Three wonderful courses of great tasting food served in a quaint cottage located in the beautiful village of Funtington. Recommended by a friend, we headed here for a birthday treat and thoroughly enjoyed great food in a lovely atmosphere. Friendly and welcoming team; all visible throughout the evening and all ensuring we enjoyed both the food and evening as a whole. Thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

The food was outstanding. But if you want atmosphere and friendly staff - don’t go there! I was so disappointed with the staffs attitude. No welcome. We had to wait for 2 guests - weren’t asked if we wanted a drink. No service at all. I’ve passed the restaurant for 50 years and always wanted to go. So now I’ve been. Won’t go back and won’t recommend

Been meaning to visit Hallidays ever since we moved into the area 7 years ago. We visited with wine friends on a Saturday night and had an excellent meal enjoyed by all. A warm welcome from all the staff, bread and special gluten free bread (well noted from the booking). Four choices each from starters main and desert. A pea pear and watercress soup was an excellent choice though the smoked salmon beetroot and the whipped goats cheese delighted the rest of the party. A mains of beef fillet was beautifully cooked at medium rare though there was some food envy when the skate appeared. To round it off the apple tart with caramel ice cream was delicious as was a rhubarb crème brûlée. A couple of bottles of Romanian Pinot helped wash it down and preceding everything was the Little Monster Yul. Great service and will return. Highly recommended

Food was a little bland tbh, it was good food for the price but lacked that wow factor. Beautiful surrounding, could do with a little background music for some atmosphere and although the waiting staff were friendly and polite, it lacked a little class.

This was my first visit, and I would definitely return. The chef was friendly and tried to accommodate our request for a low carbohydrate meal. The food was very well cooked, with fresh high quality ingredients. The service was efficient and friendly. The prices compared favourably with other establishments, so it was very good value.

I could not fault anything about this restaurant. Pleasant service, wonderful fresh food prepared imaginatively, good choices for each course. On reflection I thought the prices were very fair considering the quality of the food. I will certainly come here again. You can pay a lot more to eat out and perhaps get a more elaborate dining experience but you will not get better food.

It was well lit, clean and warm but on arrival in the winter no one offered to take our coats, when asked where to put them, 'Oh just put them on the back of your chair'. The quality of the staff and service is on par with with your local pub - no finesse. The dishes were plain straight from the 60's and 70's but served with as panache as as at a motorway service station. The Sauce Diane with the fillet of beef 'en croute' was a thick tasteless galloop; the the beef itself was good. Overall we were really disappointed and the reviewers who rate this establishment with 5 stars should take a leaf out of Rinaldis Wakefield’s book. ‘If you review this restaurant as excellent then you should really get out more, there’s far better out there.’ and it could be added what it tells others of your experiences or lack of fine dining.

Superb "Home-Cooked" Roast. We were wondering how they would do it but it was all packed beautifully in paper bags, foil trays & compostable packaging. We were asked to collect at 1:00pm & food was ready on time & we collected from the kitchen window where we were met for payment. Still warm when we got home, just needed a 1m zap in the microwave. Lovely Organic Chicken Roast Dinner with parsnips, carrots & mange tout, & excellent roast potatoes. We had some savoury bread (lovely dipped in the gravy) with a delicious coconut/macaroon tart with cream for dessert. What a treat.

The food was the shining light of this visit. A small but well executed menu. Must also say that the wine list was good and not outrageously priced. However, I felt the whole place lacked atmosphere and that the service was just a little under the standard you receive from similarly styled places in the local area. All in all good but not incredible-maybe a little background music so that you dont feel the need to whisper to not have your conversation listened into by the table next to you!

The food is excellent but the service doesn't do it justice. I can't recall ever been served by such sullen staff, no smiles, no conversation, not particularly well dressed, reaching over to serve. 2/10. Fortunately the food was excellent. Scallops, and the Charcuterie for our starters - I don't think we've ever had better. Hake, and Guinea Fowl to follow, and then Creme Brûlée. A nice Albarino, and Rioja to accompany. The Chichester area is well served with excellent restaurants. This one is excellent on merit for the food but disappointing with regard to service.

We were welcomed by the chef's wife, and shown to the cosy bar area, where we could relax and look at the menu. Nothing was rushed. Then we were invited into the dining room, where the quiet ambience matched our mood. The food, service, wine, and staff were only exceeded by the value for money. Wonderful!

If it was based on food alone, I would give this place 5 stars without a doubt - it was truly excellent and we could not fault it one bit. However, the decor really needs to be improved if they want to create a better overall impression. It's such a beautiful building outside and I expected the inside to be plush with nice furniture, a place you'd want to sit in all night after you'd eaten. However, it is very plain and cold-looking with very little atmosphere. Shame really as I'd looked forward to going there for a long time and it was a special occasion that didn't end up feeling very special. Like I said though, the food was second to none so hats off to the chef - superb!

Our first time at this well-regarded restaurant, local ot my partner's home We considered the six-course dinner (with pre-canapes and post petit-foursin addition) excellent value at £75 per head. Food-quality was beyond reproach and helpful 'wine-by-the-glass' suggestions were made on the menu to accompany each course (we followed this option and were not disappointed; prices were reasonable). Naturally fully-booked on the 31st December (there were probably 24 or so dining in total - 12 as couples/fours in one room and a large party in a second room), the service was paced across the evening so that everything ran smoothly from arrival at 8p.m. to the glass of Champagnes at midnight. Very pleasingly, although we had paid £25 a head deposit well in advance for our intended group of 4, the owners were completely understanding when the second couple had to pull-out on the day due to illness and did not look for their £50 to be 'forfeit' (I do not think other restauramts would be this understanding). Based on our experience, we will certainly be visitng again and the restaurant carries a firm personal recommendation. Do not expect fancy decor. You visit here for the food-quality and in all likelihood you will be delighted whenever you choose to dine at Halliday's

Spurred on by this restaurant's good reputation we took our hosts out to dinner. The entrees and main courses were excellent - tasty and elegant. The summer pudding though needs to be made with blackcurrants not peaches, so that it's sharp and flavoursome, and the bread must be a dense German type. Using supermarket sliced white bread produces slime. How could the chef not know that?

I have now been to Hallidays for both Lunches and Dinners on a number of occasions. This is one of the few restaurants where I have never had a bad meal; every one has been a delight. It is a charming low-ceiling part-timbered building which is run by a husband and wife team - the husband as a superb chef and the wife as your thoroughly charming host, always with smile and a laugh to greet you. The variety of well-presented dishes is wide enough to satisfy every palate and a much wider choice of usual and unusual servings is provided than can be found at many restaurants. Prices are very moderate for the quality and variety provided and the latter is such that it is almost impossible to recommend any particular dish from the choices available.

We were attending a function very close by and were very lucky to find Hallidays just around the corner. They have an apartment for four I think and also a studio apartment which is the one we stayed in. It was spotless and had everything you needed for a proper holiday not just an overnight stay. The portions are just right, allowing you to fully experience the menu by eating 3 courses without feeling uncomfortably full. I think the menu price is excellent value for money considering the quality of the food and the whole dining experience (water, bread or olives are not charged for). I have paid much more for very mediocre food in a pub. There is no music playing which is our preference as then you can actually talk to each other. We have also dined at many of their themed dining events which are an absolute bargain and most enjoyable.

As a newcomer to the area I was curious to try this very local restaurant so was delighted to be invited to join local ladies for a lunchtime get together. Sadly I, and I understand others in the group, will not be returning. Admittedly it was a quiet lunchtime with only 1 other table of diners but there was no ambience. It lacked background music but more importantly the proprietor made us feel decidedly unwelcome. Thankfully the food was very good, albeit a tad expensive for a lunch menu. The wine was nice but we were made to feel a nuisance when we asked for it to be poured and we felt we had out stayed our visit! We will be looking elsewhere next time - such a shame when it's on our doorstep.

It is very difficult to know what to say - perhaps it is best to start with the good things. The fish, meat and vegetables were of exceptionally high quality, generous portions and cooked to perfection with one exception. The terrine had little flavour and was dry. The crab salad starter on avocado - quite delicious. The main courses, entrecote (in fact was contra fillet) and game hen with wild mushrooms arrived both with brownish sauces and looked very dull on white plates, a little green garnish would have improved the presentation, lambs leaves or watercress sprig to lift the plate. The quality of meat and the precise cooking was a joy. The menu is traditional and quite basic, no fol de rols or amuse bouche. They have a really good idea of half bottles of wine so a white to start and a red with the meat at a fair price. The bad news is that the ambience is totally sterile and bland. A little overpriced compared to other fine dining restaurants in this area.

Oddly a previous reviewer seemed to have almost exactly the same experience we did at Hallidays. As he put it, the service is very efficient but not overly relaxing. We also found one bread roll to be a bit mean. Additional points we found were that the menus were a bit annoying, two different ones with different set prices makes for a limited choice and compromises on what you actually want to order. That said the food we had was delicious, very traditional, but done very well. The highlights were definitely the crab 'scotch' egg and apple tart. For this reason I can see why people visit here but for us the main problem was the complete lack of atmosphere. Although we went on a particularly quiet evening, I don't see why there wasn't any background music playing. Seated very close to the only other table in silence makes for a somewhat awkward experience.

My partner and I had a wonderful evening spent in good company on New Years Eve in the excellent Hallidays restaurant. It wasn't our first visit and certainly won't be our last. The evening menu was excellent,so good you didn't want to it to end! So thank you staff and a Happy New Year.5 stars!

This is an excellent eatery, but moderately expensive. Set back off the main thoroughfare, you need to book in advance! Excellent quality and good choice of menu. Allow time !

My wife and I had the great good fortune to be guests of our Hampshire friends at a special Hallidays Autumn game dinner on 30th October. It was a most pleasant and unhurried evening of fine food, fine wine and much lively conversation. The kitchen staff were magnificent, preparing and plating a scrumptious five courses to a restaurant packed with diners. The atmosphere was relaxed and the table service was excellent. Full credit to management for selecting a fine quality wine to accompany each dish. This was an exceptionally grand evening in which Hallidays gave it 100% in planning and executing a splendid menu. All dishes were high quality, but I have to say the cocoa crusted venison with gin jus was fabulous - I've not tasted better.Living 50 miles away makes it difficult to revisit Hallidays more frequently, but I would recommend anyone living between Southampton, Petersfield and Arundel and looking for top quality food and an excellent wine list, give Hallidays a try. I'm sure you would not be disappointed. As for value for money, the proof is our host is a Yorkshireman who knows the meaning of brass and he is a regular at Hallidays. I'm a Scotsman and didn't have to feel my wallet. What could be better?

High expectations were met with regards to the location, the food, and a good wine selection. Restaurant itself a little tired and service, while efficient, did not make you feel that ease.Hence a 4 and not a 5.Food was outstanding, recommend the lamb and the cod...

I enjoyed an excellent monkfish in a cream sauce, whilst my wife had the grouse. Both courses excellently cooked and prepared. A good selection of vegetables. Service was good and the restaurant makes for an intimate evening. There is plenty of room inbetween the tables and the low beams make for a great atmosphere. One thing - I like to make a gratuity without being asked if I would before they closed the credit slip. Puts you on the spot and you don't like to refuse.

Just returned from a gorgeous anniversary meal here. Starters of Selsey crab cakes and local scallops, mains of best end of lamb and John Dory fillets, served with lovely turned carrots and 'spaghetti style' courgettes, delicious, and served on piping hot plates. Deserts of apple tarte tatin and a gooseberry creme compote. The staff were very friendly and attentive and service very good, & lovely atmospere, We used our Taste card here, with 25% off A la carte menu. We will definitely return and will recommend to friends. Thank you

We had a lovely meal -really great food, stupendous bottle of wine and attentive (but not OTT service) on Friday 26th June.Perfect home cured salmon with a spicy relish / chutney made of cured onion, and queen scallops with chorizo (delicate not overdone) and borlotti beans for first courses.Sea trout with brown shrimps with samphire was delicious but perhaps overshadowed by my partners black bream with tapenade and peppers.Puddings were fab - mine rhubarb parfait with dinks gingery meringues, his apricot creme pot - helped along by the glass of french muscat. We drank a bottle of Toque et Cloches which was great - as good the last drop as the first - there were half a dozen choices we were tempted by all at a reasonable prices.

Had a wonderful meal there on the 18th June, 2015. Delicious food, beautifully served. The wine was good too. Impeccably presented with attention to every detail including the petits fours which came with the filter coffee.

A family birthday gathering. Car park small and would be better with lined spaces. We asked which were staff cars and parked in front. Drinks on arrival were good. Then we were seated as there was not room in the reception area for us. Food is excellent, but the service is not quite as refined. Dishes not clear together spare glasses left etc. but value for money was excellent and generous portions too. Would recommend. It is a small venue so book ahead.

This was the first time that my wife and I had been to Hallidays. It is quite a small restaurant, with only 8 tables. It is not the cheapest place to eat but, for a special occasion, in this case my wife's birthday, it is hard to beat. The food was excellent and my steak was exactly as I liked it. roll on the next special occasion!

a small restaurant beautifully set out. The napkin rings are old spoons flattened which makes them a unique addition to the table plus provides a talking point. The food was delicious, not huge portions which was great but still came away feeling satisfied. The atmosphere was lovely and all the staff extremely friendly. Would definitely go there again.

This is the second time we have been to Hallidays. The front of house service is impeccable and our food was delicious. Beautiful steak and fish, with well thought out vegetable accompaniments. The dining room is cosy and quiet, and the menu full of local produce. If you like good food and attentive service, Hallidays is an excellent choice.

This is the second time we have visited for New Years Eve. The food was superb - good portion sizes staggered gently through the evening so there is time to enjoy the food and ambience and chat with friends...... and shortly before midnight after desert has been cleared away, there was a timely glass of champagne and everyone signing Auld langs Syne. The service here is very friendly and welcoming (not at all stuffy), but dining is formal in a quirky old restaurant building. If you come for New Years Eve, don't expect dancing and fast food, but if you prefer lovely food that is excellently cooked from a lovely balance menu accompanied by an excellent wine list and very friendly service, then I would highly recommend Hallidays.

We booked for a Saturday evening and upon arrival was greeted by the owner, who offered to take the coats and asked if we like to go through to a lounge waiting area, where menus were provided. A few minutes later our drink order was taken. No draft beer, just bottles which was a little disappointing. They did not serve Prosecco by the glass, but they do offer small bottles of Prosecco.About 15 minutes after our order was taken, we were asked if we would like to go through too our table, which I have to say I like where we sat. The layout was not cramped like some restaurants. The restaurant is quite small with low ceiling and really low beams (watch your head) and looked like it could cater for approx. 24 people. This evening it was full, but we did not notice any delays due to them being busy. For our starters we ordered the Seared Scottish Scallops with Jerusalem Artichokes and Hazelnuts and Game Terrine and they were both wonderfully presented and tasted lovely. The main course was a tough choice as they was a couple of items that took our fancy, but in the end we decided to go for the Fillet of Cod wrapped in Serrano Ham, Creamed Leeks and Tarragon which was really nice, but we could not decide if the tarragon was too strong a flavour for the dish, but in the end we decided it did bring the dish together and it was thoroughly enjoyed. The other main dish ordered was the Griddled Loin of Blackmore Venison, Braised Chestnuts, Juniper and Port and this was very tender and a joy to eat.Accompanying our dinner we choose a Sancerre Henri Bourgeois 2008, which was delicious. Our desert was Crème Brulee with Raspberry & Champagne Sorbet and a Selection of Artisan British Cheese, Crackers and Chutney accompanied by a 10 year old port, wonderful.A really nice touch at the end of the meal was the Chef came out and chatted and also offered some suggestions to a dish I have been experimenting with.Overall, a wonderful evening with excellent food and nice friendly service. Will be going back in 2015.

On Saturday October 25th At 7 o'clock as we walked from the parking area past the kitchen windows the two lads that had zipped into a spot ahead of us were there.'You're late ' I said. Big grins. With that begining my wife and I and my Mother had a very pleasant evening. The service is very professional to the point of dryness -at times we really like being pampered, this was one of those times. To make our evening relaxed, usually we download the menu and wine list of where we plan to eat so can have the order into the kitchen quickly and have our wine choices for our server as soon as we are seated.A bottle of wine appeared very quickly (a second quietly later) and our orders were taken-The Butternut Squash soup and Terrine of local game well put together.Roast grouse was delicious.Sea Bass presented well and tasty.Wished we had taken notice of the side salad option.Would have had that rather than the bowl of vegetables that had no relation to the entrees- Those Brits want their veggies!(I am a US green card holder since 1969!)Passionfruit sorbet with the creme brulee (no starch filler) was very good.As we walked past the kitchen to the parking lot we had a thank you from the chef and a big wave from the two kitchen helpers.A very pleasant evening,Thank You

Having lived in France for 10 years we have a lot of excellent restaurants to compare Hallidays with.We were warmly welcomed both by the lady fronting the restaurant and chef. Our food arrived quickly and was delicious. I loved the starter with spiced oranges and we both enjoyed our pork with beautifully crispy crackling. This restaurant certainly compares well to many French restaurants in the same Michelin classification. Having read some of the negative comments we wondered if the reviewers were actually writing about the same restaurant. We would have no reservations about eating here again(and again).

Chef Ravi rose magnificently to the curry challenge! I managed to down about half my venison and prawn curries, served with rice and condiments, but luckily my companion finished his grilled skewer and demolished the rest. Terrific to have authentic Indian food available in Graffham (on special request). Bravo to the the White Horse for extending its excellent range.

Visited here for afternoon tea. Welcome was ok, but then we waited for a while to see if there was a free table. Bizarrely no one else was in the cafe and the upstairs service where we were seated was almost unfriendly and you felt you were in the way. When we asked for a spoon for our tea we were greeted with a huff and puff… Gets good reviews elsewhere, but sadly not from us..

My wife’s aunt and cousin enthused about this pub so we decided to have lunch with them on a Thursday in November. The pub is signposted from the main road and is down a narrow lane to Chidham with passing places at intervals. The car park at the back is not so large so many visitors seem to park in the village. Virtually every table was taken which is always a good sign for mid week dining. The four of us had a variety off of dishes and my seafood tagliatelle was delicious. We were very impressed with the speed of service from the two lovely ladies and lively atmosphere of the pub. The portions are quite large so if you have a smaller appetite we would recommend their small portion menu. My wife’s cousin recommended the mussels which were not on the menu the day we visited so we must return to try them. A very enjoyable lunch catching up with old friends too.

Even though it's not our 'local,' we wouldn’t go anywhere else! La Fish is our go-to family takeaway. We’ve been several times, and it never disappoints. The fish is always perfectly crispy and delicious, and the chips are spot-on – golden and fluffy on the inside. The kids love it too! Consistently amazing food and service – we can't recommend it enough!
