Having gone to school in Newquay (many years ago !) I have seen many changes, some good, some less so. I don't visit that often, but today was one of those glorious sunny september days when you want to see some of the best sea views in Cornwall, and Newquay certainly provides them. After a walk, we wanted to stop for lunch. Whilst there is nothing wrong with a pasty or fish and chips, and there are pubs with gardens and reasonable food, we wanted something a little more special. We were planning to go back to the car and drive to a couple of other places we know that are reliable for good food and sea views (it seems unfair to mention them) when we happened upon the The Harbour Hotel. It has been there for years, opposite the notorious Red Lion, but I didn't know it had undergone such a serious upgrade. They were still serving lunch until 3pm. This was a real bonus, as many places stop at 2pm. There were plenty of tables inside, fewer on the Terrace, but we managed to find one. Now, this Restaurant cannot claim credit for the weather but it can claim some credit for the views, because someone has been prepared to invest serious money into preserving this real piece of Old Newquay. The food was excellent, and the service prompt and friendly. The challenge for this restaurant is to keep up it's standards during the lean winter months without pricing out the locals. However, after this visit I would recommend it to all my friends and family.

- Non-existent customer service - Inexperienced staff - Basics missing from the table - High prices for poor quality food I wouldn’t be writing this bad review, if the staff had shown common sense, assertiveness & initiative.. They could have diffused our complaint by a simple offer of complimentary deserts or coffees ... but there seemed to be no one who knew what they were doing… I’ve received better customer service, value for money & attention to detail, from our local fish & chip shop

Smallest most expensive take away coffee I’ve ever had! Wish I’d checked prices before ordering. The size of the cup was like an egg cup!

It was a shame they got our order wrong. Ordered 1 gluten free fish & chips and 3 normal but they brought out 4 gluten free fish & chips. Instead of apologising and getting it right they lied and said that's how it is. It was quite clear from every other person who had ordered fish and chips in the restaurant that it is not gluten free and had been cooked especially. Really poor customer service. Final straw was when we asked for some ketchup for four people and was brought out 1 measly cup for four people to share, when we asked for more this was met with a rubbish attitude and proceeded to bring them out one by one and i could clearly see them complaining the whole time. Cheapest ketchup possible too, tastes like was from a grizzly kebab shop. Very poor for how expensive it all was. Still 2 stars. All other fish and chips brought out were gold brown. The gluten free ones were pale and tasteless.

Wir haben dort ein wirklich sehr schmackhaftes Essen genossen. Ich habe Muscheln gegessen, die extrem frisch waren. Was aber bei einem Hafenrestaurant nicht überrascht. Das Personal ist super freundlich aber völlig unkoordiniert.

Unfortunately I have to give 1 star, however this restaurant needs to be avoided if you mean to book. I booked last night, arrived on time tonight and we were not on the daily list, so no table. They checked the booking sheet and found they’d made an error not transferring it to the daily sheet! Move with the times people get an electronic booking system !! Didn’t even get an apology! 😡

Dropped in for lunch delighted with it all. Silling looking over the harbour,great food and charming service. Eton mess puddingvand 2 spoons just a perfect finish.

Wow, fantastic meal. Nothing was too much trouble. Food was to die for, every meal was superb. My husband loved the mash potato. Presentation 10/10. Service was outstanding. Thank you so much.

Stunning spot and beautiful food. We visited after not visiting for 10 years and not much has changed which is lovely, The chefs do an amazing job but I think they were let down by the front of house maybe understaffed but food came before our drinks, food was delicious. Best crab risotto and tasty mussels. Good kids menu maybe slightly bigger portions would be better. The view is just beautiful

Spend an extra £5 on your fish and chips and enjoy delicious fish and chips with a view. We also had the mussels, tempura salmon and king prawns and the crab risotto. Everything was delicious! Highly recommended.

Amazing Place directly next to the sea! They got very good food its usually quite empty, and they have nice personel. Nice if you want to eat fish and chips!

Well this is overrated. Not enough food to make a forkful for my starter. The waiter looked at me as if he had faced this a million times when he delivered my starter. Main course was better but not great although it should’ve been for the money. Won’t be back and advised friends the same! I would take photos but you’d think I was joking!

the restaurant was so busy last night, yet staff was so accommodating! they were all so friendly, plus their fish and chips (gluten free) never changes! i eat here whenever i get the chance with my partner and it never fails to amaze me 🤍

The venue is lovely and clean with lovely food and outside dining. The food was lovely with great options for children. The staff overall were just so friendly, kind and welcoming. I have to say that out of everywhere we have been so far in Fistral, the staff here have been the best. Especially the guy with the Volcom socks. Thanks so much for making our family dining experience such a lovely experience 🙏

Stumbled across this place by accident and so glad we did. It’s tiny but it’s so worth it as the views whilst eating/dining are stunning! Food is very nicely presented but not massive portions for the price but you have to take into account the location. Waiter was very very polite and very professional. Keep up the good work

We went to The Barbour Fish and Grill Restaurant today for my parents' wedding anniversary. When we asked, two tables were immediately put together for us so that we could sit outside and look at the harbor. The service was very friendly, attentive and nice. The food tasted really delicious. The portions would be perfect. The location was very relaxed and quiet. We would love to come back on our next vacation.

Best experience in Cornwall. The food was not just food but a wonderful dining experience. We ordered a tasting menu and each item was unbelievably delicious. The service was excellent and the team was so welcoming. We had the pleasure of meeting the Chef who was an incredible host. In fact the entire team on the night was so down to earth and attentive to us and very knowledgeable about every single item they served. This is now our favourite place to eat in Cornwall for all future visits. What a place!

Superb......food, food choice and location all top notch. The food was fresh and full of flavour and well prepared and presented. 3 of our group chose food we had never eaten before, the waiter was excellent explaining the dishes and was happy to chat. The food came quickly and was delicious....will be back!

I had the smoked haddock and linguine,Wow 👌 Cool staff, and a nice view of harbour. I would recommend any seafood lover to try this one.

Over priced food and wine and a waiter who was extremely nice initially but when we complained about the wine being served in a recycled water bottle turned into Basil Faulty.

Was so happy to find such a wonderful restaurant on the dock front! The views from the balcony are picturesque. The owners are delightful to talk too and you can feel the passion from them. It honestly shows in there food, which was one of my favourite dishes of the holiday!

Disappointed. Based on very good previous visits this restaurant was top of my list to take my guests, oh dear what a let down. Mediocre food, very slow service, my Grandaughters food was forgotten, as a consequence we’d all finished our meals as hers arrived. To add insult to injury the price of 2 diet cokes was deducted to compensate for our poor experience. We did overhear other customers complaining with the waiter responding that the head chef was not in. As I said all round disappointing and embarrassing for me as my son in law paid the £130 bill. Not good enough guys.

Poor service and meals arriving at totally different times ( my daughters forgotten meal arrived after we had finished) - I know there was no head chef ( we learnt this 1/2 way through the meal ) meals ( 4 of us ) were very mediocre ( bill came to £133 ) menu was very average . Mother in law lives in Newquay but I will not be coming back here , I like paying for great food , but this is no longer a great place, feeling very underwhelmed - I guess this is a fallen chain restaurant 🥹

We appreciated being accommodated as a walk-in, without a booking. However, we had to wait 15 minutes to be served, after being seated only by catching attention of the staff... Fish and chips was average, not as good as expected for the establishment. The fish was heavily battered and stodgy. The only thing more battered than the fish was one member of staff, who quite clearly had been drinking...

Very nice location overlooking the harbor in front of Newquay. It's a great place to stop for a hike or a walk along the coast. The service is attentive and friendly. The delicious dishes offer a lot from a culinary point of view, as well as opportunities to get to know previously unknown ingredients. Lovely again. After two years I was actually here again and once again it was a great dinner with a wonderful view.

Beautiful views, the whole building has lovely character. The food is fantastic, amazing flavour combinations and always blows my mind. Look out for the special menus they really are amazing. However the normal sunday roast is one of the best in the town! The staff are very friendly and welcoming and almost make you feel like a guest in their home rather than a customer. Love everything about the harbour fish and grill. Highly recommended!

Even though we arrived without a booking they managed to find us a table during a normally quiet evening which turned out to be packed. With one chef and one front of house they turned out some incredible food from the full menu with spot on service. Clearly passionate of their craft I wholeheartedly recommend a visit and thank the team for the service tonight. Oh I nearly forgot, the people on the next table said they visited a nearish restaurant founded by some guy called Rick Stein last night but it wasn't as good as here! Give it a go, lovely restaurant overlooking the harbour.

Waited 10-15 mins for drinks ,and it was empty !! sea food chowder was mainly shells with little seafood, and mash potato , crab linguine was tasty but very little crab , very expensive bottle of Pinot Noir , do not recommend and will not be back , 3rd try and disappointing again the best thing is the view !! Brett came out and said the chef was sorry and would look after us next time but no discount off the bill and we won’t go back , shame cause it could be amazing.

Delicious food, wonderful view and setting, relaxed, easygoing vibe.

Enjoyed a fantastic roll of lamb for Sunday roast. Normally I am not a mac & cheese fan, but this one was out of this world (with horseradish). The meat was wonderful and the vegetables, al dente, and with a bit of butter. Great!! It was the right the decision to stop here for lunch and enjoy the view over the harbour….

This is such a little gem, with amazing views of the harbour and some amazing beaches. Had the mix tempura fish to start, good size starter, tasted amazing. Sole was the main, first time having it, beautiful bit of fish that was caught this morning. Me friend and i couldn’t help it, we ordered all 3 desserts and shared, all amazing! One of the best places in Newquay.

What a find! Aaron and Jay were so welcoming and friendly. We visited for my birthday and the food was sublime. I cook and often disappointed when eating out, but Aaron's cooking was exceptional. We will definitely be back and possibly even stay in one of his self catering apartments. Fab location and wonderful views both inside and outside. Sadly it was too cold to sit outside on this visit. I would highly recommend to all!!

Excellent food and nice service. We really appreciated having a chef knowing how to cook fish and sea food. Excellent desert as well. We strongly recommend the place. Only frustration, it was already night so we could not fully appreciate the view from the rstaurant

What I love about this place besides the food is the owner. Amon is a great chef and host. We've been here a few times and the quality never changes. If you love a good fish meal this is definitely a place to visit. Till the next time we're down.

Absolutely amazing yet again!! Incredible food - Aaron has such a passion for his craft - such a fantastic combination of flavours textures and innovation. With him giving some credit to his other Chefs!! . Coincidentally he is from our home town of Cheltenham - wish we had his talent there rather than having to come to Newquay to taste his menu!! What a treat ! In the words of Arnie - We will be back!

Nice fresh seafood. A bit pricey but usual Newquay prices. It was very quiet when we visited in November, but great location with amazing sea views.

The staff were so incredibly helpful and friendly. (parking got a bit fraught but the wonderful chef helped out - beyond the call of duty!) The food was absolutely delicious and great value for money. And the view is just fantastic! We’ll definitely be back!

Been here a few times now. It’s been exceptional every time. The view, the staff and the food is amazing, would highly recommend if you’re in Newquay.

I’m really sad to have to write this review as we have been coming here for years and it was always our favourite restaurant - last year we came three times in the week we were in Newquay. What on earth has happened? Dreadful experience. Starters awful and not worth the money. Main courses - sides never arrived until after main courses had been eaten. Steaks over cooked - one very over cooked was sent back and didn’t reappear till others had finished eating. Just awful awful service. Nobody cares anymore, ambience and friendliness has all gone. Over £230 for a mediocre meal, bad service and late arriving meals. So so sad, we will not return but will keep our momories of previous years. What on earth has happened to a once wonderful restaurant, how to destroy your reputation and years of goodwill in one step. Tragic.

You will not be disappointed if you chose to eat here, the fish cooked to perfection and the cream teas will not be beaten, the vue over the harbour is very nice ,the staff are very polite friendly and professional, i would recommend to call in and try....

Really enjoyed the meal and lovely view over the harbour. Service not very attentive had to call waitress over a couple of times and the look and ambiance therefore overall experience didn’t reflect the cost of the meal. 50/50 on returning.

Great location, great food , but don't order the Cornish tea trifle, if you don't like an arty farty dessert that made no sense whatsoever and didn't resemble anything to do with Cornwall, a pretentious load of nonsense with what I can only describe as flavoured rubber for the sponge part. Also we were advised not to sit on the balcony due to the flies on the glass windows, no doubt as a result of the restaurant overlooking a working fish harbour, a real shame really as the food was very nice, ( apart from the above) I'd also like to mention that there wasn't much of an atmosphere. Apparently this is/was a Michelin starred restaurant/hotel but there were only about 3 tables with people eating when we were there, obviously there were tables booked for different times but it all felt a bit flat really, won't be going again , and we are Newquay regulars!

We have been to this restaurant many times over the years and after our recent meal we wondered why we don’t go more often. The owner is a friend but also would respect an honest review. First and foremost the food was exceptional and definitely the best we have had in recent times. It’s not a place that piles food on a plate and so once you taste the food can you only understand that it’s quality and not quantity. Every course (3) was delicious, presented on the plate beautifully and something different from the norm. It’s not a cheap place to eat and nowhere is anymore but the food stood up to scrutiny. I’m doing a review in depth because I was blown away by the food. The restaurant could do with refurbishing and the staff were not up to the standard of the food. It’s very difficult to get staff that stay around and Brexit hasn’t helped. The front of house should and must reflect the kitchen, which it doesn’t at the moment BUT the food was so so good that it just made up for the front of house and surely it’s all about the food. So our review reflects the the food which was simply fantastic. Other aspects are sometimes very difficult to get right in a seaside town. We absolutely endorse the great food, which is definitely the best in Newquay.

We have ordered hot drinks which took about 30 minutes to bring in. However the cappuccino was hot and tasty. Beautiful views

We booked a seat at this establishment for dinner, the restaurant itself is in a beautiful location. However the three course meal we had was a disaster. I will only comment on my three course meal. My starter was a knickerbocker prawn cocktail, I’m sure loosely based around the popular prawn cocktail of the 1980s . The dressing was none existent, the shrimps in the salad were hardly visible apart from the two large prawns one the top for presentation the salad dismal and it had more mussels than anything else, and very sour. I ordered fish and chips, the fish was ok, batter not too great, the chips didn’t seem fresh and it had something called sardine ketchup on the plate, which was not palatable at all. I asked for tomato ketchup and tartar sauce, I couldn’t eat them, the condiments had no flavor and I suspect it’s because they were the fat free version. It was more than likely that the tartar sauce was not made in the establishment but bottle bought it was tasteless and flavorless as well. After that I had no appetite for a third course, my husband ordered something, which I can’t even recall what it was I tasted it, but between the two of us we could not finish it.

It's ok in terms of food, not a great range and pricey. It has a nice view of the sea.

We have been visiting the Harbour Fish and Grill for many years. We were disappointed this time. We arrived at the restaurant, sat down, and looked forward to our meal. The room seemed soulless, not atmosphere, a bit of background music might have helped. Now, this is a very fish/seafood based restaurant. One of my party does not eat sea food so asked the waitress if anything could be done about the steak dish which had scallops and lobster gravy (in the past they have gone into the kitchen to ask the chef and have always accomated us with an ammened dish). She said, "No, but you can't taste the lobster in the gravy" which wasn't the point, really. Also asked we could have some bread and olives to start, the waitress sarcastically replied 'it's artisan bread, is that ok, we don't have olives' we felt that she had a bit of an attitude. Three of us ordered fish and chips, and one ordered the lamb ragu. The food came out very quick, literally 5 minutes after the waitress took the order, thought that was odd. The fish came with a sardine ketchup, and a few pickles. None of us liked the sardine ketchup, it was a much better dish when the fish was served with tartar sauce and peas. My fish had several bones, which I find off putting. A good fish restaurant should know how to fillet a fish well. The ragu was ok, but it seemed like a lot of money for a pasta dish. The desserts haven't changed that much over the years. Quite sweet, they look fancy but don't deliver on taste. As for the drinks, bottles of wine start at £32 and the soft drinks come in very small bottles, so if you have thirsty kids, prepare to spend a lot. We felt the service was rushed, we were in there for less than an hour, when you are spending that much money on a meal you expect for it to be leisurely and not feel like you are being pushed out the door. Overall, we were very disappointed, like we were last year, it used to be our favourite restaurant, now we feel it's trying to be fancy for fancy sake. Go back to doing good, simple food, please.

It's a must visit restaurant when we are in Newquay.

Fabulous location with amazing food to match, having eaten here twice with different friends recently. The service can be a little quirky (flavoured lemonade to make a mojito when out of mint, scraping tables around towards end of night) but nothing that gets in the way of a great dinner. Highly recommend.

There is much made of the more well known fish restaurant’s in Cornwall but this beats them all for me. Beautiful food, great location and very happy friendly staff. Highly recommended we will defiantly be back in September.

What a shame - the restaurant is in a beautiful location but its like walking into Fawlty Towers. From the moment we got there the waiting staff have no idea what they are doing, we had to ask to see a menu, chase our drinks as they never arrived and finally after an hour we got our starter. The chef is obviously talented but is really let down by the in house staff. They weren't short staffed just didn't have a clue and when you are paying £70 per head you expect far better. We are use to paying big money living near London but it definitely wasn't worth it. When we left no one even acknowledged us, they were so busy talking around the till.

Overpriced and underwhelming. Frankly, disappointing. We were three generations two grandparents, two children and two grandchildren. A bowl of pasta for a 4 year old was £8.50 and basic fish and chips (the cheapest thing on the menu) was £21.50 As for the drinks, they charge £10.20 for a 175ml Viognier and £5 for a bottle of still water. No mention was made of tapwater. There might be some justification for those prices if the cooking or service were exceptional but both were average at best. eg. 2 ribbons of tough leek and 4 strands of samphire is a garnish, not vegetables for a main course. This was a great let down since our first visit some years ago and we can only conclude that the business has changed hands and the current owner is more concerned about maximising profits than providing value for money. If so, this might work in the short term but we shan't be going back.

Booked a table for 5 adults (family) as a special treat for the last night of our holiday. Had been before, so expectations were high. From the minute we arrived things were not good. I requested a table with a nice view when I booked & was assured we would have one. Instead we were taken into a side room and sat at the back on a table for 4 people, not 5. We were expected to put the 5th person at the end, therefore having no room for their food etc. We had to move another table over to provide enough space for all of us. We ordered 2 different bottles of white wine, and a glass of rum. One bottle of wine was fine ( chilled) the other was not cold, so we asked for a different bottle… waitress returned & it still wasn’t cold. We repeatedly asked for the glass of rum… it never came. Now for the food…. Out of 5 of us, only one person actually enjoyed their meal (fish & chips) two ordered cod loins, two ordered fillet steak. The cod arrived without the side orders. The steaks were not cooked as requested and to be perfectly honest, were pathetic… so small, my Husband had two mouthfuls and it was gone. My Daughter sent her meal ( steak) back as not cooked (rare) as she’d requested. She was so stressed by the whole experience, that she actually left the restaurant in tears & without eating anything at all! Our whole evening was a disaster from start to finish. The service was poor. The food was poor. Not what you expect from a ‘fine dining’ restaurant.

For quality it was very good. The cod was fresh and cooked perfectly. I really enjoyed it but overpriced at £31 for that dish, given the portion size.

Booked a table for two for a special occasion, deposit of £20 was taken and booked for 7:30. Specific table request was advised would be reserved. On arrival we waited 10 minutes for anyone to acknowledge our presence, we explained our reservation however no reservation was to be found. When we described who took the booking and confirmed the deposit was taken, we were informed that ‘oh that’s typical Pam that is’! The special table location that was requested was occupied. Pete the manager was called and said ‘oh well we will put you there’ after frantically searching through a diary for the booking. (No apology offered, neither did said booking jump out of the page even though he looked for a good five plus minutes with us stood there). We were treated like a totally inconvenience for turning up at the time we had booked and paid a deposit for. After waiting 20 minutes for our drinks to arrive and listening to Pete and his head waitress bicker about what the kitchen needed from the front of house, we finally placed our food order. Cod and fillet steak, at which point Pete disappeared from our table and was gone for about 5 minutes in the kitchen to discuss whether it was possible…on returning to our table I was advised; ‘yea we can do it but there is only one left’. (Frankly not our problem). When the food arrived my steak was not even a proper portion…I suspect the last portion had been sold and in-fact was cut in half to fulfil both orders. I’ve had premium steak in some of this country’s top restaurants and never seen such a small cut of fillet! I would have been embarrassed to serve it to a customer! We thought we’d continue as this place is a special place for us. I popped to the gents and while I was there my fiancée spoke to Pete about how disappointed we had been about the service thus far. To which he had basically looked at her like an inconvenience yet again and with no apology for the inadequate service. When my fiancée returned to the table, the table next to us informed her that they too were going to complain, and that they had to cancel their drinks as it had taken so long to be served. We were then seemingly ignored for another good 20 minutes whilst our empty plates were in front of us with a waitress walking past us at least twice to return to the kitchen. Having agreed between us that we had received enough of an impression that we weren’t welcome in this establishment we asked for our bill. To our dismay the £20 deposit had not even been deducted from our final amount, and this seemed be yet another inconvenience for Pete to rectify. Although the bill was written off by Pete this was after I complained again, and still no apology was given which is basic manners in the industry. Best avoided in our experience. What a shame.

We booked a table for 5 and when we turned up it was set for 4 which isn’t a big issue but instead of moving us to another bigger table they just squished another place at the small table when there was a bigger table...

Came for lunch, terrible service, waited for drinks for over 20 mins. Ordered fish &chips and one of the porsion cod was undercooked, sent it back but they still left it on a bill.

You have to go and taste Aron Janes cream tea trifle I am 62 and have eaten a lot of trifles in my Time this one has blown me away. Customer service was 10 out of 10 and the views to die for. Don’t take...

Another fine lunch in what has to be for me personally the best restaurant in Newquay, always come here every time we are down well done and if open around Christmas we will be in again.

I chose Harbour for a special birthday lunch. Had table with lovely view but we seemed to be the only people there. Menu was tiny and prices on the high side. Two of us had moules frites which were great ...only disparate in portions as we saw by the empty shells. The two ordering the grilled fish were disappointed that only new potatoes served with a tasty but small fish adorned with pea shoots. My sister chose traditional fish and chips which was not good. She struggled to find the fish in the batter and the potatoes..no words! She was offered an alternative with frites...much better. Maybe things are better in the evening but for us a costly and disappointing experience...I was embarrassed.

An excellent place to eat. Excellent Chef always willing to explain the Menu. Very polite staff.

Food was delicious, but felt over priced with sub standard coffee and little attention to detail regarding service. Waiters were friendly enough just felt for the price they should have taken more care over things like cutlery, water, wine pouring that sort of thing.

Lovely food, helpful staff and amazing views!

We had an amazing meal at this quaint restaurant overlooking the harbour in Newquay yesterday. The food was delicious and the front of house professional and friendly. We shared a starter of beetroot risotto with burrata, followed by cod loin with vegetables and fish and chips, finishing with trifle which they likened to Eton Mess. All dishes were so colourful, beautifully presented and absolutely delicious. As seasons visitor’s to Michelin star restaurants over the last 30 years we consider the food and presentation to be up there with the best. The food was tasty but portions were very small and it was all relatively expensive for what it was. £6 for three new potatoes cut in half. Our server was very friendly but we saw one of the chefs cursing and storming out of the restaurant when we arrived. View overlooking the harbour was pretty.

Not dog friendly inside so we can only enjoy it when it's a nice day but that doesn't put us off, the food was lovely I had food envy from everyone on our table. Great service too.
