Absolutely fantastic food. Great choice of vegetarian/vegan food and brilliant for coeliacs with clear labelling of gluten in just a few dishes (mostly gf) and knowledgeable staff re cross contamination. Highly recommend

This spot is a favorite for the friend I went with, and for good reason. The maki is delicious... you can't go wrong! Super fresh, and great balance of flavor. The cauliflower tempura is also crunchy deliciousness. Service was quick and ultra-friendly. Definitely will be back next time I'm in Brighton! And what's really awesome is that you get to decide what to pay on a sliding scale for the food, which creates a community feel.

We ordered Sushi burritos to take to the beach, a Fully Loaded and an Avocado K.I.S.S. They were absolutely delicious and really fresh, can’t wait to go again.

I did visit during Great Escape Festival. Everything was fine and the meal was good until 2,5 - 3 hours later when I started feeling weird and then I did spend my whole night puking my Sushi Burrito and the cauliflower...

The rice was uncooked which made the whole hoisin duck wrap inedible, i was already far gone from the location when I started eating it. It ruined my lunch.

Had a bento box from the smaller branch in Pool Valley (so I could go down to the beach and eat with a sea view). Very happy with it and added a tip. Filling ànd tasty as you get half a sushi wrap, 2 tofu rice pockets and edamme beans in the bento box. Yummy.

This is a must go place for coeliacs and gluten free people. Everything is gluten free! They also always ask you if you have any allergens so I imagine it could be a good place for some other allergy sufferers. The food is a good price and delicious.

We had a really nice lunch at Happy Maki today. I got the Fully Loaded burrito with a side of popcorn cauliflower, and my wife had a pokebowl. The food is great, and quite filling. I took half my burrito away. Service was very good and the staff are always friendly and polite. I highly recommend.

Today I ordered cauliflower popcorn plus Christmas ones for the first time. without exaggeration they are truly exceptional. I would like to know the secret of your crunchy batter, it's wonderful, you should make those with cranberry sauce all year round. I can't explain it in words, you just have to try it. my compliments.

We came here for something fresh for lunch on the beach. We got the caulipop and avocado K.I.S.S. We preferred the caulipop as the cauliflower was cooked very well but both were tasty! We also really liked the positive intentions of Happy Maki to focus on running a business which promotes equality and sustainability.

The best sushi I have ever had without doubt. So so tasty and our favourite meal on our weekend to Brighton, so much so we visited twice. The cod and duck sushi burritos and they were delicious. I wish there was one closer to where I live as I would be a regular.

Love the food and the vibe. I chose to order the cauliflower pops and a kids sushi burrito, and that was a very large portion for me to finish!! Definitely leaves you feeling full.

This restaurant combines creative and exciting food (the best vegan food we had in Brighton) with an ethical stance (for every meal you buy they plant a tree and feed a child). You can tell that the food is made with care and love. I particularly liked the salmon sashimi, it was as good as or better than the real thing.

Waited around 20 minutes for my roll being the only customers in the shop. Minimal health and safety seems to be followed here. When brought to the staff members attention that I had been waiting a long time, she asked us to repeat our order 3 times and instead of making our wrap proceeds to rather rudely have a conversation with someone and then says ‘we are taking longer than expected today to make the rolls due to coronavirus and we have been needing to wash our hands’ so, do you NOT usually wash your hands? And you did not in the entire 20 mins we were standing there while you had a chat. To make matters worse, the same staff member sneezed over and open exposed wrap into her elbow and proceeded to give it to me, in the wake of a health and safety crisis. To have spent so much money with this business, and to have poor service of this level is not ok to do to customers. I have been coming here for years, and receiving my vegan business discount, and was looking forward to future collaborations. After my experience yesterday, I will be formally writing in, to express my utmost disappointment with the way you treat your customers. I also find serving someone a wrap in the current circumstances having known you have sneezed over it is quite unethical for an ethical business.

Happy Maki is a vegetarian restaurant offering variants of East Asian wraps in a sushi style but significantly longer. The food is tasty and interesting. The people are fabulous. A lovely addition to The Lanes offering up a quirky vegan take on some classics.The restaurant is within sight of the coach stop and so not at all far from the Old Steine entrance to The Lanes and so forms part of one of Brighton's landmark zones. Heading in from the eastern entrance to the neighbourhood makes Happy Maki easy to spot and the creative cuisine makes it stand out even in this quirky area.Inside the restaurant is over two levels with the food produced on the ground floor and a small seating area down a flight of steps. The place looks modern and clean though not especially creatively decorated. The only quirky part of this place is the cuisine. The food comes in a variety of East Asian standards with substitutes for various products like duck or chicken. It is a really fun way for those of a vegan persuasion to get to know what these kinds of dishes taste like. A variety of combinations are possible including sauces. The food is tasty. A Hoisin 'duck' was delicious as was a 'chicken' dish. The starter was not too impressive and the rice had not been kept succulent. Still, the main element of the food was really good. Not the most filling nor was it mind-blowing but it was an excellent bite with fresh fare and aside from the rice a well-prepared offering. The people are also lovely with friendly discussion before and during food preparation. A bit of an explanation of concept was a helpful thing to have even though it probably would not have been the first time it has been described. Price is not too bad. It comes in at a reasonable value though. Food prep is live so it is possible to see everything and it comes out pretty quickly. Brighton is blessed with many vegan and vegetarian eateries. Happy Maki is a strong addition to the group with flavoursome eastern offerings in a healthy environment.

Such a simple and healthy idea and surprisingly filling. Made a little portion up especially for our baby also at no extra cost which was really appreciated. Well done Happy Maki for addressing a major problem of sustainability in the sushi industry. Great to enjoy this kind of food without endangering fish populations or having to pile up loads of single-use plastic containers.

Lovely staff. The sushi rolls are full of flavour and texture. My favourites are the hoisin ‘duck’ and the ‘cod’. Really appreciate the no plastic packaging ethos. This place deserves all the positive reviews and continued success.

Had the fully loaded for my lunch today and it was the tastiest thing I’ve eaten in ages! Staff in the shop were very friendly and helpful! Highly recommend it. Not my best photo, but was in too much of a hurry to wolf it down!

Am in Brighton for the week and I’ve already been three times. Such a great menu, food is so tasty. I reccomend the crispy ‘cod’ but am planning to get hoisin duck next. A MUST VISIT!

This is a great idea, I hadn't seen it until my boyfriend found it online. I'm vegan but I have taken many vegan and non-vegan people here and all have loved it. I think its great value for money and everything is so fresh. This is a great place to visit when at the beach or shopping. I haven't tried them all, but I hope to soon enough with summer round the corner

Stumbled across this place whilst looking for somewhere for lunch.

My experience at Happy Maki started off with confusion; stumbled upon it by chance with some friends, as we escaped the rain on Brighton pier. The location is odd, so much so it stood out from a while away. Upon entering, it took us several minutes to realise that it was vegan, solely based off the fact they used inverted commas for 'meat'. Having gone through the menu, and placed an order for the 'cod'/wasabi/pea roll and deep fried cauliflower 'chips', I was an even entertained in watching the three young staff members compliment one another's slicing technique and precision, while packing the sushi/burritos to its absolute extreme.

Took a while to get round to visiting happy maki after a friends reccomend, now I feel like a idiot for not going sooner.

Really interesting concept. Glad we stumbled across this place whilst visiting Brighton. We enjoyed the wraps and sweet potato fries. Shame it’s so much extra to eat in, we opted to take away for this reason. Glad they don’t use any plastic though. Would return.

Visited here today after my boyfriend found it online. Friendliest team of people with really simple menu choices (when I say simple, I mean easy to see what’s available). The food was lovely, portions are big! Would highly recommend regardless whether you’re vegan!

Just acpity it shuts at 2030 in the evening and at 1950 told you have 10 minutes to ear your food because staff have to clean the downstairs seated area at 2000

Lovely young fresh friendly welcome and the food is the same. Whether you are vegan or not (you wouldn't know it was vegan), this is totally delicious food and healthy. You come away feeling satisfied but not weighed down. Small basement seating but feels modern and clean. Service very quick. Right by sea front.

Tasted absolutely delicious! I ordered the "Fully Loaded" which is crispy tofu with sweet potato wedges, roasted sesame seeds, avocado, cucumber, red pepper and teriyaki sauce and cauliflower bites on the side with the apple crisp sparkling drink.

Had the Rainbow roll on both visits with ginger and wasabi because what is sushi without it? Not much to say beyond delicious. The venue itself isn't very big and on our first visit, they had no bananas for smoothies but still, I cannot and will not complain about the place. Very good and a relatively healthy option to eat out.

I have been in love with happy maki for years. For casual, delicious, affordable vegan dining this is an 11/10. The staff are lovely, the food is gorgeous, service is fast and the location itself is a perfect distance from town and the beach, especially in summer.

What a great little place - i've tried most of the sushi wraps over the past few months and they're so packed full of flavour and bursting with fresh, delicious ingredients. Really feels like you're doing yourself some good when eating here.

I often eat wraps there and I always enjoyed it. My stomach is really sensitive so if there is some ingredient that is not fresh I would have noticed it. So I can truly recommend it to everyone, you'll definitely eat something good.

I order from here fairly regularly but was recently disappointed. I ordered the Christmas special which came with a hair in. Unfortunately I realised at home when I had almost finished the wrap. I sent a Facebook message to the Happy Maki page which was opened and ignored.

OK it's Brighton, Business rates are high, rent is high so I suppose the place has to make ends meet. All I can say is that for £6.50 I can get the same or more for real sea food/fish sushi. For vegetable sushi and a thin strip of Tofu I am not convinced based on the prices. All I can say is that it adds another opportunity for those who are vegan or vegetarian to eat out. For me, it's one of those places where you try once but it's not worth going back to.

We Loved it. Friendly anstaff and food was delicious. I would definitely come back. My partner who is a meat lover did not realize that it was vegan. He had "chicken" and he loved it.

I am not vegan, but I do love sushi. Tried wraps from here for the first time today and I can honestly say it was the most delicious sushi based thing I have ever eaten. If you are vegan: go immediately! If you arent: go immediately anyway because it is super delicious and you will NOT miss the meat! Can't wait to go back and try aaalll the other wraps. Super fresh and affordable too!

The food tasted amazing and the mix of ingredients was perfect. Not only the food was healthy and meat free but also enviromentally frendly as the wrapping was made out of paper as well as the containers.

Wanted to visit happy maki for along time! Good with nut allergy - had separate rolling board for sushi. Ordered 3 duck rolls & the sweet potato one! Very nice!! Loved the metal cups for water, plastic free! Lovely kombucha & milkshakes as-well. Only one vegan in group of 4 but others loved it ! Can’t wait to return !

J'ai adoré mon maki aux saveurs délicieuses, j'ai eu les yeux plus gros que le ventre en prenant aussi des frites de patates douces...Le service était excellente, tout sourire, la musique super cool et la nourriture délicieuse, autrement dit c'est un 10/10 et j'ai hâte d'y retourner lors de mon prochain séjour à Brighton.

Stopped for lunch. The food is amazing! Fresh, full of goodness and for each one bought, a tree is planted and a child is fed! What more reason would you need to come...the staff are so friendly, welcoming and eager to assist. The best sushi wrap ive had and cant believe its vegan!!

I have been to Happy Maki about 4 times now and it is honestly my favourite place to eat in Brighton. Their ethics and vibe is great, the staff are great and the food is ridiculous. I know lots of non-vegans who love it here too. My favourite wrap is the Sweet Chilli Chic’ and I would also recommend their Popcorn Cauliflower. 100% check it out! Perfect for eating on the beach too as they are in a great location!

Me and some friends went to Happy Maki for the first time and I'm still shocked by how incredible the food was. I had the hoisin duck wrap and i've honestly never tasted anything as nice. It was average priced for the size and made fresh in front of me. Tasted so nice, can't wait to return for another.

Oh man I don't even know where to start...this was such a fantastic discovery during my trip to Brighton. The staff is friendly, the food is so dang good...and it really is the most convenient (and yummy) meal to pick up on your way to Brighton Beach. Everything tastes really fresh and healthy - my personal favourite is the Hoisin "Duck", but the Fully Loaded is a close second. Go pick one up and take it to the beach so this Canadian can live vicariously through you.

The food here is delicious and the place is so cute! The rolls are made right in front of you so you know it's fresh. It's a tad expensive which is the only reason I didn't give it 5 stars, however I know sushi ingredients can be dear, not to mention mock meats such as their "duck".

My word I enjoyed that! Quick service with a smile and a conversation...and the food was pretty good too. Coming back tomorrow!

So thankful for this place! Only 2 mins from the pier. Food was fast, and the staff were very warm and accommodating. They prepared the food whilst we watched, and the sushi combinations all looked delicious, and the two we tried were amazing, along with the side of popcorn cauliflower and coconut sauce. The addition of fresh herbs in the sushi worked really well. We even found our new fave tea (gingerbread chai) and had to go for the Bird&Blend; shop the following morning to buy our own!

Amazing food with brilliant service. Vegans and vegetarians would love this place. Meat eaters will also enjoy here as well, the “meat” is taste so close to the real thing, you would think your eating chicken or duck. I would recommend the Popcorn Califlower, but to be honest the whole menu is delicious

I tried the hoisin duck and the sweet chilli chick sushi burritos, I liket the first one but thought the second one was way better! However, the highlight of the menu is the side of cauliflower with coconut sauce: simply amazing!

My wife and I visited happy maki over the summer on our trip to Brighton. The happy maki is world class! Everything is amazing. We had the full house, sweet chili chicken and hosin mock duck. We also had the cauliflower bites too. Everything was outstanding. It's also so reasonably priced for the quality of the food.

Me and some friends came in for the second time during Pride. This place is so special and I can't say enough good things about it. The Hoisin Duck, Sweet Chilli Chick and Cauliflower Bites are out of this world. I dragged a few non vegan friends out for Happy Maki and everyone loved it. I had the delicious 'duck' sushi burrito and cauliflower side. The portions are quite generous, leaving us all completely full up for ages afterwards.

The food in Happy Maki is absolutely delicious! The sushi burritos are unique and full of flavour. It is so filling and excellent value for money. It is one of my top lunch spots in Brighton and the fact that it is so ethical is an extra bonus and is leading the way for future dining innovations. The staff are always so friendly and welcoming. Hi went here twice during a one week visit. The sushi 'burritos' are absolutely delicious and very unique, I've never seen the idea before. The sides were also yummy although the sweet potato fries were a bit soggy. The staff were friendly and also recommended other vegan restaurants which I think showed a nice community spirit. 100% recommend this place to vegans and non vegans!

I’m not really a sushi fan but I had to try this place, the fillings just sounded so exciting. I’d also had some of the cauliflower before and absolutely loved it. I had the sweet chilli chick and my boyfriend had the fully loaded. They looked absolutely incredible, and they’re made in front of you, kind of like subway sushi. I still don’t love sushi, I just don’t like seaweed but I did still enjoy it, my boyfriend loved his. Definitely had the popcorn cauliflower again, I could eat a bucket of that, so so tasty! We had some sweet chilli sweet potato fries as well that were really good. Also the staff in here are really lovely and friendly!!

I was staying in Brighton for the weekend and visited two days in a row because it was so good! It was easy to edit the choices on offer and the food was absolutely delicious. If only it were available closer to home!
