Amongst the best Fish N Chips dinners I have ever had! As a Canadian (English transplant) and a Fish n Chips aficionado, I have had some of the best Fish Suppers possible in Canada and on the coast of both England and Scotland including the historic village of Arbroath in Scotland, renowned for the “Smokie”. The Happy Friar’s dinner was simply outstanding!

Everything is normal quite good at this chippy. The fish are large portions. The chips are usually a bit soggy. On this occasion I opted for a cheese and onion pastie. The owner said that it was ready but I had to wait several minutes for it. When I opened the package at home I realised that the delay must have been because the pastie had been defrosted in the microwave. Soggy pastry on one of the most foul tasting pasties I've ever eaten it was absolutely disgusting. Never again!

Poor quality of food, I received a cheese burger which looks very terrible, I spoke to the owner, the owner replied to me that prices have gone up so the food is going to look like that, I was shocked on that response. Please look at the burger I received.

let's have a little chat about Ogma and his teeth. have you ever seen candy corn? yeah, that but rotten, his breath is revolting, i heard he keeps roadkill out back and when you order a cod or haddock you're actually just getting battered badger that's been hit by a truck and left for a week or two. get lost ogma. ahki.

First reviewed this fish and chip shop In 2017 and am happy to say they are still as good now as they were back then. I still wouldn’t buy fish and chips from anywhere else even though we have now moved to Buckingham. I take a thermal bag with me when I go to collect to keep them hot on the way home.

Cod and chips - the batter was wonderfully crispy despite (as another reviewer says) being wrapped in paper and taken home. A small cod is huge so I don’t usually buy when I’m on my own - plenty to share. 😊

We’ve lived in the town for a few years and regularly visited the happy friar. The fish and chips have been great every time but the wait is always so long. I’m not sure why but I’ve noticed they don’t serve out a quick portion of chips to people who pop in and will painfully go through orders for large groups first even if it means waiting for batches of nuggets etc. to be put together first. I understand there’s a queuing order but it seems barmy. Never witnessed this system in any other chip shop before. The last time we visited I sat there for 40minutes waiting for a portion of fish and chips. It was busy so I waited longer than usual however noticed two large orders who came after me were called up. I had been completely forgotten about. I was offered an apology and the lady’s face dropped when she realised but, given the excessive wait for such a simple order and being a regular a small discount or similar may have been a nice gesture.

As good a cod & chips as you're likely to find anywhere. The prices look a little high at first glance but the portions are very big. Think they'd make more money if they reduced their prices a little and their portions considerably. Only venture that opinion as someone who has owned fish and chip shops and whose family has for nearly 100 years. In the meantime,be careful not to over-order, there's people starving in the world..!

No iremos allí. En general la estancia opinión clara de este, ya que fue una completa pérdida de dinero.

We came across The Happy Friar by chance. What a find. Fried to order and with a smile; this is what all fish and chip shops should be like, but sadly are often not. What you get is precisely what you ordered, quality fresh fish (huge plaice in my case), cooked to order with tasty unsoggy batter and plenty of crispy chips. What was not to like?

Living in a village a few miles away and without any takeaways, this is my closest chippy, so I feel lucky that it's good! Where ever in the country I get fish and chips, my habit is to order haddock because it almost always has to be cooked. Yes a bit longer to wait, but never the disappointment of fish thats been in the cabinet for ages. Happy friar is also generous with the chips, I always have enough to re-fry with something else the next day. Delicious!Service is always friendly and polite.

we fancied fish and chips and I arrived at the premises are few minutes before opening, in fact I was the 3rd customer in the queue. waited the usual few minutes for the haddock to be cooked and was expecting my food to be spot on etc. got home and found the chips cold and greasy and the fish to be dry, greasy and inedible.Ended up throwing it on the fire!I would suggest that my food was left overs from the earlier session.!Complete waste of £10.00. Hot chips made from fresh potatoes not frozen fries. Good selection of products .Testament to its standard is the long queues on a Friday evening. One down point is the service can be a bit slow, perhaps if they had an order system rather than relying on memory and this would speed up service, people waiting for just chips could perhaps be served whilst those waiting for fish or other products waited .Other than that a damn good chippy!

I was working over the road around tea time as the lovely smell wafted over. As I was getting hungry, I went over for some fish and chips. There was quite a sizable queue forming, so was maybe having second thoughts but I hadn't noticed anything else on the street (maybe there was but was blinkered by the lovely smell) so decided to stick with it. The queue was efficiently dealt with so I didn't have to wait too long in the end. The short wait was well worth it. I took my fish & chips back to my work place and tucked in. They were without doubt among the best fish & chips I've ever had. I'm not from the area, but would definitely go out of my way and make sure I had room in my belly if I was ever close by again.

I don't generally like fish and chips, but this is the one place for miles around where I will go and not regret it afterwards. They serve delicious, freshly-cooked, non-greasy chips and tasty fish - and in huge portions too. A small portion of chips is easily enough for two people. They do get busy with long queues, but in contrast to some other reviewers I have always found the staff very pleasant and friendly. Not a laugh a minute, but if you're slaving over a chip fryer trying to serve people as fast as you can, there's not much spare time for frivolity!

Stopped by to pick up some food. Staff very flustered and disorganised when only having to deal with a few customers. Placed my order yet they served two people who came in after me. Can't even excuse them with saying I had ordered something that required cooking whilst I wait, nope! The food was cooked and sitting waiting to be served. They just 'forgot' me! Assuming the older gentleman who was frying the fish was the owner, he could do with a lesson in customer care. He looked so miserable and grunted at the two youngsters who were fumbling over the orders. Not a hello, thank you or goodbye from any member of staff. Shocking service. To add insult to injury, they wanted to charge me 5p for a bag. When will these small businesses stop trying to capitalise on the government bag charge. The charge only applies to multi national chains. The local chippy should not be charging for a bag when that charge is not going into the government fund. It's a shame as the food here is quite good and this establishment could be a little goldmine for the owner if he just smiled, taught his staff to smile and they all paid a little bit more effort on the customer care front.

Have had fish and chips from here for years. Although service can seem slow, as they constantly cook a fresh batch, it is worth the wait. Recently moved out of Winslow but return if I fancy a fish and chip supper; my new local chippie does not compare. Portions are very generous so you could share a single portion if you don't have a large appetite. Fish tastes lovely and fresh, amazing when you consider how far it is to the sea, and chips are perfect with a good sprinkle of salt and a splash of vinegar.

When I moved to Winslow 5 years ago, one of my first visits to a shop was The Happy Friar. If you ask for a large portion of fish and they don't have a single piece that suits you get two (still considerably sized pieces of fish). In fact you nearly alway get two. I don't think fish grow big enough to actually fit the description of a Happy Friar large fish. As I left the shop, fish spilling out of the bag, the rest of the customers actually gave an involuntary "Oooh!" of awe at my catch.Fried to perfection, and lovely chips too. In particular, try the haddock, it is deliciously fresh (and tastier and more environmentally sound than cod). I was converted.

This is my local chippy in Winslow and I have been a number of times. The fish portion size is good and alway fresh along with the chips. The only problem is how they serve you in batches. One guy who I assume is the owner takes the orders and collates them giving them out to his staff. He also then takes he money. This means quite often his staff are stood around doing nothing and a group of people will be either waiting for their order or waiting to be served. It would be great if he could trust his staff to serve more than one order at a time.

Used to use The Happy Friar. The chips are at best average as is the fish. The battered sausage is about the best but I wouldn't call it fantastic. When it is busy don't expect what you ordered if you ordered more than a couple of things. I wouldn't mind a mistake being made, but when you go back and complain that you haven't been given every thing you ordered there is no apology. The standard reply (it has happened to me on 3 separate occasions) is "you wouldn't have paid for it if you didn't get it". They seem to have no concept of the fact that as a customer you order something because you want it and are happy to pay for it.I am please I found Chubby's Chippy, and will only use the Happy Friar if Chubby's is closed.
