Happy Dragon Inn in Eastbourne

We ordered two curries and egg fried rice for takeaway. The curries were extremely sweet and tasted as if they had lots of sugar in them or were sweet and sour dishes. The meat was in tiny pieces and seemed like it was reconstituted. The rice was quite hard and didn't seem fried, just plain rice with a very small amount of egg in. They were such unpleasant meals, we were unable to finish them only eating a few mouthfuls. Unfortunately, when we contacted the restaurant to discuss this with them, they were unhelpful, dismissive and refused to give a full refund, only agreeing to refund the curries. We made the point that we were unable to eat plain rice as a meal and as the rice was covered in the sugary 'curry' but they refused to refund the full amount. A disapointing experience, would not recommend this restaurant and will certainly not return.

Staying locally, we saw a recommendation for this Chinese restaurant, so ordered a takeaway. I'm a bit of a Chinese restaurant snob, as I have family there, so I'm probably over-picky. Anyway, barbecued pork, a bit odd, very watery. Chicken chow mein ok, Kung po prawns basically sweet and sour, sickly and not great, absolutely no heat, chicken satay a bit dry. Egg fried rice very plain. Not recommended, but they were efficient and friendly.

The food was lovely, hot and fresh.. The older lady serving seemed rude for an all you can eat buffet at price £23 +pp We asked for a couple more mains before dessert she replied More!! Really!! 4 of us sharing smaller dishes, we hadn't over ordered to start with and shared about 6-8 dishes for our main so yes we wanted More..

Absolutely appalled! Booked a table online earlier in the day for the evening. When we got to the Resturant we discovered that they don’t take online bookings, even though it was booked through their website. Even had a booking confirmation over email too

We went here for our son’s 30th birthday. Nearly made a mistake as we didn’t book. Fortunately they squeezed us in. Next time we will definitely book as this place is amazing. Service is fantastic. Food is gorgeous. We are definitely going back very soon. Recommend highly!! xxx

Best Chinese in Eastbourne, super quick and very efficient and the food is light and fresh. No gloopy sweet and sour here and batter is light. Really tasty food and never to oily or heavy.

It was our first time to the Happy Dragon Inn and was not disappointed. The service was really good as was the food it was just under £120 for 3 of us and that was with us all having quite a few drinks each the meal is £20.90 per person for all you can eat. The staff where helpfully and friendly we would highly highly recommend!!!

While I understand the price increase its a shame the quality of food has declined. Singapore noodle dish was so salty we could not eat it , the Thai curry was bland with the beef having a bit of a slimy texture. Rice and noodles good but not we will be going back .

Came as a group of 6 and had a nice meal, it's your usual Chinese fare but all came out quickly and hot. Only downside was the table we were put on was rather small, especially when all the dishes came out! Literally filled the table. (Feel sorry for the dishwasher) And the fact that each dish was small, basically starter sizes. So if 4 of you ordered chow mein each you had 2 small dishes to share. Not 1 each which was a bit odd.! But overall it sorted out our Chinese fix for the time being and would return.

Went here with a friend as we are new to the area and we found the place to be clean tidy and the staff was friendly the food was hot when brought out to the table. We only ate from the starters and enjoyed it all, the ribs were tasty as was the other food we had

Got a couple of meals from here whilst we were on holiday in the area. Both were extremely tasty and plentiful too. One of the best Chinese meals I have had and at a reasonable price.

Our takeaway food was delivered quickly and was hot. On the plus side we got prawn crackers thrown in for free and the beans sprouts and noodles were nice. We had a Malaysian chicken curry …Kapitan..which wasn’t really to our taste. Too sweet really and pretty small pieces of tasteless chicken. On balance I think if we were to try this place again we’d probably try something that was a bit more standard and something that we know. Not my favourite but perhaps I just chose the wrong thing.

We enjoyed everything we ordered. Most dishes are in batter...but delicious. Service ok...not a restaurant to take your time over a meal. Has almost a cafe feel. Takeaways dominate with staff busy and phone constantly ringing. Would recommend the food....maybe not the ambiance

Tuve una comida para llevar que consistía en pollo satay, pollo Kung po, carne de res en verduras, chile dulce especial chow mien y chow mien especial. No podía comer el pollo Satay, estaba tan cocido, el resto de la comida estaba cocida. La única comida que era realmente comestible era el pollo Kung Po

I absolutely love this place,the food is amazing and I just love the starters more..the ladie who runs the restaurant floor is lovely and works very hard all the time,I love this place and book all the time when I want a nice meal out

So this food Wednesday we attended the fine happy dragon as always we were not disappointed, not only impeccable food but stellar service from the sugar smoked chicken to the inbetween duck through to the Thai green everything absolutely immaculate! 1 of our group loved the spring rolls so much he took 6 home in his pocket! Habían pasado algunos años desde que visitamos The Happy Dragon, la camarera principal no era muy acogedora, no sonreía y todo fue apresurado. La comida no era un parche en nuestras experiencias anteriores, era muy seca, porciones pequeñas y no se presentaban al estándar que siempre habíamos esperado. Decir que nos decepcionó fue un eufemismo, lamentablemente no volveremos.

Normalmente no escribo críticas o me quejo, y he estado en Happy Dragon muchas veces para una buena comida, pero esto fue muy malo, teniendo en cuenta el precio que pagas, que ahora es 18. 90 por persona, esperas comida decente, ¡era mucho mejor cuando era más barato! ! Hemos tenido un par de experiencias que no estaban tan bien como antes, pero pensamos que les daríamos el beneficio de la duda, desafortunadamente, después de la noche anterior, no volveremos otra vez.

Great tasting food as it's all cooked to order. Pre-booking advised as this is a very popular restaurant. The only downside is that children over 1.4m tall are classed as adults so are charged at the adult rate so may catch people out if you're not local.

It was a baby shower for my friend who was 9 months pregnant. I had a few other friends round and we were all looking forward to a great night. Mum to be fancied a Chinese, and so I ordered a meal from Happy Dragon.

After having eaten at the Happy Dragon many times and also having many excellent takeaway meals I have been disappointed with the last two meals we have had. It seems as though standards have really gone down the quality of the food is poor as if corners are being cut .what has always been a good restaurant is now just very average. We will not be using this restaurant anytime soon.

Went here the other night for the all you can eat for £18. We went as a group of four and ate and drank well. Service was good and food served promptly. Happy to visit again.

A group of friends and family went for a celebratory meal and it was so sub standard and disappointing. The staff at times were rude and abrupt. One girl even served orders at a table with her washing up gloves on! The starters took ages to arrive.....up 90 minutes. The portions were tiny and had very little meat in them. Overall this was an extremely disappointing meal and a total waste of money. I would not recommend this place to anyone. There are much better alternatives.

We get a delivery from this restaurant most months. Each dish is generous and very tasty. We have never had a bad dish from this restaurant, highly recommend to folk in the Pevensey area...

The staff are always attentive and polite. The food is incredible and always served freshly cooked. I especially recommend the salt and pepper prawns!

Pedidos tomados sin interacción, mucho en piloto automático, porciones de comida muy pequeñas y suaves. Nos sentimos apresurados como si quisieran que nos apresuráramos y nos acercáramos a un domingo. Una experiencia horrible, nunca más. El Castle Inn podría enseñarles una o dos cosas sobre la hospitalidad, ya que fueron excelentes la noche siguiente.

Vine aquí con mi novio porque ambos queríamos mucho chino. Había estado aquí una vez antes con mis amigos que aman este restaurante. El servicio era encantador y las camareras eran muy amables y serviciales. La comida era deliciosa y no tuvimos que esperar mucho tiempo entre los cursos. Me encanta la variedad que hay entre los entrantes y los platos principales. Creo que tiene un precio razonable por lo que recibe y la cantidad que puede tener. Recomendaría este restaurante a todo el mundo. Nos lo pasamos muy bien.

I would not recommend anyone with an allergy, intolerance or food preference eats here. I’m a vegetarian and politely informed the waitress that due to this I’d like my veggie spring rolls brought out separately. She brought me a plate which she said was vegetarian, but I’ve learned not to trust this. I pulled apart one of the rolls which was definitely vegetarian, so you’d think the rest on the plate were. The second one contained meat and I didn’t realise until I’d eaten a bite. I’m not usually one to make a fuss out of being vegetarian but the fact that I had politely informed them of my dietary needs beforehand made me angry. I haven’t eaten meat for 24 years and now thanks to this place I have. It just makes me think that they do not take requests like this seriously. I ended up throwing up in the toilet. They offered me my meal for free - very kind as I didn’t eat anything . They also spent the rest of the meal passing plates of meat for the rest of my party right under my nose which I thought was pretty inconsiderate. The service was also poor, the portions were ridiculously small and they bring everything out on one plate even if people are sitting at different ends of the table. 100% avoid this place as they don’t seem to take food safety and cross contamination seriously.

Bought take away here a few times, they also have a restaurant. food is always hot and good. came back from a break and decided to order delivery. was told it could be an hour, no prob, 15 mins it was at door and piping hot. will use them regularly.

We came here for our friends birthday because she loves it here and were pleasantly surprised. We'd had take away from here before which had been lovely but eating in is a whole new experience. There is a set price for the menu but that encouraged us to get whatever we wanted and share. The portions aren't a rediculous size either they are small which means you can have lots of different dishes or you can just ask for more. It was the perfect size for us and we thoroughly enjoyed it. I had the deep fried ice cream for dessert and it was amazing!! It was so much better than getting a take away. The price didn't put us off because if we order a chinese take away for anywhere is can cost up to £40 and even then we don't get to have everything we want. The smaller portions are also good because it means you're more likely to try new things for next time you go.

Only 1 waitress was on service so we had to wait half an hour between finishing starters and ordering our main meals. The owners were busy doing takeaway orders for most of our stay, and it seems they really didn't care about how long we were waiting for. The starters were the best part of the evening, which is disappointing. When we did finally get our mains they were mediocre at best - noodles were boring and rice was okay but nothing special. Didn't bother waiting another 20-30 minutes for ordering our desserts so we left. Our stay was 2 hours for starters, an in-between and main meals - which is not acceptable for a table service restaurant. Would not recommend anyone comes here unless you're getting a takeaway and/or enjoy overpriced oriental cuisine.

A booked meal for 12 all seated together on a long table. Lots of food and lots of choice for an all you can eat. Food is placed on your table and the quality was perfect. Service was quick and friendly. Would definitely recommend.

We have been to the Happy Dragon many times over the years & hadn't been for some time. My daughter chose it for her birthday meal and as one point both her & I were ready to walk out and go somewhere else. The service was dreadful . . . so slow & the restaurant was not overly full with plenty of staff on. The food was typical for this restaurant but to be honest was very greasy & not quite up to par. Not somewhere I will be running back to :( Oh and if you are vegan - very little options . . . vegetarian . . . not a lot on offer either :(

We had the Buffet (which is not a buffet at all... more of a banquet). You order off the menu and they cook it and bring it to your table. You can order as much as you like with starters, crispy duck, mains, noodles, rice and desserts.

Another disastrous takeaway. Absolutely inedible awful and had to be binned. Would never recommend this takeaway or restaurant

Came here with a friend and my two adult children to celebrate my son's birthday. We love this restaurant as the food is cooked to order.

Had take away, first time eaten from here. Sweet and sour chicken, the sauce was a bit sweeter than I expected, but could really taste the chicken and lots of it two, perfect. Noodles were lovely, bit of a kick but the two dishes complemented each other. Piping hot even when I got home. Great service and price was pretty good too for the portions. Will eat from here again. Compliments to the chefs.

Me and my family like to come here for various occasions such as birthdays and we have never been disappointed. The food is excellent, a tad on the expensive side with the recent price rise that's the only issue I have. The service is quick and this place is always busy so if you do go i recommend you book in advance. The deep fried ice cream is also amazing.

Had a very lovely meal and although it is expensive, it is all you can eat so easy enough to order more as and when required.

Went for evening meal Saturday pm all you can eat £17.95 food was lovely service was great absolute pleasure great menu and no haste order as much as you want portion sizes were just right.

I pre ordered and paid for a delivery for 10 people on Friday night to be delivered Saturday night at 7PM to an address less than 5 minutes away. Gone 7PM we called to be told our order had been put to one side and forgotten, this meal was for a mothers day celebration , which I had explained when ordering. We asked why it was forgotten and they couldn't explain, they gave us a £40 refund and said it would be delivered in half an hour, 4 starving children waiting longer was not good, half an hour passed and still nothing, until we rang yet again, it then turned up, minus 2 dishes, so one child had no dinner, we called again and were told the missing items were never ordered in the first place!! Definitely won't be ordering from there again!

I was in party of four dining on Saturday evening. We've dined here on numerous occasions. In general the food is good value and the staff pleasant. This evening the restaurant was full. The service was extremely slow and the staff were not very attentive. The 'first course' dishes did not arrive together and the pancakes for the duck were cold and hard. Two of the main course dishes were forgotten and had to be re-ordered. We would have complained had we been asked how the meal was. As the service was so so slow we decided against complaining and just wanted to finish our meal and leave.. The main problem appeared to be that the staff were concentrating on the 'take-away' side of the business almost ignoring the diners. We were all extremely disappointed. We may give this restaurant a 'miss' for a while and wait for an improvement.

We went with our normal practice of each person ordering their favourite dish, with the obligatory doubling up of rice and noodles. I asked that the order is enough for the party. When the food arrived the portions were barely more than a couple of mouthfuls, for example the prawn satay dish consisted of 3 prawns. When questioned the waitress said you can order as much as you want. The food was of mixed quality, average at best and did not warrant the price paid. For example the aromatic duck looked like it had been put through a blender and the satay source was poor quality. The other dishes were on a par with other Chinese restaurants, chilli beef, lemon chicken etc were all ok. Service was Ok but when I asked for a repeat of our first order due to the miniscule servings items were left off. I get the concept of eat as much as you can but when you are given a saucer as a mains plate and have to reorder everything it becomes quite a tedious experience

We went to the Happy Dragon after visiting the Eastbourne airshow with our friends and family and were happy to find friendly staff and a pleasant atmosphere.

Had a takeaway, chicken was weird, all crusty and dried out in the sweet & sour chicken Hong Kong style, crispy chilli beef, couldn't eat, so,so, sweet, no chilli, tasted like it had been fried in sugar. Had many good meals from this establishment, wont be using agaIn!

Just returned from the happy dragon,the food was ok if every other Chinese in the country was closed,the restaurant had 3tables eating so not busy so was flabbergasted when told on 3 separate occasions by the waitress to hurry up and order because it was busy,absolute rubbish service,if you don't like people don't work as a waitress,also had to send the cheap coke back as it was flat,I don't usually listen to reviews and like to judge for myself,,,well I have to admit,,all the negative reviews are true,,save your money and buy yourself a microwave meal for one,,it will have more flavour and your microwave will give better service...

For a set price,you are given a very comprehensive menu to choose from and the dishes are brought to you in the normal way. You can have as much as you want as long as you eat what you order. We have spent several evenings at this restaurant and the whole family has had a great time.

Went here last night for our wedding anniversary with family, there were 7 of us, we had terrible service, ordered our main dishes (around 10) had to wait a further 20 minutes for noodles and chips which should of been out at same time, noodles were soggy overdone, as if they forgot to serve them and just reheated them! Won't be returning, was not satisfied :-(

Went in for dinner with a couple of friends. Had starters which were sub standard & the mains were awful ! Noodles were not properly cooked & was served in a puddle of grease!Crispy beef , well , where was the beef ??!!Sweet & sour dishes were full of sugar & nothing much else !Black bean tasted entirely of something else & was as thick as glue!Rice was all lumpy !Complained to staff who didn't understand what we were saying , the lady just kept repeating what we were saying as she just didn't have a clue due to her lack of English , asked to speak to someone else who could understand but no one could !! The lady was very loud & very rude !Unbelievable, they really need to get staff who can speak & understand English for a start, especially at front of house !!Will not be returning as the whole evening was ruined!

I have never reviewed anything before, in fact I have joined trip advisor just to warn people about this place. The food was that bad. The hoisin and sweet chilli sauce were obviously watered down. Then there were the 'crispy prawns with creamy sauce' this turned out to be battered prawns with mayonnaise squirted on top - they were disgusting even without the weird mayo. The prawn toast was rotten, actually gone off, it tasted like sour milk. The seaweed was tasteless. The crispy beef was mostly hollow. Everything was covered in cheap batter. The satay sauce was completely artificial, who knows how it was made or what was in it but I wouldn't be surprised if there wasn't any actual peanuts involved at all. I finally tried my luck with a Tom Yum soup, again disappointing, it was way too concentrated and hasn't been made properly. I've never tasted one like this before. You could taste that everything was made with the cheapest ingredients possible. And the batter was like chip shop batter. The price for this quality was ludicrous and the service was mediocre to bad. I wouldn't go here again if someone paid me to.

Freshly cooked great food, ordered many starters, all arrived well presented and tasted great. The kids then ordered more starters! We moved onto Peking duck and pancakes, we waited quite a while for the duck and pancakes- veg and sauce dipped and eaten by the time the duck arrived- staff noticed and bought out more. Onto mains, unless we stated, the dishes came out for individuals and not for sharing. A great idea to save on food waste. The kids then ordered more starters! All bought out with no problems. Then puddings! Yup the kids had 2 of everything. The drinks were a bit steep. £2.80 for a pint of 'coke' definitely not a known brand....All round great food, just ask for water.

Great food a big selection. Never had a bad meal. Good for eating in and take away. Nice size portions well cooked and prepared. We use this place regularly. Take Aways always punctually delivered.

Bought a takeaway, arrived quickly and the driver was very friendly, this is where it ends though I'm afraid. Very disappointing food, the sweet and sour sauce was really sour. The chicken balls batter was really soft, the spare ribs were very fatty. The food just wasn't very good. We have had food from here before and we thought it was ok then, but today the food just seemed really poor quality. We used this takeaway because we were at my mums in Pevensey, but to be honest our takeaway in Hampden Park is far superior. I wish I had brought a take away from ours and brought it over.Sorry Happy Dragon

We've been here many times as live locally but haven't been for a few months. It was a Thursday evening and not especially busy, approximately 5 tables. The food was pretty good as always but is served in fits & starts, we'd almost finished one starter before another arrived. The portions are small but that suits us as you can order several, so that's the sweet part. The sour was the service. The waiter (shaved hair with black rimmed glasses) was abrupt to the point of rude, no smiles, no interaction, unwelcoming, just take order and put food on the table. There was a girl working with the takeaway delivery lad and bar who helped with the waiting on and off, she was lovely. They would have been better keeping the guy behind the bar and dealing with deliveries and leaving the girl to wait the restaurant. I think when you pay to visit a restaurant, the food obviously has to be good but the service and way you are treated is just as important.
