It is NOT a bistro. Its a small side room of the Hippadrome theatre. Only seats around twenty to twentyfour diners. Which makes it all the more surprisong how long we were there. 6pm till 7.15 for two courses. Half an hour wait for pudding? Not acceptable whatever way you look at it. Its chain pub menu, without the range of selections you get in a chain pub. The food is, well, bland. The service slow...very. Although that is the fault in the kitchen. The waiting staff were pleasant and friendly. Thankfully, the Fleetwood Mac tribute band were excellant. Eating there was handy....but definately not worth it.

The good news: - convenient if you are going to a show. - not expensive (£17 and a bit for a 2 course meal). - the merlo is tasty. - staff are freindly. Reality check: This is pub grub standard and not good pub grub at that. It does not look like microwave food but is not much better. Limp side salad. Fish pie that is more potato than fish and would benefit from finishing off under a hot grill. Cheese cake that is oddly gritty. There are plenty of other food outlets nearby - better to go to them.

DO NOT EAT HERE. I wish I had seen the reviews in here before booking. We had prebooked a 6pm table and prepaid for 2 adults & 2 kids pretheatre menus for 7.30pm show. All with the expectation that we would have a “great food with no rush” and that we would be enjoying “...a delicious three-course meal...[in] the perfect place to enjoy relaxed pre-theatre dining, safe in the knowledge you won't miss a moment of the show“ ( to quote their website). A true case of FALSE ADVERTISING. We arrived punctually. The restaurant is tiny...seats about 22. When we arrived there were 3 tables already seated. During our time there no one else arrived. There were 12 diners to serve in total. We were given menus as we were seated, but were given no children’s menu. I asked for them and was told there was just the standard menu they gave us and the kids should order from the adult menu. I asked them to check bc I had only paid for kids menu and knew from checking online before I booked, that one existed. Finally, 5 minutes later they found some kids menus in a cupboard. We ordered 2 adult burgers and 2 kids menus (which have 3 courses included). It then took 40 minutes to serve us 2 sets of carrot & cucumber sticks + hummus for the kids and 3 small dry chicken skewers with some sweet chilli sauce from a bottle for my husband. At 6.50pm other diners who had been there when we arrived, were starting to question where their food was, as did we. We expressed concerns about not having time to eat prepaid for desserts before the performance and arranged to eat them in the interval. By 7.10am still no mains had arrived yet despite being reassured by staff that it was imminent. One child was shaking and the other bawling her eyes out because they were SO HUNGRY. I complained as was told it was a small kitchen (even so there were 12 diners!). Finally @7.17pm adults mains got served, which were 2 ok burgers. I gave my burger to one of my kids (couldn’t give any to the other as she has a nut allergy and we hadn’t checked about the burger as we had checked her kids meal was ok expecting her to eat that, of course). @7.20pm, kids food finally arrives - ONE SAUSAGE in s pot of mash with Luke warm baked beans, the other got 3 index finger sized fish goujons with chips, when we had ordered chicken goujons. None of us had time to gobble more than a few mouthfuls of any meal before the call to be seated for the performance was made. The staff were trying to reassure us that puddings would be served smoothly in the interval. But when I asked my kids (both under 10 years old) if they still wanted their ice-creams at that time, both resoundly said ‘no’. When young children turn down ice-cream when they are hungry, you know that the experience was REALLY BAD and what was meant to be a treat - a fun family evening at the theatre, was completely spoilt by the poor experience. We were initially offered more drinks (as if we needed to wait for those to be ordered, delivered and drunk rapidly when we were already pushed for time), then free programmes for the performance, then vouchers to return to the restaurant at another time (as if we would EVER return). Finally, 3 minutes before curtain up, they offered to refund the cost of the meal, which we basically never got to eat. There are so many better alternatives within a 5 minute walk, go to one of those instead.

We chose to eat here for convenience for my elderly mother but never again! The service was terrible. We waited 40 minutes for the starter. The fish cakes were ok but the chicken skewers were dry and cold. We then waited another 40 minutes for the main course - the chips were burnt to a cinder. The avocado salad was absolutely awful. The avocado was soggy and slimy and freezing cold - as if it had been frozen and defrosted. It was inedible. The halloumi cheese was dry and completely over cooked and similarly inedible. We had to wait again for cutlery and condiments. When we complained we were offered a reduction of 79p on the drinks bill and told there was no more they could offer. An absolute waste of £50!!!

We had the two course special deal - which was just right for eating relatively early before the show ('The Jersey Boys'). We both had the fish cakes and dip starter - two generously large, quite cheesey hot fish cakes; for mains, we had the salad dish - one with haloumi and the other with chicken and bacon. The salad was plentiful with avocado, tomato and mixed leaves. The chicken came on three skewers, the bacon was crispy and the haloumi was properly browned - all good and we were able to add our own oil and balsamic.

Two ways of looking at this place. First it's next to the theatre and it's cheap which is about it. Second if you took a first date to the theatre for dinner here it would probably be your last date. It's has few redeeming factors. No ambience. A piano player that can't sing. On the occasion we went a number of items were not available on the menu. The main was an unattractive fish pie ( which actually tasted nice) in a tin basin with some cold runner beans dumped at the side. I complained about the cold veg. The waitress apologised and said carry on eating the pie I will get more veg! By the time she came back there was no pie left so I ate the veg from a tin bowl! To cap it all the drinks are expensive so drowning your sorrows could bankrupt you. My advice would be to pick a proper restaurant nearbye.

Ate here before seeing Dave Gorman at the Hippodrome. We booked for Pre show 2 course meal. Simple menu, food good we had grilled haloumi, fish pie, burger and sweet potato fries and cookie dough and ice cream. All good and very reasonably priced. Service was excellent. Problem was the long wait for food. We waited for over an hour. We were told it was because kitchen was doing food for Dave Gorman. Surely kitchen must be used to providing food for artiste and plan for it? Whatever had he ordered to cause such a hold up for the other diners? We had allowed 2 hours for our meal before the show and thought we would have plenty of time but actually was little time to spare before show. If you do the same as us make sure you allow plenty of time and a companion that doesn’t get hangry!

I ordered the salmon which came with beans and asparagus. I would have liked some new potatoes or something to go with it but it the end settled for some chips but I wasn't asked if I would like a side order until my food had already arrived, so I had already finished my main course before the chips arrived. It was my own fault for not reading the menu properly but it would have been good if the waitress had pointed it out and asked if I wanted any sides when I originally ordered my meal. Having said that, the staff were very nice and it was very cheap too at £25.90 for a 2 course meal for 2. Unfortunately it was very cold in there on 3rd March, I ate my meal with my coat on! The piano was rather loud but once the bar filled up, the voices drowned the sound out a bit. I would go again :-)

Visited pre an afternoon show, a bit apprehensive after seeing the poor reports. Two courses for under £13 included in theatre ticket deal what does one expect? Set Menu was a limited choice but adequate for our needs so has grilled starters and burgers main (see images). Food was hot and good quality. Staff were polite and attentive. The whole experience was good and we left feeling full and content.

In light of a lot of the previous reviews I was filled with a little trepidation when we arrived at 5.30pm. The bar area as you walk in was a bit spartan but it became apparent that a lot of people would be milling around as the opening of the show approached 2 hours later. Either way we were greeted by a personable waiter, Rogan, and we went through to the smaller dining room and were quickly asked what drinks we would like. I tried the Crossman's cider which was pleasant enough (though not quite my taste in proper cider) and we also chose a bottle of Alamos Malbec to enjoy with our starters/mains. We opted for starters of chicken skewers and grilled halloumi, which were nice - especially the halloumi which was not like the rubbery version some supermarkets sell. Our mains were the Chicken Quinott and a Bistro Burger and these too were enjoyable so together with the wine which accompanied the courses nicely I was very impressed with the value overall. Quantity wise they were more than enough for us bearing in mind it was early for us and we were about to sit through a show so we avoided the desserts. I guess the bistro must have upped their game since the reviews I had read because i didn't match our experience. Our personable waiter was again on hand in the bistro at the interval to hand out the very welcome gin and tonics. I would go back!

Attentive staff and great value meal before show. The menu did not have loads to choose from but I much prefer this to a huge choice and what we ordered (Lemon chicken skewers with rocket and chilli) and pulled pork with sweet potato fries and coleslaw) was excellent and tasty. The decor is nice and staff couldn't have been better. If you want Michelin * then this is not your venue but for a pre show dinner which is great value and tasty in nice surrounding, this was spot on.
