we were seated needed a damn good clean. We ordered, and it took an age to arrive, but we did notice the kitchen staff 'mingling' with the masses, with a kitchen towel, hanging from a trouser pocket; food hygiene? I had the chicken platter, it was dire! All the chicken 'bits' were cremated, the HUGE onion rings looked fab but the batter was undercooked, the garlic bread was as dry as a bone, but a few of the chips were OK. My Wife had the cheese pie, but like me left most of it! I really wouldn't recommend this place to someone I don't like - terrible!

Popped in for lunch and found a nice relaxed, dog friendly pub with an unusual (for Lancashire) German menu, as well as English. The fried potato with bacon and eggs was tasty, filling and good value, my wife enjoyed the pork fillet.

Called in for lunch after a lovely walk around the reservoirs on a very hot day. We decided to sit outside to enjoy the sun and because it was hot, the staff obliged with umbrellas for the more elderly in the group. The cold drinks were more than welcome. For lunch, I decided on a ham sandwich with salad. The ham was delicious (and very popular I'm told) with a flavoursome salad dressing. The only downside for me was the rather LARGE slice of bread (a big wedge - good for big appetites). Having said that, it was a very enjoyable lunch with friendly, attentive staff.

My 2 sons and myself landed her one Tuesday evening about 7.30,there were about 5 people in siting around the bar, obviously regulars,my son ordered 1 beer 1 coke and a lime and soda-£7.70-v,pricey I thought.then when we asked if we could order food ,we were told that food not served Tues after 7.30[it was JUST after]So we drank half the freezing cold drinks [painful!], rang another place and booked for ten mins hence, had to leave our dear drinks and we were not impressed with the indifference,we have been here on many occasions before the recent refurb and the atmosphere felt much more relaxed and friendly. We haven't chanced it again in case we fall foul of the strict kitchen closure rules.

Our walking group planned to meet at the Hare & Hounds, park our cars, do the walk and eat at the pub afterwards. We spoke to the owners a few weeks before and asked for permission to park and they offered us a menu so that we could choose our meals. I phoned our orders in a couple of days before and gave them a rough ETA. It all went to plan, the 15 of us had an area set out for us in the pub. The food came not long after we'd had a drink and everyone was well satisfied with their choices. We were pleased that the dog which comes on our walk was also made to feel welcome. A very enjoyable visit all round.

After many landlords it seems finally we have one that is committed to providing good quality Fayre. I ordered some onion rings expecting some wholesale frozen mess but was presented with some fresh home made ones that not only looked amazing tasted divine. You would think that the cheese onion pie would be sub standard considering however it was cooked perfectly. Pastry was crumbly and the filling was tasty and full of flavour. They even have a dog menu!

Tried some of the German fayre on offer at the Hare & hounds and its excellent pub grub. Schnitzels, currywurst etc. And best of all they are dog friendly and there are some nice walks right on the doorstep.

Having driven past this pub literally thousands of times during my life I finally wandered in on good Friday with Mrs and dog, greeted by a lovely clean pub, with a few other dogs and arguably one of the finest ales ever in Copper Dragons Golden Pippin. Ordered food, took a little while, but I guess they are making it fresh. All excellent! Even sell dog treats behind the bar, but not just supermarket rubbish, really great doggie snacks. Other clientele really nice too, only regret now is not having the real German food, will be back...........brilliant thanks.

Visited the hare and hounds this evening for a meal. The food was amazing, the service was out of this world, the landlord couldn't do enough to accommodate us. Four cask ales to choose from. Something for everyone here, from walkers with dogs to couples having a quiet meal. All are felt welcome, even sell dog treeats and food. Great food, great atmosphere would definitely come again.

To find a restaurant in England serving German cuisine is rare, to find a restaurant serving excellent German cuisine is like pulling hen's teeth. If you are a walker who likes the best of Lancashire scenery and an old english pub - then you have found it. Silke, Mark and Katrine will make you welcome and satisfy you whether it is English or German food that you seek. Be it traditonal real ale of a proper German Bier 'vom Fass', you won't be disappaointed! For the adventurous, there is even a supply of German spirits behind the bar. As a regular visitor to Germany, it was great to hear that Silke trained in one of my favourite restaurants - the Sonnenalp in Bad Wildebad in the Black Forest.Have been going to the pub for nigh on 8 months and never tire of it - it is always worth keeping an eye on the blackboard to see what specials Silke has sneaked on. As the title says, I find it wonderful and am in second heaven when I visit.

I came for the German food and it didn't disappoint. After living in Germany for 2 years I am often disappointed with German food in England but here it was completely authentic. I had the schnitzel, which was cooked just right and tasted fantastic with the bratkartoffel and home made Jägersoße. The service was friendly and the atmosphere was good. I'd love to see some more things pop up on the menu though, maybe Frikadellen or Leberkäse.

Visited after a Walk with the Family and our Dogs. Great Pub for Dog Walkers! Lovely atmosphere. We ordered the Lamb Hot Pot with Bread, Pickles and Red Cabbage from the Specials for 6.95 - Bargain! It was lovely. We had the German Schnitzel with Bratkatoffel and the Currywurst. So much better then the Xmas Markets! The Staff was very friendly checked up on us asked if we wanted more drinks or if everything was fine. It certainly was! I would recommend this Pub to everyone. Will return

We, as a group of dog walkers, came after a local walk. There were 12 of us plus a few dogs. One of the group thought they had booked but was booked at the wrong pub. We said it wasn't a problem we would go elsewhere but the gentleman whom seemed to be in charge said he could accommodate, after a large group had left. Someone who wasn't in our group, apparently moaned about the slow clearing up time. This was not any of our group. However there was a foreign accented lady that should apparently have been cooking in the back who was awfully rude to myself as I waited patiently at the side. I did explain to her that the moaning lady was not in our group but she carried on being very abrupt and rude. Tables were eventually cleared and we ordered drinks and food. These were not cheap. There were some unusual beers and the food list was also rather different, mainly German and listed alsorts of unusual allergies. A glass of wine, pint of soft drink, gammon and chips and a potato and bacon and fried eggs dish came to just on £20. Drinks were ok but food was very small portion, very slow coming out and not the best at all. When I asked where our food was, I was just told it will be coming with a roll of eyes!!! Ladies toilets were a mess also. Real shame as setting was lovely and they let the dogs in. It seemed other groups/tables had happy, friendly service, just we didn't. This seemed based on someone else moaning; someone not in our group. In future I think staff need to be more aware of the positive comments a group makes as a whole and not tar one group with a moaning couple who were nothing to do with us.Still the pub's loss as we go out walking regularly so meet in pubs after but will not be visiting the Hare and Hounds in Abbey Village again.

Visited for lunch with a walking group having been before previously. First occasion I had the Weiner Schitnell which I thought was ok but hardly filling at £7.95. Second occasion I had the same but it was only available with chips. It was very dry this time and quite tough. Not something I would want to try again. To drink I had a pint of lime and soda....which at £2.20 I thought was extortionate. Most of our group were unimpressed with their choices and I believe we will not be returning.

Heard about German dining on Radio Lancs with Sally. The food was delicious and definately home made. Very busy at lunch time, so no actual greeting, but staff friendly. Only a couple of things, decor needs a lick of paint and upholstery outdated and worn. Had a good old fashioned atmosphere of and English pub, but these days I think surroundings are as important as the good food. Will return though.

Nice pub with friendly staff situated in Abbey Village. My boyfriend and I both went for dishes from the German side of the menu and both were delicious. It is very reasonable for the food and the portions are generous. My only negative comment would be that is was a little cold inside the pub the day we visited- thankfully the grub warmed us up though :)

It is not often that you find a good British pub these days, let alone one that does genuine German food and beer 'vom Vass'! If you have not been then you are missing out. Friendly staff and locals - and good conversation either in English or German. The landlady cooks everything from fresh which means that you may have to wait (especially if the pub is busy), but the wait is worth while. The menu does have items in German on it but the staff are happy to explain what they are if you bother to ask and you will be surprised just how delicious German cuisine can be - and they are German sized portions. For those who are a little more staid (I could call them xenophobes), there are equally as good English dishes and snacks on the menu - but there loss is our gain!As the pub is run by a German couple and their daughter, you can rely on the knowledge that they know how to properly look after their beers - and as much care is put in to the mantining of the English beers as they do with the Warsteiner and Loewenbraeu. My personal opinion is that the draft Warsteiner is the better beer - but then these days you can get Loewenbraeu almost anywhere (including supermarkets), be it in a bottle.A little piece of Germany in the heart of Lancashire - long may it last!
