Went in Sunday lunchtime for a drink. There were two people at the bar sniggering with the lady behind the bar. It was unclear if they were sniggering at us but i can't think why they would. Very uncomfortable 'welcome' We then tried to look at the menu and were sharply told it was the wrong menu because its a Sunday menu. We said we were just looking and the person snapped back ....well the menu changes all the time. We left!

Didn't eat but a lot cleaner and fresh than last visit New peoplenow, used to be a great place wish them good luck and will be back to try the menu

It was a delight to go for a drink with friends, to The Half Moon at Stoke St Mary last evening. Immediately we entered there was a real pub feel and buzz to the place i have not experienced for over 20 years. Musicians were setting up in one room for a session, friends and families were being served dinner and the bar had a generous gathering of locals. We were greeted by Willow, the smiling and welcoming landlady who drew pints of Otter from the barrel. She has been at the pub for just over 3 months and it was good to see the support from both locals and those further afield. I was impressed by the full and varied menu, along with a good range of beers and ciders. We will definitely be back for a meal in the very near future!

A great pub! Under new management. It’s full of character and in a lovely location. They have plans to update the decor. We wish them well. Rural communities need big hearted pubs like The Half Moon.

Nice pint of otter & some background live folk music. Food looked good. Will be back.

We attended the "Curry Night" last night and it was absolutely fabulous. A definite 10/10 The service was great and a lovely atmosphere too. We will definitely be returning

Lovely roast and pudding for Mothers Day

8 of us turned up, at lunchtime, unannounced and had a pint and ordered baguettes. We were warmly welcomed. As there were so many of us it took a while for the food to arrive but when it did it was very good. The baguettes were full and accompanied by crisps of your choice and the usual small salad. The beer was also very acceptable. The decor needs attention but we will return, well worth a visit.

This could be such a great pub given its location. Clearly needs a refurb and some tlc. Landlady was friendly though. This is probably the only pub i have ever been in that does"nt offer real ale !! Unbeleivable. What really lets it down is the amount of feral kids running around unsupervised. The parents and staff do nothing. Sadly, this is happening more and more these days but its particuarly bad here.

Looked really nice from the outside but on entering the bar was full of shouting men, the setting very basic and run down while the menu very limited (no starters or desserts, no kids meals despite what'son the website). Owner apologised for not having any red wine and kindly offered complimentary g&ts which was appreciated and the food was hot but the overall experience very disappointing. Will not be revisiting.

Superb! We arrived at the pub on our tractors as we were attending a local country show t at the nearby racecourse. We rang ahead and made a reservation for 14 or so covers, all no problem and dealt with efficiently and politely. Arriving at the pub, we parked our tractors int he field adjacent to the car park, to be immediately greeted by the lovely landlady who was keen to take photos of the tractors. We were soon inside the cosy pub, it was busy with a great atmosphere, we took to our table after ordering drinks at the bar, all served very quickly. Nice selection of beers, ales and ciders. Food orders were taken swiftly, everything came out at the right time and all was great, we definitely made the right decision to come here for our evening out. Clean plates speak volumes! We look forward to seeing you all again in December at our next event 🤠 keep up the great work all.

We had heard that The Half Moon at Stoke St Mary were offering take aways, so we decided to order Fish & Chips. The food was cooked fresh on arrival, so we enjoyed a quick beer. The Fish & Chips were absolutely delicious & I can't rate them highly enough. Also, the Irish curry sauce was soo good. We will definitely be returning for the same. Great portions, great service. I cannot recommend this place enough for its Roast Lunch. Honestly, the best I’ve had. It was as though it had been made just for me. So fresh and an amazing choice of vegetables with a very generous amount of meat. And I just love a pub that gives you extra gravy without you asking! Lovely attentive young staff too. A real pleasure to share the garden with three very handsome horses. See you soon peeps. Thank you

We had an excellent lunch here today, everything cooked perfectly and very generous portions plus sharing dishes of mixed fresh vegetables, cauliflower cheese and dauphinoise potatoes. Very happy to recommend and will certainly return.

Initial call wasn’t answered, so logged into ‘their’ web site, followed instructions to book and sent confirmation to our fellow diners. Who rang back wondering why we were booking somewhere in Birmingham! Second call was answered, booking for following day accepted and explanation that their website link isn’t theirs! Lunch was okay: two very good gammon steaks, two so so veggie lasagne with strange pasta tomato salad side, and a steak pie devoured with gusto by a 12 year old who scoffs anything! Nice surroundings, friendly lady management and young waitress; somewhat offhand bar staff.

Thank you for a lovely roast on Fathers day! My husband enjoyed his lovely lunch. After we sat in the lively beer garden listening to the birds and watching the horses go by, which our children loved. The waitresses were amazing, really smiley and attentive, lovely atmosphere. Will definitely be back soon 😃

This was just an awful day out landlady just completely rude and just thought about her pocket !!!!!! Website landlady said was wrong and she need to look into it so all prices was nothing to do with this pub 🤷🏻‍♀️ complete mess !!!!!!!!!! Also you have to PAY FOR WATER !!!!! Unbelievable so all she said was that we have to pay her water bill some how 😯 I couldn’t believe this. Also a sticky toffee pudding is not a sticky toffee pudding it’s a Chocolate Jaffa sponge pudding which they class a a sticky toffee. I will not be coming back, such a shame a it’s a lovely pub but awful attitude and service !!!

This pub was a beacon of light during our (me and my friends desperately needing a pint on a Sunday evening whilst travelling home) darkest hour. It’s also beautiful and there was a pony in the garden. Xxx

Friendly staff, clean. Toilets clean, nice hand wash and hand cream supplied too which was nice. Only had a couple pints but enjoyed my visit. It’s been my local for years but this was my first visit under new management.

Never been before, after a drink outside in the garden we popped inside for beer battered cod, fries, peas and tartare sauce, oh my goodness what a lovely meal. I am fussy over tartare sauce, I like it 'tart' not mild and this was lush . The cod and batter was amazing. Bit of banter with the landlady and others made the early evening a great one. We called a day ahead to ask if there was space for a large group for Sunday dinner to finish off a hen weekend! Hayley kindly booked us in with no problems!! Warm, cosy and very friendly pub. The roast dinner was perfect, plentiful, hot and delicious!! I had the roast beef which was served a little pink in the middle. Very tender meat. Loads of veg and choice of potatoes, plenty of gravy. Nothing was too much trouble for the group. A few also had desserts (I didn’t as I had a long journey North) but I wished I had as they looked insane!! Sticky toffee pudding, crumble and cheesecake. Perfect end to a perfect weekend. A lovely drive to the pub and not far from the M5 so it was easy for us to get on track and head home. It’s also a dog friendly pub! Thank you Hayley and the team for squeezing us in and for making us feel so welcome and full up! Highly recommend!!

Checked earlier in the week that they were doing lunches today,we drove 42 miles to visit the village church to tend family graves only to be told by the land ladies rather sullen son that there was no food, Mum/chef had gone shopping!! Never again.

Very nice lunch . Just like homemade .Locals seemed friendly ,and pleasant staff. All meals enjoyed ,and delivered very close together ,so no waiting for the last lunhes ,to arrive . This makes dining out better ,and more enjoyable .

Popped into the Half Moon Inn on our way home from a refreshing long walk so had worked up a appetite, didn't notice the times of service which had just ended the time we got there but the lady kindly still offered us a roast which was delicious! Brilliant customer service and yummy food! Thank you.....

Beautiful Christmas meal for a fussy party of 26. Food is obviously hand prepared by somebody who knows what they are doing! Fantastic baked Camembert starter, times to perfection. Beautiful tender moist turkey with flavour, side veg was perfect, all the trimmings too. My desert was the Bailey's Mousse, but everybody commented on the high quality of the food. Friendly helpful staff both at table & the bar, and even some spontaneous Live music from one of the guests afterwards. A perfect evening out, highly recommended. If I could change one thing, put the gravy separate on a plated meal. 5 starts very well earned, will certainly return, thank you 🤗🤗

Would not recommend this pub, would give it a zero if I could , it’s under new management and have been in a few times for drinks. We Attended today Saturday Lunchtime, to be greeted with a sour faced young man behind the bar and no atmosphere! It’s our sons 18th birthday and we made a joke about having his first pint, he wasn’t at all interested, no smile nothing We took some menus to have lunch a party of 7 and a dog and in the current climate you would think they would want the business. On leaving the bar area to sit outside I noticed dog mess on the floor in the main bar, knowing it wasn’t our dog as she was on a lead and hadn’t been in that area, we picked up the mess and the look on the landlady/Cooks face made us very uncomfortable and she rudely said she had cleaned and it wasn’t there this morning and it’s only been our dog in the pub. We picked the mess up as a kind thing to do and had no thanks just a dirty look We visited another local pub for lunch which was amazing and even bought balloons out with happy birthday written on his plate We found out the owners of the half moon own a dog so maybe it had messed in the pub, pub isn’t overly clean so god knows what the food is like if the cook also cleans Will never visit again. Disgusting place and the Land lady needs to leave any customer facing roles

A new venture for the owners, we had an enjoyable meal with reasonable service. The owner discussed current hospitality shortages, but this is a great location and once established should be very successful.

We have visited this lovely traditional pub many times over the years and love everything about it! Amanda has now taken on this pub and she is so welcoming. We rang this afternoon, to ask if the fish pie was on the 'specials" menu for tonight and although the initial answer was no, Amanda agreed to make it!! Wow, now that is impressive!! We arrived ved as planned and I can honestly say, it was the best fish pie, I have ever eaten!! A last minute find for a Sunday lunch, we were squeezed in. A very lovely warm atmosphere generated by all the staff, whoo made us feel at home. Thanks. The food was a set roast which was perfect for a Sunday, lovely fresh veggies complemented a well cooked lamb or beef main. As a new business they are doing well. A good typical selection of puddings finished of a lovely meal.

Think twice about eating here. I visited tonight and the burger was awful and my daughter and I did not finish them. I know it is pub grub, but bookers burgers that my dog might have turned his nose up at, twelve chips, onion rings with a thred of onion and some salad - which was nice, is not worth what they charge. I told the waitress I would go in to have a word, as I did not want to do so in front of my daughter and when I did, I got the, well you ate some of it and did'nt complain from the guy behind the bar who had a pretty poor attitude. The clientele was also slightly dodgy, quite a few lads with their super charged £500.00 cars turning up, but I suppose they can easily drink drive from there if they live on that side of town. The Half Moon was once a lovely pub, a bit limited menu wise, but warm and inviting and with good people running it. I would recommend you give it a miss based upon what we ate and saw tonight and the barman's attitude.

Fairly average food and selection of drinks. Fine for a short stop just off the motorway on the way down to Devon, but not somewhere we'd go out of our way for.

Dog friendly. Nice locals. Beer is good (I'm told) and changes often. They wheel in a huge TV to show the football. Loos are clean enough. Can't complain! Not eaten there before, so can't comment.

My only good point. My meal was tasty.. Chips were weirdly cut! Came in last weekend, first time ever! Party of 30 people. We had booked in advance. We all had pretty easy meals, starters and main courses. So the pub was empty (and freezing), I’m thinking great, the food will arrive quickly, we will have excellent service and the owners will be very attentive! Wrong! The starters came out promptly (only about 5 of us ordered starters) but then one was missing.. I go to the bar, say we’re are missing one starter, landlord goes off to tell the kitchen (no apology) when it did come out the waitress apologised. Then it’s time for the main courses. First lot comes out (about 4 mains) 10 minutes later the next lot, this continued till we had all been served but by the time the last lot had their meals the people that were served first had finished eating, and again there was one main missing (for the same person that had a late starter)... so I finish my meal, go to the bar, tell the landlord, we’re missing a burger, all he says is oh right, then walks off! 15/20 minutes later the last meal comes out, everyone else had finished eating. No one ordered pudding as there was a huge birthday cake.. we carry on nicely with our evening, chatting away! The night comes to an end, people are leaving (not all at once, dribs and drabs throughout the night) we each tell the landlord what we had, pay our part of the bill, go on our way. Monday comes round, talk to friends that came out for the meal to find out the last person to pay was over charged by £16 because not only did the starter and main not come out when it was supposed to but they landlord had added it onto the bill as extras. It was explained to the landlord that they had already been ordered but forgotten about, that it wasn’t an extra order and that those meals had been paid for (by me)! He proceeds to get upset and say well someone has to pay it.. again we tried to explain it’s BEEN PAID but he wasn’t having any of it! So now my friend is £16 out of pocket. Not a very good experience at all for a first visit. I understand that we had a large party, however, they knew we were coming. It wasn’t very organised at all. It’s a shame really.. will not be going back

Looks like new owners, we ate there with friends this week. The menu has changed and wasn't very pleasing to the eye? It took over an hour to bring the food out on the table, as the pub was empty apart from us, we also had to return 2 of the meals as they weren't good. Obviously the pub is struggling. We shall not be going back again in the future. Pity this pub used to be so good. 😞.

This is the first time and the last we will be visiting this once lovely county pub, I feel that this review needs to be done, please avoid and save your money, I have never in my life complained about a meal that I have had I’d rather not go back than make a fuss, but tonight was an exception , it was the worst lasagne I have ever had tasteless the salad on the plate was so old and limp even the local rabbits wouldn’t eat it, well the only thing on the plate edible was the garlic bread, and that’s saying something, our friends meal was only half dished out apparently the chef forgot to put the rest on the plate, the service was appalling the waitress needs some training on people skills, not what , please may I take your order , it was what do you want, also we waited ages between courses, hence we didn’t stay for pudding, please save your money and avoid, avoid,

Friendly bar staff, decor is a bit tired and plain though.

This used to be a regular pub for me and I have reviewed it before and given it 5 stars. Unfortunately things have gone downhill. The people who ran it from 2014/5 to early 2018 were doing a fantastic job - it's such a shame they were forced out. The food was excellent - particularly the Sunday lunch. I had hoped that the new owners would adopt a similar formula but sadly not. They've turned it into your bog standard pub which is stuck in the past - you could predict the menu without seeing it - ham egg & chips, lasagne, gammon etc and the dreaded carvery on a Sunday. Boring and unimaginative. That sort of food was ok in the 1980s/90s but times have changed and people (I don't think I'm the only one!) expect more for our money. That sort of food is not worth travelling for when you can cook that sort of thing at home for a fraction of the price. We went on a Saturday night at about 8pm and it was dead. No atmosphere at all. I don't like writing negative reviews but it's such a shame that what was a fantastic country pub has been turned into such an average pub. I would be surprised if this pub lasts more than a year in its current format. I for one will be driving that bit further and going to The Farmers Arms in West Hatch where the food and atmosphere are excellent and worth paying for.
