The receptionist wasn’t helpful, she wasn’t able to give any piece of information about the hotel, car park, restaurants, etc. The radiator wasn’t working in our room, I asked the receptionist twice to check or to turn it on, but nothing happens! They just ignored my request. If you are coming to this hotel, get ready to go through the terrible Scottish weather without heater!

We were only there to eat. Pleasant atmosphere and the waiter was very friendly. However, you would like a little more flexibility in a restaurant attached to a 4-star hotel. Unfortunately, instead of fries, potatoes were not possible! The sirloin steak was of good quality, but undercooked even though it was ordered medium rare. The side salad was a bit too small for the price and some of the ingredients were too cold! Soup and scallops as a starter are great!

Comfortable, clean and spacious rooms, if a little hot. Good showers. Nice service and decent food - scallops and mussels were very good, although I would have liked to have seen a few more local seafood options. Some of the paintwork and furniture could have done with being brought up to scratch.

We visited with a group in July and the staff could not cope. We were bullied into eating when they wanted. I had belly of pork, one of the cheapest cuts of meat and hardly had enough to taste. My wife had scampi and burnt chips. The original waitress is suffering from stress and needs some love. The menu is too extensive and needs to be trimmed to three daily specials for starters and three for main.

We ate at the restaurant and had a bad experience as vegetarians. Our starters were lovely so we know that the food quality has the potential to be good and they can cater for vegetarian options. However, the main course was so poor we ended up requesting it came off the bill. We were initially served meat risotto. It wasn't immediately obvious it contained meat and my husband ate some. Luckily this wasn't a huge issue for us but I'm sure it would be for some vegetarians. The waitress was very apologetic which we appreciated. When the correct main courses arrived they were dreadful. Very plain risotto rice and vegetables cooked in stock (not fully dissolved) and butter. Edible, but for £14 the quality was terrible. The food going to other tables looked good so we've no doubt that for meat and seafood eaters, this is probably a good place to eat. We agreed with one waitress to take the mains off the bill. When the bill arrived, one of the mains was left on and at a higher cost than advertised. The other waitress then was quite argumentative and defensive when we asked for this to be removed. She eventually did but it would have been nice to receive an apology and the correct bill as agreed. Overall a very disappointing experience.

Our saving grace in the torrential rain and wind! We stumbled through the door, three soggy cyclists to an extremely friendly and welcoming spot. Very kindly let us use their drying room for our stuff while we had coffee to warm our bones. Lovely coffee, friendly staff, can’t wait to come back and try the food! Excellent smoked fish board and good ( if slightly cold ) main fish courses sea bass and monkfish. Desserts looked nice and room had pleasant decor. BUT restaurants are 50% food 50% ambience. Two waitresses rushing around doing their best with reception desk , nearly full bar and emptier restaurant. Our table was right by kitchen door, despite lots of empty socially distanced tables across room, which they didn’t fill. The calls from kitchen staff and what sounded like a spin dryer started just as first course served and shrieked loudly through meal( the waitress said a fan was broken and awaiting repair). Adding in the girls running in and out of kitchen, it made for an unpleasant experience, despite the decent food.

Called in for dinner while staying at another hotel in Lochmaddy. What a find! Knew we were in for an excellent meal when the bread brought to table was freshly baked. The food was clearly prepared from scratch, not fussy but beautifully cooked and good size portions. The cullen skink was very tasty with chunks of fish and potato, the smokehouse platter had a variety of salmon and mackerel presented. The Italian sausage risotto was spicy but with a creamy sauce. We hardly had room for pudding but the sticky toffee pudding was soft and not too sweet which balanced well with the salted caramel sauce. £80 for this quality 3 course meal for 2 with beer, coffee and of course a whisky to finish off was a bargain. By far the best meal in a 10 day trip, well done chef!

After being on North Uist for 5 nights and struggling to find somewhere that was serving food, thankfully Hamersay House reopened just in time for our last evening before heading home.We arrived at 6pm as a party of 5 (2 adults and 3 children). The set menu was great for us adults but unfortunately the children wouldn't have eaten from it and the waitress explained they have a family menu between 4-6. We asked if the chef could use his discretion and allow the children to have the lasagne option, we explained that we hadn't had one decent meal for our trip and really wanted to at least have had one nice dinner. The Chef said he would be delighted to cook for us! Great!!!The food was slow to come out but I'm presuming it was all cooked from fresh and so was worth the wait. Everything we had was delicious. My husband especially enjoyed the Scallop starter, he had 3 of them ! lol And the chocolate fondant was perfectly gooey in the middle!Thank you for looking after us so well and ending our trip with a lovely evening.

We booked Christmas Dinner set menu, it was £30 per person for 3 courses. we were a party of around 24. The starter I couldn't eat was soup, with chunks of paper from the chorizo in it... The roast turkey was ok but ruined by the black (rotten) roast potatoes I couldn't eat accompanying it. The pudding I also couldn't eat was Eton mess, a tasteless blob of gelatin with some meringue on top. Was seriously not impressed, but couldn't express this to the staff as they were so busy trying to do drinks orders that were sometimes leaving us waiting an hour for a drink. I left hungry, as did the people around me. This is my first review as I've never felt the need to warn people so much as this before. I will not be back, and feel ripped off. Avoid.

The hotel has been set out well and I am sure the owners are trying very hard in a quiet location to get it right but it just doesnt quite get there. Not enough staff is very evident, and when we checked in the extent of welcome was what is your name and here is your key.We went out for a walk shortly after and returned a couple of hours later, around 5 oclock, and were sitting in the room, (thankfully) when the door was opened by another guest. He was embarrassed but we were concerned, and both went down to reception, to be informed that he had the key to room 1 which is the master key that could open all the rooms! For some reason he had mistaken our room for his, but I said to the girl on duty in the bar now, that this wasnt really very clever. She said she would mention t to the owner. Hopefully it has been addressed for future guests, as a master key getting into the wrong hands could be very costly.Dinner in the restaurant served its purpose, but if there was a restaurant anywhere nearby we would probably go there.Would suggest it needs a hand on the tiller to give it some presence, and the owner may be better served out front rather than in the kitchen

A somewhat underwhelming experience. The decor was fresh and new looking, although the computer screen in my eyeline in a nearby office was a touch distracting. The young waitress was glum, throughout, the other waitress a tad scatty. Our main courses were pleasant enough but I didn’t feel the waitress dealt well with my concern about kiwi fruit in a ‘Summer Fruit Crumble’, I just wanted to quietly make the point that this is a common allergen. She made me feel I was being a nuisance. We both wished we’d stayed at home. A low point in our holiday.

As part of a group of 8 Birdwatchers, we visited this restaurant on our last night on North Uist. Our leader had visited with another group the week before and had enjoyed his meal. He has visited on other occasions over the years he has been bringing his groups. Like Janet T who has reviewed below I also had the fish and chips and can only echo her comments. I could have had two meals from my local fish and chip shop and the quality would have been 100% better. When the waitress clear my place she asked if everything was ok and I told her that the meal was very mediocre and that I was prepared to pay anymore than £10 for it, certainly not the £16.50 it was priced at. Another waitress came to the table and wanted to know what our problem was with the fish and chips. Rather than cause a scene in front of other customers our group leader asked for a private word but it would appear that this lady’s attitude was far from helpful, she wouldn’t listen to what he had to say and kept making excuses about staffing, different chef etc etc. Some of the comments referring to our leader’s own complaint about his own food and some drinks that we had been served. See his separate report under Hamersay House Hotel screen. All in all a far from pleasant experience. Lesson learned, vote with our feet, don’t visit again. Some of the staff certainly need some training in customer service skills and how to deal with their attitude towards the people who pay their wages by their custom.

Lochmaddy was our third stop on the ride. Having come across very friendly welcoming (local and visitors) people during our trip until we called in person to book for an evening meal at this place. We were told they were not taking bookings as they were expecting a large group staying at their hotel. Later that evening (6m) phoned the hotel to inquire if they had a public/lounge bar open that evening to non-residents for bar meals - answer was YES and last order for food 8.30pm. So we turned up at 7.30pm bought two drink and asked to order some food. The young waitress said she will go and see while the lady we spoke earlier could be heard saying to her "I have already told them earlier this afternoon we are very busy". So why were we told on the phone otherwise and why be so rude and not even have the courtesy to apologies to say we had been misinformed. The place looked nice but unfortunately unable to review anything else other than rude unhelpful staff lacking basic manners.

I went here recently with a group of friends for a 'farewell' meal. I had a basic battered fish and chips meal, served with a pot of pea puree, a pot of tartare sauce and a salad garnish, priced at £16.50. The fish (haddock) was very nice but a large amount of the batter was so undercooked that it was just a gooey mess under a crisp outer shell. The chips were not very nice either - I don't even have words to describe them! The pea puree was 'fridge' cold with lukewarm spots and the tartare sauce was thick and 'gloopy' with no definitive taste. I have never had a fish and chips meal this bad, not even from a chip shop!

We came across this place as it was recommended on North Harbour restaurant’s Facebook page and boy we were not disappointed! We had the lobster and chorizo bisque and scallops to start- both of which were out of this world. For mains we had fish, which was fresh and beautifully presented and the venison steak which was so soft and juicy. Ginger and date pudding was a glutinous extra but we couldn’t resist how good it looked on a neighbouring table - fluffy, tasty and rich. :) We can’t wait to come back already!

A good cafe for breakfast and lunches serving basic fare ( everything with chips !) and home baking. Open from 8.30 am until last food orders at 3 pm. I had a bacon and black pudding roll which contained a substantial slice of Stornoway black pudding. Waited 20 minutes for it despite the cafe being almost empty. The cafe has an outdoor deck with views over the sea and it is adjacent to the Kilbride campsite. It has free WiFi.

Stunning view and friendly, efficient staff in a small family-run hotel. The quality of food was excellent, but fully grown humans may wish to order two main courses each, such was the rather miserly amount of actual food - scallops and monkfish respective.y - on our plates. Top marks for presentation and taste, but would have loved a little more.

We ate twice at Scarista House Restaurant during our recent trip to Harris. We have dined here before on previous visits over the last 20 years and this year it was better than ever. Beautifully prepared local food. First menu - Twice baked cheese soufflé, followed by Stornoway landed hake in a delicious sauce and some delicious vegetables. and then a chocolate roulade!. Second menu - goats cheese, courgette and cheese raviol with a nettle pesto (amazing!) followed by local hand dived scallops and the most delicious lemon tart with excellent pastry, lemon verbena ice cream and a strawberry and pink peppercorn coulis. Fabulous! Highly recommend the cooking here! An absolute delight!
