Gypsy Lane Chippery in Leicester

There will always be that one discussion point when talking about local chippies, and that is which is best! In my opinion, this family run chippy has been my go to since I was kid and it's been a family run since. Staff are always supper friendly and the portion sizes are spot on, with one of the biggest fishes you'll get from any chip shop. Although I am no longer local, I happily travel across town to get fish and chips from here, after trying several others local to me and being disappointed each time. Keep up the amazing work and food Danielle and Anton!

Good location , price is good & cooked freshed , atmospher is good & staff ' s are good & chatty & helpfull , & it ' s near for me too .

For me the best chips in Leicester. I'd not been for ages but when I walked in I was greeted like a regular and the owner even knew what my regular order was. Only wish I lived closer to go more regularly

Not sure how they have been awarded the best chippy. Ordered a small portion of fish and chips that was way more expensive than the rest. After long wait, the portion didn't represent value for money.

Ordered a mini cod as the large is too big for me, and I was not disappointed. The cod was cooked perfectly and the batter is nice and crispy, and the chips are to point too. I love these two Anton and Daniella aswell as the staff. Keep up the great work and service. That's why you won 2023 chip shop of the year. Cheers Lorenzo x

Old school fish and chips shop feeling, good people... but the fish had so much oil in it. On second time on role, I got that, and it feels sinking... chips are slightly undercooked... maybe there got a lot to do... I'll try it again cos of the atmosphere...

Perfectly cooked. How chippies used to be. Everything was fresh and tasty. The 2 ladies working this evening were super friendly. Service with a smile really stands out these days. It's refreshing. And to think we were gonna have vegetables for tea tonight! We will be back.

I am not from Leicester, but was told about this chip shop. A friend of mine who lives in Leicester recommended it. I have to say I was very impressed. Perfect cod and chips. The lady's working are very nice and chatty. Will definitely be back again when I am next in Leicester. The cod had lovely batter and I would recommend them if you want a good fish and chips meal. I also had a pukka chicken and mushroom pie which was good.

I used this chip shop many years ago but moved out of the area so changed chippy. Started going again recently and well worth the 10/15 min drive. The food is amazing, the value for money is very good too (I can’t see how anyone can eat a whole regular portion of their chips) Biggest freshest fish you will see in a chip shop. Doner kebab, I could only eat half of it! Absolutely massive and very tasty with no grease residue in the paper. Anton and his staff are always polite and quickly get through the queues. Use it once and you will be hooked.

I had a really bad experience today I seen on Facebook that this chippy was the best in the UK. So I have decided to take myself and my family to try it, we waited 30 minutes to be served. Food was packed up but not given to us for another 30 minutes as they were waiting for an item to cook. This condensation on the food wasn’t good. It was oily and so wet and soppy I wasn’t happy with how this one out of 10 I rate this chip shop a 2 honestly spent £30 and I couldn’t eat a bite of it. The chips were hard or soggy no in between.

I have eaten from this chip shop whenever I have visited Leicester over the last 30+ years & can easily vote for it being the best. My trip to Leicester is not complete if I have not had their fish & chips. They have maintained the quality. Highly recommend for good quality generous helping of fish & chips.

The best fish and chips I've had in the UK for years. The fish is fresh, flaky and seasoned correctly. The batter is crispy and not excessive.The chips were done just right. Could not fault anything. Have been dying to have a fish and chips since I arrived in UK, but normally it never fails to disappoint...so was putting it off. This was a chance encounter, wife was buying something nearby, and I spotted this place. Walked in, ordered and had a chat with the friendly owner. The food didn't take long, was well wrapped and was still hot when I reached home. They recently won an award for best chippy, and I'm not in the least surprised

Most of the time the fish and chips are top quality. On the rare occasion the chips may be a little odd (gritty) but thankfully that's rare. People come from far to get food from here, with good reason

Just visited here as was in the area and did a Google search. The staff very friendly and the food is top notch 👍🤙

I had chips, baked beans and a cheese and onion cake. The chips were limp and very greasey. The beans had no liquid in and were stuck together and the Cheese and Onion cake was really greasey too! The paper it was wrapped in was soaked in it. Can't remember the last time we had chips from there and we were less than impressed! We won't bother again.

Another first for me. Have had fish and chips from here few years ago but first time stepping in. Got to tell you. The big fish and chips is really big compared to what you can get in Canada. Holy smokes and it tastes really good. Comes with the skin and that takes the taste to another level. If you don't like skin they maybe can give you without skin. Also had their donar kheba once again nothing compared to what you get in Canada. It was huge. The meat was tasty. Come with green and some sauce.. don't need to anything else. It good as it is. One can feed two for sure.

We had been going here for years Due to us moving further away and our local being closed on Sundays we have started to visit again on lazy Sunday's Always busy which is always a good sign and the fact that your order is always fresh Always friendly and service is spot on We would always recommend lovely chippy

Food may good but beware off overcharging the total price on your Bill as this is the second time it has happened to Me They look as if they are too busy so when customers are waiting in queue for their turn they get frustrated and don't check on what they are paying and consequently they get overcharged as they want to get their fish and chips or so and leave without checking The staff especially the owner and his wife look as if they are too busy and consequently they are going too fast on Till ie the cash till overcharging customers as customers get frustrated whilst waiting for their turn to buy fish and chips or so It may only be 20p or 50p or so but imagine if they do to 50% off thir customers every day

This is actually the best fish and chip shop in the country! Have been using this for over 40 years and the quality just keeps getting better. I drive over 5 miles just to have the best supper. I cannot recommend this highly enough. This is an example of haddock and chips at a cost of £8.20. More than enough for two people. When was the last time anyone had fish so good, with flakes the size of a 50p piece? The best!
