Hall & Woodhouse Portishead, Bristol in North Somerset

Had a stop over in the marina, went in for a bite to eat, some staff friendly others quite sharp and somewhat direct ( maybe a late night) meal and drink choices are good, however for me it’s way overpriced for what you get and quality of ingredients. I’m guessing it’s the location to the marina, shiny boats means high prices. Would I go back I’d certainly have a look round first but ultimately yes I would.

Booked a table for lunch on a Saturday but decided to sit in the bar area instead. Really helpful staff, good service, yummy food and great pub. Will definately be going back again! 😊

Absolutely awful if requiring gluten free food. Common sense has gone out of the window as apparently you can order a burger without the bun, but cannot order a steak frite without the ciabatta. My original order was accepted at the bar but then a member of staff came to the table and said I couldn't have the ciabatta less steak. The App he showed me was confusing to say the least and I had got to the inward screaming 'just give me food' stage and selected a salad. When it came, half the spinach was going off and should never have been served.

Sadly, I have to share a less favourable review of the Hall & Woodhouse in Portishead Marina today. My girlfriend and I visited to enjoy the 2 for 1 offer available for burgers on a Monday, which was initially denied on the basis it was a bank holiday, but eventually we were then refunded £17 to honour the offer after a review was mentioned. I was advised that offers can be withdrawn at any time. I hope stale buns were merely the coincidence that persuaded me to amend my review.

Would never normally write a negative review but this time it’s warranted. Table booked for a celebratory meal, last night. Firstly my daughter asked for an orange juice & lemonade & was told that they didn’t serve that! No onion rings or breaded mushrooms available, I don’t understand how that was allowed to happen but accepted it & chose a different meal. When our food arrived, very overpriced burgers, the bun bases were inedible & the salad was quite clearly not fresh or washed as there actually was a small black bug moving on my plate. At this point I took my uneaten food up to the manager, at no point did I ask for my money back, nor was I offered it. All together not a good experience, a shame as H & W was definitely one of our favourite places to eat or just go for a drink but we will not be going again.

Only popped in for a quick drink, ended up eating there. Special offer on a Wednesday, burger and fries for £10.95 as opposed to £16.95, bacon and cheese were extra. Very fast service, friendly knowledgeable staff, dog friendly. Well worth a visit. Check out the offers on the boards outside. Please note I had eaten half my chips before taking the picture.

Rather trendy bar in a lovely location. Relaxed vibe and a good range of ales. Somewhere to go for a chilled afternoon, Sunday probably.

There was 20 of us eating, we had pre-ordered and all of our meals came out together and were delicious, our dedicated server Sara was amazing.

Been here a few times for food while passing through and never been disappointed ( roasts are lovely) staff we're friendly , and helpful with food allergies especially Marcus who guided me through what I could and couldn't eat off the menu and made me and my partner feel very welcomed. Will be visiting again for sure.

Great pub but the drinks are pricey

When you charge close to £20 for a burger, you set an expectation as to the quality of that burger. Unfortunately what was delivered fell far short of that expectation.

We ate really well! A very good chilicon carne and a great Mac&Cheese!! But the best thing was the service!!!!! Sarah took great care of us and gave us good advice! Thanks to her 😍

We ate here on Christmas Day and expected the place to be busy, but the food was on par with a school dinner and we had to ask for gravy on our roasts! We arrived at 14:30, paid at 18:15. We were only fortunate to have an outstanding server.

Went in Boxing Day mid dog walk for a few coffees and hot Chocs. The staff were miserable and surly, they were one hot chocolate short then argued the order. Literally dumped our drinks on a table next to us and told us to sort out our drinks outside. Coffees were nice though.

The team at Hall and Woodhouse are so kind and welcoming, I thoroughly recommend a visit if you are in the area. It is an ideal place to meet for coffee, work in a different environment for a change or hold a meeting or class there.

This is a lovely place to go on the Marina. I tend to go during the week and it is quite quiet. At usually shuts about 22:00. Good range of drinks available and reasonably priced

What a wast of money, they should be ashamed of themselves, had to ask 3 times for them to put serviettes in the table, no knifes and forks, staff are thick. I'm a local do not waste your money here it was embarrassing I was entertaining a guest, completely embarrassed by the quality of food service etc we ended up going to a different pub after we had eaten and spent 250 quid. Even though it's local won't be going here again.

We stopped off for a drink here during a freezing winter walk around the marina. We didn’t fancy drinking inside because so we headed out to sit under the heaters with our dog. A staff member followed us out and made sure the heaters were on and gave our dog a biscuit! This had the right effect on us. Thank you kind man!

Really like this place. Been here a few times. Staff are friendly, coffee and food are both good. It's also dog friendly, so your furry friend is welcome.

When I called to book, I was bluntly told they could cater for people with allergies, that the people in my party would need to pick appropriate food from the menu!!! I didn't receive the booking confirmation, had to chase it up! Parking was very limited. At the meal, the food was very average, the service was slow & the staff looked well & truly fed up. One place I WON'T be returning to!!!

My local pub where I have been many times! The quiz on a Tuesday night is good fun, although it can get busy so you might need to book in advance. Great range of drinks and level of service from the staff. Food is very good too, but my only slight complaint would be the portions are a little bit small.

Food came out cold but once it was zapped in the microwave was super hot!!! Not impressed with that. Medium glass of wine £11 that’s expensive!!

We bought a few drinks here during Portishead arts festival. I was told I could have a beer in a plastic glass to go outside(fine) but no take out coffee as no cups available. I then got told off for standing near the bar chatting to a friend and "not making it clear I'd been served " I was quite upset until I realised the rudeness of the bar staff was the talk of everyone outside...at least we were able to laugh about who'd had the worst service. They clearly didn't want/weren't expecting the extra custom from a fantastic event happening on their doorstep

Came for the £10 Sunday roast deal, left with a smile. Firstly let me comment on the service, barman was very friendly and took our orders cordially. Food came within 15 minutes but no quality spared! Obviously a popular Sunday dinner choice. We ordered the beef and chicken. Beef was as described, pink in colour and extremely soft. Chicken was great portion size and vegetable pairings were spot on. All for £10 each! These days you can’t get a baguette and a coffee for £10 but this filled us both up and was great value. Will be back.

Food took ages to arrive and what a disappointment when it did turn up. If that's the standard of cooking they deliver for the price they charge , it's no wonder the restaurants and cafés in the High St were so much busier.

We arrived at 10 am, and we were seated as a group. The place was quiet. From ordering to arrival the food took about 1 hour. Our group had a dairy allergy and requested an adapted full English with removing items that can't be eaten. I'm still happy to pay the same price. But I was told no, she couldn't do that this meaning she could not eat anything. My mum had scrambled eggs on toast, which were cold. My poached eggs on toast were just OK, and the butter served had started to melt. The rest of our friends had various breakfast requests, and the bacon was overcooked and hard. The overall experience was poor, and given the prices you pay, I would not be expecting such poor service and poor food quality. Edit Thanks for the response, which doesn't really address all of my concerns raised. For me and my mum and fellow guests, the food quality and service were poor, and you chose not to acknowledge this!

Very disappointed from the beginning. Ordered 2 drinks and offered to pay with cash but was told it's card only, I find this appalling as I don't carry a card,so had to rely on my friend to pay. No reason for this except making us cash users feel inferior, as we have to argue to toss as to why . Will never ever go back there again. The prices are also extortionate.

A bit pricey but super nice location

Very disappointing place, terrible value and mediocre food. A burger which I would not pay more than 10 pounds for was 17. 'Chorizo bites' ordered as a starter came with the mains and was a few bits of chorizo from a fridge packet for 5 pounds! Unbelievably poor value considering aqua and other much better places nearby.

Great location and a warm welcome for our table of 8. We arrived from Bristol, Stroud, Wotton and local and really looking forward to a catch up over breakfast. Two of the party on gluten and dairy free - asked to check a tablet for food choices (tablet was covered in dirt and needed to be cleaned, by one of us before use). Dairy free guest was refused food before noon! Tried to work around menu offer but still refused. Four cooked breakfast brought out after a long wait. Bacon was hard/brittle and cold. Toast hard and cold. One guest ordered scrambled egg on toast and was embarrassed with the portion size. Coffee was the only thing which was nice, deemed acceptable. I wish l had never organised to meet here and eat. Very disappointed.

My favourite place for a glass( or 2) of bubbles. Wonderful staff add to a fantastic atmosphere will food to compliment them both.

Very poor customer service the manager on duty was following me back to the table and been incredibly rude and shauting at me on front of everyone ! due to the fact that they not accept American express card payments and I had no other card to pay with and ended up paying by cash £15.10 exactly what the bill was. The cash was refused and put at front of me outside where I had a drink with a friend. I would not recommend this place ever. When the bussines refuses cash payments it have to accept all cards payments!

Sunday roast was pretty poor. Hardly any meat and drowned in watery gravy, would not recommend. Service was good though but atmosphere was lacking.

Menu was drastically reduced and had to choose from what was left in stock, which wasn't much ! Wish we had gone to KFC which was my first choice !!!

OK ill start with the positives.. Great location and pleasant staff...but honestly not the best roast. Was told 45 min wait but thus was so kitchen wasn't under pressure. We got served our meal within 15mins... I'd have waited 45 though to be served a hot roast with lovely thick gravy not the watery stock we had. One carrot and one parsnip .. meat was gristle...that's the beef I had chicken.. should have had stuffing.. when I mention this I was asked if I'd like some so thought wh not.. honestly .. they may as well just not bothered... it was the size of a 50p... I laughed and was told they'd run out!! Really?? This was only 12.30... I have to say I did give an extra star for the Yorkshire pudding.. that was lovely. If they gave more veg..thicker gravy it would have been a decent meal..

Just had a lovely meal at H & W Portishead The staff were so accommodating and attentive Harrison was extremely helpful and Marcus came out to us to explain that our meal was effected by a delivery issue, but to be honest it was delicious. Really enjoyed our meal thank you 😀

Food was brilliant, great beers, really nice spot on the side of the marina. Appreciate it was a monday night but packing up loudly from 2130 was a bit full on, fully appreciating that there was only three tables in the pub. Would still head back no bother

We had a lovely meal here, celebrating an early Father's day for 3 generations of our family. I would especially like to commend the excellent service we received from our delightful server Anna. She really went above and beyond and deserves a special mention for the way she looked after us; what a lovely young lady, she is a credit to the team.

Lovely modern pub by the marina. Not the nicest view unfortunately as it looks over a car park before the marina and there isn't much of a garden, but there is enough to find a seat in the sun and the pub itself is a pleasant place to sit. The bar staff are friendly and helpful and prices are as reasonable as you can get these days. Vegetarian food options aren't too bad and the ones I've had are tasty.

Amazing service from Marcus today, really attentive and nothing was too much trouble. Food was fresh and brilliant quality.

I cannot speak highly enough of Marcus our host. Very friendly and welcoming, a credit to H&W. The menu was well catered for, reasonably priced and good portions. The venue itself was clean, light and airy with a vibrant buzz about the place.

Harrison, Emma, Marcus and Michael were excellent, food was superb and the new menu is certainly worth a look

I had arranged a buffet lunch for Bristol Fencing Club. There were 19 of us booked in. The new menu had just come out and there was more than a bit of a mix up with communication, timing and supply of food. The manager who contacted me was very apologetic and genuinely concerned. He assured me that we would have a good time. He was not wrong! His solution was a brilliant one and more than compensated for the mix up. The food we ate was fabulous and Sara C looked after us incredibly well. I would like to thank all the staff at Hall & Woodhouse Portishead for looking after us so well, for not rushing us out of the door and being polite and caring.

Went there to meet family at midday and ordered two shandies and a pint. Bill came up to £17. Found out that they charged us the FULL price of a pint for shandies. Not impressed. Rip offs. And they don't tell you that either when you order.

No No No ! Staying locally came for a mid afternoon drink the barman thought he was being amusing when in fact he was being rude and insulting. Beer choice isn't in our top five but was fine for what it was. Came back for snack lunch (why oh why?) a couple of days later, he had steak ciabatta, it was about 2/3 size expected but was ok. The cauliflower "wings" were inedible, the cauliflower was mush and the batter flavourless and over greasy, cheap frozen rubbish.

The service was good and the waitress was happy to help and very attentive. The food was tasty and had reasonable portion sizes. The beef burger was slightly pink and I would have preferred it cooked for longer however this is personal preference. The prices of the food are on the higher side however not unreasonable. I would visit again and recommend to friends and family.

Exceptional Service..... We went to H&W this evening with my mother who is elderly and using a mobility scooter . Simon and his team went out of their way to look after her every need and make things easy for her, clearing a space for her scooter , opening doors for her etc etc . Simon even went upstairs to meet her from the lift and show her the top floor.The team made a great effort to make my parents ( who are visiting the area ) welcome and I'm really grateful for this., Really enjoyed the food and ambience too . Keep up the good work.Thanks Simon. They will be back next time they visit !

Most expensive place in Portishead for food and drink. Average food, average service, stopped selling nuts & DONT TAKE CASH. Will no longer be visiting.

Beautiful location and super dog friendly!

We went to Hall & Woodhouse for a meal with friends last night. Between four of us the bill came to just over £240, which would have been fine had the food and service been good. Service was so slow it was ridiculous, there were 5 or 6 tables in the restaurant for most of the time we were there, the wait for food was around 50 minutes after we ordered. Our main courses were barely average, I then had cheese and biscuits which comprised of four very small pieces of cheese and was supposed to be for two people. The Stilton was brown, other cheeses were dry. At one stage we managed to get a waiters attention to order drinks, he turned to leave after we ordered one and had to be called back to take the rest of the order. One member of waiting staff appeared to go for a break mid-service at around 8:30. The staff were flustered for no reason and gave the impression that they didn’t want to be there and took no pride in their job. I get the impression they just need a job and that’s it. I would expect better service at a McDonald’s. Being local, we’ve visited a number of times over the years, but the last two visits have shown how things have gone downhill. Now I wish we’d checked recent reviews before booking. With other restaurants in the area revamping and improving menus and service etc, Hall & Woodhouse really needs to up its game if they want to keep attracting customers.

Busy Sunday, Order our food & drinks. Waitress came back to say they had only 3 portions of pork left at 1315. 5 roast dinners took over an hour to come. Cauliflower cheese never arrived after asking twice. The service was very slow and they seemed to only have 1 chef. Staff were not communicating with each other about items on the menu that were not available. Food itself was nice if a little cold, portions were different on each plate (some had 5 potatoes, some had 2 tiny ones.) We don’t mind a wait on food or drink if they are understaffed but this could have been communicated with us at the start of the meal.

Nice design of the restaurant, but bar staff are rude. Worst pint of Guinness I've ever had by a mile. Highly recommend walking down the road to the spoons where everything is a quarter of the price.

The roast was excellent - I have to say the service was really really good there. The team were friendly, chatty, offered water for the dog without being asked. I would definitely visit again

We ate here for Mother's day as a group of 10. We had the roast dinners and the pie, and everyone enjoyed their meal. All staff were friendly and helpful and helped to resolve the one minor issue with one meal very quickly (one roast dinner was missing the stuffing). I had read some negative reviews from some recent visits, but certainly had a good meal and I would definitely come here again.

Was recommended to go here drove from taunton for Sunday 02/03/2023 lunch three of us had Sunday roast the worst we ever had meat dry tasteless and gravy like dish water. I party had fish on ricotta fish was dry overdone and ricotta sticky.... we were very disappointed as the venue is wonderful. I feel the food needs to be done better and the price for what the portion was is really a bad second blow not worth the money at all. I also think the food was left under the lights to long drying it out. Sorry we had to do a review like this but you need to know what you serving.

We ordered a Hake & Risotto at £21+ it was dried out and unpleasant. 3 beef roasts tough, dry and full of sinue. Watery gravy with no depth of flavour. Very disappointed 😞

The worst Sunday roast I've ever had! Everything undercooked, except the meat, which was dry and tasteless. The slimy chicken and dry pork, lack of veg and watery gravy was astounding given the prices. Kids enjoyed their kids meals at least. Genuinely surprised how awful it was. Won't be back for food again.

Unfortunately I really wanted to love this place but the food let it down and this is the second time I’ve come here and left feeling this way. For starts, the company really needs to either reduce the price of their dishes OR they need to up the quality of the food they are serving and make the portion sizes bigger. The major let down for me was being served mouldy raspberries on my pudding and someone else who ordered the same pudding too. I also noticed that they had all been placed mould facing down so it wasn’t noticeable until I moved them… now does that mean I was served mouldy raspberries on purpose!? I don’t know, but the kitchen staff should be doing much better. I will say we were given x2 £10 vouchers at the end as an apology.

Lovely coffee, comfy chairs and great service. Love dogs too, we take one very well behaved and I think it’s her favourite place in Portishead, she adores the treats!
