Harbour Fish Bar in Thanet

This place does not practice safe hygiene. I watch one of two guys in there literally thumb a bogie out of his nostril while cash handling, and then proceed to handle food, removing two pieces of incredibly overcooked looking fish with his bare hands. I challenged this behaviour and was laughed at and told to go away. A woman behind the counter started insisting I ‘Go, go, go’ whilst pointing to the door. Visit a chippy that deserves your business. Not this one.

Took a chance on a random chippy and glad we did. Charming owner. It wasn’t “instant”, which is a good thing as the fish was cooked fresh to order. It was delicious. Lovely location too. You can stuff your face on a bench over the road enjoying the views of the beautiful harbour. If I’m in the area again, I’ll be back!

Freshly cooked and crunchy chips, dog friendly. A little wait is worth it for fresh. Boxed take away. Views across the sea/harbour.

They have a sit down section, along with take-away. The take-away section is only very small, and barely fits more than a few people though. Best to order and wait outside. The male owner was friendly with me, but a little short with others. The chips and scampi was cooked well and not overly greasy. Freshly cooked, so not the quickest, but worth the wait.

Their fish and chips saved our day. We went to Ramsgate for a day and got hungry. We ordered take away from this restaurant and it was the beeeest fish and chips i’ve ever had in my 23 years in UK! It was fresh and the owner were super friendly!

Top quality and service. Ordered Haddock chips and mushy peas. Great guy with a brilliant sense of humour serving up what I can only describe as the best fish and chips iv ate in a long time.

Queued for about 20 minutes before I was spoken to, even though there was only 1 person in there when I entered. Didn't listen to my entire order just 2 items then walked off. I waited another 15 minutes for 2 chicken burgers and only then could I ask for the rest of my order. Another 15 minutes passed of constantly reminding him of what I had ordered. The whole time he was trying to make jokes and handing out small samples of chips for the kids who were understandably hungry and bored of waiting for so long. Finally got our order, nearly an hour after walking in, 2 battered sausages, were raw, they were bright pink in the middle! Chips were awful, they were overcooked and soggy. Only wanted some food before watching the carnival and it was £25 down the drain as we were all still hungry after.

Ozy and his wife were very attentive and friendly. The fish was cooked fresh and the chips were lovely too. Ozy even looked after our small Bichon Frise by giving her some sausage and a tray of water. I highly recommend a visit to this lovely place.

I must of had a brain storm to suggest this fish and chip shop. 4 of us went for lunch. My friend ordered scampi and chips, when they arrived the scampi was charcoal in colour, we complained the scampi was over cooked and not exceptable. The man poked his finger in the scampi pulled it open, fingered it and said there was nothing wrong with it. He proceeded to offer it to us. We declined as we were in shock at such behaviour. He ranted at us that he had changed the oil. He may have changed the oil but the fryers had not been cleaned. The chips were an odd colour and the fish was oily. One of the group asked for a glass to pour her drink into, it was greasy and fingerprints all over it. Why I even paid the bill, when we didn’t eat most of it, was I was embarrassed that I had put my friends through such an experience. Do not eat here as it’s a health hazard and the owner knows nothing about hygiene.

So we ordered food on Sunday and I ended up in A&E because I had a fish bone in my tonsil, they don’t have an warnings about fish bones, we even emailed them etc and they didn’t get back to us! All I wanted was for them to add a warning for other customers because it was a horrible experience

Had a large chips as cannot eat fish. Was absolutely amazing. Having chips down by the beach is a special thing. Only made better when they are too quality. Thank you!

1st and last time of ordering from here, a luke warm and late delivery. Overly greasy saturated paper wrapped cod which made it hard to separate from the fish, the kebab meat tasted as if it had been left for quite making it only fit for the bin. Ordered via just eat tonight and there was no real way of properly sharing how bad this place is and people should be aware to avoid

We stopped off here for an evening meal. The fisha nd chips were very nice but the portions were massive and I felt bad leaving half the chips!!!

Ordered from Just Eat, never again, took over an hour, when it finally arrived it was undercooked, cold and tasteless, a total waste of money, complained and then had a visit from fish bar who claimed the food is perfect, very arrogant, combative and rude. The food was disgusting. Dont waste your money, go elsewhere.

Visited Ramsgate for my daughters homework project regarding the Harbour. Decided to stop here for fish and chips. I have never ever been somewhere so dirty in all my life, genuinely. I refused to eat. The Manager had left and the guy in charge did not speak a word of English, although he really did try and it was irresponsible for the Man who owns the shop to leave this man to deal with all of his mess. Before taking a look around we ordered food. I see slimy fish brought from out the back with bare hands and into the shop... I said NO we won’t be eating thank you anyway! The ketchup bottle was black with dirt... my husband showed the man before we left, he got a tissue and wiped the table, it was pure black dirt... the man apologised but not sure he really understood. The window is smashed, not sure if that is a new thing, my god. Health inspector has not been here for years! Unbelievable poor hygiene. I understand that it is hard to please some people on here and some do moan about the slightest of things, but genuinely, a workmans cafe at a truck stop is pristine compared to this place. We were shocked.

Visiting from Yorkshire and friends took us to Ramsgate. Tradition is for us to have fish and chips on the Sunday. Usually these are poor compared to what we get in Yorkshire but this was not the case on this occasion. We avoided the chippy opposite Wetherspoons as they didn't look that good and were pricy. Just a short distance to this chippy and the fish and chips was £1.20 cheaper and portions much larger. Cooked to order so very fresh. Super chunky fish and a good portion of chips. Would recommend.

I have just come back from a meal at the Harbour Fish Bar. The tables were absolutely filthy. When my knife and fork were delivered, I had to clean them. I had kebab meat and chips. Both were very obviously recooked. The chips were absolutely terrible. When I mentioned this, I was told that the meat was freshly cut. I do not believe this. This has to be the worst meal I have been served in Thanet. I shall never go there again and would recommend that people take my honest review and do the same. AVOID. Just one star. This is because you can not give zero.

A lovely large portion of fish and chips served with no finesse. Coke served from the bottle no offer of a glass. Smiles did not happen from staff.

Absolutely disgusting service. We ordered from Just Eat and on their menu under Fish AND CHIPS any normal person would assume the fish comes with the chips and there is a seperate drop down for chips under the Fish and Chips drop down menu.We had a phone call from Harbour Fish bar asking if we'd like chips with the fish, and if so its extra charge. We ordered online and on card so how would we get the extra money to them? - We explained the menu is misleading and we'll accept the order as it is but the drop down menu needs to be changed due to misleading. Just Eat then phoned us to see if we still wanted our order, we said yes.. Another phone call from Just Eat after and apparently Harbour Fish Bar wanted to cancel the order altogether. So we cancelled and waiting for refund, but this service is disgraceful. Never ordering again.

First visit to this outlet and all is good. Friendly staff and my cod & chips were cooked from scratch. You know that if you have to wait for your meal to be cooked, you're getting something that is fresh, that was the case here. The fish, the batter and the chips were spot on and very good value too. Recommended.

Well over an hour for delivery . Luke warm pies and chips .Battered sausage that was pink in the middle .stale buttered rolls and the large chips was barely enough for a child . Will not use again and definitely will not recommend

Ordered food for my lunch break at work for 12, at half 12 I was getting aggy as to why it hadn't arrived prior to 3 calls telling me it was around the corner. On the last attempt to phone we was told that he had just cooked it and was on his way be 15 mins (proving he lied to us 3 times previous) and said he would give us a refund due to the inconvenience. Once the food was delivered we was told we were only getting half our money back as he has cooked it fresh (if that was fresh I'm worried) not to mention the man starting to raise his voice and came across agressiveso I got over that and went to go and eat then to find that my messed my order up anyways. I would not recommend this place to anyone after the service I recived today I am truly horrified this place is still open

Often use Harbour Street Fish Bar, has good portions and is tasty. Kebabs of good size and cooked fresh. Good delivery service as well. Would recommend.

Das englische Nationalgericht Fish & Chips muss bei einem Englandbesuch natürlich dazu gehören. Diesmal fiel unsere Wahl auf Ozy's Harbour Fish Bar. Mit dem Fisch waren wir sehr zufrieden: Frischer Fisch, frisch paniert und dann zubereitet (10 Minuten Wartezeit). Die Pannade hat sehr gut geschmeckt, die Pommes hingegen etwas weniger. Letztere waren nicht schlecht, schmeckten aber nicht jedem.

I visited this restaurant on a visit, and really enjoyed a well-cooked plaice and chips. Very quiet but that was probably the time of year.

i went in and bought a cod and chips. This costed me £6 i don't know if they lowered the price but it was so expensive

We visited Ramsgate on a sunny Bank Holiday weekend and due to some organised entertainment events being held in the harbour area, the sea front was quite busy. We travelled to Ramsgate by train and it is a fair walk (mostly downhill), from the station to seafront. There are a good number of (pay and display), car parks in the immediate area if you are driving and there seems to be a good public bus service running along the front, though potential visitors may wish to investigate this.Being at the seaside we thought a portion of fish and chips would be nice to eat by the harbour. We had noticed the 'Harbour Fish Bar' earlier on during the day a short walk from the harbour and decided to give it a go. The shop is a traditional fish and chip shop with a sit down restaurant area and to one side, a separate take away area. Though we did not use the restaurant, it looked to be reasonably clean and bright inside.The takeaway area was quite busy no doubt partly due to the number of visitors in the area at the time, the two people serving seemed to be in control of the orders and willing to pass the time of day with their customers. We both had a portion of fish and chips combined with a canned drink in a reasonably priced all-inclusive deal, and took them down to the harbour to eat them. The meal was very good, the food was hot, the chips were tasty and well-cooked as was the fish, and the portion size would satisfy most appetites (including the resident seagulls keeping a beady eye open for scraps)!We thought that the Harbour Fish Bar was a good traditional seaside fish and chip shop and we would not hesitate to make a return visit if we were in the area again.

We were late leaving an arts event so thought a quick fish and chips before returning home would be an easy option, as we had our young son with us. Restaurant was okay, although seemed a bit odd that it was empty on a Saturday night at 8, but then we don't know Ramsgate, so maybe it is quiet in October, right? Not so!!!! The food took quite a while to come, but I was optimistic that chips were being cooked fresh and it would all be great, however when the food came, apart from the chips, which were great, everything else was pretty vile! My son and I had saveloy, and they had obviously been under a hot plate for hours (I really mean hours, I am not exaggerating) as they were dark brown, not red, and so hard we had to slice them open and pick out the middle. I think we got about a third of a saveloy out of them in meat. It tasted like cardboard as it was so overcooked. I didn't complain as we were trying to rush as we had a long drive home and my son was tired and hungry, and I could see it might upset him. Wish I had. My husband had fish and he left some. I asked him what it was like and he said the fish was fresh, but badly cooked in very greasy batter, which made the whole thing difficult to eat. My husband has a big appetite and usually eats everything. We used the toilet, which was not particularly clean, which I would have accepted if they were super busy, but the restaurant had no one except us in it, and only one takeaway customer came in for a portion of chips in the time we were there, so they would have had time to clean surely? Also there were tables with cans and crumbs on them, and chips on the floor, and these could have been cleaned up while we were there. There is no excuse for laziness in the restaurant trade. We won't be returning. This place has a prime spot on the harbour and could do so much more if they put effort into it.

Family run and family atmosphere. Good traditional fish and chips served as you would expect. Ideal for hungry families after a day on the beach.

Excellent business lunch 'worked wonders' will definitely be stopping by again and try some other dishes... Plaice n chips with mushy peas

Ate here on Wednesday, very warm welcome by all staff food was good nice crispy batter and proper tasting chips. I am not a big eater so asked for a child's portion and they were happy to oblige where a lot of places won't let you of you are under 12. My husband had cod and chips which was very nice, just how fish and chips should be, both had mug of tea. Good value for money.Certainly a lot nicer fish and chips than peters on the front. Not quite sure how they get quality awards . Will definitely return to this fish bar

Popped in here for fish and chips as we were at the seaside. Everywhere else was overpriced and very busy. It is quite tight inside but clean, some of the décor is a bit unusual, spot the Childs cot that is now the door between the restaurant and counter. The area behind the counter is very small but food comes out hot, cooked and well presented. Reasonably priced, but quite basic. There is a small toilet but we did not venture in there. If we were in Ramsgate again we would not hesitate to go back.

Easily the worse place to eat in ramsgate, horrible smell inside,looks very dirty, as quick as we sat down got up again and left

The service here was friendly and the food was good. My husband and I had a take away on our first visit and sat in on our second visit. The restaurant was clean and tidy and in a good location just across the road from the harbour.

Not many fish and chip shops open on New Year's Day - but a lovely welcome and lots of good natured banter here from the owner. Don't believe his '3 or 4 mins' timings though - as he admits, it's 'a Turkish 4 minutes'! Lovely 'meaty' cod and chips although i personally prefer a bit of an airier batter. But still very tasty - and he put a complimentary sausage in for my little freezing dog who waited so patiently outside in the cold. Service with a smile.

I only had their chips (only a medium portion but there was LOADS) to take way...such lovely crisp chips I went back the next day...just because I could.Friendly staff too.

Went to this place last year when we were on holiday, had delicious fish and chips, so went again last week. Brilliant meal again and very friendly and quick service. We were made to feel very welcome, waiter/owner was joking with everyone - what a lovely change it made

Family trip to the seaside cannot be done without fish & chips. We popped in here , service was quick and friendly, food was a good price and was yummy. Next time I'm in Ramsgate I will be back.

Stopped into this restaurant on our way back from Margate the food tastes and looks great. The service was brilliant everyone had smiles all the time and were willing to have a laugh and joke with myself and my family

Have ordered from here a few times, each time we have been impressed. Rock is always a huge portion and lots of chips, often struggle to finish it all.

A group of friends and I were visiting Ramsgate for the first time and were searching for some decent fish and chips after having a tour of the amazing ramsgate tunnels. We found this place situated right opposite the royal harbour and we were pleasantly surprised. I went for a traditional cod and chips and this place exceeded my expectations, the food was cooked freshly in front of me and tasted fresh. I spoke to the friendly owner 'Ozy' who seemed to be a well known and liked local character and his wife Paula. Ozy explained that he has recently taken back management of the place and refurbished it. Overall it was a pleasant visit and we will definitely come back if we're in the area again.

Use this Fish Bar many times during our short stay in Ramsgate. The fish is fantastic and very good value for money.

Did not like it !! We have lived on the Isle of Thanet for over 6 years now and have loved every minute. The residents are friendly and have time for you.When I entered 2 ladies had just sat down, there was one other customer. The ladies placed there order and then said "cancel that order" and left. I didn't hear their conversation so I can't say why. I ordered the Pukka steak pie and a diet coke. The "waiter" finished putting away some bottles and then brought a can over unopened. I had to ask for a glass the lady brought this over it had water stains on it.My meal arrived I opened the top of the plastic bottle of tomato sauce was about to squeeze but it just poured out like liquid. I do not know what they add to make it go further? It was Heinz but not as we know it. The top of the sauce bottle had dried sauce on it.Not sure how long the pie had been warming but there was little gravy, the chips looked very sad. NEVER AGAIN.

There is a lot of competition for fish & chips places in ramsgate & any seafront however I would have to say that harbour fish bar was quite disappointing the particular member if staff that served us wasn't very welcome & didn't even offer us drinks so had to go up separtly If you like a good traditional fish & chips go to peter's factory near the seafront ( on the corner just before the main amusements ) you won't be disappointed

i had a fish and chips with my husband typicall fish bar its very clean gentilmen who served us very reliable, our meal tastey tastey tastey u can tell their oil clean. will go there next year again

Worst fish n chips ever eaten cold batter was a vile taste. Service was discracefull slammed my food dwn took ages to serve me as busy talking and choose to ingore me

I am just reading the great reviews of the Fish & Chips at this place. I was there at the height of summer and chose to eat here because of its location which is fantastic sitting a it does on the arm of the old harbour with tables overlooking the beach. Unfortunately this is about the only good thing to be said of the place, as the Fish and chips were not good at all. I chose not to eat here again despite being in Ramsgate for a week - that says it all. Frankly the fish & chip meals in the UK only improved in quality and price the further north I travelled with Scotland being the best.

Best Fish & Chips in Ramsgate. Admittedly the Staff don't seem that happy but that is because it is always busy and they are trying to keep up with demand! No complaints, would recommend, even left a small tip.

Not the best, definitely not the worst,, but it's local and the portions are quite good.The guy who runs it always seems to be smiling, so you fell happy when you eat there.

I see the other positive reviews and think maybe they had a really bad day when I was there? Tables were sticky and not cleaned, our drinks order took forever and my hot tea was served in a heavily chipped mug with thick milk stains from previous tea/coffee served in it. The fish was disgusting and smelled off. It had been cooked way too long in the batter (maybe to hide the off fish?) which meant it was oily, heavy and crusty. The batter mixture itself was also very bad and in the end I refused to pay full price for our terrible food. I had to scrape away the fish bits from the batter (see picture) to eat it, which I regret because my husband and I spent the rest of the afternoon in the bathroom sick! I admit the chips here are really great - thick cut and tasty, just avoid the fish at all cost.

Stopped off here for some tasty fish and chips as I was starving and the smell of fresh fish and chips lured me in.I have to say I was pleasantly surprised with every aspect from the food, the atmosphere to the service. Ordered a large cod and chips and it was absolutely fantastic, really fresh and batter not greasy or too thick! Definitely one of the best I've had in a long time! I will definitely be coming back for more!!

I'm always in here when I visit Ramsgate. The service is fast, till staff always smiling and the owner called Ozy is a funny bloke, very friendly and approachable. The fish the chips the burgers pretty much everything is bloody scrummy! I know if I have a spare fiver and my bellies rumbling I always pop into this place. I think this is the only fish and chip shop in the town (bar kebab shops) that stay open after midnight so its always great that I can have fun with my friends in the pubs and clubs and go have something to eat. Peter's fish factory could learn a lot from this place!

Fish and chips in the harbour. A good location close to many other bars and eateries. The food is ok, not the best for me and unfortunately I've always wondered why the staff are so grumpy whenever I've been there

Nothing quite like the smell of fish an chips. We usually buy them and take over to the beach. Several types of combinations to buy, or you can just have s bag of chips. Turnover is busy so the chips are generally freshly cooked! It's a minute walk from harbour,shops and beach.

This fish bar is right by the harbour ,so you can eat your food on a nice day looking at the boats.But be warned do not feed the herring gulls as they will dive bomb you for ever more, saying all that the food there is lovely and fresh and the chips aren't bad either.

After spending the previous day Christmas shopping in Calais, we decided to visit somewhere in Ramsgate for lunch. Having read the reviews on here and not being in the mood for a "full" meal, we decided to give the Harbour Fish Bar a go.From the outside, it doesn't look anything special - an average Fish & Chip shop in most respects. However it's worth looking beyond that for the quality of the food served. The fish was absolutely fantastic, and the batter it was cooked in was the best I have ever tasted. Not overly thick or greasy and gave an excellent taste to the fish.Not exceptionally cheap but still good value for money. Would recommend!

We enquired about the samphire on the menu - we know about samphire because we pick it on the North Norfolk coast. We were brought a sample of the samphire available at this time of year and it was similar to our samphire but in our opinion not so good! We were impressed the staff took the trouble to give us the sample.

We eat here every time we visit Ramsgate and the food and service is great. As mentioned before the owner is a very cheerful chap and always remembers our faces when we return. Highly recommended ... especially after a beer or 2!

I remember first trying this place out back in 2008 and instantly loved it! their burger and chips are so yummy! their fish is to die for as well and you get a choice of great toppings and sauces. On that one good experience on a rainy day 3 years ago I have since been visiting this place at least once a week when I'm in Ramsgate, I have recommended it to many friends who now also eat there instead of Peter's Fish Factory. The owner I think is Turkish or something? he is a friendly person and I'm now on first name basis with him, him and his staff instantly know what I want to eat. If you have never tried this place you really are missing out! they work their socks off to provide such lovely food plus they are the only chippy open past 2am which is handy after I have come from the clubs and am starving hungry, I can always guarantee I'll go away with a full stomach after eating there. Plus is really cheap!.Overall this place I would say is the best chip shop in Ramsgate, I am meeting a lovely lady soon in the town ad have recommended this place as she loved the food in there the last time she came down so this place has some fans from London! keep up the good work!

We had planned to eat at the famous Eddie Gilberts, but they don't stay open all day and so at 3.30pm we found the Harbour Fish and Chip shop. It didn't look great, definitely in need of some redecoration, but I really fancied Haddock; it was on the menu here, so we went in. We were made welcome by the staff, and ordered haddock, chips and peas, bread and butter, pickled onions and tea. A big mug of tea, piping hot, arrived immediately along with the well-buttered fresh bread (although it was sliced). When the haddock arrived I couldn't believe it! The batter was amazing - paper thin, but incredibly flavourful and non-greasy, and it stayed crisp throughout the meal even though I added vinegar. I have never tasted anything quite like it and could almost have ordered all over again just for the batter! Chatting to the owner as we were leaving, I mentioned how wonderful the batter was (sorry to go on, but I can't praise it highly enough) and he told me it's his secret recipe - even his sons don't know it! I told him to make sure he passes it on 'just in case'. If I go back to Ramsgate, I'll definitely visit again. If they had the money to franchise this out, they'd put Harry Ramsden's out of business for sure!
