This cafe used to be a nice place to pop in for a coffee or a meal. I popped in for the first since December 2019, I used to go fairly regularly. What a disappointment. Service was poor, staff didn't know what "half" meant but was fully ready to charge me for a pint and did so with no apology. Returned to my table to tell me that the chef had just started cooking for the day and the squid that I had ordered wasn't available and that I should come to the bar for refund. I wasn't offered an apology and when I asked whether it might be considerate to offer me an alternative, she looked at me like I was weird and yes she would do so but " you need to get a refund first". Upon receiving my refund another member of staff ( the manger I think) asked if I wanted anything else, I declined and explained that my vibe had been broken and he wasn't particularly bothered as to why. Three issues with my order, charged for a pint, when I clearly asked for a half. Rough staff service and less than considerate customer care. As I have said, I have been to this establishment many times so I feel that I am in a position to judge. I given a two star rating because the chips I eat there didn't give me stomach ache...

I have membership here and its clear to see they have not got one decent digital projector in any of the screens. You can see pixels everywhere. Most obvious as the credits start where you should have crisp edges on the text but you can clearly see pixelation. Any straight edged object has a staggered / stepped effect when at an angle. This makes the whole movies blurred and adds 'noise'. Very noticeable in scenes with lots of detail where so much seems to be missing or just hard to make out the detail. Sit right at the back to minimise this. My tv at home has a better picture.

I would not eat here as the staff are in a dispute, as with all Picturehouse cinemas, over not getting paid properly and not having the trade union recognised, and sacking trade unionists.

I ordered Korean chicken, coleslaw and fries. The chicken was slightly burnt deep fried chicken smothered in spicy, very salty sauce you can buy from the local Asian shops. It was far from Korean and far from edible. Very disappointing. I won't even start with the coleslaw...

It took more than fifteen minutes to get three drinks, and when they arrived the Hot Chocolate was luke warm. After the choclolate was returned, another two were presented, which were both hot, but now long after we had arrived. If you can't make something, don't put it on the menu.

I got there early to have lunch before a film. I ordered beans on toast from a dopey fella behind the counter, and that's fine I needed to wake up to, but when I got the beans they were disgusting. 'Home made' beans should be great, these tasted like someone had scraped out the bottom of a load of random spice jars, mixed it with some random hard beans, and left it out for a few days. Poor.

I go here quite regularly given the close proximity to work and my regular trips to the cinema. They have a good varied menu and it's always a solid choice - there's a mixture of small plates and bigger meals. It's gets busy especially on weekend nights so make sure you leave plenty of time if you are going into the cinema. Although they will box up your food and let you take it into the film if need be. Picturehouse Members get 10% discount.

I can honestly say I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to Hackney Picturehouse! I had some food before going in to watch the film, the portion size was very generous! The quality of food was also good.I would recommend the Picturehouse to anyone who values their evenings out as it was a truly enjoyable experience.

Fantastic seats that recline back, very nice posh pop corn on offer perfect with a double g&t - what a treat! The nibbles down stairs in the bar are very nice and good home wine. Great space to hand out with mates, well worth making the effort to make a cinema trip hat bit more lux.

My boyfriend and I have been here twice now and we will definitely become members soon! The vibe is so different from the theaters I'm used to - in such a good way! There's a full bar in the lobby and you can bring all of your drinks into the theater. They have all the normal movie theater snacks, along with some burgers, etc. I have yet to eat here (other than popcorn!) but will definitely try something in the near future. The seats are so comfortable and there's even one theater called the Lounge where there are seats that you can basically lay down in. This is my go-to theater hands down, makes going to the movies such a fun experience!

Came here after the cinema food look amazing but is without taste on the whole. First time I have ever had sweet potatoes that didn't actually taste of anything. The wrap was 95% coriander 5% chicken off cut. Let's not even discuss the prices. Wish we had grossed the road and gone to the chicken shop. My friend ate was was possibly the smallest burger known to mankind. The tomatoe in the burger was actually bigger than the burger. Let's not mention the staff our food did 2 laps of the seating area before it was actually served as the vacant look on the waiter's face wasn't just a look it summed up his actual ability. The only saving grace was the brownies but at nearly £4 per slice I don't think so...

Went in here for brunch after some shopping. They serve brunch till 4pm so a good choice for me. I didn't really look at the menu properly just ordered the brunch and I was pleasantly surprised when it came as it was a far cry from the usual. A very healthy option with a kind of bubble and squeak with veg and proper home made spicy beans in tomato sauce, grilled flat mushroom and grilled tomatos with herbs. All very fresh tasting and healthy. We bought some of the lovely popcorn they sell too for later. A very nice place to eat with a great variety of cakes, teas, drinks etc. Nice helpful staff too.

First time visit on Saturday 2nd Jan for the 6.30pm screening of Star Wars, as a birthday treat. 2 minutes into the film and the projector cuts out. Aloof staff member casually informs us they will try for 5 mins to fix problem, but it is likely the screening will be cancelled. It is clear he is well practiced in this drill. He informs us that we will be entitled to a refund, in such a manner like this was a gesture of their goodwill. Not prepared to queue with 500 other people for an immediate refund, I ask staff if I can come back for the refund the next day; I am reassured this is fine. I return Monday only to be told by the Manageress that they cannot issue refunds on tickets for a previous date from the box office. But they will take my details - which they will email to another party - who will then phone me to issue the refund. The next day I get the call - and I'm happy to give my long card number and expiry date - but then he asks for my 3 digit security number!! Why is this required? I refuse. Extremely dodgy. He then says the refund has gone through nonetheless. I am gracious. Needless to say I will not be visiting that shambolic pit again!

On several occasions I've experienced hipster sloppy service where you are made to feel grateful to actually get served but today was my last visit. As usual, the queue was large at the food/bar counter due to the usual slow service and appeared not to have any start, or any end, or any logic. We joined the queue behind two men who walked straight in, walked straight up to the counter and were served immediately. Ahead of about 15 others already there. When my friend was at the counter after the two men were served she was barked at very loudly and informed there was a queue and was publicly chastised. I have to say, if that's the case, how come the two late comers were served first? Inept. Rude. Thanks but no thanks. We left. If you want your customers to queue, put a queue system in place. If you want to look like a bar then have the skill to manage who arrives first and last. Don't just serve other late comers in your own incarnation and more importantly, don't be rude.

This multi-screen cinema in the centre of Hackney on Mare Street has smart and modern decor and facilities and comfortable auditoria, plenty of break-out space to chill out whilst waiting for your film, and a busy but good quality ground-floor cafe, with a bar on the top floor that can be hired out. Great cakes if you're not too late in the day! Not a cheap experience but generally reasonable prices.

A caffee place inside an independent cinema. The food is very good, not the cheapest. I love the cakes and hot drinks. The staff is very friendly and seats are very comfy, although they do not actually have their own wifi - you have to use the borough's wifi, and this connection sometimes is no good. The cinema has a few blockbusters, as well as independent films and a variety of events for a slight cheaper price than other bigger cinemas. If you are a london resident and go to cinema often I advice you to get a membership (you can get free tickets and food monthly), especially if you are a student! (£10 for 2 tickets on membership). Also sign up for the preview nights, where they show new blockbusters for students to watch (for free) and review them! The cinema room is pretty comfy, and mostly adults come here so you do not need to worry with people talking during the film.

My mum and I were at the Picturehouse for a mental health event and decided to have some food beforehand. Since mum drinks no alcohol, we asked if there were any non-alcoholic beer and it seemed there wouldn't be. I would have thought that a bar in such a forward thinking picturehouse would be stocking lots of alcohol free options. I had the halloumi and the hummus, both very nice. They have a very nice selection of normal beer and I had a nice Meantime. We found the staff to be a little sleepy but very polite and nice, especially the two boys working up in the attic (though they make a very weak coffee!)

When this place opened it had about 1 option for a vegetarian. This has now changed to 2! The staff behind the counter are lazy and rude. Forgetting items, taking their time making tea/coffee, not cleaning tables. For a trendy place, this has a lot of improving to do. The cakes are all on display so everyone can sneeze and cough all over them. You have to take your own coffees back to the table. When we left the place, there were 15 people waiting to make an order, all because the 2 members of staff were making a latte!

This place could be so goo as there are not enough decent eateries in this part Of hackney unfortunately it let itself down again and again.... The staff seem to have the attitude that serving customers is bothersome and interrupts their conversations. They are verging on rude and have a can't be bothered attitude to say the least. It's as if they think the job is below them or something....I ordered a beef burger which the menu states is 38 day aged rare breed chuck and comes with twice cooked chips. What arrived was a dry taste less burger with frozen chips, if they were double cooked it made no difference to the taste. The slice of tomato was tasteless water tomato and they really shouldn't have bothered. The burger didn't really taste of anything at all and really needed some basic seasoning. My dining partner ordered a lib sandwich which he liked.Overall the owners of this place need to pull their finger out!!!

The great thing about this place is it's huge so I can easily get a buggy inside. It's also child friendly and the atmosphere is relaxed. The bad thing is that there's one or two members of staff, one in particular who always seems to be hungover. Majority of times I have been there, I have had silence, sullen service, they have forgotten my tea bringing me cups and an empty tea pot, bread with no butter, soup with no spoon, forgetting drinks, forgetting my cake, so I have to get up and down and queue and whinge which I don't like doing. The food is over priced, the breakfasts for vegetarians are terrible - who wants chips with your fried veggie breakfast? It has the potential to be so much better than what it is. Decent size portions, non hungover / friendly staff who don't have to be reminded to bring the whole of your order would be an improvement, but I have gone back too many times now to waste more money.

I went to the hackney Picturehouse with a group of friends to have some breakfast last weekend. The choice is good, but the food is not. I had eggs royale with two rock solid eggs inside. Everything is meant to be organic, but they don’t even serve fresh orange juice… Overall the food is ok and my friends dishes were as well, however the worst thing about the Hackney Picturehouse is it’s staff. So rude, unknowledgeable and completely inflexible. I love the Picturehouse as a cinema, but most definitely will not be returning there to eat.

We were going to see a worthy film at The Hackney Picturehouse so decided to eat at the cinema’s restaurant. This is quite functional looking but spacious. The staff are very willing and friendly. The menu is quite varied, ranging from fast foods to the day’s specials. We had some quite ambitious slow-cooked dishes – pork belly, lamb roasted in a Mediterranean fashion and a number of smaller platters along with some chips. There is a well-stocked bar so really the place stands up as a lunch and dinner venue regardless of whether you are going to the cinema. Worth a visit!
