We ate at Guru on our annual curry outing and it was excellent. As someone who has lived in Edinburgh all my life I’m sad I’m only discovering this excellent restaurant now. We had a banquet style set menu for 20 of us and there was more than enough food to go around. The restaurant itself is dry however you are allowed to bring your own booze if you wish. I decided to try one of their excellent Lassie smoothies which was wonderful and lived up to all expectations I had of it. Staff were wonderful and very friendly and the food was plentiful and you certainly didn’t leave hungry! The curry’s were different too with some nice mild ones and also some different spicy ones. I only got one photo from the night but really it was an excellent night. I am looking forward to returning with my girlfriend at some point.

I have been to Guru before, maybe 5 or 6 times & it had been good. However, with a voucher from myideals, which had worked many times before, including at Guru, I booked a lunch for 4 people at 12.30 today. Despite the confirmation of booking, on arrival there was a “sorry we are closed” sign. Mega embarrassing & very disappointing. No reason for being closed was given & there was no answer to their phone. I called again at night & was passed to a waiter to hear my grievance but he could not explain. To make matters worse, there was no apology, just irrelevant waffle about opening times for breakfast & when asked again for an explanation, not only could he, or would he do so, he stated, he was busy but would call me back later, which I doubted. He also questioned if I had booked the correct restaurant! And, surprise, surprise, he did not call back. Another failed promise! I will not book again or return!

Decided to come here after getting a delicious takeaway a few weeks earlier and was really looking forward to it. However, disappointingly, our expectations were not met. As usual, we ordered poppadoms and the pickle tray while viewing the menu. We decided on pachos (Indian nachos) and dynamite prawns from the street food section of the menu as starters. While both were tasty, the portion size of the pachos was disappointing as was the fact that there was only a drizzle of cheese on top. The dips provided with them, however, did give them a lot more flavour. For mains my partner had chicken tikka with a South Indian garlic chilli sauce on the side, while I went for the chicken chasni. We had a cheese Nan, a garlic Nan and some pilau rice as accompaniments. The chicken tikka was delicious as was the sauce. Not normally one I like but this one had less lime and was not as bitter as I usually find it. One I would try again. While the chasni sauce was also fabulous the chicken was underwhelming as it appeared to come from a bag of frozen chicken cubes. This may be to keep costs down but does impact the quality of food delivered. Both nans were excellent. The service was excellent and atmosphere very good but not changing cutlery between courses is always a no no in my book. I really wanted this to be fabulous, and I don’t think it would take much to get there, but overall we left a bit deflated.

Mediocre. No veggie pakora on the starter menu. Chicken bhuna so-so in terms of taste and portion, although the cheese nan was huge and good value. BYOB system also kept down the overall price. Wednesday night and not busy so restaurant cold. Owner didn't help matters by allowing his children (or grandchildren?) to run around noisily as young kids tend to do when left to their own devices.

Tried Guru for the first time last night and will definitely return! It’s BYOB (£1 a can/bottle) which keeps the cost down and allows you to bring your faves. All the usual favourites plus a few individual specials. Great Poppadums/Pickles, decent Pakora and a spicy Chana Purée. CTM was a bit bland but the Chicken Jalfrezi was very tasty.

Ranks as best Indian food I have ever had. Attentive service, prompt service ( though it was quiet at the time) and a pershwari nan to die for (also incidentally the size of a dustbin lid, so over half came home in a doggy bag) . Only one Negative, the actual restaurant could do with a freshen up , but the food more than makes up for that. 10/10 for the washrooms.

Ok.. I was invited for a group dinner and it was my first time to go to this place. I'm dining at least 3 - 4 times a week in different restaurants. This place gives you the feeling of sitting in a takeaway curry house. The delivery drivers are rushing through the whole restaurant from kitchen to the main door between the tables. It creates an uncomfortable atmosphere and you will wish to eat and go asap. The food quality on scale of 1 - 10 when is 1 is very bad and 10 is excellent, it is 4 at all. We chose to eat food from here because of their claim to be the chief gurus of Baltis in Edinburgh. Well can I tell you these were mediocre curries to say the least. Yes they produce large ban breads but for food taste and authenticity that's about as good as it gets. To say that these curries were Baltis us so wrong. They were four different curries which it looks like were made from the same basic and rather thin gravy. A big disappointment I'm sorry to say.

This has to be my favorite Indian restaurant in Edinburgh. We hadn't been in a while but the waiter remembered us. The portions are very generous and the quality of the food never fails to impress. The naan on this occasion was perhaps a little smaller than usual but only just. I had the Lamb dopiaza and my husband had the pathia and both were excellent. I was a little to greedy and opted for the poppadom & pickle tray and a starter so i was fairly full when we got the main. No problem, they pack it up for you to take home! Visited here last night for my daughter's birthday - there were five adults in the party.I actually have a 'claim to fame' with this restaurant...I was their first ever customer! That was about 20 years ago and I have been back many times since, but with less frequency recently. On approaching the restaurant the first thing you can't fail to notice is the big sign in the window telling you that they have been BYOB since August 2015. What I didn't realise was that meant they didn't have a licence at all. So my bottom was on a seat for less than 3 minutes when I had to hot-foot it round the corner to the nearest off-license for some beer (yes, I went for Cobra)! The starters were nice, but both my wife and I have had better chicken pakora and lamb sheik kebab respectively.Nan bread was amazing in both taste and size. Unless you are a party of 6 and above, do not order anymore than one bread. Now for the mains...not good! I make my own curries 2-3 times a week, so not only do I compare dishes to other restaurants, but also what I make with my own fair hand. To be honest, not many compare to my homemade fayre, but these didn't even get close to other Indian establishments on the west side of Edinburgh - see my reviews on Jashans and St. John's Curry Club. Bland is one word that springs to mind. My brother's dish actually tasted like a Chinese chicken curry...bizarre!Staff are nice and the service was great, but it can be quite chilly during winter as the restaurant is small and the front door opens right into the seating area. Will probably go back one day for old times sake, but it won't be for a while.

I wasn't in the mood for something too spicy on this occasion, so opted for the passanda. It was lovely and flavourful. Sometimes places substitute spice for flavour and the mild curries are a let down, but not here. The giant naan have to been seen to be believed.

Excuse me waiter I thought I ordered the large naan? It's the same old jokes at the Guru, but they never get old.I've been going here on and off for years. The curry has always been good. It's not the best curry in town, but it is a decent standard. The portion sizes are large so if you're not a big eater then consider skipping the starters. Personally I enjoy their starters (the puri and mince samosas are ace) so I order a starter and main and take any leftovers home a doggy bag.One of us ordered the Vindaloo, which was tasty but very hot. He considers himself to be a bit of a tough guy and is always asking for extra chillies. Well he met his match with the Vindaloo. So much so that he was more than willing to share it with the rest of us. The sweat was pouring off him with every mouthful he did manage to swallow. The rest of the curry was just pushed about on his plate until one of the friendly waiters saved him from his torture and took his plate away. How we laughed. The BIG selling point of the Guru is the naan bread. It is truly magnificent. Our group always refer to the Guru naans as parachutes. They are genuinely massive and absolutely delicious too. I've had many curries in London and I've very rarely had a naan bread bigger than the size of a side plate. Well the Guru naans most certainly do not disappoint. As long as I've known the place it has been BYOB. It was never advertised that way and always used to have Kingfisher on draft. However the restaurant no longer has a liquor license so if you want some alcohol then you'll need to bring some with you. Luckily there are some corner shops about 100 yards away if you forget. This local knowledge can be useful if one of your stingy pal turns up without beers expecting to get tucked into everybody else's. You can politely tell him to beat it and get along to the shop. The corkage is fixed at £1 per head. So if you are like me and enjoy 20 beers with your curry then you can take comfort that you will only pay a quid for the privilege. You really can't argue with 5p per bottle can you?To place looks quite small, but is a bit of a Tardis. I would guess that it seats up to 50. I've been there with a large group and also my better half and it never disappoints.I highly recommend the Guru. Only then will you understand what I say about the naan bread.

I was there a few days ago, staffs did not know any thing about the menu at all. Nobody could help me or at least offer an acceptable service and I had to wait for more than one and half hour there for food

On top of lack of hygiene, food is expensive and very bland. Went because I had groupon voucher but would never return again. This place is bad even by low standards of Edinburgh so-called Indian food and is really to be shunned!

Do not buy a Groupon deal from this restaurant it is very difficult to redeem and when I asked for help from the restaurant to redeem the manager was extremely rude and made me feel like I was a getting in his way. The food was very disappointing as well very tasteless. Safe to say I will not be back Groupon or not, this experience was on Friday 11th September 2015.

I ordered a family meal which consisted of 3 Curries, one nan and 3 rice for a home delivery. Two of the curries tasted the same, no flavour, vegetables or spice, and the other was filled with salt! The chicken was of poor quality and hadn't been anywhere near a tandoori oven. The rice was gloopy and had a green tint to it???Yes, the nan was large but very doughy! Over all, the food was uneatable and very over priced so I decided to contact the restaurant to complain. I spoke with the manager who was very efficient, pleasant and was pleased that I had called as he believed negative feedback helped them to improve their business. He then offered me a full refund which I accepted. As the restaurant has been successful for many years I'd like to think this was just an "off night" and that they continue to receive positive feedback for the good food they seem to make.

Used groupon voucher to purchase takeaway from guru tonight. The food was awful the chicken pakora was obviously last nights leftovers reheated so yellowed and chewy not fit to eat would have broken my teeth. The curries where very bland altho i asked for extra spicy and a distinct lack of chicken.Thw manager had a terrjble attitude and made a comment about us not ordering rice surely thats our choice. They would never have dared serve that food up to customers in the restaurant.I question whether it was because we were groupon customers that the food was so poor or is this what they now serve in the guru to all their customersThe guru used to be one of our favourite restaurants in edinburgh and we spent many a night there so it was even more dissapointing. We certainly will not be returning and would not reccomend it.

Great place, amazing food and the biggest naan breads you will ever see. Always fresh, tasty and with good service too. Easy location for me which has encouraged way too many takeaways as well as the odd sit in (restaurant is nice inside and is constantly getting redecorated or freshened up).

Now live overseas but visit the Guru every time I return to the city. Ignore the dodgy 2 reviews here, there has been consistency for a number of years of good indian food, huge naans and decent prices. Situated in the west of the city. We were 2 people and couldn't finish the naan, crazy big. Recommended.

This is just a horrible place to eat at. The food is of really poor quality and the customer service is appalling. First they got our order wrong then instead of apologising, they simply showed rude attitude then gave us the food that was cold and tasteless. Do not go there you'll be wasting your time and money

Very disappointing, the place is so dirty and disgusting, the staff are rude and always on their mobile phones. The curries were cold tasteless and probably left overs from the night before. Complete waste of money. 0.5/10

Great selection of food, fantastic service and friendly staff that remember you. Only warning are the huge naans you only need one between 3 people :-) It's our favourite stop before heading to rugby

Went to this restaurant on a quiet Tuesday night with a friend. We had 4 Poppadoms with various sauces to start with while we looked over the menu. They were freshly made and delicious. We both had starters along with main course and both had our own rice dishes. 1 Naan bread to share and it cost us £45.00. This restaurant is BYOB friendly. Good for us as we brought 2 bottles. Top Tip. Only order 1 Naan bread. Its about half the size of the table. A great marketing tool. Everyone talks about it. The service was quick and friendly. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys an Indian meal. It is on the pricier side but well worth it.

We randomly selected this restaurant as we were in Slough for a couple of days and looking for somewhere - we are delighted we did. As a family (kids 10 and 4) it can be difficult on a wet Wednesday night after driving 7hrs+ to get something everyone is happy with, but the staff were brilliant and organized our meal so there was something for everyone. They were also great with the kids and even though the restaurant wasn't busy I still felt they were attentive and ready to help for whatever we needed. The food was fabulous too. We each had a different meal and were struggling to decide which was best, my advice is to speak to the staff and let them know what you do and dont like and they can prepare it the way you want it. Nothing was too much trouble. All in all a lovely place and if we are ever in the area we will definitely be back!

Wow this was the best Indian food I have eaten, the service was excellent and the food was delivered to us quickly. The food was so tasty with just enough quantity. I can’t recommend the restaurant enough, I can’t wait to come back!!
