This place has really gone downhill since I last visited, probably pre-lockdown. It was always a little pricey but today I paid £11 for a very small plate of uninspiring looking, lukewarm, almost tasteless cheesy bubble and squeak that seemed to have come straight from the freezer to the microwave, topped with an egg and two chipolata-sized sausages that also seemed to have been microwaved as they were rubbery and tough. My grandson does not like eggs, so I asked if he could have an extra sausage instead, but was told that it was not possible unless I paid an extra £3, so he had the meal without an egg, but I still had to pay the full price. The drinks were very pricey too. This place used to have a really interesting deli and food/drink shop, which was a real part of its charm, but this has also gone. The menu is very limited In summary, very pricey and the food was extremely disappointing. I felt very dissatisfied and won't be returning.

We popped in for some hot drinks and something sweet after a walk in Hitchin. The place is lovely and the staff were pleasant. Just one thing slightly bothered me - my son has an allergy to dairy and I wanted to order a hot chocolate for him with alternative milk. However, the lady at the till told me their chocolate powder had milk in it and I could have cocoa beans but she would have to charge me more as these are more expensive. So £4.5 for a child's hot chocolate just because he has an allergy. I felt a bit misunderstood and did not see the need to pay this for a small hot chocolate that comes in a plastic cup. Everything else was great and desserts were lovely.

Table area dirty and sticky, inattentive servers, very slow service. Waited almost half hour for tea, sandwich and chips. Expensive limited menu with very over priced drinks not even served with nice cups and saucers. People seated after us received similar items faster, staff confused over table numbers. Would not visit again

Recently visited this site with a friend i have not been in for at least a year as I moved away from Hitchin for a while well what a difference it has seriously gone down hill ordered a cappuccino and a Tea and two cakes, cakes not to bad but the coffee was extremely hot so much so that the coffee flavour and been destroyed due to overheating off the milk on ordering the tea we asked for extra hot water which never arrived The menu is very limited and expensive the waitress when i asked her" how are you today" just looked at me and walked away nice no tip for you my dear. Did no complain in person just with my feet. Shame really as it used to be very nice no big deal really as there are many more establishments to choose from am told Joeys Brunch just down the road is well worth a visit but have not tried it yet so cant personally comment.

Halsey’s was started many years ago by my great great grandfather George Halsey. I made a trip down from Scotland and visited with my two nieces. The food was wonderful. Freshly cooked with quality ingredients and my sulphite allergy was well accommodated. I’m quite sure George Halsey would have approved!

Love sitting on the square on a nice day, but when the weather isn’t so great indoors is lovely. As I’m disabled ordering by the scanned QR code when in the square is perfect for me. Scan, choose your drinks and any food, pay and it is brought out to your table. If you prefer, you can go into the cafe and order and pay there. Food wise I would highly recommend the Eggy Bread with Maple Syrup or the Breakfast Baps. Staff are very polite and friendly.

What type coffee, what sort of milk, hot or cold milk, what sort of cup, eastern or western columbian hills blend.................. I JUST WANT A COFFEE........After 3 minutes I finally got it ordered. My wife wanted a Tuna Mayo sandwich. Not a melt, nothing special or fancy. Just a sandwich. Went to order and it was..................wait for it............SEVEN POUNDS..........Yep Seven quid for a couple of bits of bread, some tuna and a bit of mayo....... Are they having a laugh ? Is this central London ? Insanity. I had a salmon and cream cheese toasted bagel in Hampstead cheaper. We went to the caravan and for £1.50 more had the same sandwich, 2 coffees and a panini. Joke....

Since the first week of relative freedom last year we have been going to Halseys for coffee and toasties- both excellent- almost every day after shielding for months. They put up a gazebo on the square so we could sit outdoors in any weather, the stuff was always friendly trying their best running back and forth from the shop to serve us. They all worked extremely hard so we- the vulnerable ones- could sit outdoors and enjoy the music and meet friends. They supported us and helped us keep sane. So, to all of you who moan and complain, put yourselves in their place and be happy Halsey's survived!

Decided to try this venue again as I used to go here fairly often I ordered a Coffee and a slice of cake ,the cake was lovely but there was no Brown Sugar in the container or any knives or forks for that matter I asked the male server if I could have some the answer was somewhat surprising I was told they do not have any basic requirement in a Coffee shop I would have thought. the menu was to say the least basic not much choice but they certainly know how to charge for what they do sell. My suggestion try other coffee shop there is plenty to choose from. please start using saucers again

The bottom line is this: It doesn't take 20 minutes for a Bacon - Egg and Sausage Sandwich .... it just doesn't. You can tell me it does but it doesn't - Not when you have an empty restaurant at 8.45 AM. It does not. When i asked where my sandwich was after waiting 20 minutes the rude waitress said " it's being made fresh and there was another order ahead of yours" .... to which i replied " i am sure it was made fresh and that's nice but it's not a casserole you are making , it's a sandwich!" .. The fact is that people that can't run a joint like this should not be running it .... nowadays everyone believe they can run a place like this but the reality is that it takes a little more than the ability to take an order to run a place that sells hot food. oh , and just for your records .... the order ahead of mine was 2 slices of toast and what looked like some microwave scrambled eggs.... ( I know because i walked near the table with the customer eating it ) hardly a 20 minutes wait for that stuff..... and the cherry on the cake is the price of the ever so late sandwich ... £ 7.95 ..... word of advice: Learn from your mistakes - learn how to take criticism - the waitress had a great smile when i walked in but as soon as i told her i was unhappy with my 20 minutes wait she turned on the "rude and can't be bothered attitude " and didn't even serve me my food letting someone from the kitchen serve me instead ... It's not about you love , it's about the garbage food you were selling me, grow up a bit and deal with the issue instead of flaking out at the first sign of adversity ... .... and finally may i add that i have spent the last 2 hours on the loo because of their ghastly sandwich ?? NET: Avoid like COVID .... pretty awful place .... rude staff - overpriced garbage and no manners .....

We decided to go Halsey’s today as they had seating in the square. We ordered three coffees, one of which was to have oat milk as I am allergic to dairy.I had a few sips of my coffee and a few minutes later I started to feel an allergic reaction starting (I regularly go out for coffee in Hitchin and I rarely have a reaction as I felt today).I let one of the waitresses know that I believed my coffee had dairy in, she bluntly replied “well that looks like oat milk”. I asked whether there could’ve been cross contamination (the same milk jug used for dairy and non-dairy) she said “well we only have own steamer” and then walked away.I had quickly leave to head home as I was feeling very unwell (my allergy isn’t too bad, so there has to be a fair amount fo dairy for me to have such a reaction). Mistakes happen, but I was very disappointed with waitresses response and lack of care.

Visited here for breakfast this morning. Arrived ~08:35 and we were the only 2 people there. Food eventually arrived just after 9 am where the waitress said the long wait was because we were the first customers of the day!. Our order was one bacon bap and poached egg on toast with bacon. The bacon bap had burnt bacon and the bap had been toasted so much it was very hard. The poached eggs were good, but the toast was cold and the streaky bacon was so crisp and over cooked. After a few mouthfuls we gave up and I went over to the waitress to tell her that we were very disappointed with our food especially after our long wait. Instead of coming to look at our food she ran off into the kitchen to talk to the chef.

Popped in here for lunch and chose a quiche which when I asked came with a salad - as usual I asked that no balsamic dressing be put on that and the chef himself came over to check there wasn't anything else I couldn't eat - which impressed me. I wasn't quite so impressed when my lunch came, the quiche slice was very small - very tasty but I certainly would not have served such a small sliver. The accompanying salad was giant couscous and a mixed bean salad (not keen on either but that's not their fault) I was hoping for more leaves. Anyway, my companion had the hummus platter and enjoyed it, but my granddaughter didn't like the salad on her plate with her cheese toastie and she didn't like the herbs sprinkled on top. We did ask for a childs portion, but it obviously didn't translate into more bland less dressed food. She did however, really enjoy her hot chocolate and chocolate cup cake and her cloudy apple juice. The coffee was good too.

Saw this quaint looking shop front with peopleoutside drinking tea, wanted to know what was inside and were pleasantly suprised it is very deceptive and quaint the staff are very friendly and helpful and the food was cooked fresh served well and very tasty. It is clean and comfortable and is a place that although seems hidden it is hiding in the open. Well worth a visit

Visited yesterday with lunch for a friend, I love the interior of this place, very cosy and old fashioned. Food was very nice, and service fairly quick I'd love to visit again. Amazing selection of teas!!

Came in on a rainy Saturday at about 2.30 and had to wait for a table which soon became available, but there was precious little room to manoeuvre between other dining couples, one of whom got a bit grumpy with us. The menu is short but the food is good and well priced. Of particular note are the lovely Japanese iron teapots, the ones for 2 people are especially lovely.

Lunched here on 6 April. We have walked past Halsey's many times but today were tempted in. What a find. Nice varied lunch time menu with plenty of choices. Food was well presented and very tasty. Table service was very good and all staff were friendly and welcoming. For the quality of food prices were very reasonable. Having now discovered this place we will definitely return again.

Whenever we visit Hitchin,my daughter and I bust here for breakfast the Shakshuka is great, and as an Israeli I should know! We called in lunch time today with my 2 grandchildren, it was very busy, but staff couldn’t have been more helpful and friendly, they found somewhere for the prom, found us a table and brought a high chair for the baby. I’m a vegetarian, and there is a good variety to choose from. I had the bubble and squeak with mushrooms. Oh my this was to die for, it was so good! Can’t recommend Halsey high enough.

We don't visit Hitchen very open, but it's such a charming old style town centre, with so many eateries and coffee shops, we are always tempted to stay that little longer. Rather than visit the 'chain' coffee shops we opted to support an independent and called in for coffee. Having received such a warm welcome and, with such great coffee choice, we extended our stay to include a light lunch. With my daughters' dietary requirements sometimes that can be a little restrictive, but here nothing proved too much trouble. Nice atmosphere, good food, good coffee - what more can you want?Really glad we stopped by - perhaps you should too.

Saturday afternoon for coffee. This used to be a pleasant place to visit but sadly not anymore. Too many tables and close together. Long wait for food to arrive and not the best. Coffee was only lukewarm and when asked for a hotter one it took 10 minutes to arrive and still not hot. Plenty of other better places for coffee in Hitchin so no plans to go back anytime soon

I must admit that we dived in a bit here, we saw the roast pork joint in the window and decided that’s what we wanted so I asked for two before we’d even sat down. Schoolboy error. We saw some lovely dishes being served up, a lovely looking bubble and squeak with mushrooms and poached egg and a very decent tuna melt.

Arrived at a busy lunchtime, but the staff found the three of us plus baby in pram a table where we had room, but we're out of other customers way. Two of us had the artisan roll with Brie and bacon, delicious. The other had the quiche and salad, also voted very good. Like the teapots, with plenty in for a second cup.

Halseys staff are always welcoming, and attentive. Their Hog Roast Bap with stuffing and apple sauce is just too good for words. The place is very popular so be prepared to wait for a table, and even share one with stranger... My 'go to' place for lunch with visiting friends and family, and then perhaps a pootle around the many charity shops for afters?....

We have always had lovely lunches here, but yesterday's was particularly good. The bun with mushroom and Brie was delicious. Rather expensive, but I don't mind paying for good quality. Friendly staff who can advise on the good range of tea and coffee

Located on the corner of the market square we sat outside with a guitar playing busker close by. They have a wide range of tea and coffees. I had the gunpowder green tea which was nice but a slightly bitter. My husband had a cappuccino. Both drinks came to £5.60.

I attended Hitchin Priory with 3 other members of my family for Christmas Day lunch. The whole experience from start to finish was exceptional. The staff, service and food were all excellent. The feel of the room was very relaxing and the tables nicely spaced out. The atmosphere was very convivial. If it is still the same set up next year we shall definitely be back. Our visit to Hitchin Priory made our Christmas Day. Thanks to all concerned.

We like Wetherspoons, and the lovely buildings that are used, this building was nice, but not as good as others.

This has been our local for 10 years. We’ve seen a few changes during that time and have always supported it. Unfortunately it seems to have turned into a sports bar. I can understand this for the Euros and Olympics. However, last night there were 3 large TVs blaring with Sky Sports. The locals don’t want this. We’ll be finding a new local that cares about what their local customers want.

Used to go here a lot and there were two lovely girls waiting thr tables, one cook and the senior man overseeing it all. Today we visited and no adult apart from the cook. Three young waiting staff who were clueless. Two breakfasts and two hot drinks. One drink came, they forgot the other one and dive minutes later they finally realised. Breakfasts arrived but no toast, another five minute wait and was plonked down unceremoniously without a word. Finally someone should tell the young boy in there to get his mum to put new elastic or a belt on because he kept his joggers half way down his backside and they kept slipping off, constantly adjusting them slightly up so his pants were in show. Not appropriate for serving in a cafe. Overall service was downhill but food still good.
