Guten Appetit in Wirral

Being a German living in the UK, I was quite excited to stumble upon this cafe in Birkenhead market as I hoped I might have found somewhere to go when I get the very rare craving for German junk food, namely Bratwurst. The menu looked promising with authentic sounding options and I ordered a Bratwurst in a roll while my fiancé went for the Currywurst, one of his all time German favourite. Both were extremely disappointing. The Bratwurst was served cut up in small pieces in a stereotypical English bap. While I know decent bread is hard to come by in the UK I feel a piece of baguette would not been too dissimilar from German type rolls and would have been more authentic. The bratwurst was disappointing, as well, admittedly it lacked the horrible aftertaste many typical English sausages have but, it was quite bland and greasy. I know Bratwurst is not meant to be healthy but when there's hardly any taste to detract from the greasiness it's hard to ignore. My fiancé's currywurst was no better. The sauce was bizarre, watery and sweet and seemed to have bits of some sort of vegetable in it, much more like a watered down sweet chilli sauce. In Germany, currywurst 'sauce' is essentially curry ketchup which is just what it sounds like; ketchup with added curry, maybe a tad more liquid than normal ketchup in the consistency but nothing like the watery sauce that we were presented with. There may be a German influence but it's not authentic by any means, it's clearly been heavily anglicised and not in a good way. I'll just have to continue to stick to Christmas markets for my Bratwurst fix....
